Album Description

A magical collection. The Scottish trio Pilot had their biggest hit in 1975 when their song "Magic" went all the way to #5 on the Pop charts. They followed it up with "Just a Smile" and "January" (all produced by Alan Parsons) and you can hear them at their most magical on this collection of their best.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Write Consistently Great Pop Music.......2006-06-20

Pop, as a genre, is widely derided by music purists, yet it is as difficult to do well as great jazz, classical, or other artistic composition. There are certain conventions and limitations, and to create great art within those limitations is difficult indeed. That's why, to me, the singular superiority of the Beatles in that regard cannot be overestimated.

I am a fan of well-constructed pop music. Pilot, working under the sure and steady hand of Alan Parsons at Abbey Road studios, delivered five or six examples of fantastic power pop, as clean, melodic, harmonic, and effortlessly joyful as any top-flight Beatles tune. And that's saying a lot.

Is it a crime to fail to deliver such excellence over 15 or so songs? I say not, not with such pop gems as "January," with its irrestible chorus and harmonies, the hit "Magic" of course, with echoes of Badfinger and early Paul solo songcraft, or "Just a Smile," a ringing piece of power pop candy. Throw in some respectable ballads, such as "Lovely Lady Smile," (which could have come off of Band on the Run), and the bouncy "Girl Next Door," and you have some satisfyingly top-notch power pop, in the latter Beatles, Badfinger, Ram-era Paul idiom. Parsons' production work and the Abbey Road sound certainly contributes to the overall quality of the results.

That Pilot could not sustain such brilliance over an entire album is understandable, and I say we should take what we can get. If you love strong power pop, with a bright and shiny sheen, you could do far worse than Pilot. Enjoyable from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars The Majick of PILOT...Own this disc!.......2005-01-23

The Beatles inspired so many great pop groups to form and carry on the McCartney-esqe vocal style and arrangement. PILOT flies over teenage bedrooms and sprays them with seventies pheromones. "Over The Moon" and "Lucky For Some" make today's version of power pop seem like a bad Steely Dan jam. In the end...I choose PILOT!

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful pop/rock recordings in the history........2003-11-26

At least one of the most beautiful pop/rock recordings. Finally I got this CD and am enjoying right now. Still I got a chill! Best $15 I spent on Ebay. Oh, I found the bonus tracks (total 5) are really cool too. If you encounter this CD somewhere, please check the back of jacket (or back of CD). Three happy guys are running, smiling. This is what exacly you will get from this wonderful musicians and their music.

Believe me and order a copy right now!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Pure pop for now people!.......2001-01-19

Before disco dominated the airwaves in the 1970's there was a brief window where power pop was God. Badfinger, the Raspberries, 10cc, Queen all provided a rich tapestry full of great guitar licks, hooks that wouldn't quit and great harmonies. Pilot despite their status as 1 hit wonders managed to hold their own with the aforementioned groups.

Their first and only major hit Magic echoes Badfinger's(who were in turn influenced by the Beatles)No Matter What with its tight construction and rich melody. The rest of this CD doesn't quite live up to that single but most of the material is still fairly strong. I've often thought of Pilot as Badfinger or 10cc light; their music lacked the wit and lyrical ambition of Badfinger and the sardonic humor of 10cc (that would be the Godley & Creme era 10cc). Regardless, they managed to put together a trio of albums full of rich melodic fluff. I'd describe Pilot as the Pooh Bear of pop music bands.

While the songs are fairly routine lyrically and about as deep as a cup of coffee, the melodies, harmonies and arrangements make this confection go down relatively smooth (provided you don't gag when you eat cotton candy).

Interestingly, Pilot's drummer Stuart Tosh toured with 10cc as a drummer (so that 10cc's drummer could focus on singing) and eventually joined the band when Lol Creme and Kevin Godley left 10cc. He plays drums on Deceptive Bends and a couple of other albums as well.

4 out of 5 stars If it's not Scottish it's ... well, you know........2000-06-05

There's definitely some Beatles coursing through the veins of Pilot, but the influence I recognized (and really enjoyed) was Queen. Check out the guitar licks in Magic. This is the kind of high-octane pop from the 70s that could only be the result of 3 boys from Scotland. (Especially endearing is when the brogue breaks through, like in Canada or Just a Smile.) If you want a CD that exists simply for the purpose of making you feel good, this is the one. If you are a product of the 70s (the NINETEEN 70s) like me, then this CD will feel like an old Scottish friend who sings charming pop songs to you. Oh Oh Oh, It's Magic.

