About the Artist
George Elliot: How He Spent the Last 20 Years.
This guy, from his tiny space capsule of a studio in Manhattan's East Village, has been 'quietly'--a song a day-- and single-handedly been changing the potential sound and direction of pop music!
He was a founding member of the New Wave Band 'Come On', whose friends and supporters included David, Chris and Tina of Talking Heads, David Bowie and Brian Eno; also the 80's multimedia group outfit/big band 'Strange Party' (called "the best party band in New York" by the Soho News....whose video song "imitators" appeared on Sony DancePak #2 in Japan). George was also a friend of and songwriter for Klaus Nomi (with 2 cuts appearing on Nomi's 2nd RCA album "Simple Man", a platinum seller!).
Over the years, George has pursued two main passions; the reading and practice of eastern and western spirituality, and the daily recording of original music in a pop/folk/rock/reggae/grungeless/harmonic/humorous/psychedelic/ percussive style! Many of these recent songs are known and enjoyed by an 'elite' few as the multi-CD set, Gnostic Songs.
By churning out literally hundreds of songs over the last several years, George has attained a fluency with his minimal 4-track system that, when augmented by Paul Goldman's digital mixing/mastering skills, give listeners the best of a post-modern lo-fi spontaneity and ambience with state of the art sonics. George spices up his joyous eccentric, mystical original material with choice cover gems of pop history written by some of his favourite 'mentors', including Marc Bolan, John Lennon, Bryan Ferry and Gene Clark.
So, sit back for 10 minutes and listen to 5 of George Elliots mini-pop 'masterpieces', or load up your CD changer with GNOSTIC SONGS VOL.1-6, and immerse yourself for 5 hours in the musical world of a man who could be labeled "the Kerouac of the 4 track'; the "Picasso of the portastudio!', God's gift to pop (the Devil's) music!"

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. This album every bit as accomplished as the book. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2007-02-14
I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.
Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02
With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).
Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18
Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.
Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10
I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.
Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11
I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Customer Reviews:
Two of Lytle's greatest LPs on one disc.......2006-12-09
This disc consists of the music from two LPs by master-vibist Johnny Lytle, recorded in 1962 & 1963. The LPs in question are "Moon Child" and "Got That Feeling." The music is spectacular and the musicianship impeccable. The Johnny Lytle trio consists of vibes, drums, and organ, and this core trio is augmented by additional talent on each LP, including Milt Hinton (bass) and Ray Barretto (congas). Lytle's playing is profoundly clear, bright and colorful. He was a true musician, and he places each delicious note in the exact perfect place every time, with his lightly funky swing always on the mark. Lytle could not have better accompaniment than the bluesy, churchy organ of Milt Harris, and the buoyant, sizzling drums of Peppy Hinnant. Together with the additional musicians, they create a sound that is magical and totally enveloping. This is swinging, sparkling, effervescent music; crisp and colorful, cool and bluesy, relaxed, exotic, and always refreshing. "Soul" should be worked into that description as well. The sequencing of the LPs could not be better either, as they shift from slow ballad to bluesy swing, to up-tempo workout without ever losing touch with the overall narrative spell. Lytle's chosen instrument is fitting, as he is all about creating a "vibe," and taking the listener away to someplace beautiful, joyous, and timelessly cool. I'm not kidding when I tell you that a mystic spell seems to be cast by these musicians, and it enchants from the infectiously optimistic groove of the first track, "Got That Feeling," straight through to the intense, gospel-fueled swing of the closer, "The House Of Winchester."
The Johnny Lytle Trio was; Johnny Lytle (vibes), Milt Harris (organ), Peppy Hinnant (drums).
GOT THAT FEELING (1963), featured the addition of Milt Hinton on bass.
MOON CHILD (1962), featured the addition of Steve Cooper on bass, and Ray Barretto on conga.
Over 75 minutes of music, and not a second worth skipping. This is a true gem, and a real reward for those of us who bother to search for such things. I rate this an absolute solid five, with no reservations and very high enthusiasm. In my humble opinion, this material is classic.
ENJOY!
P.S. - Lytle released an album called "Moonchild" (one word) in 1991, and it is a completely different recording from the "Moon Child" (two words) that makes up half of this set. Even the All Music Guide has this information messed up, so beware.

Customer Reviews:
American Song Potpourri.......2000-08-01
The 28 songs on this CD provide a broad spectrum of American art songs. JanDeGaetani possesses a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and ideally expresses the proper emotions these songs require. Gilbert Kalish's piano supplies the necessary support without getting in the way of the singer. All in all, this is a good collaboration.
Kalish plays like a pig........1999-12-02
While I enjoyed De Gaetani's singing, Kalish's piano playing reminded me of a player piano.
a beautiful rendition of 20th Century American Song.......1999-06-06
This is a great album. It spans the spectrum of 20th Century American music from the tonality and romanticism of Stephen Foster to the experimentality of John Cage.
Jan DeGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, with their understanding and sensitivity to the music of their time, combine to form a duo that sets the standard for interpretation of this music.
Students, professionals, and general classical music lovers will cherish this CD in their library.
If you want an introduction to American Music of this Century, this album provides the most accessible doorway to the widest array of styles I have heard.

