Product Description
THORGEN's story started in Laon in March 1998, through ADX guitarist: he introduced Cyrille BAILLY (Guitar) to Marc DAZIN (Guitar) of the band KEOPS (Formerly KARCASS). The two musicians decided then to start a new musical adventure with Bernard LEGRAND (Bass), also a transfer from KEOPS. THORGEN was born from this fusion. Its track-list shows multiple influences: ADX, KILLERS, DREAM THEATER, Michael SCHENKER, PANTERA, METALLICA, JUDAS PRIEST... Answering the public's demands, THORGEN decided to record its first album "Heretic" in 2002, with its own means. This allowed the band to become more famous and to sign a distribution contract with the Brennus label. Here is then a masterpiece of melodic heavy-metal that you should, under no circumstances, miss !

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2007-04-22

These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.

Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.

The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.

Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".

A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.

The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07

Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.

Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.

City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Under "Levels" of Filler There Is An Album Here........2007-04-07

The metal hiarchy known as Morbid Angel have a high standard to live up to. Morbid fans are a passionate bunch with no tolerate for "under the mill" albums and the band is aware of that. I myself expect to embark on a tremendous dark journey when a new Morbid album is released. However, referring to the album HERETIC, which starts out fairly strong, falls into one of the most absolutely ridiculous track layouts I have personally EVER encountered actually making it the most muddled down and anti-climatic album in death metal history.

At first run, I immediately noticed the intentional less-than-stellar mastering which fits well in preserving their unique "old school" sound and is not a distraction at all. The distraction is that out of the 14 tracks LISTED on the album only 8 are performed by the band entirely- the rest being filler tracks with only "Abyssous" to hold enough worth to grab my attention (The unlisted "tracks" are fodder not worthy of mention). No disrespect to the bands musicianship but what the Hell were they thinking with the album layout? I felt like a victim at a local carnival. You know, where the toothless guy shows you all kinds of cool prizes (Awesome song titles in this case) and proclaims you look like a "winner" but you soon find out they're only an illusion and you would have to win for hours to have a chance to get them. I don't want to have to play for hours to win my prize just as much as I don't want to have to sift through a bunch of garbage that the band led me to believe on the back panel were album worthy songs. They're not. Even "Drum Check" should not have been an actual album track. I won't deny that it is an entertaining track but as cool as it is should not have been listed in the actual tracks-as it is more suitable for a ghost track, the only one suitable for this actually. As a matter of fact this 70 minute CD contains about half that in good material with the rest being soaked up with the immense amount of silly ghost tracks.

So why three stars after all the slamming? Because underneath the plethora of filler there is an absolute monolith of an album presented here. On the actual song tracks Morbid Angel do not waiver. The songs range from diabolical blasting to spidery mid tempos filled with utter creepiness. Also, contrary to many reviews that the songs are tedious, I personally found them to be very inspired and eventful and aside from a few song similarities they all deliver. The members abilities are also unquestionable. Pete Sandoval, though he sounds a bit programmed from time to time presents jaw dropping blasts and double bass beats that continue to destroy. Azagtoth's guitar work is very well thought and even darker and more bizarre than past releases and Tucker has reached his vocal peak on this album.

So the bottom line is that this could 've been a great 10 track disk, given the use of a few tracks as long as the continuity is not broken. The fatal flaw that is causing many fans to overlook it's greatness is the filler. It just distracts the listener and pulls them away from the atmosphere that is created. I believe this to be an absolutely unacceptable flaw, especially from veterans of a scene whom should know better.

2 out of 5 stars Their worst album.......2007-02-10

Unfortunately, Morbid Angel made a mediocre album with Heretic. Their previous one also wasn't particularly amazing. This is by far Morbid Angel's worst album. I definitely don't recommend this for anyone, except perhaps rabid Morbid Angel fans. I gave it two stars because a few bits here and there are good.

1 out of 5 stars Death Metal Gods flop big time with this loser!.......2006-10-24

I've given this MA disc several good listenings to and it just plain sucks. I really hate to say this too. As a guitar player myself, I have nothing but respect for Trey and Pete. THey are truly gifted musicians. However, this album is just plain boring. There are NO catchy or interesting riffs, the production quality sucks and the vocals are NOT up to the standards of Dave Vincent. Unless you're a die hard MA that will listen to anything thay put out, no matter how crappy it is, then save your money. The latest Cannibal Corpse album Kill is a WAY better album and represents where Death Metal is TODAY in terms of catchy, brutal riffs and blistering leads. Pat's guitar work in the new Canniabal, and The Wretched Spawn, blows this away on every front.

