Plucked from a wet afternoon of busking Bizet and Puccini to passersby on the Piazza in Covent Garden in the spring of 2001, soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo Karen England soon found themselves singing in slightly larger venues: the FA Cup and Champions League soccer finals. That the management company doing the plucking had recently performed a similar Cinderella crossover act for Russell Watson offered portent, and indeed the Babes--the moniker began as a joke--were soon on their way to this recording debut. The marketing shtick and its soccer connections may offend purists, but it's the football hooligans that the Babes are trying to win over here; can Borodin soothe the savage Manchester United fan? Their classically trained voices mesh gloriously, with England's warm mezzo showing particular character in her solo turns.

The repertoire choices here cover material that may already be familiar to fans of Charlotte Church (i.e., Delibes "Flower Duet") and other crossover acts, but they do include some pleasant surprises, like Offenbach's Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann and "You Live On in My Heart," a reworking of Ennio Morricone's enchanting Cinema Paradiso theme with lyrics by Knight. But in a rush toward the musical middle of the road, it's the productions themselves that sometimes overwhelm the Babes with bathos ("Ave Maria"), hollow thunder ("Aida 2002"), and electro club kitsch (the 'Vibe Tribe' mix of "Flower Duet"). Former Art of Noise mainstay Anne Dudley's tastefully restrained coloring of Tchaikovsky's "1001 Nights" is one of the notable exceptions. They're babes, they sing opera--with fair promise--for the masses, and if they turn one in a hundred from football hooliganism to a well-mannered appreciation of Grieg and Dvorák, won't it all have been worth it? --Jerry McCulley

overorchestrated, overproduced aural wallpaper...that said, still, these women have wonderful voices and are worth hearing. They are oversold,too...Opera Babes! Indeed. Folks who like Enya will like this.

5 out of 5 stars simply beautiful, so just enjoy it.......2007-06-11

my daughter has taught me to love opera. this immediately captured me. the Babes' voices blend so beautifully. I love it! who cares about Puccini, Classic Opera, blah, blah, woof, woof. I love this album

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy renditions and amateurish.......2007-05-15

I heard one of the selections on Sirius and liked it so I bought the CD. Upon hearing the entire CD I was disappointed that the only selection I liked was the one that prompted me to buy the product. The voices are nice but they are simply adding voice to opera masterpieces that do not fit. They are certainly not of the caliber of Sarah Brightman or Charlotte Church and don't look for that. Their sound is mellow, dim and without the emotion that does an inservice to the opera pieces they sing. I found the CD lackluster and in all honestly very "amateurish".

5 out of 5 stars Great songs reinvented, with a twist.......2006-09-30

Expanding upon the recent interest in Gregorian chant fusion as well as rich-voiced solo vocalists such as Josh Groban, operatic soprano Rebecca Knight and mezzo soprano Karen England offer full-vibratoed, somewhat modernized interpretations of favorite classical themes. Backed by chorus, orchestras, keyboards and drums, they draw from such diversely satisfying works as Puccini's opera "Madame Butterfly," Grieg's "Piano Concerto in a minor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony," Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Delibe's "Lakme," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffman," Schubert's "Ave Maria," and Verdi's "Aida." Some of the arrangements are fairly traditional, while others are noticeably enhanced. The emphasis tends to be on pretty pieces with sweet melodies, though a few are more intense in nature (#1, 4, 5, 15 and 17). A couple of pop songs, still sung in operatic style, are thrown in for good measure, although they don't have the same appeal and mystique as the old favorites. All of the selections feature both vocalists together, singing in lovely, close harmony. The arrangers of this elegantly hip music include Jon Cohen, Noely, Frank Gallagher, Deni Lew and Anne Dudley, with multi-language lyrics (for the adaptations of instrumental works) by Rebecca Knight and others. I have to admit that I occasionally found myself longing for the modern additions to be more consistently interesting and distinctive--in other words, equaling the artistry of the classics that they're accompanying. Track #1, which really shines, is a well-done example. Alternately, perhaps the source songs might have been better off left in their pure, original styles rather than watered down with schmaltzy, predictable underpinnings that don't add much to the music. But like Enigma did for medieval chant, the Opera Babes are endeavoring to bring some wonderful, time-tested music to a wider audience, fusing it with modern idioms in way that is artistic and generally appealing. For more opera fusion, compare the work of Amici Forever (a group of five singers, both male and female), and the oddly packaged but similar-in-concept album "Coco de Mer" by Adam Plack.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Beyond Imagination.......2006-02-26

What I really enjoyed about this album was its distinctive sound and arrangement of the material. I enjoy classically performed opera and was surprised how much I like the Opera Babes' versions. Of course, the wonderful voices added immensely to the high quality of this product.