Customer Reviews:
A real gem for all trombone and brass enthusiasts.......2007-05-18
This is another superb performance by Alessi, Hartman, Lawrence and Bollinger. These players are extremely gifted musicians. The musicality and technical prowess of these players is first rate. They play beautifully as an ensemble and the entire disc is very enjoyable. This should be required listening for all aspiring trombonists and brass enthusiasts.
Another Great Trombone CD from the 4 of a Kind Guys.......2004-01-06
I purchased the first 4 of a Kind CD shortly after it came out in 92. At the time there weren't many "Classical" Trombone CDs (well ok I admit it, I bought it on Cassette Tape), and the release of this item was a real find for me. I loved the tape. It was just great to hear what a trombone could sound like in the hands of a master.
As an amateur trombonist of more than 30 years, it has been very tough to develop as a player as there aren't many audio resources available to help you with things like sound and approach. At the time of the casette's release, the cassette was a real find, and I was happy to add it to my collection of trombone playing resources.
Well, it is almost 11 years later, and I am very happy to add this second great CD to my collection now. As a student and a listener, there is so much "to get out" of this CD. From a technical standpoint, the balance of playing, overall musicality of every recorded number, and the many styles presented is a wonderful resource to help you learn to play this great instrument. Of especially significant note is the absolutely beautiful sounds that can be heard, the balance between each and every part, and the perfect tuning of this ensemble (at least to this listener's ears). Things just ring in the high range, and "rattle and roll" down low. Listen for some just great Blair Bollinger Bass Trombone on this CD throughout. The playing and blend is gourgeous, and it is easy to see why these very fine players are so admired.
From a pure listener's standpoint, this album is fun listening and a musical joy to the ear. From the first track to last, this CD is full of musical gems, plenty of good musical ideas, and imaginative and very inspired music making. What becomes clear quickly as you listen is just how obviously much these guys like playing together, and the fun they are having. It comes out over and over again in every number.
There isn't a single clinker on this CD, or anyting that is disappointing or below standard in any way. The "Barber of Seville" is espcially good fun; I could see Elmer and Bugs in my mind as I listened to it (as an aside, if you haven't seen that famous Warner Brothers Cartoon featuring The Barber of Seville excerpts, try to find it, ooh, wait till I get that Wabbit!). On the other hand, I must also profess a real love for baseball, and the tune "Take me Out to The Ball Game". I just loved the arrangement, and the ensemble playing. It was just great. Including the "Crack of the Bat" and fan noise close to the end of the track just tops things off.
I really think these wonderful musicians have produced a truly great CD that obviously was put together with the listener in mind. From a techncial recording standpoint, you don't need to adjust the volume any time while listening to the CD, and the quality of the recording and editing of every tune is just great. Consequently, this CD simply flows by from beginning to end. You will want to play it again and again.
Personally, I very much recommend this CD to Student, Teacher, and music afficinado alike. This is a great CD that will make just a super addition to your musical library, regardless of the reason why you may have bought it!

Deeply satisfying music.......2002-04-03
I first heard Maslanka's Symphony No. 2, 3rd Movement performed by the Wichita State University Band several years ago and immediately fell in love with it. I've somehow managed to damage the CD and I'm gladly replacing it today. I highly recommend this CD not only for the incredible music itself, but also for what I feel is the intensity of the performance, the strength of the soloists and ensemble, and the deep sense of soul they bring to their music. If you're looking for a flawless performance, buy something by the Eastman Wind Ensemble or one of their many equals. If you haven't performed music of this type and caliber, it's easy to nit-pick the infrequent performance problems on this recording. If you're fortunate enough to have been part of a close-knit ensemble and enjoy modern wind music, this is a disc you must own.
Child's Garden of Dreams.......2000-11-02
This pretty much is a must have for anyone serious about good band music. A Child's Garden of Dreams is probably one of the best pieces of band literature ever written. Very fun to play also.

"Eloquent, Exquisite, Exciting".......2004-08-18
"Dreamer" is unquestionably the finest recording of original songs by black composers available today. The singing of tenor, Darryl Taylor is superb and demonstrates a vocal beauty, musicianship, and interpretive sensitivy that is rarely equaled. The selection of poems of poet laureate, Langston Hughes is first rate, and even more important, the songs themselves are original, varied and well written. I think every listener will find "Dreamer" an exciting musical experience, and I predict for Darry Taylor a distinguished career as an interpreter of art songs. For the Naxos price, buy two albums and give one to a friend!
A Gem!.......2002-10-17
This collection is a gem! Langston Hughes was a very "musical" poet who was inspired by a variety of forms, from jazz to classical. His poetry in turn inspired a whole generation of composers, thirteen of whom are represented here in fifteen art songs. Additionally, eight Hughes poems are read by William Warfield.

Customer Reviews:
The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21
I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.
wonderful.......2002-10-22
