Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

This is the sixth studio album by The Stone Coyotes, a family trio who play bare-bones, literate American rock.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rock AND Roll!.......2006-10-29

Barbara Keith had an eponymous vinyl LP in 1972 that I tracked down and purchased on CD (well worth the effort) learning in that search about her subsequent band, 'The Stone Coyotes'. All (so far) seven Coyotes' albums are terrific, with, in my opinion, "fire it up" and "Situation Out of Control" being the stand-outs. "Barbara Keith" was folk with considered lyrics. Barbara Keith brings every bit of that intelligent poetic sensibility to hard-core rock and roll with 'The Stone Coyotes'.

5 out of 5 stars The Stone Coyotes Continue to Amaze.......2005-04-20

I do not look forward to new albums put out by artist that I admire. Throughout my life I have been disappointed. Surprise! Surprise ! The Stone Coyotes dashed that theory and simply amazed me with their gut wrenching rock and roll and outstanding lyrics. From "All Dressed Up" to "Wakeup" the songs are all great. "Rectified" with its tale of murder sent chills down my back with its driving beat and tale of revenge. "Stars in Her Eyes" is one of the best songs of childhood dreams I've ever heard. Barbara Keith's phrasing is outstanding. The Ghost of Vicksburg settles the middle section of tracks with a great sentimental ballad of the Civil War. Next crank up the volume on The Girls of America. Major Powers chords about Girls who wantto rock. My daughter is now an avid Coyote Fan. This album is great.

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars A very uneven album.......2001-04-03

I normally like Tinsley Ellis' albums, but this one is the exception. It doesn't really hold together with any cohesion, and was evidently the result of (at least)two different sessions. The ones with the basic band of Bob McNeely (guitars) Scott Koziol(bass and Tad Parker (drums)[tracks 1,2,6,9 and 10] are tight and show off Ellis' guitar playing. I'd guess that this was his road band at the time; it certainly sounds like it. Producer Tom Dowd evidently wanted more tracks and variation, so the other tracks have a different band ( Duck Dunn on bass) with the augmentation of Kevin McKendree (keyboards) on some tracks.Best track from this session is Magic Sam's "Look what you done", but on the album as a whole pick are "Diggin'my own grave" and "One sunny day". If you're new to Tinsley Ellis buy another album first.

5 out of 5 stars one of their best cds.......2006-05-08

The Kottonmouth Kings blaze again on thier highly anticpated album, "Fir It Up." With a style all their own, KMK a sure to be around for many years to come. This album is sure to please both new and old KMK fans. An instant classic! As they have just begun work on thier follow-up to "Fire It Up," there is word that we could see some guest apperances from members of the Psychopathic camp. Is it possible that we will finaly here a collabortation from ICP and KMK? We can only hope so. There was also word that KMK are working on a song with The Game of G-Unit! buy this if you are a fan of underground rap. its great.

Legalize Freedom: Just a little track with chanting and Daddy X talking bout legalize freedom. 1/5

In Da House: The beat is cool and chilled out, D-Loc and Richter are rapping bout girls, weed and partying, decent song 4/5

Bring It On: Great song, beat is cool, Daddy X is cool on this, this is a song against the haters. 5/5

Outcast: Well this track mixes punk with rap, its starts off punk which i wasnt feeling, then goes good with the rap beat and rapping then goes back to punk which i dont like. 2/5

Angry Youth: The beat took me some time getting used to, but the lyrics and chanting helps it alot. 4/5

The Deal: This song is bout Richter and D-loc goin to a drug deal and eventually busted, beat is cool and verse are ok. 4/5

Who's The Criminal: Another Punk Rap song and this one am feeling, its about why cops would put a gun to ya face just cause you are smoking a joint and its the cops who are the criminals. 5/5

Eye Of The Storm: Another short track with Daddy X talking just random things. 1/5

Bad Habits: Awesome song , nice acoustic beat and really mellow, this is a cool laid back song. 5/5

Johnny's Gotta Problem: I find this a pretty cool song, D-Loc and Daddy X think Richter got a problem, all deliver the goods on here. 4/5

Life Styles: A song about the way they live, the chorus is pretty crap but the rapping and beat make up for that. 4/5

Lets F**k: This song is pretty crap, the beat is naff, the chorus is horrible, the only think i like about it is Daddy X verse. 2/5

Down 4 The Krown: A decent beat with some decent lyrics, but a song i seem to skip, not a bad song it just doesnt grab me. 4/5

Leave Us Alone: Punk Rap, for me the same with the Outcast song i find the middle part decent with the rapping but i wasnt feeling the opening and ending of punk. 3/5

Ur Done: Straight up Punk Song and am feeling this one, its only short at 1.34 but it definatly gets you pumped up. 5/5

Skunk One: This song is pretty cool, the chorus is pretty cool, nothing great, every one delivers the good on here. 4/5

Live To Day: A nice positive song about living ya life everyday to the fullest, good song. 4/5

Rip The Night Away: Another cool positive song, nice song something to lay back and chill to, great ending to a dissapointing album. 4/5

Like i said a dissapointing album by the KMK, it doesnt hold a candle to High Society, but it does have some nice highlights.