While not world music per se, Globe Trekker, the soundtrack to the TV series of the same name, is definitely global in its outlook. Ambient composer-producers like Ian Richie (Laurie Anderson) and Nina Miles (Lenny Kravitz) are among those who create lush soundscapes that feature ethnic samples. Ritchie's "Old Man of Crete," for example, uses a traditional folk song by an island native as a springboard to a rich Mediterranean-flavored piece, while Daniel Pemberton builds a sample from Rio's Carnivale into an uplifting dance track. In some ways it seems as though the entire world is here--from the American South ("Don Strings") to Thailand ("Lahu"), Canada ("Smithsonian"), and Madagascar ("Valiha")--all filtered through an electronic prism. At times it can seem a little comfortable. But this is music made for the show, and in that light it does push the envelope a bit while keeping a strong, graceful integrity. --Chris Nickson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very unique!.......2006-02-12

My favorite song on this album was 'karkee' which was #9! I first heard it on tv, they were playing it on the music channels. I thought that it had the most unique sound to it so I decided to check the soundtrack out. The rest of the songs were pretty good too! Overall I would recommend this soundtrack to people who like Moby and the Chemical Brothers.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but ..........2004-01-25

it's NOT the same as the original soundtrack. For those who've bemoaned the missing track, it's at Globe Trekker: Original Journeys, the CD with the orange cover.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent despite the obvious lack.......2003-11-26

I'm of the opinion that this disc missing the show's main title is a rather minor point. The sometimes funky, sometimes inspiring music brings back the atmosphere and antics of some of the show's hosts. It was hard for me not to think of wacky Ian Wright as I listened to some tracks. On other tracks, I could envision the shows they came from and the lands visited.
This disc is NOT a stinker and I think is worth every penny of what I spent for it.
I do find it hard that Vol. 2 is not available on Amazon.com. Oversight? I might have to go to the www.glodetrekkertv.com site to buy it. As for now, the other selection Amazon has will see me buying a copy.

1 out of 5 stars THE MAIN THEME IS MISSING!!!!!!!!!.......2003-08-27

What is wrong with these imbeciles? The best piece of music on this show, the main theme, IS NOT HERE!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars If you love the music on the show..........2003-05-17

I watch the show every week, and simply love the music. I am, too, disappointed that the main theme isn't on the soundtrack; yet, I still love this soundtrack. It's funny to watch the series and actually hear some of the songs on the soundtrack, as well. Every song is unique and have the tendency to flow smoothly. It's a great soundtrack to cruise on long trips with, clean with, have as background mood music, or just to listen to anytime. I do admit it took me a while to actually love the soundtrack as much as I do, but all in all it's a great find.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-04-06

If you like Vertical Horizon, Breaking Benjamin, Audio Slave, Hoobastank, you might like these guys. IMHO best song on the CD is 'Into Your Hideout'. I think they're a newer band in the states; if they keep at it, in a few years they're going to be awesome. For a few dollars, the cd is worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Great U.S. Release.......2007-03-27

Before Into the West, Pilot Speed (formerly known as Pilate) released two albums in Canada. This release has all the songs from the second album MINUS one song PLUS two of the best songs from the first album. I think this is the perfect release. Not only is Pilot Speed music now available in the U.S. (and at a super low price), but you get the best songs, in my opinion.

I only cared for a few of the songs from the first album, and most of those made it onto Into the West. Nearly all of the songs from the second made it and the one that didn't is not a big loss.

Do yourself a favor and give this underrated Canadian band a chance. You won't regret it.

For the record: my favorite Pilot Speed song is Alright (which is on Into the West as well as the first album).