3 out of 5 stars Not their greatest, but not bad either 3.5 stars.......2006-10-07

Lots of negative reviews here. I found Heretic to be a step up from Gateways to Annihilation, which I found to be quite boring and somewhat overproduced. Heretic reminds me of a mix of Formulas Fatal To The Flesh and their old sound, say from Domination (another overproduced album). Lots of people have complained about the production of the album, but I find it to be just fine.

There are some pretty good songs on this album: Enshrined by Grace is an immediate standout, Praise the Strength, Curse The Flesh, & Striken Arise (thats not Steve Tucker singing is it ?). Unfortunately, there is a whole bunch of filler that takes away from the overall feel of the album. There really are only 8 songs, but the CD has 14 tracks, plus meaningless bonus tracks. The only bonus tracks that are interesting are the Drum Check, and Abyssous.

4 out of 5 stars Way better than Gateways!.......2006-06-04

I don't see why everyone critisizes this album, because it's got some groove?, every song has a groove, wether it's fast or slow, and this album has great speed moments also.

The production is really different, I can't really explain it, but just listen to it, and you'll see what I mean, but it's clean production, sounds good.

Cleansed in Pestilence 5/5, strong opener, cool riffs, and a cool solo.

Enshrined by Grace 5/5, One of the best on the album, catchy riffs, has nice parts where it speeds up also, killer solo.

Beneath the Hollow, 5/4, A bit slower than the previous 2, but it's good, nice riffs, adds variety also.

Curse the Flesh, 5/5, More mid-paced, great riffs and tempo changes also.

Praise the Strength 5/4, Slowed down a bit again, but it's catchy, it flows nicely.

Stricken Arise 5/5, Another one of the best ones on the album, nice speed, great vocals by Steve, he does great on the whole album.

Place of Many Deaths 5/0, Sorry, not an intrumental fan.

Abyssous 5/0, Read above.

God of Our Own Divinity 5/5, There we go!, back to the Metal, very nice riffs, mostly mid-paced, excellent riffing.

Within Thy Enemy..... 5/5, More great Metal, this one is fast, killer.

Memories of the Past 5/0, Read above.

Drum Check 5/5, Haha, pete slamming the drums, and wow, what a drummer, some of the best I've ever heard.

Born Again 5/0, Read above.

Well there you have it, I like this album, got it the day it came out, and still love it today.

If you can find the 2 disc edition, get it, it's got some demos on the 2nd disc, no vocals on them, but cool to hear, later.

Mike Howe was an incredible vocalist, sure is one of the best back in the day. Heretic was not too popular, but their music is aggresive, with great solos and fast drumming with some double bass. In my opinion, this is their best album, better than "Torture knows no boundary".

5 out of 5 stars Finally available..........2002-04-30

Finally available! While the movie was laughed at due to it's mishmash script and un-convincing acting. The only memorable element that came out from the whole thing was the soundtrack. "Pazuzu (Theme From The Exorciste II)" & "Interrupted Melody" still sound haunting today. This is one of Ennio Morricone best works, and I'm glad that it's been re-released and remastered.
Give it a shot!

4 out of 5 stars One of the finest of Morricone's "Lost " Scores..........2001-06-10

Though John Boorman's original vision for the sequel may be lost forever, leaving us with the mess today that goes by the title of EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC, the best thing to come out of the whole experience was one of the most haunting themes composed by Morricone, the last of the old-style film scoring masters. The score is actually much better than the film it was written for, and even helps redeem the film in some ways. (The hilariously over-the-top disco version of "Pazuzu's Theme" is forgiveable, considering how bad the film itself is.) For the beauty of the Main Title and "Suspended Melody," though, the purchase of this soundtrack is definitely worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Difficult, but brilliant album-- carves its own style........2005-03-25

Naked City was a compositional worshop for John Zorn-- while the band is known for its genre blending jump cut styles and hardcore miniatures, there are a number of other faces to this group, and "Heretic" displays them. "Heretic" exists in sort of an electric improv form that is unique to it-- there's not an attempt at bringing in other genres, no blending swing with hardcore and so on. As a result, it works better in terms of being a coherent statement than much of the other Naked City material.

