Shining brightly.......2001-10-21

John's post Blake Babies work (with Antenna and on the prior 'solo' album) made for good, likable music --- but in Vestavia he finds a complete voice. Excellent album, sadly overlooked by everyone bar Entertainment Weekly(!). Not folk, not rock, not pop - but somewhere between all three and all the better for it.

Why only four stars? Well, he's going to do even better next time.

Album O' the Year.......1999-02-04

As it was said so many years ago: Here it is only February, and we already have the album of the year. Layer upon layer of beautiful melodies and crunching guitar make this the summit of John's illustrious career. My favourite? Drive Thru.
