Editorial Reviews

Straight No Chaser
"Variable Unit, the most talented band the States has to offer."

Product Description
Through the tracking of live performances and innovative studio work, Seven Grain has candidly captured the birth of an evolving musical genre. Seven Grain merges rare innovative musical mediums with a live feel. Recorded mainly on Feb. 28 and 29th, 2000, the tracks stem either directly from a series of 'Live Issued Product' shows Variable Unit had done (where the concert is recorded and sold during the show), or from rehearsals for the shows on these two dates.

The musicians who performed in this line-up of VU were: Matt Montgomery-Bass, Kat Ouano-Keys, Ron E. Beck-Drums, DJ Zeph-turntables, Gregory Howe-Guitar, Jon Birdsong-Trumpet, and Azeem. Guitar legend Calvin Keys played on one date, as did bassoonist and saxophonist Paul Hanson. The shows were recorded by Ben Conrad, and subsequent mixing and editing were performed by DJ Zeph, Ben Conrad and Gregory Howe.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a work of art.......2003-08-13

I am grateful that I happened to purchase this album, just happening to spot it by the neat looking cover. Now I'm hooked on Variable Unit. If you're the kind of person looking for a jazzy, hip-hop, smooth melodic kind of sound, then 'Seven Grain' is perfect for you. This is one of those albums that you could listen to continuously, over and over in your CD player without ever getting tired of it. The rythyms, melodies, and just the overall composition of all the blended musicians to create this beutiful sound is merely perfect, but more importantly the relaxed, unconscious mood is what is brought out when listening to this. I'm not much of a critic, but I am honest to say that I rarely come across an album where EVERY track is good and fun to listen to. A few of my favorite tracks are 7, 8, and 9:'Dr. J. Dub', 'Sniper', and 'Minus One'. I hope those of you interested in purchasing this CD, highly considers to do so, because you will not be disappointed. Also check out DJ Zeph's stuff too!!!
