The snarling grooves of doom on "Angola" symbolize Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart's intent for the last quarter century: to create a global percussion orchestra that merges electronics with rhythms from around the world. Hart could have opted for a seamless conceptual album, moving from the impressionism of "Temple Caves" from Planet Drum and "Compound" from the Apocalypse Now sessions to the power-trance grooves of "Angola" (Supralingua) and "Udu Chant" (also from Planet Drum). Instead, Over the Edge and Back is a sampler that even includes tracks from Hart's vocal album, Mystery Box, which ranged disjointedly from the R&B of "Where Love Goes (Sito)" to the Robert Hunter-penned "Down the Road"--both heard here and sounding lost. Skip those, however, and you'll hear Mickey Hart's rhythmic fantasies. The album goes all the way back to his 1976 album with the Diga Rhythm Band for "Sweet Sixteen," an ecstatic whirl of tuned percussion and hand drums that still sounds vibrant today. The album concludes with the previously unreleased "Call to All Nations" from the opening ceremonies of the 100th Olympiad in Atlanta in 1996. A surreal compression of global music that traverses the world, the track is Mickey Hart's vision of a 21st-century percussion orchestra summed up in about five minutes. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:

I think there is nothing to be gained for the Hart fan here. One would be better off buying the original albums. Buy "Mystery Box" only if you feel in need of aural punishment.
Most of The Best Of Mickey Hart.......2002-08-14
All of the CD is good, but too short. I would have liked to have heard a bit from Hart's first solo effort, Rolling Thunder, but maybe that would have got in the way of contractual agreements between GDM and Ryko Disc.
The songs range from Hart's Diga band piece "Sweet Sixteen" to the Apacolype Now Sessions' "Compound", to Hart's first 90's foray into the world of percussion "On The Edge" with "The Eliminatiors", to Hart's award winning follow-up Planet Drum with tracks "Undo Chant" and "Temple Caves", to a tribute to the combination of music and voice found on Mystery Box tracks, "Where Love Goes (Sito)" and "Down The Road", to the opening track on Supralingua "Angola".
Unfortunately no tracks from "Spirit Into Sound" are to be found on this compilation (again maybe due to the fact that GDM was involved with the distribution of that project).
The real treat of this set comes at the end with Hart and Co. doing a superb Opening Ceramonies piece form the 1996 Olypiad -- called "A Call To All Nations" which is fabulous.
So, in this compilation you have some positives and negatives. If you want to enter and have a taste of Mickey's world, by all means purchase this. Be forwarned though, you might want to pick up the original albums from where these songs originated.

Fueled largely by the endlessly inventive original music chronicled in the first anthology from the hit TV series Alias, young composer Michael Giacchino's rising star quickly led to big screen success via his first major feature, Pixar's computer animated superhero spoof The Incredibles. The composer's rich eclecticism -- one that spans a thumping, contemporary techno club-savvy and brassy winks at the 60's spy-jazz canon in just its opening few cuts -- is still one of the major delights on this collection of cues from Alias' second season. But its second half largely becomes a more dramatically focused, if no less creatively restless showcase for Giacchino's orchestral writing, the scale of which impressively belies its small-screen origins. Its rare to hear TV music that evokes everything from the brooding classicism of Samuel Barber and Bernard Herrmann to more contemporary scoring masters like Goldsmith and Barry -- with a forceful nod to mixmeister Paul Oakenfold in the bargain -- but it's all here on this compelling showcase for one of film music's most promising new stars. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Featuring more of composer Michael Giacchino's thrilling music sort of a techno/club take on the classic James Bond sound. Giacchino's scores for the episodes of Season 2 received even greater acclaim than his first 22 episodes. Also included is the heart-stopping main title theme composed by series creator J.J. Abrams.Customer Reviews:

Fans of Negativland no doubt are also fans of my favorite Clorox Cowboy, David Wills- The Weatherman!
In this ear candy he outdoes himself, coming out of the closet and admitting to having sex with electronic equipment! ANd the rest of negativland outdo themselves by mixing all the little snippets of obscure samples to liven up the mix of the Weatherman's nasal whinings, his callers reaction to him instructing them the proper pronunciation to "Hom-O-Sexual." (not hom-a-sexual)
Be prepared to get a new and weird understanding on "one of us" and if you are "one of us," get ready to laugh your head off and get sonicly stoned on the ultimate media pirates!

