The Real Thing.......2004-09-07

Great stuff... I was so thrilled to hear the original versions of two songs (Someday Baby Blues and Floatin' Bridge) that I've been playing for the last zillion years, I just couldn't stop listening for a whole day. To tell the truth, when I first listened to Eric Clapton's version of Floatin' Bridge, I had thought that it had something to do with the floating bridge of an arch-top acoustic of hollow-body electric guitar!

In any case, the vocals are strong, the guitar is great and the recording (or remastering) quality is even better. Well, that is, it is much better than some remasters that I have listened to. The "less is more" approach of Estes once again proves that you don't have to perform left-hand acrobatics on the neck to play the blues. On the contrary, the sound always comes first, one note could do much more to bring tears to your eyes rather than 64 1/64 notes crammed into a second.

If you like acoustic blues, this is definitely a must for your shelf.

Magnificent Tennessee blues.......2004-01-25

Bringing together 23 songs recorded between 1929 an 1941, "I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More" is as close to a definitive retrospective of Sleepy John Estes's music as possible. Virtually all of his best songs are here, varied, inventive tunes featuring pseudo-autobiographical lyrics loaded with evocative imagery.

The period covered by this CD was John Adams Estes' best and most creative, cathing him at the height of his considerable powers. He usually recorded with a jug band, which gave his music a great variety of textures...mandolin player James "Yank" Rachell and harpist Hammie Nixon are prominent on most of these songs, and Estes is occationally backed by piano and second guitar as well.

Big Bill Broonzy called Estes' singing style "crying" because of his emotional delivery and light tenor voice, but there is nothing morose or self-pitying about John Estes' music. It swings with a loose, relaxed feel that isn't heard on many prewar blues records, and it is some of the most melodic acoustic blues you'll ever hear.
"I Ain't Gonna Be Worried No More" contains all-time classic blues tunes like "The Girl I Love, She Got Long Curly Hair", "Someday Baby Blues", and "Diving Duck Blues", as well as the title track, "Every Ought To Make A Change", "Drop Down Mama", "Clean Up At Home", and the frighteningly realistic "Floating Bridge".
Acoustic country blues doesn't get any better than this.

Country Blues String Band Style.......1999-12-13

It's not often that you get to hear old blues artists within a band setting. Usually it's just one guy and his acoustic guitar. What sets Mr. Estes' blues apart is the inclusion of mandolin, harmonica, fiddle, and occasional piano. His own guitar picking and his, dare I say, cute voice, make this CD irresistable. The music is catchy and the thoughtful lyrics are easily decipherable. As far as I'm concerned, no blues collection is complete without this CD.

Spectacular Mantovani Music.......2004-09-20

This is one of Vocalion's latest re-issues of two original recordings made by Mantovani and his Orchestra in 1960. It pairs the folk songs of the "American Scene" composed by Stephen Foster and others, along with concert gems, all brilliantly arranged by Mantovani and his collaborator Cecil Milner. Stephen Foster's time-honored music appears to be having a comeback these days and so will the utterly appealing orchestral interpretations given to these chestnuts by the masterful brilliance of the Mantovani sound and the artistry and discipline of his musicians. Some 45 years ago, Mantovani's American Scene LP remained 30 weeks on Billboard's Top 40 List and rose to a high position of number 11. Listeners now, as then, will enjoy the melifluous string-laden arrangements of Beautiful Dreamer, I Dream of Jeannie, My Old Kentucky Home, Grandfather's Clock, and Goodnight Irene, and they will tap to the lively, full orchestra arrangements of Camptown Races, Ring de Banjo, and Turkey in the Straw. Decca's "Concert Spectacular" CD, never issued and rarely heard in the United States, teases the listener with a distinctive waltz time arrangement of the popular Sousa march, Stars and Stripes Forever. Many will shed a tear when they hear the cathedral sound of languorous strings and woodwinds in Danny Boy. This Concert Spectacular offers the listener a plethora of musical imagery. With extraordinary and unique orchestrations, one will feel the fiery excitement of "Granada", sense the clash of thunder and lightning in Strauss's Polka, and march step and "fall" with the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. These two CD's together are truly spectacular, because their tracks are filled with the emotion and energy of the creative and distinctive Mantovani sound. Since his street-corner-playing days in Buffalo and on through nearly 30 years of making music, Peter Case always seemed to find time for a cover of Sleepy John Estes. Case's first album since 2002's Beeline actually goes one better, interpreting the legendary wailing blues master by stripping away adjunct instruments and pining for the carefree busking days where all that mattered were a guitar and a song to sing. And in this setting, not many can write them or sing them like Case. There are flat-picking observations on "two kinds of justice" in "Million Dollar Bail," recollections of Telly Savalas in the small-town predicaments of "Palookaville," and duets with both buddies (Carlos Guitarlos on "Underneath the Stars") and heroes (Richard Thompson on "Every 24 Hours"). There are no Estes covers, but acclimating Robert Wilkins's 80-year-old "Get Away Blues" is expressively close, as every pluck of the 12-string and lyrical tug from deep inside Case's gut does justice to the late Sleepy John. --Scott Holter

Great bargain, great fun.......2004-01-31

This release pairs the earliest recordings by Sleepy John Estes with an almost-complete set of classic tracks by Cannon's Jug Stompers, one of the great rural jug bands of the 1920's. Noah Lewis, high-powered harmonica blower, recorded with Estes, Cannon and his own jug band, supplying the conceptual bridge between the two discs. Lewis's work as a bandleader is included on Disc 1, making this a solid "5-star" set all the way around.

This is a more comprehensive set than either of Yazoo's CJS discs, including their old "Complete Works" CD which features only 23 tracks... As for the sound quality, the digital remastering by John R.T. Davies is excellent, making these old records sound their best without either going overboard or shirking on noise-reduction. Best of all, the music is great fun!
