Yosemite: Valley of the Giants is another National Park evocation from Mars Lasar, who has been creating music like this for years. His Yanni-esque electro-orchestral compositions, full of sweeping strings, seductive rhythms, and soaring melodies, are perfect for the gift shops at these sites. All he has to do is slap titles like "El Capitan," "Merced River," and "Glacier Point" on his songs and you have an instant memory. Using instrumental samples, Lasar creates an orchestra of sound from strings to flutes and percussion, and he's as good at it as anyone. "Yosemite Valley" is one of the more ominous pieces, opening up with wind and bird cries that evolve into a tribal, vaguely native rhythm topped by gothic voices. "Half Dome" is a triumphant excursion of swelling voices, tribal drums, sampled flute melodies, and, for some reason, Irish uillean pipes--all accompanied by chirping crickets. This is in my opinion the best album Mars Lasar has released.
Just listen to track 4 Tioga Road or even better track 11 Valley of
the Giants - this to me sounds a lot of Vangelises "Heaven and Hell"
with the beautiful vocals.
But I think the entire album is beautiful crafted, of course only in my
opinion. And make no mistake, you must like this type of music
to appreciate it. This is truly the "Valley of the Giants"

Beautiful, but Dramatic.......2005-02-25

I bought this CD because I have many others in the National Park Series collection. I love piano music, and there are some beautiful tracks on this CD. However, some of them start off gentle and peaceful, but become loud and dramatic. I understand that Erlien is trying to capture the magnificent grandeur of Yosemite's physical and spiritual features, but I prefer music that is a little softer and more soothing.

Normally I don't listen to Piano music. This Cd is Piano but it is beautifully performed. When I first heard this I imagined I was living in Yosemite in the 1800's.I know that sounds dumb, but when you hear this CD you might understand why I did that. If you have heard any CD's from " The National Parkes Series" and love them, I assure you you will love this one as well.

These guys are like a breathe of fresh air in a style of music that is just getting so watered down and to be honest out right boring. Soothing instrumental music. Wonderful for going to sleep to. However, beware. If you're planning to rip it to your computer or put it on your iPod, forget it. It has the new protection that will not allow you to rip it to your computer. But it is a really cool CD.

Yosemite Revisited.......2002-10-23

It was early June when I drove and walked through the majestic park as "Vintage Songs of Yosemite" played on my car stereo for the soundtrack. As one who had the opportunity to witness the Fire Fall before it was unfortunately discontinued, I highly recommend this recording if nostalgia is your bag and you want to time-warp back to a simpler time. Tom's project to preserve Yosemite's history through the tunes written about her is impressive. The old and not so old songs include humorous tracks along with the more serious tributes to one of America's grandest national parks. Tom is a first rate pianist as evidenced on this recording, and his nightly "shows" at the Wawona Hotel should not be missed when you visit Yosemite!