Meet the Family!.......2006-09-26
The Weatherman is as obsessed with electronics as I am, (although, unlike the Weatherman, I never attempted to have sex with electronic equipment) then you gotta meet his family in this album! David in his childhood had an obsession with a tape recorder and recorded so many Weatherman Thanksgivings and Weatherman Christmases, and even recorded his cat hiss, the rain, toads croaking and parakeets fighting! All these snippets of Family sounds of years gone by are wonderfully mixed by Negativland to create a surreal picture of the "Average American Home!"
Best of all is his father and mother's and grandmother's voices! One would think that only David could have such a whining slurry voice! But after listening to this compilation you see that all the rest of his family have the same rasping whining voice! The only difference in hearing his mother talk and David talk, is his mother can sing and hold a note, while the Weatherman....his singing is atrocious!
David Wills--The Weatherman.......2005-04-19
it is my favorite. I got lost in a world of confused psychotic
bliss. This issue of the "Over the edge" radio compilations has home recordings from the weatherman and his family sitting around eating turkey and talking about cleansers, coffee, cable tv. cats
as well as the weathermans early childhood of giving the weather report and also battling the monkeys. Not just old tapes, but the usuall receptacle programing[unedited live phone calls] collage
scapes that will spin your head around. I hear something new every time. Over the edge rules and can be accesed thru the
negativland web site and if you dont like it, TOUGH DARTS!!!.

Album Description
Professor Louie & The CrowmatixOver The Edge
Professor Louie & The Crowmatix have just released their first CD for Breeze Hill Records entitled Over The Edge. Aaron Louie Hurwitz long time co-producer and engineer for groups such as The Band, Mercury Rev, Four Men & A Dog, David Nelson Band, and Rick Danko Band, comes up front on this CD as singer, performer and writer. The Crowmatix released a CD in 1998 entitled Levon Helm & The Crowmatix - Souvenir, Vol. 1 on The Woodstock Records label. Over The Edge consists of ten songs, five of which, are originals by Professor Louie and his co-writing singer, partner Marie Spinosa. One song on the CD a soulful ballad No Division-Heart And Soul was also co-written with The Bands Rick Danko who Professor Louie performed and recorded with for many years as a duo. Over The Edge is a musical blend of Rock, Folk and R'n'B. The opening track Restless Islands written by Kevin Doherty of Irelands Four Men & A Dog has a strong lead vocal by Professor Louie, great harmony with The Crowmatix and some fine mandolin playing by Levon Helm. The title track of this CD is the tune Over The Edge an exciting original song with great drumming from Gary Burke, groovin' bass playing by Mike Dunn and funky piano playing from Louie. The Great Beyond an extremely well written original song bound to become a classic piece of music has a moving lead vocal by Professor Louie. It features fine guitar work by Jim Eppard weaving in and out of the vocals to build to the end of the song and then fades out with tearful whistling. Tear Of The Clouds a song written about a train on the Hudson Line changes to Marie Spinosa singing the lead vocal. This song uses a blend of acoustic instruments, mandolin, accordion, jaw harp, and acoustic guitar with some wild synthesis bringing a fresh combination of sound to a strong rhythm track. Over The Edge continues to hold your interest by bringing in a horn section that The Crowmatix have worked with for five years, live in concert and in the studio. On this original track A Few Hours. Tom Bones Malone from the David Letterman show arranged the horns and also plays trombone along with the tenor sax of Lenny Pickett from the group Tower of Power. The world-renowned bari sax of Ronnie Cuber and the trumpet playing of Jim Hynes round out the horn section, which can be heard on four songs on this CD. The song Someone is a near perfect rendition of an obscure R'n'B song by the great singer Etta James. It shows Marie Spinosa's depth of vocal range and unique interpretation and the highlight is a call and response vocal ending with the Crowmatix background vocals and the horn section. The same rings true on a little known Ashford and Simpson composition Runnin Out where the horns and The Crowmatix breakout into a jamming ending. Over The Edge utilizes many different instruments and in the song No Division-Heart And Soul Garth Hudson adds some great keyboard lines. The beautiful string section arranged by the violinist Larry Packer compliments the soulful singing of Louie and the high background vocals of Marie Spinosa. An exciting version of The Bands Endless Highway sung by Professor Louie brings out the skills of his Hammond organ playing along with the virtuosity of guitar player Mike Demicco. A final jam on The Grateful Dead song Scarlet Begonias rounds out the fifty-four minute CD with Louie on lead vocals and accordion, great Hammond organ work by The Band's keyboardist Garth Hudson and a moving trombone solo by Tom Malone. Special guests Barry Sless and Mookie Siegel from David Nelson Band round out the jam that brings out the musicianship and singing of The Crowmatix.
