Customer Reviews:
Sensational, absolutely beautiful.......2005-07-05
I completely disagree with Emmanuel Chan. The Canadian Tenors version of Nella Fantasia is by far the better between Il Divo, and Amici Forever. Their harmonies are superb, their phrasing immaculate and the aaccompaniment is (thank God)a full orchestra versus Il Divo's synthetic monstrosity - probably the difference being that The Canadian Tenors have an artistic director who is classically trained as opposed to Simon Cowell who knows nothing about classical music. Listen to The Canadian Tenors for yourself - they will be heating up the airwaves soon - GUARANTEED!
Good debut CD.......2005-06-30
This CD is a good start for the three young men that comprise the Canadian tenors and they positively exhibit the talent that we have in this great nation of ours.
However, the CD does show much room for improvement for future CDs. In particular, this CD lacks the fine edges that characterize the songs of other classically trained musicians such as Il Divo. Areas such as breathing techniques and diction of foreign language lyrics can be improved to make a more refined product.
After listening to three versions of Nella Fantasia (Il Divo, Amici Forever, and Canadian Tenors), I would have to give the nod to Il Divo. While all three interpretations have their own unique spin on the song, Il Divo's rendition stands above the others in terms of the overall presentation and the details such as phrasing, expression, tonality, and diction.
Awesome!.......2005-06-28
This is such a wonderful album. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a great buy and a great musical experience! Fabulous!

Customer Reviews:
Great, full sound...........2006-03-29
This was my first introduction to the music of Giovanni Gabrieli, and I have always been quite pleased with this set of pieces. A previous reviewer remarked that this might as well have been written by Mahler or Brahms, but I think that there is great value in having multiple interpretations of the same pieces of music. Certainly I wouldn't expect these recordings to sound as they were originally meant to sound (firstly, because items like valved french horns, tubas, and trombones didn't exist in Gabrieli's day), but I have enjoyed their nice, full sound. This is firstly a "Canadian Brass" album, and second a collection of Gabrieli and his friends. I encourage this purchase, and expect any buyer would enjoy the same.
Music by Gustav Johannes Gabrielli.......2005-08-06
The technical playing and recording is OK. The interpretation is way off sounding as if no effort was spared to make this sound like it was written by a collaboration between Mahler, Wagner, and Brahms ... or something like that. The result is over-interpreted playing, often ponderous and lacking in snap and rhythmic drive. There are inappropriate ritardandos and attempts at lovely legato and sweet sections. The attempt to simulate the echo parts by having a subset of the group -- who are still in the same proximity to the microphones as everybody else -- play quietly doesn't work for me. Rather than an echo group who are still contributing to the rhythmic drive, it just sounds like a few guys playing quietly in such a way as to suck the life out of the piece. The 3-CD set of Gabrielli on Naxos is vastly superior.
