5 out of 5 stars THIS IS ONE OF THE KNACK'S VERY BEST COMPILATION ALBUMS EVER........2007-03-28

I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "PROOF: THE VERY BEST OF THE KNACK" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands ever. I give you THE KNACK. "PROOF: THE VERY BEST OF THE KNACK" was originally released in 1998 on Compact Disc on the capitol Records label in association with EMI Records. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE KNACK will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for playing 60's like Rock n' Roll music and for bringing back the true spirit of Rock n' Roll from the 60's. When lead vocalist and frontman Doug Fieger met up and joined forces with lead guitarist Berton Averre, the late great drummer Bruce Gary and bassist Prescott Niles, THE KNACK would be born and would never look back. Their own special blend of music style would only enhance the sound of the 60's and bring it all home like we were hearing again for the first time. THE KNACK would record and release many great albums and hit singles through the years from the 1979 to 1998 period to highly critical acclaim reviews. "PROOF: THE VERY BEST OF THE KNACK" is the result of all of the hit singles that THE KNACK recorded and released during the 1979 to 1998 period. In my opinion, "PROOF: THE VERY BEST OF THE KNACK" is a true testament of the sheer greatness and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals and a fine fitting tribute to a great band that may have been ahead of their time.

And now it is time to let THE KNACK'S 60's like Rock n' Roll music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This legendary compilation album begins with the forever KNACK trademark 60's like hard Rocker "My Sharona," the fast paced Rocker "Your Number Or Your Name," the beautiful and true spirited 60's like Rocker "That's What The Little Girls Do," the energetic and forever KNACK trademark Rocker "Good Girls Don't," the raw and nasty Rocker "Baby Talks Dirty," THE ROLLING STONES sounding slow smooth 60's like Rocker "Can't Put A Price On Love (Single Edit)," THE CARS sounding 60's like unbelievable Rocker "The Hard Way," the slow and beautiful 60's like acoustic mild Rocker "How Can Love Hurt So Much," the a*s kicking 60's like Rocker "Another Lousy Day In Paradise," the slow and extremely beautiful 60's like mellow Rocker "Pay The Devil (Ooo, Baby, Ooo)," the breathtaking 60's like Rocker "Just Wait And See," the blistering hard Rocker "Rocket O' Love," the slow and beautiful acoustic/electric Rocker "She Says," the groundbreaking 60's like Rocker that was used in the movie "THAT THING YOU DO" in 1988, "That Thing You Do," the in your face Rocker "Teacher Teacher" and the speedy killer 60's like Rocker "I Knew The Bride." May I also add that Doug Fieger's lead vocals hit their mark perfectly during the recording of all of these song tracks. Fieger's vocals were sizzlin' red hot and on fire resulting in taking the music to the next level. May I also add that guitarist Berton Averre's blistering guitar licks and riffs were also red hot and on fire. Averre's guitaring playing also contributed in taking the music to a different level.

Overall, this is one hell of a compilation album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a diehard KNACK fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the newcomers and new beginners of the sound and music of THE KNACK, I would definitely buy this album. However, there are many other KNACK compilation albums that you might want to research further into before you purchase the right compilation album for you. All of THE KNACK greatest hits compilation albums are available through amazon. Whichever KNACK compilation album you may buy, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT NOR WILL YOU BE SORRY YOU BOUGHT IT.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great KNACK compilation album that no music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, THE KNACK has continued to perform to sold-out audiences the world over with their 60's like true spirited Rock n' Roll sound up to 2006. However, THE KNACK would have their fair share of tragedies and bad tribulations to contend with. On 3 August 2006, KNACK lead vocalist and frontman Doug Fieger would undergo surgery in order to remove two brain tumors in his head. According to doctor's, the surgery was successful and Fieger made a full recovery only to mourn the worse tragedy of THE KNACK'S career. In the same month and year on 22 August 2006, KNACK'S drummer Bruce Gary would pass away at the age of 55. In late 2006 or early 2007, the remaining surviving members played a tribute concert in Gary's memory to sell-out audiences. As of now, no information is available at this time. THE KNACK has contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll that it is uncertain what the future holds for THE KNACK. THE KNACK has definitely left their mark in Rock n' Roll history not just for their music, but for bringing back the true spirit of what 60's music really sounded like. THE KNACK kind of made us all feel young once more and because of that, they will never be forgotten. So here's to you Doug, Berton, the late great Bruce and Prescott. Thanks for the great memories and for helping us find the fountain of youth one more time. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE KNACK RULES. BRUCE GARY LIVES. R.I.P. BRUCE GARY, Born 7 April 1951, Died 22 August 2006 at age 55. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

