For 12 years the critically lauded and Guided by Voices-endorsed collective New Radiant Storm King have wrestled with the fringes of indie-rock fame. Core members Peyton Pinkerton and Matt Hunter have recorded with the Silver Jews, and Pinkerton plays guitar in the Pernice Brothers. Like the Pernice Brothers, Pinkerton and Hunter pen great songs, but their dense art pop is more tightly crafted and arranged. Listeners can simply absorb these sounds effortlessly as the music hypnotizes, or tune in intently while marveling at the songcraft. Either way, a sense of urgency permeates, especially on the punchy, soaring "Constellation Prize." Breeding atmospheric pop with traces of Mission of Burma, Chris Bell, and Elliott Smith,
Winter's Kill also recalls the '80s New Zealand scene spearheaded by the likes of the Clean and Bailter Space. While NRSK may jangle, they're never easy to untangle, so they satisfy the heart
and the head.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.
" one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

i wish i could give it a 4.5.......2004-08-04
one of the happiest surprises of the year for me. this is one of those bands i always want to love. and i do, for the most part; their high water mark, 1996's _hurricane necklace_, will always be one of my all-time favorite indie rock albums. unfortunately, their other releases have left me a little cold. until this one. they radically changed their sound--one of those rare instances of a band actually improving by making themselves more accessible--the band wheat did it as well last year--and the production is amazing.

Stunning.......2001-12-15
I own a maximum of ten albums which bring me back to an EXACT time and place. This is one of those albums. This album was like meeting the first guy who could stare STRAIGHT through me. But it is tragic and sad, rather than threatening. And absolutely beautiful.
Proving Winter Cruel is awesome.......1999-04-29
Kill Creek never disappoints. Maybe not as driving as "Valentine's," but equally if not better is "Proving." Scott tells you stories as the music bends and turns all around you. Scott and Ron's guitars blend together so well, it is hard tell where one begins and the other ends. All the while, Pat is holding the groove together with some excellent bass work. I give Kill Creek two thumbs way up. These guys rock like only some bands dream about.
stirring, sonic cathedral depicting anguish and transcendence.......1998-09-03
This album promised an awful lot, based on their previous releases, 'St Valentine's Garage' and 'Stretch' and the first instinct, the easiest, is to be let down upon first listening. But further attention and perseverence pay off, as you find yourself starting to come up with ways to convince your friends that this thing is really worth listening to! The album grabs you and punishes you as you sit there unable to halt your own free fall into the depths that this band leads you into. It's pretty much a sad album, filled with images of regret and sorrow, but all with the underlying hint that all is probably not lost. But still, you feel punished as you sit there in front of the stereo-a punishment you feel you deserve and a punishment administered by no one. This album feels like your own personal "sorrow-tron". Like Woody Allen's orgasmatron in 'Sleeper', the sloppily-constructed, sonic machine created by Kill Creek swallows you whole once you're willing, runs you through the wringer, squeezing out all your sad ya-ya's, then gingerly wipes the sweat from your brow and lays you gently back on the couch where you groan weakly, thinking about how silly you'd feel if you suddenly started crying. But, of course, there is no crying...just the sweet relief of knowing that you really could have, if you wanted to. Proving Winter Cruel is adult entertainment for those who are just beyond the grasp of youth and just short of anything resembling the stability and sanity of a grownup world. And it is at this point on the big timeline of life, where the comfort of things like Proving Winter Cruel, are most welcome and even maybe, just maybe, somehow helpful.
It rocks..........1998-06-30
I have listened to this album many times...and it is good.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Collection of Songs.......2006-08-20
I remember walking into a record shop when I was on vacation and buying my first Hendrix album, it was this one (Rare as Love not Bleeding Heart). This album begins with some excellent live guitar playing, with songs like "little wing" and "room full of mirrors" which far surpass the studio recorded versions in overall soul and sound. The ending 5 songs are all early rock style songs or blues, and finishes with "she's a fox" -- a song that will truly make you feel that you are alongside Hendrix cruising the streets of Seattle in the 1960's.
Rare as Love does not come close to the Woodstock collection, but if you would like to experience some rare and beautiful Hendrix music; this album should be added to your collection. I highly recommend this album to any guitar enthusiast, Hendrix fanatic, or just plain music lover. Really, who cares if this is not one of the original albums, it may be a cheesy looking album cover, but it is still hendrix behind the guitar.
