As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.

Pretty good.......2007-01-31

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

Great memories but nothing Remastered here........2006-04-15

To call this CD remastered is a bit misleading. I would have gotten the same results by sticking a cheap microphone near the speaker of an equally cheap television set.

The songs and sounds of the Marx Brothers brought back great memories but the skips in the CD and the overall quality of sound was a bit disheartening. If you love the Marx Brothers then buy this CD for the memories, as for the quality, I would definately think twice.

If comedy were still like this . . ........2005-08-20

. . . it'd be much better than it is - well, if you've seen "Monkey Business" you know what I'm talking about!

This CD contains music from two of the Marx Brothers' early Paramount films, "The Cocoanuts" (their first) and "Monkey Business." Since these films were made in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the sound quality isn't the best (and the dialog occasionally carries over in the music), but considering that a CD like this is hard to find, it's certainly worth adding to your Marx Brothers collection. Not only do you get Chico's chord-smashing, finger-accented piano playing, or Harpo's dreamy, beloved harp playing, you get some of the Brothers' comedy bits from these two movies - such as their hilarious Chevalier "impersations" and the immortal "Why-a-duck?" exchange.

Just a tiny bone to pick: Harpo's solo in "Monkey Business" is actually called "I'm Daffy Over You" (written by Chico!), not "Sugar in the Morning" as the CD case says.

I think it helps alot if you already like indie/brit rock, you will enjoy this album, it became one of my favourites very fast! my favourite tracks are corpses, deep pile dreams, cant see me, nah nah, what happened to you part 2 and my star. fookin cool, catchy, unique sounds...I recommend it.

an extremely erratic, scattershot debut solo album from the former Stone Roses vocalist.......2005-07-23

1997's "Unfinished Monkey Business" is the debut solo album from the former Stone Roses lead vocalist Ian Brown, and man, this is a damn weird album. Others have poked fun at the album title saying it's very appropriate--however, although "unfinished" isn't a bad word to describe this album overall, and even better word is "aimless".

Many of the tracks here are Brown solo 'compositions' that feature him on all instruments, and none of them fail to get you thinking, "What the hell is this?"--his instrumental skills seem rudimentary at best, his keyboard/ programmed drumming is at times hilarious, and you're left wondering what the hell he's trying to get at. The album opening "Intro Under The Paving Stones: The Beach" is a baffling sound collage. "Sunshine" is a sloppy, dull lo-fi acoustic ballad with a brief tacked-on keyboard 'coda'. "Lions" features an annoyingly, endlessly repeated chorus line and overblown "soulful" vocals from Denise Johnson, and it wasn't exactly a great idea to mix her to the far left channel while Brown's vocals are to the far right; thankfully, much of the track is instrumental, and it does have some entertainment value despite all the annoyances. "Deep Pile Dreams" is half-baked and thinly performed. The baffling instrumental title track features hilariously amateurish keyboard playing over programmed drums. My CD copy also contains a 'bonus' track called "Come Again" which is basically 7 more minutes of Brown horsing around and it makes annoying use of sampling.

As for the remaining tracks, a majority of them find Brown co-writing with Aziz Ibrahim who also handles a large chuck of the instrumental work. The Indian-flavored "My Star" has a neat little guitar solo although it's extremely brief, and the song just kinda drags along in a frustratingly aimless and repetitive fashion. The main song portion of the sludgy, hard-rocking "Ice Cold Cube" is strong with ear-catching guitarwork, but it proceeds to beat you over the head with the never-ending instrumental stuff going on, and when it finally does end, it does so in 'sudden death' fashion and annoyingly segues abruptly into "Sunshine". "What Happened To Ya Part 1" is a nice, catchy ditty with acoustic rhythm and acoustic slide guitars; it's followed by "What Happened To Ya Part 2" which is basically a lengthy instrumental jam with some voiceovers, and although it's not unlistenable and does have nice guitarwork, it reeks of filler. "Nah Nah", a Nigel Ippinson solo composition, is an acoustic guitar-based tune with a singalong chorus--it's pleasantly catchy, though it's rather slight.

With all of that out of the way, we are left with a pair of hands-down gems. "Can't See Me" finds Brown reunited with his old Stone Roses mates Mani and Reni for an infectiously funky looping groove tune--slamming beats, great Brown vocals, uncannily note-perfect lead guitar from Brown, and great lead bass guitar licks; it's a clear attempt at creating another gem along the lines of the Stone Roses' "Fools Gold", and it works big time. Then there's the mellow-yet-creepy "Corpses In Their Mouths", written by Brown and Ibrahim, with terrific moody lead guitar work and hushed Brown vocals; it does have some rather out-of-place harmonica work from Brown, but it's a minor quibble.

