It's OK..........2006-02-09

I can see that Frank Zappa would have been inspired by this music. As a longtime Zappa fan, I can hear plenty in Zappa's music that was modeled after Varese. Still, Varese's pieces on this CD are hardly monumental or awe-inspiring, and this seems to be the kind of music that very much depends on how it's played and interpreted. You don't get much better than Pierre Boulez; if it was, for example, me conducting an ensemble in performing Varese's work, nobody would listen. So it seems that it's not as much the music as the performance. And that Varese cannot be credited with.

definitely NOT Louie Louie.......2005-09-11

This album (CD) made it into my collection the same way as a few others who've commented here. One day after listening to Lumpy Gravy I was at the record store holding this CD in my mitts wondering if I really wanted to subject myself to one of Zappa's major musical influences.

This is music either for someone who knows a lot about the structure of sound and can appreciate it for that reason or someone who gets bored listening to the same sort of thing all the time and enjoys variety. This is not what most people would consider the easiest "stuff" to listen to. It has an overall disonance to it that many would consider an assault on their senses. At the same time it also has a mathamatical structure to it that makes it obvious to even the most musically uneducated dullard that this is unique, well thought out sound. To be honest I'd have to admit to not understanding much of this CD but it certainly is interesting and different. Arcana, for instance, reminds me a little of something Gustov Holst might have written if he had been spending time with Carlos Castenada. The entire CD takes the listener through a range of emotions that might go from sombre and desolate to momentarily uplifted likely ending up somewhere between confused and perhaps violated... maybe even satisfied.

This is NOT the sort of thing I could listen to all the time but when the mood strikes there isn't a rendition of Louie Louie that is going to hit the spot that this will. Recommended for someone with a musically adventurous disposition.

Incredible........2004-05-26

This is one of the finest set of recording of the Varese repetoire ever made. The french performances are particularly well done with right degree of ensemble and tone required of this difficult music.

The Octandre is especially good with super attacks from all players...not for the faint of heart.

absolute craziness!.......2002-04-06

I purchased this cd after reading Frank Zappa's audobiography, where he pays homage to the great Varese for inspiring him. I can see where Varese had an influence on him. This is a strange but good collection of pieces conducted by Boulez, who also worked with Zappa on "Perfect Stranger". If you like Zappa then you will probably appreciate this album. Varese was a very talented composer and this album proves it. Ionization alone proves it, but the rest of the disc is great also.

impeccable chaos.......2002-03-02

This disc doesn't contain all of Varese's music, but it comes close at 77 minutes. Varese was not nearly as prolific as he was creative! The first recorded Varese I heard was on the VoxBox (called "Ionisation"), and five of the pieces found here are also on that disk, conducted by Cerha. What a contrast! Cerha presents Varese delicately, transparently, without passion. The advantage is that the instruments are clearly delineated. But you are left wondering what the fuss is about -- it doesn't sound very radical. Boulez emphatically captures the chaos, the energy, the alien-ness of Varese! Of course the overall impact is heightened by the inclusion of "Ameriques" and "Arcana," two 20-minute pieces for full orchestra that are bigger and louder than anything included on the VoxBox. The production value is superb -- sharp and clear -- and the packaging is faultless as well. In short, if you only had one recording by Varese, this would be an excellent choice. If you like this, by all means look for Xenakis' "Orchestral Works and Chamber Music" on Col Legno. Varese is a key influence, especially the composition "Arcana"!

A very enjoyable CD.......2007-02-21

This CD was a blind purchase for me. I was at an independent record shop that specializes in psychedelic and garage music. I asked the clerk for a suggestion, since I really do not know much about this musical genre. I had been listening to a lot of Electric Prunes and Rocky Erickson lately, and wanted something similar. The clerk recommended this CD to me, telling me it was "very popular".

It is a very good CD. Not what I was looking for, but I enjoy it. Rather than the groups I mentioned, this seems a little closer to the Strawberry Alarmclock brand of psychedelic or the Scott Walker type of dark pop songs. Almost every track clocks in at under three minutes, but the songs flow well into each other. The songs have a cool and steady drum beat with an acoustic guitar backing up the rhythm. The bass lines are melodic, yet ominous. The vocals are drifting and haunting. The warm fuzz of an electric guitar comes in and breaks things up at the tail end of the songs.

I think this is definitely a good purchase for those, like me, who are just beginning to dig under the surface of the 60's and early 70's. There are so many interesting bands out there other than the Beatles and all the "Woodstock bands" we all know about. It's too bad that the drummer says in his review below that the band won't see any royalties from this release. Still, as a music fan, it's nice to know that someone is willing to keep music like this in print.