Like a prog-rock Pentangle, Renaissance served up a pleasing melange of classical, Celtic, pop, and rock influences that reached its peak during the mid-'70s recordings anthologized here. Live renditions of "Can You Understand" and "Carpet of the Sun" prove the band was as technically proficient (and long-winded!) on stage as they were in the studio. Annie Haslam's sweetly operatic vocals are complemented by orchestral-strength rock arrangements, including that obligatory Rickenbacker bass sound. With the inclusion of "Running Hard" and "Mother Russia," this collection features most of the band's best-known songs, although "Ashes Are Burning" is conspicuously absent. (Had to save something for volume two.) --Billy Grenier

5 out of 5 stars Strictly for Progressive Rock aficionados.......2005-10-08

If one's musical inclination lies in the fusion of folk, rock and classical music, then "Tales of 1001 Nights -- Vols. I & II" by Renaissance should resonate comfortably with you.

Similar in musicality to Mannheim Steam Roller, but interwoven with thoughtful lyrics from Cornish poetess Betty Thatcher, many of the masterpieces which brought international acclaim to this seventies 'art rock' group are faithfully represented here, both in their Carnegie Hall and studio recordings between 1971 and 1979.

While the inclusion of "Rajah Khan", "The Flood at Lyons" and "Sisters" would have been nice additions to either of these albums (or perhaps another album a la "Tales of 1001 Nights -- Vol. 3"), it is nonetheless an absolute delight to hear many of Michael Dunford's skillfully crafted compositions, Annie Haslam's soaring vocals, Terry Sullivan's classical interpretations on keyboard, Jon Camp's lead bass and John Tout's percussion preserved on two CDs for future generations.

Though critics often label Renaissance a 'pretentious' progressive rock band, one should consider their musical repertoire in the context of instruments available and musical styles other bands had covered up to this time, in which case one will then realise the innovation and intelligence of these meistersingers.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COMPILATION OF RENAISSANCE!.......2005-05-26

This CD is well worth owning - especially if you can only have ONE Renaissance CD in a "limited collection". Although a CD it should whet your appetite for more Renaissance - perhaps in other formats. The song "I Think of You" which in some ways sounds like it belongs in a romantic film is, to put it mildly, simply captivating. Annie Haslam's sexy and dream-like vocals carries you to the past and back again. Carpet of the Sun demostrates that the band did actually come across quite well LIVE and did not rely on studio "gimmicks" to project imagery, fantasy, and imagination. I prefer this CD to the "VOL II" version which contains mostly later songs.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent 70s Prog Rock!.......2003-04-05

The liner notes to this compilation say it all - there are two kind of people: those who've never heard of Renaissance and those that have and LOVE THEM.

For those who are new to Renaissance, this collection of their songs is a great place to start; this and "volume two." Think of Yes with an opera-trained female singer and you're kinda close to the Renaissance sound: progressive time and tempo changes, ambitious lyrical themes, the use of orchestral instruments, and the Rickenbacker electric bass! Jon Camp plays his Rickenbacker in the same manner as Chris Squire (Yes), approaching the bass guitar as though it were a melody instrument.

This first volume of their two-volume "best of" CDs begins with an "instrumental" that appeared on their first album, although this disc uses a live version. It's MOSTLY instrumental - a reworking of themes used in Russian classical music - though it also contains a vocalise from the angel-voiced Annie Haslam.

The CD continues with two more songs from the band's live Carnegie Hall album, including one of my favorite Renaissance songs, "Carpet of the Sun." (I'd have prefered the studio version of the song, from the "Ashes are Burning" album.) If you've only heard ONE Renaissance song in your life, it was probably this beautiful acoustic song; it was the closest the band ever came to a "hit."

More classic Renaissance songs follow, and one begins to hear the similarities between this band and that other 70s Progressive Rock band from England, Yes. But as wonderful as Jon Anderson's voice was (and still is, all these years later), Renaissance has the added advantage of vocalist Annie Haslam, who was trained by a world-reknowned opera singer and reportedly has an 8-octave range! Some may find this "opera" style of singing a little too much to bear, but it's the voice of the band and the reason so many fans love them!