3 out of 5 stars Missing major songs.......2005-01-15

After The Knack released "Get the", they instantly became my favorite band. I still to this day enjoy listening to the entire album. Although I lost interest after thier 2nd album (mainly because of the introduction Harder/Glam Rock like Van Halen, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, etc) they still should have been supported better than they were. The reason I'm only giving "Best of" 3/5 stars is the lack of other songs off of "Get the" such as my favorite "She's so (Selfish)", "The Monkey and me", "Frustrated" and "Maybe Tonight". If you don't own any Knack, your better off buying "Get the" instead of "Best of". Don't agree? Read the other reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Power Pop Album.......2004-03-17

The Knack, The Romantics and Bazooka Jones all have a way of delivering a perfect three minute power pop gem. The Knack are the very best the genre has to offer and this album represents some of their best work. It takes me back in a good way, but still sounds as fresh as the day I heard it. Great song crafting and top-notch musicianship. Buy this record.

5 out of 5 stars Sunny late 70's power pop.......2001-03-12

This is truly one of the most excelent compilation of a sunny late '70s california power pop."the knack" who became famous all over in late june 1979 thanks to their all times greatest No'1 "My Sharona" and their less familiar but still a huge hit on it's on right-"Good girls don't",is truly a simple catchy fun.heard them first time on vacation on some FM radio station back in july 1979 while driving along the red sea in sinai.my feet just started hitting the car floor and soon i was dancing in the driver's seat, twisting and shouting "Hoooo you make my motor run ma ma ma my sharona".later on that same day i was lucky enough to hear one of their quiet pieces-"maybe tonight" which became one of my favorites ever since.people, for those of you who remembers and for those of you who likes the happy cheerful melodic of the 1970's rock, just go and "get the knack".

4 out of 5 stars Skinny-tie rock revisited.......1998-08-24

If you have fond memories of this band--or if "My Sharona" is simply a guilty pleasure--you'll probably enjoy this set. Includes "Sharona" and the group's other Top 40 singles, as well as mostly well-chosen album tracks (although their wonderful tribute to Phil Spector, "The Feeling I Get," was inexplicably left off). "Rocket O' Love," from their '91 album _Serious Fun_, is probably the most pleasant surprise for the new listener; the only dud is their horrid cover of "That Thing You Do."

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Album Description

How in the world did so much voice, so much talent, so much energy, and sensuality fit into one tiny albeit beautiful body? Answer. Cindy Alexander. Nominated for Best Female Artist and winner of "Outstanding Songwriter" by the Los Angeles Music Awards, Cindy writes songs that people sing along with, and lyrics that they quote to their friends. Cindy's critically acclaimed debut CD "See Red," nominated for L.A. Music Awards 1999 Indie Pop Album of the Year, has 11 tracks - an organic blend of folk, pop and rock with both electric and acoustic elements. "See Red" was produced by Dave Darling (Boxing Gandhis/ Meredith Brooks/ Brian Setzer). She gets compared to Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Alanis, and Tori Amos, but Cindy is still uniquely Cindy-esque. Her quirky lyrics, multi-faceted mega voice and amazing charisma have made her one of the most popular acts in Los Angeles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting voice, creative lyrics, great album.......2006-09-20

I own all of Cindy Alexander's cds and she is amazing! Her songs can make me laugh (Sick of myself) or cry (Time falling down), they evoke so much emotion. Suprising that such a powerful voice can come from such a petite person. This first album is definitely worth owning- a mixture of softer ballads and upbeat songs with unusual lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars See Red.......2005-09-18

A very good singer who writes creative lyrics. She seems to capture the thoughts and feelings that many of us have felt at one time or another.

