3 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2007-03-24

So if you are a fan of The Specials, you will most likely already have the bulk of the tracks included here - many of the songs appear multiple times with little difference between the versions, and the bonus tracks do little to capture the "sound" of the Specials.
In addition, only the first disc really addresses the "Specials" - discs 2 and 3 are mostly devoted to the "Special AKA" - a BIG difference for some folks.
Don't get me wrong, it really is a good set, especially if you don't already own their original releases, but based on the way the record company is trying to steal your money on this set ($50.00 for 3 discs of old material???), it's probably better - and possibly cheaper - just to find the original releases.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Argue!.......2003-09-04

A superb compilation of the A & B sides from every single released by the Specials, STEREO-TYPICAL is a a great collection for anyone who loved the band, Ska, or the semi-underground club scene in which both flourished during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Beyond making black & white both a fashion statement and a social comment, Ska, much more than Punk, was able to crack radio playlists on both sides of the Atlantic, allowing in a breath of fresh air after years of increasingly stale corporate Rock and Pop. It seemed fresh and new, yet had its roots in R&B and traditional reggae. On the dance floor Ska was hip with roots, if you follow me.

The Specials were witty, fun, fashionable, bright, had a great horn section, brains and a social conscience. Within the genre they couldn't be touched, and they sound as great now as they did in their glory days.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection and More!.......2000-10-15

Whether you're new to Ska or a seasoned fan of the Specials, this 3 CD set will be a welcome addition to your CD collection. Unlike so many "out of the vaults" boxed sets we're seeing nowadays, these CDs are not full of stuff that would have been better left forgotten. This is the best and the rarest music from the most important Ska band since the birth of British Ska in 1977.

Although there is music here that some fans may have never heard, there is plenty of very famous Specials music for everyone to enjoy. In the past, you would have had to collect all the Specials regular releases and quite a few songs only available on vinyl or hard to find compliation discs to get all this music. This collection brings all of it together on 3 discs that won't leave your CD player for months.

5 out of 5 stars What memories!.......2007-01-18

Man the memories that this CD brings back! I was in college and. . . . well it was a better world then!

5 out of 5 stars Pure joy.......2006-07-22

I remember the CMT from the sixties and saw them several times. They were great musicians and topical singers; they also sang blues, traditional ballads, social ballads and just about everything. What harmony and Mitchell's voice was outstanding. Their little poems by Yip Harburg are gems and just as relevant today. "No matter how high or great the throne; what sits on it is the same as your own." Some of the material may be dated but on the whole this is a group to cherish and discover (or rediscover).

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential CMT.......2003-11-21

This double album CD has so much on it. I own almost all the Chad Mitchell Trio stuff and there are songs on here I never heard before - at least not for the last 35/40 years. It's easy to see why back in the 60s most radio stations wouldn't play their music. It was considered extremely controversial at the time. There is a lot of politics and social commentary in their work, but there is also a lot of fun and some really good singing. Right near the top of the CD each of the trio takes a solo turn and the songs they chose are perfect. Chad Mitchell sings with great humor about "Mandy" - a local businesswoman who won't give it away for free. Joe Frazier takes on an odd 1930's cabaret sounding tune called "Moon of Alabama". It's a very odd piece, but his voice is so beautiful when it soars out. Then Mike Kobluk takes on a little blues piece that is orchestrated very sparsely and his feel for blues comes through with great compassion.

Sometimes people forget the musicality of the CMT. They had a special sound that was copied by groups that ended up having bigger names. The CMT was the first group to record "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (however that is NOT on this CD). You can hear "You Were On My Mind" here though.

This was a trio with social conscience, talent, commitment to quality, and who took risks that ended up keeping them off the radio. If you are a fan of the genre, then this is a must have for you.

Mr. Ray doesn't mess around with warm, fuzzy renditions of classic kiddie tunes, even though the crowds he aims to please are still in the lower single-digit age bracket. Instead, as his black, sticker-emblazoned guitar and groovy Elvis Costello glasses hint, he's built a reputation on revving up the little ones with kicky, bounce-around pop/rock numbers, a 12-song clutch of which is represented on Start Dreaming. These tunes sail along, some unloading simple messages that any preschooler can relate to ("Boo-Boos Go Away," "When I Grow Up") and others dipping into more didactic, imagination-inflating waters ("Roy G. Biv," about a boy whose name is an acronym for the colors of the rainbow and "Why Are There So Many Questions," an invitation to stare down such head-scratchers as who thought it would be a good idea to put feet in shoes and how so many spots get on cows). All stand solidly on suck-you-in hooks and melodies--something not entirely surprising from a musician who's brought acclaim to his own grown-up bands, including Stone Pony and Blue Van Gogh, and toured with Meat Loaf and matchbox twenty. If that's not reason enough to take notice of Mr. Ray, his label might be: Start Dreaming is the first in a new family series from Sugar Beats Entertainment, home of irresistible kids' rock band, the Sugar Beats. This debut will keep musically with-it kids crossing their fingers that label head and Sugar Beats' creator Sherry Kondor, also daughter of Carole King, will start dreaming up her label's next pop pick-me-up pronto. --Tammy La Gorce

