5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    1 out of 5 stars POP GARBAGE.......2006-05-28

Something that someone who claims to be COUNTRY should NOT do. Even though these girls are already pop, remixing it to make it even more pop was a HUGE mistake! Then again, they have to do something to sell more cd's! LOL!!!

4 out of 5 stars country spiced with pop and circumstance.......2006-03-11

If you like your country spiced with pop and circumstance, then you will love these remixes even more than the girls' orignals. You might also like another infectious country-pop act, Imaginary Friends, whose album, "What IF" is spritely, yet intimate with percolating beats and two female lead singers, who give the Shedaisy gang a run for their money!

5 out of 5 stars SHeDAISY flat out ROCK- their music prooves it!!.......2006-02-09

This CD is another great CD by SHeDAISY, the remix versions are just great. I listend to the regular album at wal mart and decided not to get it, but I really liked it too!!! And the girls look great on the front cover, Kassidy, the lead singer, should wear her hair straight more often.
My fav song on this CD is flat out "A Night To Remember" on the original CD, I thoght it was a bit too peppy for a song like that, but the remix version is mournful and sad, and it sends a chill up your spine, my other fav songs on this cd are...
    Little Goodbyes
    I will... But
    Before me and You
Lucky 4 You (Tonight, I'm just me)
    Still Holding out for you

This CD has got to be one of my all time FAVORITE CDs!! SheDaisy is one of my favorite country artists, and definitely one of my favorite trios! Actually, they ARE my favorite trio! This CD is so awesome, the best songs are 'I Will...But', 'Before me and you', and 'Dancin' with Angels'. The others are also wonderful! The sound effects and the new rhythms are amazing!! I HIGHLY recommend this CD for anyone who likes modern country or pop country. It's the BEST!!

5 out of 5 stars This Cd is HOT!!!!.......2005-09-02

SHeDAISY rocks on this CD... not only is it my favorite SHeDAISY album, but one of my all time favorite albums by any artist... yes it is that good!
How unique to remix a whole album! and what a job they did it is outstanding... "LITTLE GOOD BYES" is similar to the original with a more driving sound... you'll like this version a lot! "I WILL...BUT" is outstanding soooooo much better than the hit version, the song starts off with the girls amazing vocals with no music then builds up and explodes into a hard rocking version of the song... so HOT!!!!!! "THIS WOMAN NEEDS" is also similar to the hit single release, but the girls have turned it into a Power Ballad making it much stronger than the original. "BEFORE ME AND YOU" Rocks from the get go... I didn't think you could improve the original, but man you can this song is one of the finest rockers on the CD. "LUCKY 4 YOU (TONIGHT I'M JUST ME)" is another song that rocks and and once again is so much better than the hit version. "STILL HOLDING OUT FOR YOU" is very similar to the hit version. "PUNISHMENT" is a complete opposite of what you might expect on this album, where the original version is much more pop sounding, here they've turned this song into a very country almost hoedown sounding song very different than anything else on the album...but... just as addictive as the rest of the album. I like it just as much as the original but for all different reasons. "CAUSE I LIKE IT THAT WAY" totally rocks (but not in a hard rock way) and once again will blow you away with the outstanding production and vocals once again are just as good or better than the original. The only song I feel that falls short from the original version is "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER" on this song they slow it down, and with a dominate piano, which is fine... but the original is just much better with that awesome country/pop sound from SHeDAISY, I wish the original version was on the album. "WITHOUT YOUR LOVE" has a really neat haunting sound that you'll love, this song and "THIS WOMAN NEEDS" stand out as the best ballads from this album. And finally they saved the best song for last "DANCING WITH ANGELs". This song soars it is simply perfect! Man... it sounds awesome... put it in and crank it up... it'll blow you away... amazing vocals and amzing music and production. You can tell from the first note that this song is something special... building up... then building up some more... and before you know it you're on the musical magical journey, that you hope never ends... even at over 5 min long this still flies by so fast. I understand that SHeDAISY took a lot of heat for this album, but I LOVE IT! I love the fact that SHeDAISY isn't afraid to push the boundries a little that they don't fall in the cookie cutter mold of Nashville... and to think that this album has a country underlining and comes off so cutting edge... so awesomely cool... If you want a AWESOMELY HOT CUTTING EDGE ALBUM THAT ROCKS... You want this album... you won't be dissapointed. IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL! Thanks SHeDAISY!

4 out of 5 stars Great dance mixes without losing the original song!.......2005-10-25

At the time this release came out "remixing" still meant "mixing something over" rather than "overhauling" it, however this album came out at a time when the art of remixing was beginning to mutate into overhauling. Such complete "overhauling" of a song's music tracks, once a very rare occurence was beginning to become less rare at leaps and bounds. Such songs to receive a complete overhauling were Natalie Cole's cover of Bruce Springsteen's Pink Cadillac which was remixed by Robert Clivilles and David Cole; and Pseudo Echo's Lipps Inc. cover, Funky Town.