3 out of 5 stars makes me rather sad.......2007-03-04

I don't know how many people know this, but Pilot Speed was formerly known as Pilate. They had to change their name in order to sell/play their music in the US. This disc is a crude compilation put out by their record company, combining their work from two separate albums, "Caught by the Window" and "Sell Control for Life's Speed", which were originally released in Canada under Pilate. Living in Detroit, it makes it easy for me to hear up and coming Canadian bands. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone, but what I totally disapprove of is the way they went about releasing it. Majority of the album are made up of tracks from "Sell Control for Life's Speed", missing major tracks from "Caught in the Window", such as Endgame, Mercy, Melt Into the Walls, and Collide. If you like this disc, check out their other two albums. I'm sure you'll have to pay an Import rate on the disc if you don't have access to Canada, but it will be well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Surprising Alt Rock Gem.......2007-02-07

This disc was a complete leap of faith for me after reading reviews here and elsewhere and I'm glad I took the leap afterall. They sound a lot like the band Matthew, but this is a good thing. I gave it only 4 stars and not 5 because I don't feel that it is a classic by any means, but nonetheless, it is highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bringing 90's Altrock back to America.......2007-01-22

I heard "Barely Listening" a few weeks ago on XMU, XM's College Rock station, and as I heard this I thought to myself what ever happened to edgy late 90's alternative bands like Unwritten Law? Nowadays grundge bands or semi goth-grundge bands are being shunned away by regular radio stations to make way for mediocre bands like Reliant K. Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, and My Chemical Romance seem to be the only three that are trying to keep the semi deflated ball rolling. Hopefully with the Canadians introducing bands like Pilot Speed(orignially called Pilate)the ball will be full of air once more. Their sound, while it is not original is rich, melodic, and full of intense, pulsating energy. Plus, P.S. is an amazing live band. They recently opened for The Dears, another fantastic band from Canada. Oh and yes, if Pliot Speed got into a fight with Dishwalla, the Speed would have them "Chasing Blue Cars".

4 out of 5 stars City Boy anthology.......2006-12-01

A great underated band, this selection could have been better, but as a taster its ok. It does give a new listener an idea of how good they were.

2 out of 5 stars different strokes for different folks.......2006-09-04

There is (generally) a reason why bands do not get famous... they were simply not that good to begin with!

I saw City Boy warm up for UFO, it was not a good pairing. I did not care for them and teh UFO crowd did not give them a warm welcome.

5-7-0-5 did get a decent amount of airplay (at least where I grew up in Chicago) in the 1970's. The song was okay.

I bought this purely for the nostalgic aspect of being able to hear a song from my youth. I do not care for the other songs.

If City Boy was a favorite of yours then you were definelty in the minority. During their heyday, I did not see a lot of black rock concert t-shirts with "City Boy" on them!

5 out of 5 stars Los grandes desconocidos de los 70's.......2003-11-15

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS!!!.......2003-02-16

This is possibly the WORST compilation I have ever purchased. As a long time City Boy fan I am disgusted by the exclusions of such classics as "Mr. Shoes", "Summer in the Schoolyard", "Moving in Circles", "Machines", "Cigarrettes", "Mama's Boy", "The Man Who Ate His Car" just to name a few!!!!! The liner notes are completely wrong from the albums the songs came from to the personell on each album. I wonder if the band even knows about this release. The cover isn't even new. It's the "Young Men Gone west" artwork. Don't waste your money on this poor excuse for a City Boy "Anthology".....you can't call this poor representation of one of the greatest bands to come out of the '70's an anthology. Call it a ripoff!!!

4 out of 5 stars They Got Style!.......2003-01-07

One of the greatest under-appreciated Pop/Rock acts in history, City Boy first caught my attention circa 1977 with "She's Got Style" -- a "lost classic" if there ever was such a thing -- off the "Young Men Gone West" LP. Their sole U.K. Top 10 single hit "5.7.0.5." and its parent album "Book Early" ('78) were also worn out by the time I got through with them, while their later work ("The Day the Earth..." + "Heads Are Rolling") never found much favour with me due to me being otherwise occupied at the time (Punk/New Wave).

Recently, however, I had the opportunity to check all of CB's recorded work out more thoroughly and was pleasantly surprised by how well it has held up compared to much of the more generally celebrated popular music from that late '70s/early '80s era; solid musicianship, some of the tightest harmonies you're ever likely to hear, very well written songs + nearly always, ummm, "interesting" lyrics a la early Sparks -- these, duly, were CB's main strengths.

