Album Description
Legendary British Invasion innovators The Zombies made some of the most sublime melodic pop-rock of the 1960s, and their three Top 10 smashes"She's Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Time Of The Season"are all-time classic hits. Their distinctive sound was due in large part to Colin Blunstone's masterful vocals and Rod Argent's keyboard wizardry. The reunited pair proves that theirs is a timeless partnership with AS FAR AS I CAN SEE . . . , the first studio album of original Zombies material in more than 30 years!Customer Reviews:
Bunnie Lake is No Longer Missing.......2005-02-07
Simply fabulous.......2004-10-21
Although most people I know rank Memphis among their favorites, I'm not so fond of the string arrangement (it sounds a little Disney) and although it's still a great song, compared to the other incredible songs on this album it falls towards the bottom. The titletrack is slowly growing on me 9 months later (it's jazzy, but slow). The only two songs that I can't say are "great" are Southside of the Street, which sounds predictable and cliche (but perfect for Rod's voice), and Look for a Better Way which is slow and draggy.
This album features a wide variety of sounds, all of them wonderful. Highly recommended!
The Zombies -- Still the Living Dead After All These Years.......2004-10-04
For me, the problem tracks are "Southside of the Street" -- a little too sunny and strutting to feel in character for these specialists in sultry bittersweetness -- and what seems the umpteenth redo of "I Don't Believe in Miracles," a fine song which Colin has been trying to make a hit for many years, without success (without commercial success, anyway); your mileage may differ, of course. All in all, this is a classy, uplifting and sometimes moving album which finds these rock veterans palpably rediscovering their passion for the unique musical personality they form together.
"As Far As I Can See" deserves and rewards the support of everyone devoted to The Zombies and their still remarkably contemporary-sounding music.
Give time for their new season.......2004-09-17

Selectively Worthwhile.......2006-01-22
But not all of it bears up to repeated listening. The "Bluegrass" section of the album is worthwhile, but the "Bach>>Beatles" part is awkward. The renditions of "Sleepers Awake" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" sound really thin, and the "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring," one of the more enduringly moving pieces from Bach's body of work, comes across as kind of sleepy. The sound the ensemble gets out of their instruments is big, but not varied, and especially on the three classical pieces that kick of the album, the effect is an unearned sense of being almost tepid.
Because it's fairly inexpensive, this album is probably worth getting for the second half of the playlist, which is very much listenable. But if you're going to play the album more than once you need to be selective in your listening. Worthwhile but spotty, this album is a valiant addition to the canon of mandolin music, but not something that will rest permanently in your CD changer.
Monstrously good!.......2005-05-25
The "bluegrass" is much more than just that with tunes from the genres of jazz, Gypsy, swing, Dawg, new acoustic and old-time music. Contempoary compositions from mandolinist Charlie Provenza and guitarist Roger Hudson are first-rate-and-a-half. It's amazing to hear what these hot pickers do with a number like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," written by Dickey Betts, who was lead guitarist with the Allman Brothers in the sixties and seventies. Then, they can also evoke images of a moonlit evening at a café in Paris with their simply dee-lish appeteaser, "Nuages" from Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. It's a joy to hear musicians of this caliber take on a wide range of material from "Stardust" to "Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe." Ensemble member Butch Baldassari contributes a bouncy original "Jack Rabbit Trail," which provides some icing for this mandocake. Not losing sight of their roots, two traditional numbers close out the album. Walter Carter, mandola player, is deserving of special recognition for his quality and classy arranging of seven of the songs. For a live recording, the sound quality is excellent and fortunately no annoying audience applause is included. This album is monstrously good, and it is further proof that Nashville currently sports one of the finest mandolin ensembles in the world. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

The rich variety of music is representative of tunes from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first century. beautiful songs.......2007-05-09
A flawless and fascinating recital.......2005-04-14
Particularly interesting, to me, were the songs by John Alden Carpenter. Largely neglected by modern singers and scholars, Carpenter wrote what many feel is the most successful fusion of classical music with jazz, the ballet tone-poem "Skyscrapers." It had the misfortune to premiere in 1924, the same year as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; but whereas "Rhapsody" was more of a pastiche, "Skyscrapers" blends the jazz and classical aspects flawlessly, producing an exciting and well-crafted work that deserves a wider audience.
The Carpenter songs presented here are not jazzy, but they do reveal a greater depth of feeling and originality in construction than one hears nowadays from the songs of Andre Previn or Jake Heggie. And the other pieces are equally excellent.
I highly recommend this album, especially for Sunday afternoon or summertime listening...between the excellence of the songs and the excellence of Bogard's singing, you just melt into the music and become one with the warm, intimate feeling that this recital engenders.

Vibrant New Diverse Musical Collection.......2004-10-14
It also represents a true group effort. The distinct vocals of Colin Blunstone are supplemented by wonderful background vocals and arrangements. The songwriting is accomplished and complex. I agree with the reviewer that the collection gets progressively stronger after the first few songs.
"Time To Move" is an excellent rocker and easily could have been a nice follow-up to "Just Out Of Reach" or "Time of the Season". Most of the other selections are more sophisicated but have the Zombies trademark. The diverse musical and vocal arrangements hold and captivate your interest after repeated listening.
This CD illustrates these performers remain energetic and creative with a real passion for their craft. I hope and suspect this music will not represent a closing footnote on this group.
They obvious have a lot left in them and this work compares very favorably with any of the new "singer songwriters" being hyped today.
I would give this a strong 4.5 stars if possible.
I Can't See It!.......2004-08-13
Well worth the wait!.......2004-05-15
The CD is a mix of ballads and more uptempo numbers, and without a doubt, the highlight is 'I Want to Fly,' a haunting ballad that makes the most of Colin's poignant interpretation and Rod's beautiful piano solo. The first single from the CD, 'In My Mind a Miracle,' is a piece of well-crafted white soul music, with the fantastic harmonies you'd expect from a Zombies tune. 'Time to Move' is also a great tune, reminiscent of the 60s, with a Beatles-y feeling. 'With You Not Here' is another winner - a lovely tune with a classic Zombies sound. The only song on the CD that has been previously recorded is Russ Ballard's "I Don't Believe in Miracles,' and this has to be the definitive version. If I have to be critical, I'd say that 'Southside of the Street' is the weakest song on an otherwise very strong album.
This CD presents the Zombies at their best: Colin is in fine voice, Rod plays his heart out in his classic style and there's even a 21-piece string section! Buy it and tell your friends about it.