Now for Alexander's All Mixed Up. For the most part, many of the songs are "Spiced Up" but still the original song is mostly intact, with the exception of the Ben Liebrand remix of Criticize. Now some mixes are labeled as House but I have to disagree. At the time of this album's release, House music was very heavy in the R&B feel with thick rolling basslines and Bluesy piano riffs, and thick percussion, not merely the standard 4/4 beat.

Here is a song by song commentary:

    1 - Fake 88 (House Mix)
I would not consider this a "House" mix but rather a dance or club mix. Though it has a 4/4 beat and a thumping bassline - that was reminiscent of Nia Peeble's song Trouble - it did not have blusey piano that was so or the thick percussion. A lot of the original funk sound is still present in this mix and I like the restructuring, not to long of an intro and a simple but very fun breakdown in the middle.

2 - (What Can I Say) To Make You Love Me (Hateful Club Remix)
This mix finds this song getting something like what I would call a Hi-NRG mix, with it's synth bassline. Again, a lot of the original elements are still there but this mix sports the 4/4 beat and a smooth percussive flow. Again, nothing redundant about the intro or the breakdown in the middle.

3 - Never Knew Love Like This (Extended Version)
This song is very reminiscent of the S.O.S Band's later material. The S.O.S. Band's song called The Finest definitely comes to mind when I hear this. As for the remix factor, this is an extended version of the original with no additional production. However, there was a 12" release for this song and it had a different mix that had a different bassline.

4 - Criticize (Ben Liebrand Remix)
Now THIS can be called a House Mix as Ben Liebrand followed the House mix formula to it's fullest. This song is Bass heavy, with it's bass drum dominated percussion and the trademark rolling bassline and semi-bluesy piano rifts. Now another element of early House music was a vocal sample, or several vocal samples, peppered throughout the mix. The vocal samples did not have to relate to the lyrical content of the song, it was just for effect. What Liebrand does here is use the vocal track of a nitty, nasally sounding woman's critical remarks such as "her dress is as tacky as your suit" or "Alex baby wait for me" throughout the mix giving it a little humor. However, this mix is a perfect of an early house-style mix. As for my liking, I actually like the original 12" remix better.

5 - The Lovers (Extended Version)
Another S.O.S. Band type song in extended form perhaps with some extra sounds.

    6 - Criticize ( Remix)
This version is the 12" remix that came out originally. This is an extended remix with perhaps a little additional production but, for the most part it is the Hearsay LP version in extended form. Nice intro and middle interludes, no complete breakdowns are in this mix. I love the jazzy little part in this song somewhere past the middle point. It sort of reminds me of the video remix of Janet Jackson's Contorl where there was a jam section in the middle. This is the version of choice for my tastes.

7 - What Can I Say To Make You Love Me (Ben Liebrand Remix)
For this mix, Ben Lieband choses to follow the original LP version with minimal additional production. He adds a horn to his mix to give it a little jazzy feel. He also adds some vocal samples such as a woman's "I Love You" and also GQ's Disco Nights "Rock Freak". When this song first comes on, it sounds like Fake with an almost identical percussion.

    8 - Fake (Extended Version)
This is the original 12" version of this song in extended form. There is no extra production. I like the "House" mix better.

9 - You Were Meant To Be My Lady (88 Keith Cohen Extended Remix).
I was never familiar with this song so I don't know how much altering occured. This song is R&B/Funk.

10 - Innocent (Keith Cohen House Mix)
Again, I don't agree with this being a House mix. This reminds me more of Morris Day & The Time crossed with Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On." It has a 4/4 beat but no rolling bassline, no piano riffs, no thick percussion. Nonetheless, it is a fitting dance remix that works well with the song's rock and funk elements.

All in all, I enjoy this album event though I do hear a three songs twice, however, their variations make them as if I am listening to two different songs. What is great about this is that the Artist's and Producer's work is not completely lost in the translation as is the case nowadays. I actually liked remixing from yesteryear for this reason, however, I do not totally write off remixes of today, as sometimes a song sounds great in a different genre that I may have never though it would.

    5 out of 5 stars He's all good.......2004-01-15

Alexander O'Neal is so good. He's got the voice, he's got the songs, he's got the beats. He gives you all in all in good music. Here you have his biggest hits remixed by great producers like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and the remixes are not repetetive or boring at all. Very good and dancey new ways to known songs like Fake & Criticize.

