The original Will the Circle Be Unbroken is undoubtedly a landmark country-music recording. A peace offering between rock-reared longhairs and rock-ribbed Nashville patriarchs (and one matriarch, Mother Maybelle Carter), it exposed generations of upstart pickers and singers to old-time country music and its impact is felt to this day. The organizers of the 1971 sessions that led to the initial three-LP set, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, have produced two sequels, the first in 1989 and the most recent in 2002. This six-disc collection (including an all-star concert DVD) pulls together all three Circle sessions and, naturally, captures dozens of essential performances, plus a fair number of inessentials. Anyone with an interest in country music will want the original. Its mission is clear, the performances are inspired, and its significance is undeniable. The second Circle strays far afield from the original concept, bringing in the rather lightweight likes of John Denver and Michael Martin Murphy to mix with volume one holdovers Jimmy Martin and Earl Scruggs. The final volume is also more diffuse than one would like, though eminent guest stars such as Del McCoury, June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash help it capture the spirit of the original more frequently than does its immediate predecessor. Completists will relish having all three collections in one box, while those who think three times around the circle is two too many are advised to stick with the 30th anniversary reissue of the initial album. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

American Bluegrass Music - Yesterday and Today.......2005-01-27
No other collection of country music brings together "founders and originators" such as Mother Maybelle Carter, and the Carter Family, with their musical "children", Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson, and the third generation...Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Allison Krauss, Tony Rice, Dwight Yoakum...some of the greatest talents of three generations and six decades of American music.
Each generation of singers and musicians remain faithful to the "roots" of this music, playing with acoustic guitars, banjos and fiddles. The mood is that of a group of talented friends, sitting in the living room, and singing and playing the songs they love the best. The feeling and heart in these performances can be felt, as well as heard.
The sound quality is exceptional. It is easy to forget these are recordings...it feels as if the musicians are sitting right next to you while they joke, chat, sing and play these songs.
This is too much music to digest in a single sitting. Instead, it is more enjoyable to select just one CD, savor it for a day or two, and then move on to another. I have no doubt that people will be listening to, and loving, this music a century from now. This will be one of the living treasures of American culture for generations to come.
It is amazing that a seven hour collection of some of the greatest music of our time is available for less than $50...less than $7 for each incredible hour of music. At this bargain price, even folks who own one or two of the previous sets included in "Trilogy" ought to buy this collection...and perhaps buy another for their children or a good friend.
5 stars are not enough.......2003-12-16

4-4-5.......2006-06-11
THE OMEN: Oscar winning, Ave Santani is the biggy (if shorty.) The rest gets old quickly and the chanting fits better in context of the film, a drawback with a lot of soundtrack releases.
DAMIEN: OMEN 2: I've always wanted to get my hands on the main theme of this, with it's frog chorus backing (at least that's what I always called it. Don't go near the pond!) The rest as above works better watching the film.
THE FINAL CONFLICT: Considering the brief, the composer may be forgiven for writing a sweeping, biblical score more fitting to an old sword and sandals epic rather than the dour and cheap knock-off in which it appeared so incongruous. Although it unbalanced the movie, it stands out the best as a stand-alone piece and is arguably the masterpiece of the three. A portentous classic.
A really nice Cd to scare the American Idol fools........2005-10-21
I have a story to tell you.
I invited American Idol singers Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia Barino over to my house for dinner. Needless to say, I didn't like them at all. I asked them what music they'd like to listen to, and Kelly Clarkson said, "Breakaway," and Fantasia said, "Free Yourself." I said,"Alright, here we go." We were all in agreement, and so I went to play the Cd of their choice. However, I came up with a really, really nasty plan. I wasn't going to fall for them one single bit! So, I planned to do my own desires. As a result, I got this box set, and I decided which of the Cd's I should play. It was then that I made a choice. I decided to play the first Omen Cd.
Boy oh boy, it was absolutely wonderful. When I played the first Cd for the two idols, I couldn't resist going along with the music. When the first track began, both Kelly and Fantasia started to cry. As the Cd progressed, the music was just too much for them to endure. They screamed, cried out, begging for the music to end, but I ignored them. Letting the music do it's work. I also couldn't resist laughing at their tearful begging for mercy. The song "Killer Storm" was when it became too much for these idol fools. By the end of the track called, "The Alter," both of them were screaming and crying so much, that they both had to be carried off to mental institutions to die.
To make a long story short, I also did the same thing to Simon Cowell, and Paula Abdul. This time I played the second disc, and the same thing happened to them, and I said, "That's what you get for judging non-talented fools, and destroying music." When I said those things, I proceeded to take a whip and flog them until they couldn't stand it any onger. If this Cd set is what you want to use to punish those American Idol fools like I did, then this Cd is for you. Ave Satani, versus christus, Ave Satani. Buy this(...) if you dare.