If you're a diehard Stone Roses fan, "Unfinished Monkey Business" is worth checking out--there are lots of intriguing ideas floating around on here, but it sure is wildly erratic and very tough to listen to all the way through.

Appropriate title.......2004-05-11

Ian Brown is by far the most creative mind out of the Stone Roses, and Unfinished Monkey Business proves it. Compared to the drab debut from John Squire's Seahorses, Monkey Business feels like a towering masterpiece continuing in the tradition of superior Manchester pop. But out of context, it just can't sit still long enough to get on your good side.

This is a shame too because if Brown wouldn't have gone crazy with the production and arrangements, it might have ended up being one of my favorite CDs. He is definetly on the right track with Corpses In Their Mouths, My Star, and What Happened To Ya? But Lions doesn't know when to end, or if it even wants to end as the artificial sounding drums just drag on making the song a uninviting tizzy as he and a female voice sing "there are no lions in England" over and over and over and over again.

The biggest achievement of this album is also the biggest folly: since Corpses In Their Mouths stands head and shoulders over so much of the material here that it makes you realize what Unfinished Monkey Business COULD'VE been like. The way that the vocal melody line of the chorus weaves in and out of the lead guitar creatives a divine sound that makes one believe that everyone ought to hear this song. Superb.

If anything, Monkey Business shows us that Ian Brown is off to a good start. He just needs to trim a few things here, develop a few sounds there, and he could be unstoppable. I haven't heard his later releases. Hopefully, that is where he went.

The Ressurection Continues...........2004-02-05

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah. This is the album that Second Coming should have been. This is the Album the Roses should have ended their career with. But fortuanely Ian Brown saved the best for himself. You hear this album compared to Second Coming or The Seahorses (Albums that John Squire contributed very heavily on) and you realize who was the talent in the band. This Album is one of the greatest solo efforts ever by an artist. It takes you on a wild ride full drum beats, electronic beats, guitars and most importantly, Ian Brown's lyrics. Lyrically this album is remaniscent of the Roses first album which is a strong relief. This is a must have in anyones collection. Pure Genius!

Not worth it.......2002-01-09

I was exploring the Paris Virgin Megastore and stumbled upon this. I thought to myself, "Well, Silmarils was good, I wonder if this is good too?" I listened and for some reason liked it. When I brought it home to California, I took another listen to it. I was confused: was this horrible thing what I listened to in the France? Well, it was and now I'm stuck with it. Maybe somebody will buy it off me. But it's got sloppy drums, sloppy vocals, the lyrics are nonsense ("There are no lions in England/No no no!") and it just frustrates me to listen to it. But if you're a fan of Ian Brown's, I suppose you may like it. I sure didn't.

Cliche or not, Monkey Business may be the ultimate example of that description, with sophistication in its musicianship and lyricism that belies its apparent simplicity and accessibility. Quirky Fun.......2006-09-22

My kids love to listen to music. They also love to laugh. Combine the two and you're talking audio gold in my house. Eric Herman does just that on his Monkey Business CD. a hilarious collection of songs about monkeys, pirates, tongue twisters, and prune juice. Yes, prune juice.

I gave his disc the ol' family car workout to see what the kids would think. The sudden silence from the backseat meant they're interested. Continued silence meant they like it. A request to "hear it again" and we knew that it's a keeper.

The thing they seem to like most about this CD is Herman's oddball sense of humor. Even the grownups in the car had to laugh at such lyrics as "A pirate without treasure is like a monkey without a spatula." Or the boy pretending to be a robot who suffers a system malfunction when his mom asks him to clean his room.

Not every song has a punchline. After a funny sketch about a math gameshow, Herman slows things down with two beautiful lullabies that show off his chameleon-like vocal talents. But it's the previous dozen songs that my kids keep asking for, especially one of the best pirate songs I've ever heard.

Like so many of the very best children's CDs, these are tunes that even parents can listen to on a long road trip or during clean-up time at home. From the polished production to Herman's pleasing voice (which reminded me of Glen Phillips at times) to the clever lyrics, there's something here for kids of all ages.

Not bad at all, a different take on some classics.......2006-09-14

I know remixes can be controversial and many Elvis "purist" dislike them (hence the name of this collection "Too Much Monkey Business"); however I think they provide an outlet for fans that long for more Elvis recordings. He should have had many more years of recording and remix projects are a way to glean "new" material from an old library of recordings. In 1980 Elvis' long-time producer and friend, Felton Jarvis went back into the studio with a bunch of Elvis vocal tracks to produce a "new" Elvis album. No one else would have had better insight into what kind of music Elvis might have recorded had he been alive in 1980. The end result was the "Guitar Man" album released early in 1981 (which is included in this collection as songs 3 through 12). The album was a moderate success reaching number 49 on the album chart and number 6 on the country album chart in the US. The single "Guitar Man" did better, reaching 28 on the Pop Chart, 16 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, and number 1 on the Country Chart in the US (this turned out to be Elvis' last appearance in the US Top 40 and his last US number 1 single until 2002 when the "A Little Less Conversation" remix topped the US singles sales chart). The album and the song were also modest hits in the UK. "Loving Arms" was released as the second single from the album and was a Top Ten Country hit. Unfortunately Jarvis died just before the album was released and did not see the fruits of his labor.