My Old Band.......2006-08-30

Why would I give this flashback from the 60's such a high rating? Because I was the drummer! I found the album released by Shadoks while searching my old band's name on the internet. I was surprised to hear that tapes of our group somehow circulated in Europe for a number of years before Shadoks got hold of them. No one in the band is getting any royalties, but it was nice to see the work we did with producer Bob Keane (Ritchie Valens, Bobby Fuller Four,etc.)finding an audience after 38 years!

The album is quite good, the musicians talented, but I have heard the same music on other CD's played a bit better. However I love any civil war music and will listen to this CD many times

The Best.......2003-02-22

This is probably the best and most authentic renditions of music from the era of the Civil War that you will ever hear. Forget the country music versions, if you want to hear the songs the way they would have sounded this is it. I cannot say enough about this album. For the true belivers.

Moving traditional music.......2004-02-05

Music of the period performed in the style of the period and with great feeling. Don't be afraid that the music is "stuffy" or academic. It is funny, sad, and rousing. It gives the feeling of immediacy that never goes out of style.

A splendid program of varied, contrasting pieces for voice and
instruments. All performers are complete masters of this music
and its idiomatic performance style, and they execute it with skill, wit and (where appropriate) real depth of feeling.

This is an album which everyone who loves Civil War music,

Attention Hardcore Reenactors.......2000-09-14

I am a campaign-style Union reenactor in the Eastern US who has emphasized Civil War-era music in my knowledge base. I was also a musician for several years. DC Hall's New Concert ensemble has done a first-rate job of recreating our Northern ancestors' music. From my reading, their efforts have approximated the small, live music groups that were popular before and during the War. The liner notes are well-written, and historically accurate. Perfect for background music when having your pards over to count threads or make up rounds. I recommend it without hesitation.

D.C. Hall's NC&QB is a wonderful small ensemble that really adds new light to the Civil War genre. At times, it is so tender in feeling (The Picture on the Wall)and then rowdy in spirit (The Year of Jubilo). The familiar Star Spangled Banner is done in a wonderful unique rythme. Get this recording!

A song poet at his best!.......2004-12-03

I always have been a follower of the recordings of songwriters by themselves. Being a loyal fan of the work of the late Mickey Newbury for more than two decades I have to state that Hal, too, put out another masterpiece with his new CD-album which you can’t compare with the ones by Mickey Newbury, because it stands for itself!! Hal Bynum has his own style which comes to light with his recitations with lyrical depths. Being a well known collector of the recordings by the late Johnny Cash Hal's recitation of "The Ballad of Johnny Cash" with its true background hit a note deep in my heart and moved me that strong that it brought tears to my eyes - and I'm not ashamed of that. Oh, yes, by the way, there is something where you can compare Hal Bynum’s recordings with the ones of Mickey Newbury’s: in my opinion both artists are the only ones in Country Music who can/could record with a full symphonic orchestra still retaining their identities. Or isn’t it Country Music anymore? Well, a music that grabs your heart must be Country Music; and that’s exactly what Hal Bynum offers. Listen to “You”, “Exodus 1946”, or the classic rerecording of Johnny Cash’s “Papa Was a Good Man” (chart position #16 in 1971) done by Leona Williams together with her son and Hal. Music to relax, music to enjoy, music to think about! Hal Bynum, a song poet at his best!

Eliott Murphy is a genius !!!.......1999-08-27

As an American Overseas, I had to move to Germany to find out what a great artist Eliott Murphy is, This brillant album with its clever intelligent texts shows just a little side of the gem known as Elliott. At every concert he never failed to greet us personally, and at one concert sang for us just alone at an almost cancelled gig. He even put us on the VIP list of a Garland Jeffries concert where he was playing so we could see him. I recommend strongly any LP or CD of Elliotts especially "Party girls and broken poets" He worked with Bruce Springsteen on his album "Selling the Gold" and I hope that Elliotts work won't go unnoticed in the end !! My personal favorite on Beauregard is "O Wyoming" because I am from there. at any rate, any song is a 100% garantee for pure enjoyment !

Sheer poetry, no better singer/songwriter CD can be found!.......1999-08-02

Wow! Beauregard is the ultimate singer/songwriter CD. The lyrics, off course included, are just amazing, and Elliott sings in a style that you;ll never forget. If you're a little short on cash, don't buy this CD, for it's 100% sure you'll want to have the other 15 Elliott Murphy albums as well. And guess what? They are just as great. Buy it, and you'll know what I mean.

Another Elliott Murphy masterpiece!.......1999-01-24

Elliott Murphy is probably the best kept secret in the music business today. His music is haunting his words are wonderful. There are three outstanding songs ST ELMO'S HOTEL, ALL THESE DAYS and SMALL ROOM on the album which are worth the price of the CD. Combine David Bowie, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, and Neil Young and roll them around in Gilbert Becaud, Seamus Heaney and you have a poet/musician who continues to bring his keen observations to his audience. Run out and buy it.