One other difference is that the music here lacks the sort of density and business of "Naked City" and "Grand Guignol". This is further accentuated by all of the musicians not appearing on every track, instead we get a number of different views of the band. Like most Zorn material, there's not a lot here that's not terribly interesting, and there is a lot of note-- the churning, building, atonal "Sex Games" and "Saint Jude", zorn/Eye duets ("Sweat, Sperm + Blood", "Here Come the 7,000 Frogs", and "Mantra of Resurrected Sh*t") that reallys show off how brilliantly these two work together, a Frisell/Frith duet that illustrates the strength of the two of them on their instruments ("Vliet"), and speaking of Frisell, his guitar playing really gets shown off on "Submission" with a fractured and disjoint lead. And then there's "Dominatrix 2B", which actually has that jump-cut feel, although moving through the sort of environments and attitudes set up on this album rather than other genres. Also of note are the "Heretic" pieces, on which much of saxaphone technique and vocabulary he developed that are so unique to him are shown off over shifting backgrounds. But perhaps most stunning is "Back Through the Looking Glass", I've been trying to determine how to describe it, but it really needs to be heard to be appreciated.

In its own way, "Heretic" is brilliant-- its a challenging listen, and if you're not firmly entrenched with Zorn's way, its probably going to be difficult to digest, but like many of his works, this one rewards repeated listenings and patience.

3 out of 5 stars ThrashJazz Improvs.......2001-11-14

I really took a liking to naked city when I first heard the self titled release and grand guignol. Mainly because of how it sounded like such an extreme force of organized chaos. What we have here is the same kind of chaos but with little or no organization. Alot of this album just sounds as if each musician is off in his own world improvising and having no care as to what the other musicians are up to. There is a pretty neat highlight where the vocals and the sax have a improv duel but it wasn't quite worth the import price except for the fact that I may as well collect them all at this point.

I would consider avoiding this one until you've bought the self titled album and Grand Guignol. If you were impressed by that like I certainly was. Consider whether you can handle that in improv form. If so then you may have found your gem.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite Torture Garden..........2001-11-04

"Heretic" is definitely a good record. It's represents a big change for Naked City, though, and if you're looking for another "Torture Garden" or even "Naked City" or "Radio", you won't find it here. This is more experimental, (at times) ambient, and definitely less structured and edgy than the previous Naked City releases. It seems to be a lot of lick-based noise where you have drums, keyboards, other percussion coming in and out, keyboards, other percussion, nothing planned out or even, shall we say, MUSICAL. Not to say it's a bad record, though, because it's definitely worth having, but don't go buying it hoping to get another "Torture Garden" fix, you'll only be disapointed in that case. There are absolutely no elements of grindcore, surf, or much of anything that made up Naked City's original mission, but do give it a chance, it will grow on you if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, this is a GREAT Zorn release.......2000-10-21

The person who reads this should be, really, a Zorn fan lost in the maze of his output, scared to invest in a Zorn CD like JUDE that just tortures the listener, or something TRULY strange like ABSINTHE, which is beautiful but really difficult to hook onto. Rest assured -- THIS IS A GOOD ONE. It's the one I'd recommend for anyone considering buying one of the Japanese Zorn releases -- RADIO, somehow, never really appealed to me, GRAND GUIGNOL is a bit too DARK for most folk, and ABSINTHE, like I say, is just STRANGE. Not this disk. It's very varied, at times dark, intense, and violent, and elsewhere playful in bizarre and challenging ways. The "Here Come the 7000 frogs" duet between Zorn on alto and Boredoms weirdo vocalist Y. Eye, gibbering, shrieking, and generally flipping out, is priceless. There's also a surprisingly funky cut here, "Fire and Ice (club scene)." Well worth it. But "Is it safe?", you ask me again, reaching for the dental drill. Yeah, sure, if you're adventurous enough. Heh.

A crucial part of Manhattan's "illbient" scene, Raz Mesinai--a.k.a. Badawi the Bedouin--is known as one half of the duo Sub Dub, whose dark soundscapes, heavy beats, and turntable moves echo kindred souls and Asphodel label mates such as Byzar, We, and DJ Spooky. But the Israel-bred, New York-blossomed DJ responsible for 1997's incendiary dub-hop hybrid Bedouin Sound Clash has chops on more than just the wheels of steel. Adept at Middle Eastern hand drums such as the bendir, zarb, dumbek, and darbouka, he's a top-shelf percussionist who puts dub and beat science aside to focus on more traditional Arabic and Sufi sounds on The Heretic of Ether. A musical and metaphysical travelogue of a fictional gypsy whom Mesinai calls "Gaska Gavor," Ether is a sample-free collage of live cello, violin, percussion, keyboards, and voice, developed through long, often austere improvisations arranged into three suites, or "chapters," from the trancelike "Tired Soldiers" to the driving "Fatal Confrontation." Middle Eastern music only an illbient instigator could create. --James Rotondi

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars excruciatingly exquisite.......2004-04-11

as often as not, just thinking of this record gives me waves of goosebumps. incredibly moving, timeless, well beyond mere sentiment...you know right away you're in the presence of something far from the familiar or expected. this record deserves to be heard by many people for a long time. As a DJ, I have what I call my "fish in a barrel" tracks, pieces that I know are going to invariably sweep across the room like a rapture, and near the top of the list is this record. I can't recommend it highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars buy it for the drums.......2002-03-17

