Career overviews programmed by the artists themselves are generally inconsistent affairs, usually due to the musicians' own eccentricities. For Duchess of Coolsville, this long-overdue Rickie Lee Jones compilation covering the years 1979-2003, she decided to sequence most of the songs in alphabetical order. It's a unique, yet rather bizarre, concept that dispenses with all sense of continuity, either chronological or musical. While this randomness behooves an artist as willfully eclectic as Jones, it also makes for a rollercoaster listening experience. Selecting tracks from 10 albums that alternately focused on folk, jazz, pop standards, and even electronica makes putting together any compilation of Jones's work a tough assignment, especially since each of her records has a distinctive flow. The 34 selections on the first two discs hit most, but not all, of the highlights from her often patchy releases. Disc 3 unearths seven demos, some live tracks, and several collaborations, few of which are revelatory. Long in need of a sonic shining, these songs sparkle with fresh remastering, revealing production details most listeners will hear for the first time. While not the best or most coherent collection of Rickie Lee Jones's work that could have been assembled, this anthology provides a reasonably good overview of the Duchess of Coolsville's diverse, distinctive, and often dynamic career. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
Rickie Lee Jones' career ascent began after famed rock front man Lowell George recored her composition "Easy Money" for a Little Feat album. As an inimitable song stylist, she first made her indelible mark with the scat-flavored hist "Chuck E's In Love" from her acclaimed 1979 self-titled debut LP. Ever since, Jones has blazed an artististically idiosyncratic path on a long string of beautiful, adventurous, and personal albums. Her more-than-distinctive vocals encompass rock, jazz, blues, classic pop, folk, and R&B inflections...Textured with fluent wordplay and delivered with true heart, Rickie Lee's sound is one of the most authentic and original in contemporary music.Customer Reviews:

Surprisingly, a little disappointing.......2007-01-20
It was probably a wise business decision for Rhino records to attempt this collection instead of simply remastering those first two masterpiece albums. I don't consider it an artistic triumph, however.
On the plus side, Rhino has equalized or otherwise processed the original material so carefully that songs from different recording venues using different techniques of recording (digital and analog) sound now sound organically whole and integrated with each other. Mainly this involved cutting down a lot of the high frequency content of the originals, rendering Rickie Lee's voice less piercing, but also de-emphasizing the percussion and the brilliant overtones of the guitars. That's not an unreservedly good thing, but it works in the context of making an anthology album.
The alphabetical organization of the tracks does not really work, either. Normally such collections are laid out chronologically, and that probably would have been a better choice here, except that it would have made the falloff in the quality of RLJ's recordings more evident.
The bonus tracks, demos, and miscellaneous on disc three are interesting for the RLJ fan. I don't see them as having lasting replay value.
Listening to this set has lowered Rickie Lee Jones' art in my estimation. I already own most of her records in one format or another. But if this is supposed to RLJ's best, then one must admit that the best of albums like Magazine and Ghostyhead are a bit overrated. Rhino should just get on with remastering her first and second albums.

An excellent Warlock compilation!.......2003-04-19
Ian Partdidge's "The Curlew" is as good a performance as you will find of this song cycle. Also among my favorites are "Bethlehem Down," an utterly haunting & touching Christmas carol; a wonderful arrangement of the song "The Lady's Birthday;" also another carol, "Where riches is everlastingly."
Everything on this album is simply excellent. If you are already a Warlock devotee, you will be very happy with this; if you are just getting introduced to Warlock, you could not have picked a better CD!
The best Warlock disc you can purchase.......2001-12-18

BROADWAY: The formative years.......2004-09-30
The years covered in this set show how European style operettas wer slowly giving way to a more jazz-oriented American musical comedy style. Victor Herbert, Jerome Kern, and Sigmund Romberg (among others) were setting the stage for the modern American musical.
Listeners should be aware that all the recordings in this set date from the "acoustic" period of recording and have limited range. The metal horns that collected the sound and cut it into wax discs were not ideal for soloists and worked best with brass and percussion. The shellac surfaces of the pressed records had a hissing sound and the steel needles often distorted the music. The few pressings that have survived in playable condition are gathered here, but be aware these are recordings nearly 100 years old!
Those I haven't daunted are in for a treat, for once you get past the antique sound you discover a wealth or musical material and a glimpse into a Broadway very different from what it would eventually become.