4 out of 5 stars give kmk some credit.......2005-09-25

this may not be their best album to date, but it is not that bad of a record. yeah, they got some more punk on here, but it's not that bad. they've got some decent songs on here. i've been a fan since royal highness just like a lot of other people, and wasn't totally impressed with fire it up. but it's a great album to listen to when you're on the road. if every kmk album were to sound exactly like the first one, then you would get tired of them. there's nothing wrong with artists doing something a little different from the last album. i wasn't that big of a fan of rollin stoned either.
the best songs are: fire it up, bring it on, the deal, and ur done

1 out of 5 stars Fire it up....just not to this.......2005-05-20

I've liked KMK since high society, however long ago that was. I never listened to stoners reeking havok that much but i did like pimp twist. I've liked everything from royal highness until rollin stoned. I remember driving back from sacramento headed back home near l.a. i picked up the cd to listen to on the way back. after i got home i was pissed, i threw the cd out the window cuz it sucked so bad. there's nothing special on the cd. they're not that good at mixing hiphop with a majority of rock. they suck at it. i've liked all the other cd's they've put out. they just messed up on this album. hopefully their next one will be better.

      Product Description

Their second album Peace Treaty was originally released in 1991 on Pakaderm Records. The cost and hassles involved in getting it re-issued finally resulted in the band deciding instead to re-record it, and re-release it on Retroactive Records May, 2006. The band had never been fully pleased with the album as it was originally released, so took advantage of this opportunity to add heavier guitars, more solos, and make other changes they had wanted to for years. The ballad 'Hold On' was removed, and newly written song 'Fire It Up' replaced it. The AC/DC vibe of this new song so typified their style of commercial heavy metal that they decided to name the album after it. This new song should give old fans a taste of what is to come, as plans are in the works to release a whole album of new songs in the Fall of 2006 tentatively titled Back In Red. Fans of AC/DC and Def Leppard (especially their Pyromania era), Idle Cure, and Zion will love it. Songs include: 'Fire It Up,' 'I Take Power,' 'Gotta Let Go,' 'Rollin' Thunder,' 'Getch Ya,' 'Don't Go,' 'Peer Pressure,' 'We Need Love,' 'All I Need,' and 'You Got Me.'

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars rock rock till you drop.......2006-08-29

Interesting thing about music. 1,000 people and the same amount of differing opinions. I think remixing or remastering or whatever, helped this album a lot. The Elefante produced version was pretty thin sounding, losing some of the crunch, especially in the lower registers. No knock on the Pakaderm bros. but I love the remastering. The sound overall is very and I mean very, def leppardish, circa Pyromania. The new song is decent, leans a little more AC/DC and has the swagger this kind of rock should come with. And after this many years it was a blast to hear this again and remember when good 80's rock had that swagger. I would have given it 4 stars but I wanted to balance the 3 star review. A good hard driving straight ahead old school metal album. Buy it.

3 out of 5 stars Not really as described.......2006-07-26

First of all, I am an X-sinner fan and have been for years, but this release was not what I expected. It was described as a re-recording of the original Peace Treaty album, because they were not satisfied with that release. I was expecting something like Whitecross did with their 1987 re-recording. Same songs, but they obviously started from scratch. This sounded much more like the original recordings with some guitar tracks overdubbed on them. While it improves the weakest two songs from Peace Treaty (Getch Ya, and Peer Pressure); the overdubs are overdone on Gotta Let Go. Take this disc for what it is: a Remix. If your old Cassette of Peace treaty is worn out like mine was, this is a suitable replacement that won't cost you $25-$30 like on Ebay. But, they obviously owe a lot more to Pakaderm Records and the Elefante brothers than they give them credit for, since the tracks they were dissatisfied with sound basically the same now. Anyway, Peace Treaty was a good, but not great disc, and this one is roughly the same. But I was happy to hear the annoying "Hey Kid, Get ovaa Heeaa" was removed from the intro to Peer Pressure." Given all that, however, I would still recommend it.
