Though the title describes the contents of the latest release by the veteran mandolin virtuoso and his crack band, it hardly suggests how far this musical interplay extends beyond bluegrass convention. The soaring strings of "Crossing the Briney" suggest the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, while "Going to Richmond" and "Goin' to the Ceili" both springboard from Irish reels as well. There's a clarinet break in the jazzy "Gallatin Rag," and accordion graces a couple of the other tracks. Skaggs pays tribute to a couple of other bluegrass progressives in "Missing Vassar" (in homage to the late Clements) and "Dawg's Breath" (for David Grisman). Though all of the musicians get ample opportunity to showcase their chops, what's most impressive is the cohesiveness of the ensemble, the way they serve the music and support each other instead of simply showing off. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

The most fun listening in a long time........2007-04-02

Outstanding music mix.......2007-02-08
Great Music by Talented Instrumentalists.......2007-01-24
In fact, I find myself listening often, and liking more and more each of the eleven offerings. Doesn't matter to me if not all is pure bluegrass, enjoy the accordian, clarinet, strings, etc. The blues rag song is terrific as well as the Celtic sounding "Crossing the Briney."
These are certainly fine musicians on their instruments who play wonderfully together, with their turns at jamming, or whatever it's called in bluegrass. In any case, they've got a new fan.
A tasteful tune set with several interpretive twists.......2006-12-25
No one can doubt the astonishing fluency with which these string practitioners speak. While they have a strong preference for moderate-tempo'ed offerings, they manage to create an eclectic state of musical mind with tastes of old-time, Celtic, bluegrass, Dawg, blues, jazz and classical idioms. Green hues of the Land of the Shamrock color compositions like "Going to Richmond" and "Goin to the Ceili." If a fusion of Celtic and Classical sounds are your cup o' tea, listen to the embellished brogue provided by the Nashville String Machine on "Crossing the Briney." With the band "playing their thoughts" in a manner similar to how fiddler Vassar Clements used to, "Missing Vassar" establishes a hillbilly jazz groove based on a recurring lick that honors that musical philosopher. With a copious amount of respect for another mandolinist (David Grisman), Ricky Skaggs and the boys lay a hot little tune, "Dawg's Breath," on us. The melody inhales and exhales with precision, bounce and pizzazz. When "Gallatin Rag" begins, as on a few others, we clearly hear the only minimal shortcoming in this album's music - some distraction caused by Ricky's pick on his fingerboard. Statman embellishes that offering with some euphonious clarinet. In Statman's hands, it becomes clear why the instrument was once affectionately called the "hot licorice stick" among swing musicians in the 1930s and 40s.
All in all, this album is a tasteful tune set with several interpretive twists along the way. Performed by exceptional musicians, the composite is a product that would make Bill Monroe proud. They don't betray their bluegrass pedigree. Rather, their adventurous vision provides a treasure trove of unique tunes. I'd like to see some music notation and/or tablature for them so I can learn a few favorites. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

This is going to be stuck in my CD player for a good long while. Lots of fun and these guys are GOOD! I just started taking boogie woogie piano after several years of classical so I can hear what they are doing and am just so impressed - I can't imagine playing this well. I like fast music and while some may say its showing off - I say 'if you got it flaunt it'!
The difficult thing with boogie is the timing - getting the right hand and left hand coordinated when they are hitting different timings and rhythms. I should say its difficult for me but these guys get it right - sooo right!
Clean recording and not a single track which I skip.

Outstanding collection of '50s and '60s instrumentals.......2005-02-16
Volume two of their pop instrumental series is one of Eric's strongest discs to date. Instrumentals have a hard time cracking the American charts, and so those that do find an unusually rare resonance with listeners. On occasion these instrumentals are tied to cultural phenomena such as hit TV shows ("The Bonanza Theme," "Dragnet," "Quentin's Theme," and "Bandstand Boogie") or commercials ("No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In)" and "Music to Watch Girls By"), but more often than not they're just unusual, maddeningly hummable pieces of music that won't leave a listener's mind.
High on the can't-get-it-out-of-your-head list is Bent Fabric's laconic "Alley Cat" and Don Robertson's "The Happy Whistler." The latter tune pairs nicely with Whistling Jack Smith's "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman," as rare examples of music that can oust "It's a Small World" from your cerebral cortex. Other tracks, such as Horst Jankowski's "A Walk in the Black Forest," capture a mood like no lyric ever could, and Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax" had three lives, first as a flop, then as a hit, then most eternally as Benny Hill's closing chase theme.
This is an incredibly rich collection of songs covering orchestral pop, lounge, rock, jazz, ragtime and more. The tracks are beautifully mastered and with plenty of true stereo (mono on #5-8 and 19-21). Joseph Laredo's liner notes are informative, and the packaging provides detail on chart and release dates.
For Water Aerobics, THE MOST POPULAR CD!.......2003-07-04
I've lent this CD Series to so many water aerobic instructors (four different ones), for so many days, that I've actually purchased second copies, something I've done with no other CD.
So, why this popularity? Possibly because: (1) The music is positive/upbeat, (2) the variety, and (3) the excellent sound quality. If you know why the popularity, please tell me.

