Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

Truck On.......2005-10-07

Heard this by accident last year, and I keep coming back to listen again and again. This is good. Very good. Amazing, considering it's a debut album, and it's hard to believe this is just one guy making all this music by himself. This is Weenish, ala Chocolate and Cheese, but louder and more serious. If you don't like experimental music, don't buy it. It's not straightforward, each track stands by itself, and all are gems. Can't wait to see what he does next time around.

Sneak Attack.......2005-08-27

The Kid snuck up on me in all honesty. I'm not sure how I came across this CD a year ago, but it is rare that a first listen inspires such admiration. I assumed this was just a musician that that was huge, and I was the last one on the bus. It appears however, that you are the last one on the bus, and there is plenty of room. The Kid has compiled one of the most compelling albums on the planet. It makes me believe in the creativity of mankind, and our ability to build on the successes of past genius. The kid builds beats and soaring melodies around samples of his own music, like Moby, on "Love's an Enigma". He sits in front of his synthesizer, strums his guitar, and sings in a nasal, unspectacular voice that is wholly original. He battles with the inevitability of Yuppie-hood, takes chemicals, and does his best to understand the world around him. This is not indie music. This is an independently produced masterpiece. Do what ever you can to hear this entire album. It won't change your life, that's what drugs are for (see Simple Kid song "Drugs"). But it is a fantastic album, one that is unmatched in the wide variety of influences that are so skillfully combined, into catchy, beautiful music. Hop on the bus, the Kid's holding.

I heard one of Simple Kids songs on satelite radio "Staring at The Sun" so I looked on ebay for the cd. Ended up getting this cd for 1 penny. Best freakin penny I ever spent. This should be up for best album of 2004. Fav tracks are "Staring at the Sun", "The Average Man", "The Commuter". But all the songs are great. If you are looking for something refreshing and original get this cd.

Simple Kid is amazing. His first album is the best debut album I have ever heard with such songs as Love's an Enigma, Staring at the Sun, Drugs, Supertramps and Superstars, and Breakups and Breakdowns. There isn't a bad song on the cd, though the mentioned are some of my favorite. If you like such artists as Beck and the band Wilco, then check it out, you won't regret it. Everything about the music is amazing. Even the lyrics are something to get excited over; SK has been called the modern day Bob Dylan. Buy this.

Don't Go Sellin' Your Soul.......2004-09-14

Simple Kid's "1" is too "risky" for the mainstream dreckheads that run modern, mainstream radio in America today.
That's exactly why you should buy it, listen to it, and love it. I have a feeling, however, that Simple Kid won't stay underground for too long. This self-produced CD contains some great music and a quirky style.

"Hello" "Truck On" "Staring At The Sun" and "No News" are really great songs. I cannot stop listening to this CD. There's something organic and electronic and retro about Simple Kid's style, lyrics and presentation that is extraordinarily captivating and alluring. Other tracks like "Drugs" and "Average Man" fill in the album nicely.

Buy this record. It's THAT Simple.

Director Spike Lee states, "When I listen to Aaron Copland's music, I hear America, and basketball is America." That may be far-fetched for those who saw Lee's film, especially when the only other music in the film was that of Public Enemy. On its own, though, this album is a welcome "greatest hits" collection of Copland's Americana. The CD and the movie start off with John Henry, a slow-building, beguiling melody that works effortlessly with Lee's montage of basketball images. More spirited numbers such as "Hoe-Down" from Rodeo and Fanfare for the Common Man are also featured on the soundtrack. Unlike many Copland compilation CDs, this collection features abridged selections, allowing for more variety of source material: symphonies, soundtracks from movies (Of Mice and Men, Our Town), and ballets. Maybe not the CD for the purist, but a welcome first album for those who were introduced to Copland's music by the film. At over 60 minutes, it's a worthwhile investment. --Doug Thomas

The Music of Aaron Copleand is timeless and purely Amerian. Thus, it is the best choice to be in a movie about basketball, one of America's favorite sports. This collection of Aaron Copland's music introduced me to this great composer and is a perfect start for new classical listeners. SUperb.

The musical selection of this CD is certainly what the cover says, however the cuts are very short. Typically 2 to 4 minutes in length. in my personal opinion I prefer a little more continuity of content.
