    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The highest quality performance.......1999-03-13

The music on this recording presents a typical example of a semi-opera, popular in Britain in Purcell's time. Semi-operas were based on a dramatic spoken play, and were accompanied by "incidental" music (dances and masques). It is this incidental music that usually finds its way onto a disc. This recording follows this convention. What distinguishes this recording is its high quality. Collegium Musicum 90 and Richard Hickox are experts in baroque music. The soloists include the biggest names in English vocals. Even the two additional tenors, brought in to merely double the voices in two places, are not just anybody, but Mark Padmore and Ian Bostridge (!). That tells you something. The biggest highlights include the Wood-god duet in Act V of Dioclesian, and the soprano song "Since from my dear Astrea's sight" which is placed in an appendix because musicologists don't seem to know where exactly it originally belonged. This song, which seems to speak of a man's, rather than woman's, anguish over the lost love, concludes with the most wrenching words: "alas, with weeping eyes, And bleeding heart I lie Thinking on her whose absence 'tis That makes me wish to die." Isn't that beautiful?

Purcell fans will delight in this collection of 30 of his 85 secular songs. Barbara Bonney, singing with ease and controlled fervor, steals the recording with her endearing sound and impeccable musicianship. Soprano Susan Gritton brings a more dramatic perspective, singing with zest and a little edge that almost, but never quite, grates. Sometimes, however, she vibrates mildly out of control. Tenors Charles Daniels and Roger Covey-Crump sing with grace, joviality, and tenderness, but both are a little shallow throughout the bottom. Countertenor James Bowman occasionally stumbles with intonation, but always lands standing upright. This buffet of various voices captivates the listener's attention span, totally avoiding potential monotony. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Purcell stole my heart.......2001-02-08

Alas, with the help of phenomenally expressive singers on this CD, Purcell has stolen my heart. I listened to this CD a few times then immediately emptied my pocketbook to the nearest consort putting on a Purcell concert. Such poverty is love.

I bought this over the weekend and all I can say is that it is a GREAT album!! The songs, the melodies, the music, the playing...it's all spot on. Wonderful pop music and rock!! You can NOT go wrong with Buzzed Meg. Well worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Project from former Smithereens Guitarist.......2006-06-14

I have been a fan of the Smithereens for years, and ordered this album immediately from Jim Babjak's site after I saw the Smithereens live in 2004. Every side/solo project that the Smithereens has spun off has been as good, if not better than The Smithereens, and this is no exception. Jim has some melodies and rhythms that may sound familiar, but also adds enough new spice and zip that just creates a great rocking/bluesy/poppy/catchy album that has songs that stick in you head. A must buy for any smithereens fan, or anyone who like good music. This disc has been spun many times in my player, and is one that frequently travels with me, cause I just hate to be without it.

          5 out of 5 stars Hook, line & sinker..........2002-01-26

Can't get enough of this band! Supreme talent through out. I've also seen them live, and would strongly suggest that anyone who has heard the cd go out and catch them in person! "You're So Cool" is killer hot and "Pretty Dream" is one of those songs that once you hear it, never leaves your head. It's a good thing! Buzzed Meg is Babjak's coolest project yet...can't wait for Volumes II & III!!!

5 out of 5 stars Buzzed on Buzzed Meg!.......2002-01-24

Saw these guys live in New York and they completely rocked my world!!! The band all around is exceptional and it's clear Babjak was the hidden talent in the Smithereens. There are some real gems here and I would strongly recommend this disc to fans of the Flaming Groovies and the like and yes, even the Smithereens.

          5 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2005-02-15

Josef Krips is my favorite conductor of all time, especially of Mozart. I had never heard him conduct Verdi, and even though he would have been of an advanced age in 1971 (the year of this recording), I bought it anyway.

This is good collection of highlights: it is over 70 minutes long and includes pretty much every major aria and ensemble in the opera. The conducting of Krips is, as I expected, logical and elegant in his Viennese fashion. As another reviewer has noted, there are a few beats where the singers and orchestra aren't in the same groove - but it's a live performance, and the performers are on their toes and are back together in no time. These mistakes are merely ripples and no energy is lost.

Nicolai Gedda annd Ileana Cotrubas (who is to me the most splendid of all Violettas), are no-brainers. They sparkle together in as Alfredo and Violetta should, and sink together properly later on as well.

The recording quality is merely decent; but for a budget label, such is hardly unexpected. Get this if you like Krips, or great conducting in general, and certainly if you enjoyed Cotrubas in the Kleiber set.

5 out of 5 stars $5 for these wonderful Traviata highlights is a steal........2000-12-07

Both Ileana Cotrubas and Nicolai Gedda are in fine voice for this 1971 live performance from the Vienna Staatsoper. Cotrubas, in particular, was in the early spring of her career and had just signed a three year contract with the house. All the promise of a magnificent career can be heard in her already maturing artistry and dramatic emphasis, and that, combined with the youthful bloom and beauty of her lovely, evenly placed soprano, makes this a thrilling operatic introduction. We get a generous hour and a quarter of music and the particular joy of hearing Cornell Macneil's authentic Verdian baritone in it's prime. Josef Krips conducts with rather too much enthusiasm at times, and leaves his tenor, soprano and chorus behind for a moment or two in Act 1. It's interesting to hear them musically bumping into each other and the overall musical and dramatic effect is not badly spoiled. The recording quality is surprisingly, very good. This is a must buy, especially at the excellent price.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.