This is a wonderful cd for children. It teaches things while there singing . All Mr. Ray's cd's are GREAT. I would reccomend all of them especially the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Rockin' Kid's Music.......2004-04-08

Our six year old son loves "Start Dreaming" CD by Mr. Ray. This is kid's music that rocks. Mr. Ray has a hip sense of humor, and he is so much better than the sticky-sweet stuff you see on much of kid's television.

Mr. Ray had a new DVD, too called "The Mr. Ray Show!" The DVD, also available on Amazon, is great. Our son's favorite songs are "Kalien the Alien" and "I Want to be a Dinosaur."

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Ray is the BEST!!.......2002-12-30

My sister gave my daughter Mr. Ray's "Start Dreaming" CD as a gift and since then she's been singing his tunes all day long...upbeat and fun kid-and-parent-friendly songs that I've caught myself singing along too!!

To top it all off, we had the extreme pleasure of having Mr. Ray to our house for a birthday performance for my neice this past weekend and I have to say that he was incredible! He had all the children laughing and dancing and singing along with him....even the parents were bopping to the tunes! Mr. Ray is not only talented, but also a super-friendly guy. You couldn't ask for any more!!

My family can't wait for his next CD to be released. And we hope to see him in person again soon....THANK YOU MR. RAY!!

5 out of 5 stars Start Dreaming..........2002-12-04

...that children's music can be meaningful and enjoyable for adult's. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of music, and a former alernative radio DJ, the thought of listening to my 4-year-old daughter's music made me scream -- until we 'discovered' Mr. Ray. This is one of my favorite CDs. Well written, hip tunes make this the perfect holiday gift!!

5 out of 5 stars best kid's music ever!.......2002-08-06

Mr Ray's music is absolutely enchanting to kids and adults of all ages. Every song brings its own unique sound and spirit to the heart of the listener. The most frequently played CD in our house by both the kids and the parents. Mr. Ray is awesome! Can't wait for the next album. If you have the chance to have your children see Mr. Ray perform live, DON'T MISS IT! He is even more entertaining and endearing live.

Album Description

The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)

Album Description

Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's not stereo.......2005-01-10

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

5 out of 5 stars A Must. Audio Karate Rocks!.......2006-02-05

Audio Karate is one of the best bands out right now, and why everyone has yet to discover them is F****N amazing. All their songs are great. Once you start to listen to this albulm you won't be able to stop listening to it. Listen to Jesus is Alive and Well in Mexico, to rock out, and then listen to Maria to slow it, while still rocking, well stop ready and buy already, no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome album.......2005-10-17

This albums is awesome, all songs are great, not one song slows down the album. Space Camp was a great listen, but this album really shows how much they improved as artist. I seriously don't understand why the masses haven't found this gem. Particular favorites are Jesus is live and well in mexico, aim to please, hey Maria, but all songs are great. Go have a listen to Jesus is live and well in Mexico and then buy the album. Your money will be well spent.

5 out of 5 stars A great Follow up.......2004-07-29

I was very excited to hear that audio karate had a new release. Their previous album 'space camp' was an excellent mix of great guitar work and great emotion filled vocals which left other bands of its genre far behind. On the new record we find the same, if not more, creativity behind the guitar parts. And vocalist Art actually seems to scream a lot more on this album, yet the record sounds just as melodic as Space Camp. There is a slight change of style however, they took a step away from their pop punk intirior and replaced it with more emotionally charged breakdown parts. At first the record seems a little slower and is harder to get into then Space Camp was. But after 2 or 3 listens this record proves itself to be more inspiring and original then Space Camp.

5 out of 5 stars Audio K does it again, not suprisingly........2004-06-21

What can I say, as an Audio Karate fan? This is definitely a change from Space Camp. Their sound has evolved, not so much in the sense as matured, but it is something different. They still have the 'fuzzy' Stratocaster sound we all got used to, with some killer riffs and screaming vocals. But the stuff they've released is a little heavier, maybe making them more classifiable as hardcore punk, but it still holds true to their melodical roots.