5 out of 5 stars SMASH IS A MASTERPIECE.......2004-11-19

I don't know how Cindy was able to not name this CD MASTERPIECE. The first song on this cd sets the tone for the entire record. This is a masterpiece. I had only had See Red, was not even aware she had another one and found this when I was surfing the net, through one of those sites that say, "If you like this, check out...." up popped Smash, even more addictive than the first if that is possible. It's the kind of collection that makes you want to go in order each time you hear it and each time you hear new things about it you hadn't noticed before and fall in love with.

5 out of 5 stars Believe the hype!.......2004-09-09

Finally--I've found a kindred spirit! How is it possible that Cindy crawled inside my head, dug through all the cobwebs, swept off the dust, and found an actual name for my pseudo-manic depressive condition? I'm happy to report that this fabulous artist has done just that, AND she gave me a new theme song. That's a lot for one artist to do; she has to be exhausted! Overall, Cindy is a terrific singer/songwriter and vocalist. She has an amazingly versatile voice, and her witty lyrics astound me each time I pop SEE RED in my CD player. (In my mind, Cindy seems like a brilliant cross between humorist Dorothy Parker and Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls. She writes songs that are quirky, hysterical, intelligent, and, at the same time, edgy and poignant.) I ordered SEE RED from another venue (and I hang my head in shame every moment I think of it) a few weeks ago and, after listening to the songs, immediately ordered SMASH at CDBaby.com. I can't wait for SMASH to arrive because I'm on the verge of wearing my copy of SEE RED out! Cindy, you are fantabulous and splendiferous. Keep on rockin', indiegrrl!

5 out of 5 stars 3 Cheers for Pnut!.......2004-07-01

See Red is my favorite CD right now. Cindy Alexander is ten times more talented than the majority of the pop divas on the radio. I listen to every song on this CD rather than skipping a few like I do on most records. I highly recommend listening to this beautiful voice.

4 out of 5 stars All The Best From The Knack.......2005-09-22

I can remember the summer of 1979 when "My Sharona" was released. I was going in to my freshman year of high school, and I heard that song, along with "Good Girls Don't" playing on the radio all the time. Needless to say, I was glad to find a cd that contained both of these songs from my high school years, as well as some other pretty good songs as well.

The Knack gets most of their acclaim for their highly successful debut album, which included "Your Number or Your Name" and "(She's So) Selfish)", which are on this disc as well. But their second album, "But The Little Girls Understand" is good in its own right, and I was glad to see that "Baby Talks Dirty" from that album was included on this cd. There's some other songs on this disc that I've never heard before, such as "Africa" and "Don't Look Back", but they still have that distinctive Knack sound.

This is a very good cd. Their signature songs ("My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't") headline the list of songs, but the others are good as well. Pick up this great disc and hear the anthology of one of the early 80's first great rock and roll groups. (By the way, the Knack's lead singer really did date a girl named Sharona).

5 out of 5 stars More To Offer Than You Might Think.......2000-06-20

I bought this Cd for one reason, so I could listen to "My Sharona" whenever I wanted to. I listen to that song over and over and I never get tired of it. That's an accomplishment in itself when any band produce a track like that.

To be honest, I didn't know what else The Knack had done besides "My Sharona". If you were a teenager in the late seventies and early eighties, you will recognize some of the other tracks here. My favorites are "Good Girls Don't" and "Can't Put A Price On Love". But all the tracks are good. This CD is well the price, not only for "My Sharona" but to learn more about the band that produced it.

5 out of 5 stars Sorry you didn't get it...........1999-03-13

Sorry Peter, but you really didn't get it. I don't know what your personal tastes are, but The Knack is just fine for me. I'm 48, saw The Beatles in '65, and spent my high school years in the Summer of Love in San Francisco. I wish more artists today had an ounce of this band's energy, wit, talent, chutzpah, and just plain damn simple dedication to ROCK N' ROLL.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting retrospective.......2001-02-10

Made in USA in 1999, Serial# 72435-20581-2-9, Playing Time 35:18

This CD is part of EMI's "10 Best Series", which consists of putting what the record company deems to be the 10 best tracks from the artist.