Product Description
Mark Nicholas is a Detroit-based electronic musician, well known in the Synthpop community as the man behind the band Cosmicity. Cosmicity was active from 1994-2003. Now recording under his given name, Mark has shed the confines of pristine, 80's-influenced Synthpop for a modern hybrid electronic sound; a sound he's calling Dirty Electronic. There's nothing pristine or elegant about the synthesizers and computer-generated noises you'll hear on "Duchess 33". In fact, everything is just a little bit filthy, from the production straight through to the lyrics. Distortion-washed vocals... grinding bass... crunchy drum machines... yet it's all working together with the kind of precision that only well-produced electronic music contains. Fan favorite tracks include "Backlash", "Green", "Perverse", and "Little Goth Girl", the latter of which chronicles the story of a "straight-edge" entering a Goth club for the first time. "Duchess 33" has drawn early comparisons to Prodigy and Depeche Mode, however, like most satisfying new music, it's generally difficult to categorize. A recent fan e-mail to Mark probably says it best: "Dude, seriously... the new songs kick ass! ...it has elements of Goldfrapp, Nine Inch Nails, and even DM, yet it sounds very unique."Customer Reviews:
Enough meat for TWO sandwiches.......2007-02-08
My one complaint is with the artwork. It's not bad in and of itself. It's kind of fun and kitschy and whatnot... It just doesn't work for me somehow. It seems TOO fun and kitschy and ridiculous, while the music, for the most part, is not. Sure, there are songs about threesomes and the like, but it's not fluffy stuff here. I would have preferred something darker - or even something more minimalistic, like the Cosmicity album covers. But maybe that's just me.
Anyway, the bottom line is that Mark started 2007 off with a tremendous bang and set the bar extremely high for any other new albums. With an album this close to perfect, I dare anyone else to release anything remotely this good!
Pure Genius.......2007-02-07
Green is a great opening track it kind of has a certain ambiance to it with the melody in between versus. I think Mark is very strong when it comes to writing good melodies and this track is a testament to that. To me it's the kind of track that goes well when listening to it late at night. I love the lyrics on this track especially the chorus.
Track 02: Backlash
We kind of get an idea of what Dirty Electronic means when we listen to Backlash. This song and most of the album is layered in lots of great analogue sounds. They always have kind of a crunchy or dirty sound to them. The song has a great rhythm throughout. Lyrically this song refers to the response that Mark had gotten with his bonus DVD for his second Cosmicity compilation. I really didn't pay much attention to it but from what I gathered it was blown way out of proportion and I always felt that the content on the DVD was harmless so whatever I liked the DVD and I love this song. The drums remind me a little of Discoteca/Single by the Pet Shop Boys.
Track 03: Perverse
Perverse is a very up tempo in your face song. It has excellent sounds throughout. I think the lyrics are self explanatory. To me it's very Nitzer Ebb. I just love the rhythm. I can see this track being a single.
Track 04: I'm Trying To Impress You
At the moment this is probably my favorite track on the entire record (That's if you forced me to pick one). The melody in between verses is just awesome, I love it. It has a great mixture of analogue sounds. I love the lyrics I can relate to them. Overall this track just has such a nice groove to it.
Track 05: Two Sandwiches
I love the instrumentation on this track. The voices in this track are actually a recording that Mark did while playing a particular online game. I find what the guy says to be a little disgusting. Personally if this song was just an instrumental it would have been great for me. Others might like it more but it's a taste kind of thing for me.
Track 06: Little Goth Girl
What a brilliant track. I love how this sounds. I love all the melodies through out the entire thing. The harpsichord solo and instrumental towards the end of the song is so great. I'd love to see a 12 inch version of this track with that part really being focus on somehow. I would do it myself if I could, that's how much I love it. The chorus is very in your face and I just love it.
Track 07: Coming Clean
In a way this song reminds me of the Cosmicty track Digital Delays because of how the chorus sounds. This song has a really powerful beat to it. I like how it's kind of minimal during the verses then really picks up during the chorus. The lyrics in the chorus are great the. The song overall has a lot of sexual references, especially in the chorus with "I know tonight won't go as planned, but I want to anyway."
Track 08: I Wish
I honestly thought this track was going to be a serious ballad when I first read the lyrics. However it is not but I think it could have worked well as one. I think a lot of people can relate to the lyrics but they describe someone wanting to be something else then what they are but they will never get what they really want. I love the lyrics on this track. Instrumentally I love the bass groove through out the entire song it has a very nice rhythm. In a way the bass reminds me a little of Lie To Me by Depeche Mode.
Track 09: The Measure Of Pleasure
I like how this track starts off then when the bass and drums kick in it gets even better. This song does have a ballad feel to it and apparently an earlier version was a more of a ballad (I'd love to hear that version too). Again another great track. I love the lyrics they are very haunting to me.
Track 10: Selective Memory Loss
This is technically the final track on the record. I've always had a theory that the last track on a record can really make or break the entire record. I love a really epic or really depressing track with very personal lyrics to be on the end of a record. It has a very minimal feel to it. The lyrics sort of remind me of Numb by the Pet Shop Boys. They are very relatable. Overall this is a great track as well.
Track 11: Eine Kleine Booty Musik
This is actually a bonus track. Mark wrote it for a Dodge Ram commercial. It is pretty much an instrumental. I like the instrumentation. The lyrics kind of have a hip hop style. Not really my taste but the track has a nice groove to it. I think Mark says it best by saying he loves a happy ending. I think this is one.
Overall I just simply love this record. It is very experimental. Great melodies through out the entire thing. A lot of the tracks are up beat. The lyrics have more of a darker tone then what Mark used to write as Cosmicity. This definitely deserves a wide audience. It shows a lot of hard work was put into it. You can't really label this record with one genre but I think maybe Dirty Electronic sums it up. BUY IT!!!