If you like Yes and other Progressive Rock bands, check out this CD.

4 out of 5 stars "Novella" is not represented;but also Ashes are burning ..........2003-03-25

Well the album "Novella" is not represented here, but also "Ashes are burning" is almost completely absent (except on the tracks "Carpet of the sun" and "Can you understand"). Usually I don't like such collections, even though I must admit that instead both "Turn of the cards" and "Scheherazade" are well included within; and moreover the ouput is quite excellent for a novice, such a good representation of their remarkable career.Otherwise I can't feel to recommend this anthology- as a perfect place to start-to every one who wants to know the best Renaissance stuff;in fact despite of containing some of the best pieces of music art, regarding their most famous and probably best albums, you don't find here some other jewels (I think also of the splendid title track within the album "A song for all season's, which is probably their best symphonic prog mini-suite, or "Can you hear me" from "Novella" -another must-have- which unfortunately have not been included here.)

Remarkable, even though not completely essential, collection by Renaissance...

5 out of 5 stars your going to love this !.......2003-01-03

What a treat this CD turned out to be infact after playing it just once I ordered VOL 2. First of all the sound quality is remarkable considering this material comes largely from the early 70`s. This is a band thats not frightened to challenge conventional progressive boundaries, not only that they get big results . For me Renaissance are like a more restraint version of all the older progressive bands, they include odd timing meters and loads of classical orientation. Perhaps the big plus to Renaissance apart from there fantastic musical composisions is Annie Haslam, WOW what a great voice she has (beautiful) yet also dynamic, and the keyboard work of John Tout will surely not go unoticed on this CD. To sum it up it runs for over 70 minutes and in all of that time I cant say there is a bad song on it. When they compiled this CD they must have really thought long and hard about it because I have listened to many progressive bands and rarely before have i heard such beauty.
I guess for me this was a perfect selection (being new to Renaissance) I plan to get every one of there CD`s but this was a great place to start . I hope you like Renaissance as much as I do, if you like prog with classical influences your going to love this !

3 out of 5 stars good band that took the prog thing way too far.......2006-09-16

This band was very talented and adventerous but forgot a very important factor with popular music...the patrons are mostly kids and young people. Renaissance went way too far and essentially became classical artists. Classical is nice, I respect it but it lacks the energy and soul of rock and roll. Steeleye Span explored music of yesterday but maintained a rock edge. ELP and Yes veered into classical but also kept one foot in popular music. While i respect and admire that no one did what Renaissance did, the music did get a bit ponderous.

My favorite song on this is "Northern Lights". It is short, very melodic and has a hooky chorus yet it still features Annie Haslam's charming vocals.

If the group would have shortened up the songs a tad more, perhaps they would have had a larged audience.

5 out of 5 stars Strictly for Progressive Rock aficionados.......2006-05-08

4 out of 5 stars Straying ever so slightly from their classical roots.......2005-08-14

More than any other band in the progressive/classical movement of the 1970's, Renaissance stayed close to the symphonic stylings of the Romantic composers of the late 19th/early 20th century. They never relied on a "super-jock" instrumental soloist(i.e.Keith Emerson, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman)and seldom strayed far from acoustic instrumentation.

The songs on "Tales of 1001 Nights, Vol. 2" are culled from later studio recordings in this band's regrettably short career. The offerings from the album "Novella" showcase the band's jazzier side, including a nice trumpet solo. The "Song for All Seasons" album is well represented, and Annie Haslam's striking vocals are showcased on the melodically-pleasing "Northern Lights". "Azure d'Or" was much maligned by even the most devoted fan of Renaissance, but "Winter Tree" is a pleasant pop song, reminiscent of 80's synth pop.

Finally, there is a 24 minute live version of the elegiac "Ashes are Burning", which builds from Annie's vocals into a tasteful piano solo by John Tout. Jon Camp, one of the most underrated bassists of the period, uses his bass effectively as lead instrument, soloing to a dramatic build that breaks with Mike Dunford's chiming harmonics on the acoustic guitar, bridging into the return of the whole band and the orchestra, and Haslam's final vocal run. It is truly a sublime piece of music.