::Joe DeWitt

5 out of 5 stars Audio Karate Is GOD.......2004-06-01

Audio Karate has done it once again, pulling off yet another great release. "Lady Melody" is a bit more 'harder' than Space Camp was, but trust me, it sounds so much better. All the songs are great and sound terrific, not one slummy boring song at all on this album. Every single track has it's own different kind of style, especially "Hey Maria" which is a beautifully done slow song. The lyrics are amazing too, Audio Karate really have matured a lot since their last album. This is a MUST HAVE for any music fan. Audio Karate seriously are the best at what they do, and they did a great follow-up to Space Camp, which in itself seemed almost impossible to achieve. The CD also includes 3 enhanced videos, which are the music video of "Jesus Is Alive and Well (And Living in Mexico)", the making of the album, and the music video to "Nintendo 89", which is found on their last release. BUY THIS, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! Also make sure to check out their website for more info at: www.audiokarate.com

5 out of 5 stars You only need to have ears in order to enjoy their work.......2006-05-15

There simply is no way to go wrong with Los Amigos Invisibles! This Venezuelan funky acid jazz ensemble delivers some of the most groovy and fun music you can run into these days. Granted it's in Spanish, you only need to have ears in order to enjoy their work.

With "A Typical & Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band", their debut album, they deliver 20 songs loaded with beats that remind of a blend between Santana and Steely Dan. Highlights of the album are: the opening track ("Dame Tu Color"), "Dime", "Nada que decir", "Vuelo Hasta Tus Pies" (along with "Guffi's Mix", which it blends with seamlessly) and the impossible-to-ignore "Boogaloo Pa' Los Panas" (which throws the album into a Salsa loop that is closer to Fania All Stars than anything else).

All through the album you can find bits and pieces that serve as a starting point for some of the Amigos' best known recordings, which would be found in following works after they were discovered by David Byrne who signed them to this label, Luaka Bop.

5 out of 5 stars Hitting a homerun on their first swing.......2005-11-22

This debut effort of Los Amigos is simply PHENOMENAL. Not only is it their first offering, it is their BEST. Previously available only in their native Venezuela, it is now available on LAI's own website (amigosinvisibles.com) and apparently via private dealers here on Amazon.

"A Typical" showcases what has made LAI truly a ear-pleaser today: an eclectic mix of rock, funk, jazz and Latin rhythms, and every song on this disc is thoroughly enjoyable. My favorites are "Encantame," "El Humo que Respiro," and "Vuelo Hasta tus Pies."

There's not *too* much of a difference between this the "slick polished" discs of their later efforts; indeed, the slightly "independent sound" of "A Typical" is what establishes this disc as the premier LAI album to date. The sooner Los Amigos re-release "A Typical" to the US at large, the better!

Product Description

In Times Like These contains more than 50 minutes of fully orchestrated instrumental selections. The album blends a 9 ft Steinway Grand with the uncommon rhythmic flow of 7/8 and 5/4 time signatures. These selections are accented by acoustic guitar, sectional violins, cellos, woodwinds and percussion.

5 out of 5 stars THE NEXT YANNI.......2005-12-22

Passionate, heartfelt attainment; this album captures soul and melodic theme and presents music like I have never heard. The album features solo piano and symphonic movements with time signatures that are rarely used in this type of music format. I do not think of new age music when I listen to his music, it's unlike anything I have ever heard.

Awesome music!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic live collection!.......2002-12-18

There are alot of ways to approach Peter Hammill's body of work. Described as doing for voice what Hendrix does for guitar is no small accolade. This collection of 'live' solo performances is a great selection in itself, but what really shines(imo) are the liner notes by PH describing the nuances of performing each set,how guitar or piano enchances each piece...and how as an artist he "becomes" his creation, riding the wave of emotions and energy inherent in each. These liner notes are excellent for the beginner as well as seasoned PH fan.Very cool.

4 out of 5 stars Very nifty and secret bonus tracks.......2000-09-01

If only all of the songs were as fascinating as "Traintime" and "The Future Now", then the album would be a 6-star record. But even in spite of some serious roughness in spots -- I mean more than one expects from Peter Hammill live -- the real surprise is the last song, which measures in at a whopping 26 minutes. Actually, it is four songs, though only one ("The FUture Now") is mentioned in the song list. Also included are "Afterwards", "Darkness" and "Central Hotel" -- encores with the tape player still running? Can't tell, but they're worth the silence in between songs.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely must for Hammill fans.......1999-12-12

Hammil solo with electric guitar and piano. A great selection os songs passionately performed by the master. Way better than Room temperature live. Highly recomended.

If you like instrumental guitar cd's, this has to be in your collection. Totaly original with many flavours. Stupendous virtuosity combined with a great musical ear creates some wonderful musik. He does not overplay and will not fill every space with a dozen notes. He can do warpspeed, but is way to subtle to get hung up on senseless noodling. There are no wasted or superfluous notes on this cd just some of the best musical moments your likely to hear on this or any other instrumental guitar cd.
Just buy it, your not going to be sorry.