Bassists, as a rule, aren't always the most ambitious of musicians, which makes this series of recordings by a California sideman an anomaly. Rob Wasserman, whose work in support of Stephane Grappelli and Dan Hicks among others, had earned praise in musician circles, but he found the constraints on his instrument, particularly in a pop context, confining. So he finagled a deal with Rounder Records to assemble 1983's Solo, a collection of a dozen bowed and plucked originals and one cover ("Lady Be Good") that showcase Wasserman's unfettered instrumental dexterity and creativity. Buoyed by the warm response, Wasserman began building on his concept with 1988's Duets, enlisting a diverse lot of collaborators spearheaded by Aaron Neville, Lou Reed, and Rickie Lee Jones. Trios carried the concept to its conclusion, with the master bassist bringing aboard two partners for each track. A decade after Trios, Rounder has bundled all three albums in one package. The result, though marred by the occasional misstep (Trios is the spottiest of the three), has aged agreeably. Rounder's package also includes a couple of bonus tracks and old and new liner notes. --Steven StolderAlbum Description
Released together for the first time, Rob Wasserman's groundbreaking 3-CD Trilogy includes Solo, his collection of compositions for acoustic bass; along with the Grammy-winning Duets; as well as Trios. This tremendous package includes new notes, photos and commentary, plus 24-bit remastering by Joe Gastwirt. Featured performers include: Cheryl Bentyne, Edie Brickell, Les Claypool, Elvis Costello, Willie Dixon, Al Duncan, Jerry Garcia, Stephane Grappelli, Matt Haimovitz, Dan Hicks, Bruce Hornsby, Joan Jeanrenaud, Rickie Lee Jones, Branford Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin, Aaron Neville, Lou Reed, Marc Ribot, Jennifer Warnes, Bob Weir, Chris Whitley, Brian Wilson, Carnie Wilson and Neil Young.Customer Reviews:
Lobster with peanut butter, better get Bromberg's "wood".......2005-01-25
I'm glad I bought this as a set, since I would have regretted to buy them separately. Now I've made myself a compilation of the listenable tracks.
Let's begin with the horrible:
Rickie Lee Jones might have been drunk or high or both when she recorded "The moon is made of gold", she starts the track singing acceptably and then she slurrrrrrrss like a bottle and a half of bourbon, and whines and...argh!
"Ballad of the runaway horse" for some reason sounds too country for the rest of the album, it just doesn't fit.
"American Popsicle"
A track that will make your stomack turn inside out courtesy of Edie Brickell, spoiling the work of the great Jerry Garcia, and "Zillionaire" is food poisoning, for the same reasons.
The first half of Lima Twist has the worst bowing I've heard from a bassist, sounds just like the old Godzilla movies, but.. the second half of the track rocks!
Rob has chops and technique, no doubt, but he wastes it with most tracks in that there's no bridge, or main theme or apotheosis or climax.
A lot of the tracks sound unfinished, with a build up for a theme that never comes.
Now for the rescuable:
"Thirteen"
Probably a promise of what the album should have been and never was, but undoubtely a great track.
"Lima twist"
also great...on the second half.
"Lady be good"
a good sounding tune, skillfully played.
"Bass blue"
is one of the absolute best tracks on the set and I wish there were more like it.
"April aire" and "Freedom dance" leave us with 6 good tracks out of 13 making solo a 1/2 album.
On Duets, "Stardust" again opens awesomely with the voice of Aaron Neville singing a beautiful timeless song.
"Duet"
Wasserman on Wasserman, playing and acompaning himself after recording a track and then playing on top of it.
"Gone with the wind"
is both great and indigestible, everything stars fine until Dan Hicks starts "singin" like a Chipmunk around half of the track sadly appearing like a wannabe Al Jerrau who would have been a much better choice for this album, but then he regains his composture and finishes the song o.k.,but the damage is done, I had to record and edit that part of the track to make it listenable.
"Over the rainbow"
with Stefan Grapelli saves the day as the best track on this Cd, showing that when you have it, you have it regardless of age, which anyway leaves us with only FOUR good tracks out of 10! No wonder people are burning CD's!!!
Disc three starts with "Fantasy is reality" which is a bit repetitive but passes.
"Country" is a solo track that should have been included in the first album Solo, preferably instead of "Sara's Rainbow song" or "Ode to Casals" which are rather lame.
"Dustin of the Bass" is the track that finally makes you think there's some groove and wasted spark in Wasserman's head although it has EUB's (Electric Uprights)one of which sounds terrible, but Willie Dixon sounds so charming you will overlook that.
"Satisfaction"
was the track that made me buy this box set after listening to the mp3's Lima Twist and Thirteen(is that good),making me think there was more of that, but well...It is better than Spike's Bulls or Gypsy One which are the other rather cool tracks on this Cd.
The unforgivable on this set is the fact that "3 guys named Schmo" was left out of the original TRIOS Cd, being the only funk track in the whole box set.
That leaves us with 7 tracks out of 14.
Now go and listen to Bromberg's "wood" ASIN:B000063IVK you are better off with anything from Bromberg on upright.

A beautifully packaged three-disc set from the Projekt label, The Trilogy represents some of the best work of Belgian ambient composer Vidna Obmana. The albums--Passage in Beauty, Shadowing in Sorrow, and Ending Mirage--were all recorded between 1990 and 1992 and showcase Obmana's more serene, percussionless compositions. Long stretches of ethereal keyboard wax and wane, overlapping one another in smooth succession. Peaceful echoes of distant chimes weave themselves into the mix, adding a touch of melancholy. It's a perfect blend of goth and new age--relaxing yet darkly contemplative. The Trilogy also serves as a kind of stopping point for Obmana, a transition from the postindustrial soundscapes of 1989's Monument of Empty Colours to the tribal rhythms of 1993's Echoing Delight and his later collaborations with ethno-ambient maestro Steve Roach. Three hours of pure, medicative bliss. --Steve LandauCustomer Reviews:
Swimming Near a Whale.......2000-09-10
Having said that, the combination of light synthetic drones, found sounds and washes of tone really needs more time to spread out. Most of the tracks included in Trilogy are under ten minutes in length, which is a pity because there are times when the music really seems to have more to say. Still, that's certainly better than being too long!
Steve Roach (who has worked with Obmana on a number of projects) has taken this sort of music much further than these discs go, but hey, why not enjoy both?
An intense, beautiful release.
