A wonderful last fling.......2006-04-19
I'm disappointed by the negative reactions I've read to this wonderful album, which sadly turned out to be the group's swansong. Having seen them live back in 1996, when they were loud, tight and terrific, I saw the scope for stretching out that was fulfilled in their subsequent albums. "Smitten" shows a new depth in their songwriting (albeit tinged with melancholy) and Bill Janovitz has seldom been in finer voice, especially on "Postcard" and "Scottish Windows". The band's rockier side is not neglected; witness "White Paint Morning" and the broody "Knot In It", and Chris Colbourn chips in with some typical irony in "Rachael" and "The Bible".
Like all Buffalo Tom's work, repeated listening is rewarded. They remain one of the great underrated groups of the 1990s and I miss them sorely.
Smitten.......2002-05-13
Buffulo Tom's move away from inspired, driving pop-punk rock to a more mature, straight-forward pop sound is a bit of a disappointment for me. It's good to add other instruments to create new textures to their music, because you can't keep doing the same thing over and over, but they sacraficed too much of their harder edge and created a softer, more bland sound. None of these songs are horrible, but they don't do anything for me either. It's pleasant background music, nothing more.
an uncommenly crafted album of what would serve as singles.......2000-02-06
Before the purchase of this CD I had heard Buffalo Tom fleetingly, on the '95 Fort Apache Album. So I did not know what to expect from the band in a broader sense. My first impressions were good, the uncompicated songs are very well blended for what they are and that as an album it is scencerely well planned out. (Although maybe 'the bible' would have served as a more enticing opener) As time progressed I caught myself humming lines to many of the tracks, as the catchy tunes grew on me and lodged themselves into my brain. I have to admit they've stayed there ever since and I rate this as one of my favourite albums released in '98, if not the 90's as a whole. Songs are sung with passion and you get a real sense that the band believe what they're telling you within each track. The level of the songs does not at all deteriorate throughout the Album and hence it is difficult to pick stand out tracks. The gentle guitar of 'postcard', 'the bible' and 'scottish windows', the poinient 'register side' and 'see to me' along with the magnificently distorted 'knot in it' all noteworthy. It is also good to see the band branching into (retrospective: since purchasing this album I've run up a veritable Buffalo Tom back cataloge) lyrics that question truths and tackle life issues. I've used this album recently to convert people who say "Buffalo Tom, arn't they that band that murdered 'going underground'?" into genuine fans of the band, and it could do the same for you. Purchase this album and listen to the music on it, then you'll see what I mean. You will not be dissapointed, and in my opinion, it's their best album so far. If you have older songs and like them, I'm telling you, these are better. Better written, better played and, well, you fill in the rest. This album bears similarities in style to their past albums but with an extra final coat that pushes it beyond them and any similar effort I'm aware of. In it's genre this is definately the one to take with you to an island. Not that I'm planning to do anything this ceremonial, demonstrative or drastic, but just in case you are... I can't wait to see where the next album takes us. Smitten is a modern classic from an understated band that, no doubt, time will cruelly neglect.

My first taste of Buffalo Tom..........1999-06-21
and I enjoy it. The first two tracks "Racheal" and "Postcard" remind me a good deal of the Wallflowers...the other songs are good, but not great. I like this CD, but then again, I got it for 6 bucks used, so I don't know if I would pay full retail price...

very smooth for cruising.......2005-10-14
i love this album. it suggests that grunge pop coastal feel, seen in so much of joey santiago's other work. his guitar is simply the savior of this album. the only reason it doesn't get 4 stars, by me, is that it's sometimes lyrically.... weak. for lack of a more exact term. i definitely missed kim deal's vocals, but his wife has an amazing and sultry voice, although sometimes sounding a bit like gwen stefani.
hmm. i would have liked to hear joey's vocals on it as well.
but overall, definitely worth your listen.
Another gem in my collection.......2004-10-15
This album was quirky enough for me to pick up and love to listen to!
How would I compare this....hmmmm....I would probably say she is more like Tracy Bonham than anything. But PowerPop? I wouldn't go that far. She is NOT Aqua (or is that quirky powerpop?) or the spice girls.
This is rather laid back kind of music, good stuff. It's the kind of stuff you'd listen to in a coffee shop. Good music, and a wonderful singer. The guitars are very good in this album as well, and I am looking forward to another release.
My favorite tracks on this album have to be "You Are the One", "People In This World" and "Big Three Wheeler". "People in this World" has to be one of the heavier songs, along with "Flyer".
If you like Tracy Bonham....(if you even know who she is, she did that amazing song, "Behind Every Good Woman"), you'll probably like this album as well.
Linda Mallari-She Rocks!!!.......2004-05-29
Smitten is a PERFECT Indie Power Pop Gem!!! Linda Mallari is a true revelation as an artist,singer/songwriter,guitarist and classically trained pianist. Her voice is beautiful, powerful and shows so much confidence along with her Pixie husband Joey Santiago.Joey provides amazingly rich textures and once again shows his great ear for sweet tones on his guitars.Surfy and heavenly distorted and melodic soundscapes are found all over this sonic masterpiece.I truly can't decide which songs stand out, song after song I kept saying "this is my fave, wait next one too",and so on.The Martinis have created the Greatest Indie Power Pop Record Of The New Milenium!!!!!
Miss that Pixies guitar fuzz? Look no further!.......2004-05-11
This album is great; I just got a signed copy (available thru Tower.com) in the mail today. If you like the band's song "Free" on the Empire Records soundtrack, this is more of the same. However, Joey Santiago (Pixies) does get to venture into more sonically inclined territory. (For a preview, check out "Flyer," the album's invigorating opener. If the Pixies are to return to the studio together, we're all in for good times!)

Some Gems here.......2000-07-25
This compilation is pretty widely available still and there's some really good tracks on it. But, like almost any compiliation, there are some clunkers too. Unlike a lot of comps that will put similar bands or styles together, there's not much cohesion here.
I bought this for the Jawbreaker track (I had heard them play it live so I sought it out.) and it's probably my favorite of the disc still.
There are a few others that I wouldn't have heard of the band or the song without this disc. Steel Pole Bathtub has an interesting one on here. Though they had been playing shows around my area for a while when I bought this, I had never heard them. The Beekeeper track is also a great one if you like semi-melodic guitar based rock.
Most of the bands on here no longer are together. All in all, I'd look for this in the used bin since there's a good chance that only half the songs on here will appeal to you depending on what type of music you're into.

Smitten Killer EP !.......2005-02-13
Great Band From Canton,OH !
Get it while you can.
Kickin jams.......2001-11-20
This is a good CD! I like this band, looked at their website and stuff and it's cool. Very creepy, but different creepy. Some messed up dudes and the music is heavy as heck but not like death metal. Ahh check em out.
Solid, dark music with a thick groove.......2001-08-28
This band must be new, because I think I'd have heard of them long before if they'd been around a while. It doesn't look like they have any kind of record deal but it's only a matter of time I'm sure. The music here is thick, heavy, and dark. The band could be lumped in with other new-metal bands like sevendust and taproot, but I hear a lot more under the surface. Probably the most emotional CD I've bought since Deftone's Adrenaline.