Renaissance was an incredibly talented ensemble and featured one of the loveliest voices in rock music. I still enjoy listening and find their music appreciates with time.

3 out of 5 stars I don't like the choice of"Jekyl and Hide" and"Winter tree".......2003-03-25

Well finally the album "Novella" is well represented (my complaint in the previous "Tales of...vol 1 regarded the lack of such jewels from Novella and also the absence of the title track from "Ashes are burning", here present ... but I didn't know the choice of the songs inside vol 2); instead the absence of "Opening out" from "A song for all seasons" is hard to accept...moreover some tracks from the disappointing album "Azure d'Or" are not so memorable in my opinion, apart from the usual stunning vocal performance by Annie Haslam!! The output is anyway good, as for the presence of the fantastic track "A song for all seasons", and for this reason I let you make your own choice!!

5 out of 5 stars 1001 nights of great music.......2001-07-13

I own all albums by Renaissance, and would not go without this collection or Volume 1. This is a great collection to have when one just wants to hear the best of Renaissance.

Product Description

While working on the book and film project, "40 Days and 1001 Nights", in which internationally famed bellydancer, Tamalyn Dallal lives in five Islamic countries, writes and films her experiences, she was in Egypt's Siwa Oasis. A Bedouin man asked "Would you like to hear the music from Zanzibar?". He played "Ifkhar", and she fell in love...with the music. That song inspired her journey to Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Africa that used to be part of the Omani Sultanate. "Taarab" is the most popular music of Zanzibar. It began near the turn of the century when the sultan sent musicians to Egypt to study music with the great masters. A unique style emerged, gracefully blending classical Egyptian, East African, and even Cuban sounds. "Taarab" means "Being transported by music". "Bashraf" are instrumental songs also played in Zanzibar. This style originated in Turkey, lives on throughout the Arab world, and Zanzibaris gave it a whole new meaning. On her first day in Zanzibar, a young man approached and asked, what are you looking for? She replied "Taarab".She was led up an old staircase, to the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club, that was formed 101 years ago, and today, it is like the "Buena Vista Social Club" of Zanzibar. Ikhwani Safaa are the creators of her favorite song "Ifkhar", and the only people in the world who play it. Ms. Dallal and Ikhwani Safaa collaborated on this cd, using Bashraf, and adapting Taarab music to make the perfect, most intense and heartfelt bellydance music on the market. If you like the classic sound of Egypt's "Golden Age", coupled with romanicism of old Havana, with depth and complexity, and no synthesizers, you will love this cd.

The music brings you back in time . The music is pure and if you know the story of how this CD was made, u would love it even more. It is music to your ears!

5 out of 5 stars "The Perfect Belly Dance Music.".......2006-08-23

Arranged for belly dance performances, this CD is a real find not only for dancers but for any World Music enthusiast. It presents new and traditional compositions from the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar, a band that was founded in 1905 and has been playing ever since, passing its music along from each generation to the next. In Zanzibar, its CDs outsell all other music albums combined, though they and their music are virtually unknown beyond the island's shores. The population of Zanzibar, an autonomous island state that is part of Tanzania, is made up of Swahili-speaking Islamic East Africans, and their traditional music, called taarab, is a unique blend of Egyptian-Arabic melodies and instrumentation with the driving rhythms of equatorial Africa and Swahili lyrics. Tamalyn Dallal, the CD's producer, is one of America's top belly dancers and a former Miss World of Belly Dance. She left Florida's South Beach scene a couple of years back after about 25 years as a performer, leader of an internationally known dance company and director of South Beach's MidEastern Dance Exchange studio, to embark on a solo journey of explore through the most remote parts of the Islamic world, teaching, studying regional dance and music styles and gathering material for an ambitious multimedia project - videos, recordings and a planned book. Since she left, many of us who knew her have been following her adventures via the blogosphere. In the liner notes to this CD, she describes how, in Malindi, Zanzibar, she followed a young guide into a back alley and up a wooden staircase to a rooftop. "This is Ikhwani Safaa," he told her. "You should come back in the night." She did, spent evening after evening at the club, and realized, "This is the perfect belly dance music." And Dallal knows what she's talking about, as this CD proves.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excelent world album.......2000-02-06

I have a lot of world music samplers and a consistant problem with them is that they are not consistant. But this album has 7 diffrent tracts from 7 diffrent cultures and every one of them is a gem.