    4 out of 5 stars Remixes of O'Neal's mid-80's hits.......2003-12-26

Alexander O'Neal should've ascended to the heights of Luther, Peabo, and Freddie. Possessing a much better voice than others that ruled the charts in the 80's, O'Neal did score with some solo tracks as well as duets with Cherrelle. Their pairing is represented here with an extended version of the hit "Never New Love Like This".

This compilation is basically an extension of "Hearsay", the singer's second album. The remixes, done by such stalwart mixers as Jellybean Johnson, Ben Liebrand, Keith Cohen, and Louis Silas, Jr., offer great production and slamming bass lines, reminiscent of the times.

The practice of remix albums was in its infancy at the time of this album's release; this certainly stands as a worthwhile "experiment".

    5 out of 5 stars Still awesome.......2007-01-02

I got this back when it first came out but I only had it on cassette and haven't listened to it in years. I ordered the CD through Amazon and it's still as awesome now as it was then. This is exactly what dance/techno music should aspire to sound like. Great stuff.

    Okay,
Superstar DJ Keoki may seem a bit pompous in proclaiming himself a techno-god. All you need to do is listen to one of his many works and you'll be telling your friends the same thing.
His mixes are unbelievable, mind blowing, and will tranceport you on a new musical plateau.
Enough big words. Buy this disc, it's among his best. One listen and you'll want more

5 out of 5 stars Trancy is good.......2000-08-02

5 out of 5 stars We miss you Melanie Thornton!!.......2007-04-30

Of course I must say this is one of my very favorite album of LaBouche. I want to tell you Melanie just 1 thing that may God be with you and we all fans miss you and for Lane you stay stong!!

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Remix Album........2003-04-06

I was extremely sad when I found out that Melanie Thornton passed away, but this CD just uses her voice even more and keeps the hits coming. My favorites are Be My Lover (Club Mix), Forget Me Nots (Club Mix)-this was actually the first time I had heard any of this song because it is not available on the US version of Sweet Dreams-, I Love To Love (Club Mix), Le Click: Tonight Is The Night (Dance Mix), and the Megamix. The other remaining remixes are fine, too, but these five just stood out more. If I could add two more things, though, they would be The Club Mix of Sweet Dreams and a remix of Where Do You Go, because that is also an excellent song. But overall, this CD should keep you jammin' all night! So enjoy some music from the days when it was exciting, new, and actually GOOD! Rest in peace, Melanie.

5 out of 5 stars BEST MUSIC EVER.......2002-12-23

I was shocked when La Bouche's lead singer died last year, Be My Lover and Sweet Dreams was their best songs in the 90's. I can dance to their music, their songs are good for partys.

    5 out of 5 stars PURE PERFECTION.......2002-06-25

'La Bouche' made their mark in eurodance history with their floor filling club hit 'Be My Lover', followed by the equally unforgettable 'Sweet Dreams'.

I bought this album because I wanted the club mix of 'Be My Lover' plus the remixes of 'I Love To Love' & 'Tonight Is The Night', which in my opinion is one of the finest eurodance tracks ever recorded. This song is the reason CD players have a 'repeat' function!! It contains the superlative vocals of Melanie Thornton, accompanied by a contageous beat & sprinkled with light rap.

I like the megamix, too, but I don't like the R&B style tunes or mixes of their 'first album' songs, mainly because i think any song under around 135bpm just isn't La Bouche.

    LONG LIVE LA BOUCHE!

5 out of 5 stars If only all remixes could be this good!!!!.......2002-02-18

While much of the music world mourned the untimely death in 2001 of singer/actress Aaliyah, hers was not the only voice lost in an ill-fated plane trip. Melanie Thornton, one half of the recording duo known as LaBouche, was also killed late in the year while en route to Zurich.

She and partner Lane McCrary soared to the top of the pop/dance charts in the mid-90's with a slew of hits. These are remixed here, retaining the powerful vocals and rap while offering slammin' rhythmic arrangements that launch the tunes into another realm of the musical stratosphere.

What better way to remember our loss than to party and recall the good times had as we danced the night away to La Bouche!!!

"Forget Me Nots"? I think not.

This is really a weak cd. Starts off with ADIDAS radio mix, but it isn't even a mix, it's an edited version. Good God, Dub Pistols remix sucks, it's 7 minutes, with boring repetative vocals, and screaming noises. The Got the Life mix is the reason this album gets the extra star, easily the best track on here. Twistchi is boring, and Jingle Balls is really kinda disturbing.
Also i really don't think this cd earned it's explicit rating. Only one song is explicit (DPR)

If you like rock or metal and even those who must call themselves emo you will like this album. Track two contains the best drum solo I've ever heard with vocals that come in around half way through the song. There is a siren that sounds in the background and even a few guitar parts. My system responds excellently to this track. Twist is always a classic Korn song though it was not on their first album, then Life Is Peachy sort of came out better in a different sort of way in comparison with the original Untitled album. Jingle Balls goes great with Christmas time and gets attention from everyone good or bad if you play it loud enough. You can't go wrong with this album, All Mixed Up, it really doesn't cost much either so I say buy it now hurry up go get your credit card.