Musically, and for those who like to do that, it's tough to categorize this band. But for better or for worse, I would say at several different times they sound a little like such overall unsimilar acts as Queen, 10cc, around '80-era Rollers and the aforementioned mid-'70s Sparks -- which should say something about their overall diversity. Their first two LP's are a tad too "proggy" for my taste, but nearly always (again) "interesting" nonetheless.

Which brings us to this "Best Of" anthology-type-of-thing here. Although, as ALWAYS in such cases, I miss more than a couple of old faves ("Mr.Shoes", "Summer in the Schoolyard", Goodbye Lorelei"), it is indeed an exceptionally well compiled collection. But the biggest beef -- and that is also exactly what keeps this one from getting my full, flawless, 5 star rating -- is the sloppy packaging, the clumsy spelling mistakes and the highly inaccurate sleevenotes ("The Day The Earth Caught Fire" a U.K. Top 10 hit?! I don't think so). And althought the overall sound and (re?)mastering is good, it quite frankly escapes me why the the ending of "Mr.Shoes" -- which, lest we forget, is omitted from this collection -- is included as the beginning of "Heads Are Rolling", the next track behind it on the "H.A.R" album!! Evidently -- and in spite of managing to make this much-needed compilation sound good -- the people behind it weren't able enough to make it also sound RIGHT.

But for some people these may be just minor flaws and the main issue here is to finally have a (mostly) fine representation of City Boy available on CD. And for that we should just be grateful. As good place as any to start your exploration of this great, yet mostly unknown, band. Enjoy!

Album Description

Globe Trekker, the most-watched travel show in the world, follows travelers into some of the most remote, exciting places in the world, leading viewers off the tourist track.

Globe Trekker's composers bring a wealth of experience that goes well beyond the norms of television music. Ian Ritchie produced Roger Waters and Laurie Anderson. Stephen Luscombe was a member of '80s chart stars Blancmange before teaming up with the former Osibisa percussionist Pandit Gabriel. Nainita Desai collaborated with Peter Gabriel and Bernardo Bertolucci, while Malcolm Laws directed the English Chamber Orchestra and recorded sessions with many artists. Nina Miles has worked with Lenny Kravitz and Jonathan Miles with Eurythmics. Finally, former Decca-signed guitarist Michael Conn and multi-instrumentalist Colin Winston-Fletcher come from a more classical background.

        4 out of 5 stars Taylor's Still Got It.......2005-04-15

Mick was sitting in with another band when this was recorded, and there's some good stuff. Some different versions of songs like "Sweet Home Chicago," but it's when Mick hits the stage that things really heat up.

"I Wonder Why" has been in Mick's repertoire and live shows for years, and he smokes yet again on this and some other cuts.

There's another CD of European live dates that's even better.

5 out of 5 stars Unassuming master of the six-string.......2004-10-08

This collection manages to give the listener
a glimmer of Taylor's grounding in gritty,
fundamental blues-rock, especially his work on
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking"--from the studio version of
"Sticky Fingers"-- which he played as a member of the Stones in the 70s.
        This former Bluesbreakers(John Mayall)guitarist
can play every note under the sun, overlooked perhaps,
but quietly demonstrating technical skill comparable
to the likes of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck.
Crystalline, clean bluesy chords and melodies are
interwoven in this work. If you dig fusion, classic rock,
and the kind of blues Elmore James, Willie Dixon,
and Jimmy Reed played, taste this.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars it's the music.......2005-12-22

I had been leary of getting this CD only for the fact that I thought the sound quality would suck---it doesn't. But what it does do is pay tribute to one of the most underated guitarists/producer/arranger in my rock realm. This CD is fantastic on a number of levels. Sure Bowie is missing from this (on tour perhaps but a slight nonetheless), but the other musicians make up for it.

CD1 is the weak part--I'll be honest. That's why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. Some great artists--Gary Brooker, Mick Jones, Bill Wyman, Steve Harley and Dana Gillespie (the years have not been kind to her --sorry) but the music just doesn't fit with what I thought the show could've been.