Aliases of this album.......2006-08-07
I'm going out on a limb here, not having it myself, but it sounds like something released in late '78 or early '79 called High, Live, &Dirty--released by an entity called Nutmeg Records, with a bright purple cover and a glaring big "X" on the front to warn listeners of explicit content. On that album, Morrison does indeed utter little besides obscenities, and the phrase "F.H.I.T.A" sounds like it's dubbed in repeatedly; and one even hears Jimi telling him which microphone to sing into--Morrison's recollection of it all was no doubt quite hazy the next day!
But, Hendrix does some respectable guitar work, and it's remarkable in being a good example of Jimi at his most relaxed and informal, indulging his ultimate pleasure in life--tinkering around with some songs and entertaining a small audience in a cozy setting as he did so.
As far as I know, Johnny Winter was not present.
So, if "Bleeding Heart" is indeed the same material, I'd recommend it for the serious or semi-serious Hendrix devotee. Newcomers to Hendrix might do well to hear some of his more well-known material first.
HOW COULD U GO WRONG ?!.......2006-02-23
I DON'T HAVE THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, I HAVE ONE CALLED WAKE UP AND FIND YOURSELF DEAD. THE SAME SONGS ARE HERE AND TO ME THIS ROCKS, EVEN THOUGH JIMS TRASHED JIMI ALWAYS ROCKS WHEREEVER HE GOES. I'D GIVE IT 5 STARS BUT LIKE I SAID I DON'T HAVE THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM. ANYONE WHO THINKS THIS IS NOT A GOOD FIND REGARDLESS OF SOUND QUALITY JUST DOESN'T APPRECIATE RARE INSTANCES IN ROCK HISTORY
False advertising. Don't be fooled........2005-12-08
According to Johnny Winter he never actually appeared on this after hours session at Steve Pauls "Scene Club" in 1968.It's probably Jorma Kaukonen instead of him. Basically the session is based on one of those times in the 60s when someone left the tape machine running without the full knowledge of the artists, mind you, they were so stoned they wouldn't have cared anyway. "Bleeding Heart" is probably the 'best' track on here if i were to make a choice. It's taken at a funky pace.
This recording has been issued and re-issued under various guises and titles under Hendrixs's name both on vinyl and CD.("Woke up this morning and found myself dead" being the most famous) Even came out as a bootleg back in the 70s. The sound is of typical poor bootleg quality and the musicianship is well below par with screaming obscenities being hurled from Jim Morrisons corner that would make the likes of Marilyn Manson blush.(on "Uranus Blues") Well, what more do you expect with a title like that?? The whole session turned into something of a joke inspite of Jimi trying to inject some seriousness into it.Like the original LP i think the CD should carry an 'advisory" label because it's as obscene in places than the vilest rap record today.
Not for the faint hearted. If you are thinking of purchasing it because of Johnny Winter's presence then don't bother because although he did jam with Jimi on occasions Winter isn't present on this session and i think he's thankful that he wasn't.

IRON WHO????.......2006-01-17
O hell YES!!!!!!
I think this may be one of the best album's ever!!! OBSCURE MUSIC FOR SURE!!!!
MORE BASS than any stupid ''hip hop'' cd, and the singer is a NUT!!
Just you try and go to sleep if you never heard this band yet, MP3's CAN BE FOUND!!!
MORE MANDATORY THAN MANDATROY!!!!!
''YEAH..YEAH..YEAH..YEAH''
Friggin' classic and timeless.......2004-05-27
The release on CD really cleans up the tone as compared to the original vinyl LP release- Sullivan's bass growls with punch and authority and PK Ripper's guitar mastery is something from Marshall heaven. The Winter Kill remix is a true added bonus!
One of my all time favorite bands! J.B.
I remember when..........2001-10-27
I was in Chicago following this phenomenal band when they recorded and promoted Winter Kill back in 1985. The most unfortunate thing to ever happen was that this band and it's music was completely misunderstood, underappreciated, and so ahead of its time that no one "got" it until it was too late. Although the overall sound quality is sadly lacking (hey....it's the best an independent band could do at the time), the songwriting and performances are something other-wordly and brutally enticing. Key and tempo changes abound, shrieking, bizarrely dramatic vocals sear through thunderous gallops of King Diamond-style riffery, and the lyrical imagery is disturbing and grotesque to say the least. Everything that metal should be, and almost was, back in that glorious turning point in 1985. There are other releases and downloads available from this band, but the original lineup is long gone and probably to never return due to the rumored death of frontman John Stewart and a parade of subsequent drummers that never quite made a permanent home in the band. If you can get past the tenuous sound quality of the recording, this collection is a must-have.