    2 out of 5 stars A great bargain...here's why.......2005-05-02

I bought this EP by accident. I was in a Hot Topic store to blow what was left of my wallet on a few T-shirts (One of which happened to be a Korn shirt) and a CD. I didn't have enough for Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" but this one caught my eye so I bought it since it was in my price range of ten dollars.

I took it home, slipped my Korn shirt on and played it all the way through on my little CD player. Yuck. The collective tracks you will hear are mostly re-mixes, with the exception of a live performance (Twist/Chi) and an unreleased track (The painfully bad Jingle Balls, but they were obviously joking around so they deserve the benefit of the doubt). First there's the radio edit of "A.D.I.D.A.S", and if you own "Life Is Peachy" already, you're going to start questioning the value of this EP and what better use those ten dollars could have made.

The re-mix of "Good God" is completely unrecognizable and the "Got the Life" re-mix happens to be the only track worth listening to along with the live Twist/Chi performance.

You should probably save your money unless you have a lot to spend and/or want your curiosity to guide you. I wouldn't even recommend this to a die-hard Korn fan.

    3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2004-12-27

Whether or not you need Korn's "All Mixed Up" release really depends on how much you follow the band. If you collect their imports and various other releases, and plan to continue, you will most likely scoop up all the material on here elsewhere. However, if you are a Korn fan on a budget, and aren't interested in tracking down all of their minor releases, "All Mixed Up" is a worthwhile purchase. Originally released as a bonus disc for Korn's 1999 album "Issues" is Australia, "All Mixed Up" is a four song collection consisting of three remixes, one live performance and one unreleased studio track. The radio remix of "A.D.I.D.A.S." starts it off. We've all heard this version, it's the same as in the music video (and if you actually have a station that plays it, you heard it on the radio). It's a pretty useless addition. The Dub Pistols remix of "Good God" is definitely not up to par. There are probably more remixes for "Good God" than any other Korn song, and most of them are better than this. The Josh Abraham remix of "Got The Life," however, is probably the best I've heard of the song and is pretty hard to find (appearing only on the out of print "Falling Away From Me (2)" import single). The live performance of "Twist/Chi" is taken from the "Family Values '98" CD and chances are you already own that disc, but it is still a great performance. Finally, the last song, "Jingle Balls," Korn's second Christmas song, actually sounds nothing like Korn. Very interesting to hear, and it is probably worth buying this EP alone for. So there you have it. As I stated before, this release isn't really neccessary for completists, as you can find all this stuff anywhere else, but if you don't plan on scouting out all things Korn, this is a good, wallet-friendly place to stop.

2 out of 5 stars Awful. Buy if you like disappointment........2005-10-27

I'm a huge 311 fan, bought this to complete the collection and support the cause. Worst CD ever, all it does is provide the motivation you need to crank the original albums. It's a shame because if it were done right, it probably could have been pretty good, instead you'll feel like a retard playing it. You can't even fall asleep to it because you'll be too annoyed and aggravated.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-10-20

This is some of the best music out there! Big 311 fan, but its hard to fall asleep or study to regular 311 ... This cd has brought the best outta 311 and made it into an amazing orchestral piece that is very relaxing and just amazing to listen to. Would deffiently reccomend for anyone! I would love for the artist to come out with another 311 cover cd, I would DEFFIENTLY BUY IT!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2004-07-05

I read the reviews on this site before buying the album, and after listening to it I couldn't help but smile. I was so wrapped up in the music, you really realize how many layers of instruments go into the songs that you may not hear on 311's albums, and that's really cool. There's no way anyone could say 311's music is linear or repetitive, and this album really shows that. It's a great album, especially for the 311 fan, because it is simply amazing hearing 311's songs done only with strings. If you get a chance, do buy this album. I did, and don't regret it a bit.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty cool, but rushed.......2004-06-13

I'm the more hardcore 311 fan you can find in a 50 mile radius. And i very much enjoy listening to this album... but I feel that they did not spend enough time on production. The instruments are played alright, but you will find numerous mistakes and awkward tempo paces at times. They also messed up the timing on parts of "seems uncertain" big time. I still listen to this album all the time and am happy to have it in the collection, but they could have done ALOT better. Ive listened to these guy's tributes to other bands, and the production seems A LOT better. Oh well. If you're a hardcore 311 fan DEF. add this to the collection, its not total crap. If you're just a casual music listener, don't get this album, get the real 311 albums first.