Thelonious Monk created some of his most innovative music during the period in the early '50s when he recorded for Prestige, and Sonny Rollins was in the forefront of the few musicians who could respond to Monk's challenging compositions and sharp-angled, dissonant comping. It's apparent in the way the two transform the standards "The Way You Look Tonight" and "I Want to Be Happy," Rollins soaring through the former and bringing wry wit to the latter. Monk's "Friday the 13th" is heard in an extended performance with Rollins and French-horn player Julius Watkins--challenging, probing music. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Marquee players, but look before you leap........2007-02-16
The proceedings are enjoyable, frequently original and illuminating, but not as telepathic, or even miraculous, as some reviewers have described them. It's instructive to hear the "real" Monk emerge on "Happy," allowing the beat to establish itself before playing off of and around it, making the piano another polyrhythmic, percussive voice as opposed to a solo voice accompanied by rhythm section or a member of the accompanying team itself (these latter two roles characterizing his work on "Way You Look").
Still, I'm afraid that after hearing the Monk and Coltrane Carnegie Hall concert, this one is anticlimactic, sonically as well as musically. Moreover, Rollins, though bearing some of the same melodic-rhythmic qualities of his successor Charlie Rouse, lacks the light articulations and responsive quickness of the underrated Rouse. Compared to Rouse's sportive playfulness, Rollins sounds somewhat heavy and ponderous to me in Monk country. Coltrane's intensity meshes better with Monk whimsy because the piano serves as both ground and foil to the altissimo, rapturous flights of the tenor saxophone, as though Monk's solid harmonies are the falconer around which the falcon's spiraling harmonies are free to expend themselves without spinning out of control.
Blakey and Monk, both of whom are heard here, always made for an engaging rhythmic pairing, but this session leaves you wanting to hear more. An unfortunately overlooked recording (perhaps because it was on the "wrong" label) is "Thelonious Monk with Art Blakey" (Atlantic, 1957), which also features excellent trumpet work by the sadly underrecorded Bill Hardman. It's a fascinatiing duel between two equally strong-minded music-shapers, and though Blakey delivers his brand of overwhelming firepower, Monk doesn't yield an inch--in fact, both players emerge as winners but not before a Titanic struggle.
Monk, Rollins and Some Really Fine Friends!...A Treasure Remastered.......2006-11-04
Okay so first things first, these recordings from the early 1950's sound like they were made yesterday. A fantastic job by Rudy Van Gelder, who was the original engineer, was at the sessions and knew exactly what the musicians wanted these great numbers to sound like. The CD runs about 35 minutes. There are 5 tracks all a good length from 5:09 to a get lost in 10:30 for Friday the 13th, which by the way was the date of one of the sessions that every thing seemed to go badly.
Every number and every musician on this CD are beyond great. Opening with the jazziest rendition(my new favorite) of "The Way You Look Tonight", Rollins takes the lead and already you are feeling the music. The other tracks are "I Want To Be Happy", "Work", "Nutty" and as mentioned "Friday The 13th". The leads differ with each number. Rollins plays on tracks 1,2 and 5. Monk is on every track and what an magnificent piano player. It really takes your breath away. Other musicians on the album are stand outs as well. Percy Heath on bass for 3 of the songs is incredible.Drummers, Arthur Taylor, Art Blakey and Willie Jones really cook. And I must make mention of Julius Watkins on the French Horn sitting in on "Friday The 13th". These guys, with their own wonderful styles, have these instruments talking and singing to each other. The listener will know exactly the mood and the conversation.
These were some important sessions that really preserve the greatness of Theolonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and friends. And how fortunate we are to be able to listen to them on this high quality recording, the remastering overseen by the Engineer who was there. The music will at the very least have you finger snapping and toe tapping. Take it in your car, it'll keep you good company in traffic, or around the house. The CD has a nice insert with production stories of the sessions.
I love it..You will too....laurie

This CD Comes With Memories To Have And To Hold..........2005-01-15
"Breezin'" was the first album that got me hooked with the music of Mr. Benson. My sister and I collected most of his earliest albums. My sister stopped collecting several years ago but I remained the 'faithful fan' to this day and continued with my collection. I always enjoy listening to his kind of music. I truly believe that he's one of the greatest and polished guitarists of all-time and an awesome vocalist as well.
A good friend of mine who has an impeccable taste in music and an extensive musical knowledge who also plays the guitar has the following reflection on our mutual favorite, George Benson, and I quote:
"George Benson is the best 'flat pick' guitarist who ever lived -- his single note sequences are better jazz than Lenny Breau, but he looked up to Lenny as the greatest all around finger style guitarist who ever lived. His "Tenderly" is the best flat picking solo of all time I'd say -- I saw George perform at a Town Hall in Bermuda in the '70s, just as "White Rabbit" LP was making him a star and his own composition "Ode To A Kudu" is the finest 'live' performance I have ever heard by any guitarist bar none."
This compilation CD consists of some of my cherished melodies of all-time, and it's a testament of Mr. Benson's mastery of guitar. The tracks I love the most next to "Breezin'" are "Tenderly" from his 1989 album of the same title, "My Heart Is Dancing" from "Love Remembers" album in 1993, his very own composition "Weekend In L.A." from his 1978 album of the same title, "We All Remember Wes," a Stevie Wonder-penned-bubbly- melody, Jose Feliciano's "Affirmation" from the 1979 album "Breezin'" and one of his original compositions "Mimosa" from his 1987 album "Collaboration" (with another guitar virtuoso, Earl Klugh).
This CD is a must-have and has the greatest collection of the best instrumentals ever recorded in the history of jazz. You should listen to it, and thank me for it! It's absolutely a gem!
Awesome!!!!.......2004-01-19

Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.