This collection includes 10 other Jarvis remixes that were not included on the "Guitar Man" album. It is possible that Jarvis had planned to use them on a second album of remixes. While the remixes are pretty good and most have more punch to them, in general I prefer the originals. It takes a few listens to get used to the differences. Some of the songs sound like they just wanted to make them sound different and not necessarily better. One of the exceptions is "Guitar Man"; the remix sounds much better than the original too me. It features the song's composer, Jerry Reed on guitar. He played guitar on the original too, only this time he plays an electric guitar instead of acoustic and it sounds great. "Burning Love" rocks (but so did the original) and I also really like "I'll Hold You In My Heart", "Too Much Monkey Business" and "Clean Up Your Own Backyard".

The package does not include any liner notes, which is disappointing. It would have been interesting to see who was playing what or get additional background on the project since some of the vocals sound like they may be from alternate takes. The "Blue Suede Shoes" vocal is from a live recording. For completeness sake, I wish they had included the 1985 remix of "Always On My Mind", which was released as a single after Willie Nelson's version of the song hit the charts, and has been out of print since then.

While it is a good collection, this is recommended for hardcore Elvis fans only. The differences in the songs are probably not worth the costs of the import CD for most fans. If you want to hear the "Guitar Man" remix, it is available on Elvis' excellent "Great Country Songs" CD at a much cheaper price.

Worth a listen.......2005-07-22

Familiar songs - different backings. Well worth a listen as they are different and provide an alternative listening experience to the original masters. Take "Kentucky Rain", "Burning Love" and "I'll Be There". Good production!

Stick 'em up, CD buyers.......2004-10-12

If you have a limitless budget for buying CDs, here's some Elvis for you. "Guitar Man" is the only song worthy of attention; the others can be found on other CDs with a longer list of other hits. You may even be able to get TWO other CDS for the same price. Be frugal. It ain't worth the bucks.

The CD makes for an easy target, but a fun listen!.......2004-03-12

Many find this CD laughable because it sounds a bit "dated". While some songs do not stand the test of time so well, what is great about this album is that the songs sound so different. Until I heard this CD I was not too excited about the posibility of a modern-day Elvis remix album, after hearing the mostly funky remixes, I truly hope there will be a remix album in Elvis' future.

We don't need a Guitar Man, son.......2003-08-17

After Elvis died, his producer Felton Jarvis erased the instrumental tracks from some of Elvis' songs and added new backing tracks. This was a misguided attempt to "modenize" Elvis. It was actually a moderate success. The remixed version of "Guitar Man" actually reached # 1 on the country charts. Tracks # 3 to 12 here duplicate the orignal "Guitar Man" album. The rest of the tracks are previously unreleased songs from the same sessions. If I had to describe what these remixed songs sound like, I would say that majority of them sound like '80s country songs. For the most part, it doesn't really work for me. To my ears, "Burning Love", "Guitar Man" and "Too Much Monkey Business" are pretty good, but everything else is basically worthless. Recommended for curiosity seekers only.

Only for the serious John Wetton fan!.......2005-02-03

The serious fan of John Wetton would no doubt find this archive of odds-n-ends (including the [pretty much instrumental] demo of "Book of Saturdays") a delight. I guessing, however, that the casual music fan would not enjoy this CD.

Untitled.......2002-09-20

John Wetton has played bass and sung with groups as diverse as Roxy Music and Uria Heep but is perhaps best known for his work with Asia. From 1972-1974 he was a member of King Crimson where Palmer-James began adding the words to music mostly composed by Wetton and guitarist Robert Fripp. This disc is a fine collection of demos and live versions of some of the tunes that the pair have had a hand in over the years. The earlier King Crimson demos consist of little more than Wetton on piano and vocals,intended as guides for Palmer-James to write his lyrics to. For Crimson fans it is of course more than worthwile to hear these early and very basic takes on what would become classic material.
The disc provides an unexpected degree of satisfaction in it's overall feel and style and certainly enhances the reputations of both gentlemen. The later live material in particular is very good.

If you dig hip-hop in it's truest form than you've got to get "Monkey Business." Any ill Harmonics fan will appreciate this record as well as those experiencing them for the first time.
