Best Single Disc UK Late 70's Rock Pop Compilation.......2007-05-26

This is really a joy to listen to. So many classic tracks on this compilation. Somewhere between Punk's inspiration and pop's dance ability there were many wondrous pop/rock classics written in the late 70's and a lot of them are here, including the best Pub-Rock/Punk anthem ever from 'Eddie & the Hot Rod's' with "Do Anything you wanna do", the most singalongable song from 77' with 'Tom Robinson Band's' "2-4-6-8 Motorway", the yobbish almost punk stylings of the 'Skids' 'Into the Valley' which kicks off with one of the best opening bass lines in punk/pop history to the completely incomprehensible but insanely singalongable chorus line, the bubbly frantic fun of the 'Rezillo's' "Top of the Pops", the unbelievably wonderful 'Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" (John Peel's favorite record) which is probably worth the price of admission all on it's own, the sexy pulsating punk/pop of 'XTC's' "This is Pop" and the first signs of the huge talents to come from the team of Difford/Tilbrook with the 'Squeeze's' "Take me I'm yours".

Hey I could single out every single track here. This was a time when the '45' was king and that little 7" piece of vinyl had a special place in all our hearts. A truly magical time in the post-punk era showing the best of what the U.K. had to offer. You can't go wrong with this compilation.

Do not get this inferior version!.......2006-02-19

This is a shocking CD, all-too-clearly lifted direct from an LP and absolutely riddled with clicks and pops. Horrible. Avoid like the plague. I can't imagine anyone reviewing such a dire disc positively unless they were trying to sell one.
The version on Silva Screen label is the only one worth having, but it now seems to sell at crazy high prices.
The music itself is excellent and I only hope Silva re-release it sometime soon.

Powerful music that stands on its own.......2003-05-29

If you've seen "The Long Good Friday," you know the value of Francis Monkman's music in the film's overall success-- its propulsive beats move the story along and act as an enriching element. The brilliant opening and closing themes, with their glitzy sax sound, echo the flash of Harold Shand's crime organization, all sheen and flash on the outside, but raw and violent on the inside. The **** film features a **** soundtrack, and it can be listened to time and again (I just put it on again for the 100th time last week-- still sounds fresh.) Warning: one track is a reggae song featuring vocals by Bob Hoskins; those without strong stomachs should avoid. All else is sterling-- buy it.

DELICIOUS LATE 70s ROCK AND REGGAE.......2003-09-29

This excellent compilation brings together a selection of the best late 1970s rock, punk and reggae from the UK. Disc One contains classics like In The City by The Jam, White Riot by The Clash, Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie And The Banshees, Blank Generation by Richard Hell, Oh Bondage by X-Ray Spex, Something Better Change by The Stranglers and Teenage Kicks by The Undertones.

Reggae is represented by Junior Murvin's lilting protest song Police And Thieves, Ku Klux Klan by Steelpulse and War Ina Babylon by Max Romeo. The quirky Typical Girls by The Slits has a skittering reggae rhythm but should properly be called post-punk, and then there's the brilliant 1960s track White Light/White Heat by The Velvet Underground that is appropriately included here since the Velvets exercised such a heavy influence upon the music of the time.

Disc Two has a similar mix of rock, reggae and pop tracks. My favourites include Elvis Costello's Watching The Detectives and the Joe Jackson song (both reggaefied rock), The quirky Rock Lobster by the B-52s, So it Goes - a great pop song by Nick Lowe and Wreckless Eric's charming Whole Wide World. The other great reggae tracks here are Warrior Charge by Aswad and Forces Of Victory by Linton Kwesi Johnson. Jilted John contributes his charming eponymous song and The Cure adds some atmospheric sounds with Boys Don't Cry, whilst the Squeeze, Graham Parker and Ultravox songs also remain memorable.

A Great Taste of a Variety of Punk Bands.......2001-07-25

This CD is wonderful if you are looking to hear a variety of hardcore punk bands. The only problem with this CD is that I think the selection of songs from each band is not the best. It gives a false demonstration of the band's full potential (Ex - Propagandhi.) But if your just getting into punk, and you've heard of some of these bands and would like to hear a sample, then this is a good CD for you. But I would recomend downloading some of the bands' other songs before judging them though.

This is yet another bootleg of the famous Flamin' Groovies. Its a repackaging of other material (more bootlegs) from the mafioso scum running AIM Records in Australia. Instead of buying this ripoff, pick up a copy of "Groovies Greatest Grooves" or Norton's "Slow Death".