This compilation features tracks up to their 3rd album, "Round Trip", plus 1 song (Don't Look Back) left in the vaults until the "Retrospective" album issued back in 1992.

THE KNACK, mostly known for "My Sharona", make basic but catchy music; I'd call it "Fun Rock": straight ahead, unpretentious melodies, that make you want to "get up and dance". The sad part is that the CD only lasts 35 minutes, their writing style consisting of 3-minute songs.

If you've got other retrospectives, you'll probably pass up on this; but if you don't, it's a good place to get exposed to their songwriting skills.

4 out of 5 stars Great place to visit..........2000-11-03

If you want to have one Knack collection and don't want to spend a lot, this is a very good retrospective. Of course, "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" are here, along with a few neglected classics ("You're Number or Your Name") and some harder to find songs such as the Springsteen penned "Don't Look Back". If you want just one album by this band, then it really should be "Get the Knack", but this is the best of the three or four career retrospectives.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the "Best of" Compilations.......2005-07-31

Of all the Knack "Best of" compilations CDs I happen to like this one best. I recommend it if you see it in the store or on-line.
The track sequencing is not chronological by the way.
"The Hard Way" is from "...but the little girls understand" and is also a cover; the original version being by The Kinks.

Here is the track listing (I don't see one from Amazon)
    01. My Sharona [Averre, Fieger] 4:53
    02. Your Number or Your Name [Averre, Fieger] 2:56
    03. One Day at a Time [Averre, Fieger] 4:23
    04. The Hard Way [Davies] 2:13
    05. Good Girls Don't [Fieger] 3:09
    06. (She's So) Selfish [Averre, Fieger] 4:30
    07. Just Wait and See [Averre, Fieger] 3:01
    08. Baby Talks Dirty [Averre, Fieger] 3:45
    09. We Are Waiting [Corey, Fieger] 4:23
    10. I Want Love [Averre, Fieger] 4:04
    11. Africa Averre, [Fieger] 4:33
    12. Can't Put a Price on Love [Averre, Fieger] 4:39
    13. Rocket O' Love [demo version] [Averre, Fieger] 3:09
    14. Another Lousy Day in Paradise [Averre, Fieger] 3:28
    15. Sweet Dreams [Fieger] 3:31
    16. Don't Look Back [#] [Springsteen] 2:21
    17. Pay the Devil (Ooo, Baby, Ooo) [Averre] 4:07

There is also a 1996 compilation, Very Best of The Knack that has 16 tracks, 4 of which are "new songs". The new tracks (2 are covers) sort of spoil the idea of a "Best of" compilation by taking up space for previous classic Knack songs.
"Retropective" is a CD which does what it was designed to do; i.e. give an overall perspective of the Knack's output up to 1991.

There is a demo version of 1991's "Rocket of Love" (from "Serious Fun" CD) and a Springstein cover we've never heard before. (the lone totally new song).

In my opinion this CD was wise to include "Africa" and "We Are Waiting" from the Knack's 3rd album "Round Trip". Both tracks are expressive and unusual Knack songs but also highlights from an overlooked great album.
Also from "Round Trip" is "Pay the Devil (Ooo, Baby, Ooo)". Thankfully, this is the last song on the comp and one of very very few Knack songs I just don't care for. Sadly, this was chosen as a single from "Round Trip" back in the day and I still think this song Killed The Knack.

"One Day at a Time" also appears here and it's from Serious Fun and was even redone on "Normal as The Next Guy" (2001). Truly a great love song.

The Knack's first and second albums are well represented:
"My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" & "Baby Talks Dirty", etc. etc.
Of course this lacks tracks from Zoom/Re-Zoom (which came later), but you should buy "Re-Zoom" separately anyway (HINT HINT!).
    It's that good.