CD2, though, is worth the price of admission! The Spiders From Mars segment is the best of the bunch (except for Ian--more later).
Who knew that Bill Nelson from Be-Bop Deluxe was a fan?!?! They motor through Width, Ziggy, Moonage, White Light, Suffragette, and a great Angel #9. Find Pure Praire League's second album that has Amie on it and you'll find Angel #9 and Mick Ronson all over the LP.
Ian is also one of my musical heroes, and he doesn't fail. A live version of Resurrection Mary (only on the Artful Dodger CD--out of print) is a great treat. Michael Picasso WILL bring you to tears or close to it. It's the same version as on Ian's double best-of CD except for the intro which is priceless and so moving--talking to 'Mick's Mum' in the audience. Dudes ends it (fittingly) in a Mott style free for all. The back photo says it all-- Ian, his daughter Traci, Joe Elliott, Maggie Ronson and her daughter Lisa and bunch of others.
        Should Bowie have been there---yes
Is the Cd any worse without him--no

        Buy it!

        5 out of 5 stars A Very Fond Tribute!.......2002-12-12

I FINALLY found this CD after trying to get it for nearly 2 years, and it was WELL worth the wait! This is a very fond and heartfelt tribute to a man so revered for his immense musical talents, but in some strange way, still didn't get ALL of the respect that he was so deserving of! The biggest letdown of this tremendous album is the conspicuous absence of David Bowie; I feel his not appearing on this album a show of GREAT disrespect! What was Bowie doing then that was SO important that he couldn't afford the time to pay tribute to the man that he owes his entire CAREER to? How sad that is!

Well, no matter...the treasure trove of talent that DID appear on this album MORE than makes up for Bowie's absence; everyone from Joe Elliott and Phil Collen of Def Leppard, Roger Daltrey of The Who, Roger Taylor of Queen, and Ian Hunter from Mott The Hoople and the Ronson/Hunter projects of the 1970's. Also appearing were the original Spiders From Mars (Mick "Woody" Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder) in a reunion set, as well as a brief appearance by another of my guitar heroes, Bill Nelson! Everyone involved turned in great performances, especially Ian Hunter, who contributed the lovingly personal song "Michael Picasso" to Ronson's memory; I'm sure there wasn't a dry eye in the entire theater that night!

Some of the "surprise" appearances on the album come from ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman (performing with his side project, Willy & The Poor Boys), Mick Jones and Big Audio Dynamite, and also Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel, turning in a wonderfully rousing version of his classic "Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile)". Wrapping things up on this generous 3-CD set is the tour-de-force finale "All The Young Dudes", played by all of the contributing musicians; a very fitting show closer!

As tribute concerts go, this along with the Freddie Mercury tribute held the year before (which turned out to be Mick Ronson's final appearance) are the cream of the crop; they don't get any better than this! "Memorial Concert" is a limited edition of 5,000 copies and will more than likely go out of print again like the original 1997 issue. For old and new fans of Mick Ronson, this is a MUST HAVE; you'll enjoy it immensely, and it's a great way to remember a wonderful man and musician!

3 out of 5 stars Rest In Peace, Mick.......2001-09-29

Well...I suppose this could have been worse, what with the inclusion of "performances" by The Rats, Glen (ex-Sex Pistol) Matlock, Mick Jones & BAD, & Steve Harley, whoever he is. But then, wait...Mick Ronson did so much for SO many people, whether production or performance...and they're all represented here, too. (Thank God Johnny C Mellonbrain wasn't represented). There's Gray Brooker doing a quiet, acoustic piano version of his own/Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale," which segues into Bill Wyman's post-Stones Willie & The Poor Boys, "Mystery Train," the very same song Elvis did 40 years earlier. There's Roger Taylor doing Queen's "It's A Kind Of Magic," (which HE wrote, but his vocals are nowhere in the same league as - duh - Freddie's), and then a performance by the Spiders From Mars, the group that, with Mick, was David Bowie's band during his Ziggy days - although it's kind of an insult to drag out Def Leppard's singer & "lead" guitarist to fill in for Mick & Dave. And what show either by or about Mick Ronson would be complete without Ian Hunter? Ian does a creditible version of "Once Bitten," but his tribute to Mick, "Michael Picasso" WILL bring tears to the eyes of even the most jaded listener. Then Roger Daltrey (!) performs "Baba O'Riley,"& "Summertime Blues." And, of course, the show's "grand finale" is yet another version of "All The Young Dudes." There's also a CD-ROM showing Tayor's "Magic" and, of course, "Dudes." All in all - still: a great tribute to a GREAT Man. RIP, Mick.