I generally like what asphodel puts out, generally. I usually get tired of the albums fairly quickly as they are usually just complex sampling affairs with some pretty simple musical compositions underneath. This album is not that different in that most of the tracks kind of meander around, instead of bleeping and farting there are now lush strings and eastern drums. This album is more about sonority then bleeps and farts and is more like the drone stuff on asphodel I think, it's been awhile. In any event the percussion on this album kicks.... You'll dig it.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't Close Your Eyes.......2002-02-23

Mixing Western and Middle Eastern instrumentation and sensibilities, Badawi finds a dark intersection and explores every inch. There's a definite sense of evil, or at least danger, creeping through the notes; the underlying drones are as unsettling as the banjo boy from Deliverance. The percussion tends toward melody but never quite escapes its rhythms.

The album plays on several themes: struggle, defeat, and enlightenment. The listener observes a heroic journey, and is rewarded for deep listening.

5 out of 5 stars A trip into the middle east.......2001-02-12

WOW,this is one hell of an album!if you are looking for asphodel label mates trickery,go elsewhere please-this is pure spirit... Basically a one man album, with asstiance from 2 string players, Raz mesinai plays all percussion(middle eastren stuff like darabuka and frame drums) and keyboards. The music itself is quiet minimal, and builds up from the begining of the cd till end. the are some very rhytmic cuts, but the over vibe is quite chilled out and relaxing( for me at least....).Hell - i go to sleep hearing this cd! my only Question is- who da hell is Raz mesinai? the cd has lots of hebrew and israeli names-what's da catch?

As a timekeeper, drummer Kevin O'Donnell's done a fine job for one-time Squirrel Nut Zippers member Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire. Taking the Bird-Bowl lineup that decked the ears with Oh! The Grandeur and augmenting it with trombonist David Dieckmann and saxophonist Chris Greene on the front line, O'Donnell's put together a great swinging ensemble with his Quality Six. Heretic Blues shows the band's ace-in-the-hole languidity on numbers like the warhorse "Moten Swing" as well as nine of the drummer's compositions. Bird's vocals mark most tracks with a slurry calm, an easy sashay that places O'Donnell and company in line with a Kansas City swing tradition. It would be too easy to trace this offshoot of the neo-swing movement back to Squirrel Nut Zippers, especially since O'Donnell, Bird, and their collaborators have a different, more jazzy sense of the music. It's a good thing, too. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling, Snarky Fun!.......2006-07-28

I found my way to Kevin O'Donnell's cds through my love of Andrew Bird's music. Now Kevin O'Donnell's Quality Six shares pride of place at the very top of my playlist.

Each track is tightly woven and masterfully played. Lyrics are often delivered with wit and always executed with flair. O'Donnell's drums shimmer and Bird's violin just plain sings.

What's more, this music is flat-out fun. "Control Freak" and "Heretic Blues" got me through the grueling ordeal of studying for the NY Bar Exam. And if I actually pass, I will find him and I will buy him a drink.

5 out of 5 stars Blow, Daddy, blow!.......2005-12-31

Jazzy, hip, beat- filled. Six makes you want to start dancing, even if you don't dance! Doobie doo dah dum... I'm listening to "Girl From New York City" right now, and it makes me feel like taking the next Acela up to Penn Station and hail a cab to Broadway!

The music is a throwback to big- band era in a way, but very modern in its approach. It's jazzy rock without the heavy feeling. Seems like there's a solo violin, drum, a light row of brass, guitar, that cool bass, and nice vocals.

So, dust off that zoot suit, polish those shoes, dab on the expensive cologne, call the babysitter, and yank out your credit card, because you'll paint the town red while listening to these toe- tappin' tunes, baby!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Refreshing!.......2000-03-01

This is a terrific collection of songs, Both slow and sad, and fast and up beat! Its has some Blues numbers and Lots of good Jazz numbers! Its about half and half, some songs are song to, and some are just pure instrumental Jazz! Andrew Bird sings most the songs and Colin Bunn ( the Guitarist ) sings one that he wrote and David dieckmann ( trombone ) sings two songs, one that he wrote. No one shows off at all though, they all come together to form a very refreshing arrangment of music! Kevin's lyrics are very suprising I was amazed at his poetic ability, and I cant wait till a new release by these guys!

Oh, yeah, Kevin's Druming is a real treat to the ears!

If you like Andrew Bird or if you like what you hear here, I strongly suggest "Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire"!