Slauter Xstroyes review from Enlightened Chaos magazine.......2000-09-19
SLAUTER XSTROYES - "Winter Kill" CD This is the story - of a lovely lady - no!! This has nothing to do with The Brady Bunch, and not even anything to do with David Cassidy or The Partridge Family. What it does have to do with is one of the most rip-snorting albums that most poor unfortunates have never heard. To begin with, I've got to find out what kind of stuff Philly Baker and Denny Bergeron have been smoking and get me some quick. You see, first, 3 years ago, they turn me on to Winterhawk's "Revival" LP ('82 - see massive article in E.C. #18). Then, 2 months ago, they turn me onto Slauter Xstroyes' "Winter Kill" ('85). So what, you say? The "so what" is that these are two of the best albums I've ever heard in my pitiful existance and they are both infinitely rare, local Chicago-area releases. So what can I say, keep 'em coming guys, eh!? Pretty soon you'll own my whole all-time Top 10.
In any case, I'll get to the point of all this hoopla. SLAUTER XSTROYES was a 4-piece metal band and in 1985 they released an Lp that should've brought all self-respecting metal connoisseurs to their knees. The title cut, "Winter Kill," opens this record and by the time the listener has gone to retrieve their head from the other end of the room, they'll have realized that THIS IS SOME SERIOUS S*&%! Truthfully, the beginning of this song may be the most monumental exercise in blatant, heavy-as-s&%# Godliness that's ever been inscribed on vinyl. The guitar and bass interplay between Paul Kratky and Brent Sullivan is something to behold and John Stewart's vocals soar like Bruce Bruce and Ray Alder combined. Dave Bonow's drums are no slouch either. Side one continues with the majestic "No Idea," sporting a beautiful acoustic intro that leads into a chorus sure to give goose-bumps. Following is "The Stage," a great tune, filled to the brim with off-time riffing and heavyness. The side concludes with one more epic of spell-binding metal, the medieval-flavored "City of Sirtel." Through it all, echoes of Fate, Maiden, and Fates Warning, etc. can be heard, but the overriding mastery of SLAUTER XSTROYES is their ability to come up with the most massive riffs that are totally original.
Opening Side Two is "Charlotte," and before I hear any lip about a "similary titled Maiden song," let me clear up two points: first off, the songs are totally dissimilar and secondly, if Maiden's is "Charlotte The Harlot," SLAUTER XSTROYES' is "Charlotte the Motherf*&%ing Riff Whore From Hell!!!!" Seriously, the chorus here is ear-melting, and Paul Kratky's guitarwork makes a tuna fish sandwich out of Murray and Stratton (much as I love 'em). Kratky is a guitar wizard who has GOT to be heard and Sullivan can match him on bass. Up next is "Black Rose and Thorns," a monster epic and my favorite song on the Lp, along with "Winter Kill." Overflowing with acoustic sections, stratospheric vocals and ripping musicianship, it's in league with ditties like "Victim of Changes." Last but not least is a wonderful parting shot, the accusatory "Mother, Mother." No more needs to be said.
Can you believe you don't know about this Lp? It's crazy, isn't it!?!?! "Winter Kill" has been called "the greatest unknown pure metal LP ever released," and that may be an accurate statement. If not, it's surely among the top 2 or 3. - Ray Dorsey
Slauter Xstroyes review from Edge of Time magazine.......2000-09-19
SLAUTER XSTROYES Winterkill Monster Records The record label Monster Records once again makes a mark by releasing an old metal classic on CD for the first time. The vinyl version of "Winterkill" was originally released in a very limited quantity on vinyl back in 1985. Copies were mainly sold at live shows but somehow a few copies made it to the European mainland. The lack of publicity, off the wall band name and powerful music created a mysterious aura around Slauter Xstroyes. Now, almost fifteen years later, a CD version is available with an extra track (a remix of the title song). Although the heavy metal as performed by Slauter Xstroyes is over fifteen years old it doesn't sound outdated. In fact, this release breathes the atmosphere of heavy metal in the early and mid-80s just before glam rock appeared on the scene. Combining the European metal of the early 80s with the typical epic and power of US metal, the Slauter Xstroyes trademarks are definitely present: the powerful (with an evil grin) vocals of John Stewart, the riffing of Paul Kratky, the bass playing of Brent Sullivan (in the best Steve Harris tradition), and the competent drumming of Dave Bonow. Stand-out tracks are the uptempo "Winterkill," "The Stage" (dealing with the interesting concept of stage-fright), and the epic "City of Sirtel." A classic in all meanings of the word... (CR)
