What's all the "Hullabaloo" about?.......2005-05-01
No, it's not a new album. Rather, it's a collection of B-sides, rarities, and a 2001 live concert. Most bands don't sound too great in either case, but Muse does. The first disc is made up of their B-sides and rarities, which tend to be quite good actually.
It doesn't start off promising, with the schizophrenic prog-rocker "Forced In," which would be fine if it weren't for the endlessly cycling synth that obscures everything else. But things get stronger after that, with the explosive downward spiral that is "Shrinking Universe" ("There's nothing left to die for!"), the softer poppy "Recess," and the surprisingly gentle acoustic ballad "Map Of your Head."
Most of the other songs follow those examples, either being epic and bombastic or quieter and more intimate. With, of course, some eerier songs thrown in, like the rippling sweetness of "Shine Acoustic." Are they as good as Muse's proper albums, especially since a few B-sides sound like the lost soundtrack of the X-Files? Not really, but they are remarkably good, and still better than average.
Which brings us to the live performance, which took place in October of 2001, in Paris's "Le Zenith." Well, to put it simply, these guys rock. It opens with a cheering crowd, right before they kick off into a tornado of bass, drums and guitar. Unlike many rock bands, these guys lose none of their power or musical richness in live performances.
The inevitable flaw? Well, that would probably be Matt Bellamy -- he doesn't sound too different from in the albums, but it's sometimes hard to hear him above the drums, explosive synth and spiralling bass. However, the guys lose none of their intensity musically, and it's hard to find a single flaw in their playing. If Muse are known for their prowess in live performances, then it's easy to see why.
The B-sides are a minor treasure trove, while the live album is a gem in itself, bringing their concert to life as nothing -- except a DVD -- could. A must-have for Muse fans.

101 Dalmatians (Original Soundtrack)

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Stunning Live album, as good as it gets ..........2006-07-29
This live album from 2001 is, for me, an absolutely stunning performance from a band who are prepared to push the boundaries of Rock. The first album I bought from Muse was 2001's "Origin of Symmetry" after reading a review and listening to a couple of tracks. I was hooked. Muse do wear their influences on their sleeve (a large heping of Queen, a fair bit of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin) as they produce a sound that is uniquely their own. Lead singer Mike Bellamy has a great voice with tremendous range and the combination of this superb drumming, bass, guitar and keyboard work in a live setting is simply awesome.
So many highlights, the one for me that sums up Muse best, especially in the live context, is "Citizen Erased" - FANTASTIC! This is one of six tracks from "Origin of Symmetry". Two tracks from 1998's effort "Showbiz" plus three new tracks make up the set.
(Also check out the DVD - well worth it, fantasic sound, a real rocking show which features 8 more tracks than the CD (four more from "Showbiz" and " Origin").
The bonus "B Sides" disc is a great addition with some excellent tracks (6 of the 10 tracks I really enjoyed which is great for an extra disc of B sides).
All 'n' all - There are a handful of "new" bands who I enjoy listening to and Muse is way up there and this Live album is stunning.
Certainly one of the great live albums of the new millennium from one of the great bands of these modern times, a tremendous experience in today's age - real musicians playing real instruments and playing with energy and passion in front of a very appreciative audience at the "Zenith" in Paris.
Certainly one of my favourite live albums over the last 35 years, here are some of my other favourites)...
- "How the West was won" from Led Zeppelin (1972)
- "Made in Japan" from Deep Purple (1972)
- "Yessongs" from Yes (1973)
- "Welcome back my friends" from ELP (1973)
- "Too late to stop now" from Van Morrison (1974)
- "On your feet or on your knees" from Blue Oyster Cult (1975)
- "Live in London" from Bruce Springsteen (1975)
- "One more from the Road" from Lynyrd Skynrd (1976)
- "Frampton comes alive" from Peter Frampton (1976)
- "Live Bullet" from Bob Seger (1976)
- "Seconds Out" from Genesis (1977)
- "A Live Record" from Camel (1978)
- "Bursting Out Live" from Jethro Tull (1978)
- "Two for the Show" from Kansas (1978)
- "Playing the fool" Gentle Giant (1978)
- "Waiting fro Columbus" from Little Feat (1978)
- "Strangers in the Night" from UFO (1979)

- "Out West" from Gomez (2005)
- "Instant Delivery" from Flower Kings (2006).
- "Okonokos" from My Morning Jacket (2006)
I really enjoy this album, if you do get it I hope you do to.
A fan-only collection, but a good one for the fans ..........2005-10-18
Disc 1 - The B-sides
This lot is naturally quite a mixed group, as is only natural. Severa, reviewers have already commented on the natural and unavoidable problem with B-side tracks - being album leftovers, they will often be of lower quality than the album cuts. That's true sometimes, but not always, and this collection contains some really great tracks - as well as some not-so-great tracks.
'Shine Acoustic', , 'Map Of Your Head', 'Shrinking Universe', and 'Recess' are all of a quality that would easily allow them for inclusion on album without falling short - in fact 'Recess' is much better than many of the tracks included on the 'Showbiz' CD, and 'Shine Acoustic' might be in my top 5 of favourite MUSE tracks EVER. The latter is a ballad of amazing beauty, the slow sound of rain falling leads into an almost ethereal song, and Matt Bellamy is doing a vocal that shows him to be way beyond any other vocalist presently in rock music, bar none. In contrast, the almost merry 'Map Of Your Head' is quite irresistable, the jingling - medieval, some have described it as - sound standing quite off the usual MUSE sound - without really sounding out-of-place, because with MUSE you never really know what you get. 'Shrinking Universe' and 'Recess' are honest rockers, the latter with a beautiful piano drive very much remeniscent of 'Sunburn' from 'Showbiz'.
'Nature_1' is another track that deserves mention. It's something as rare as an uptempo acoustic song, with the acoustic guitar as the primary instrument. 'The Gallery' is an instrumental track, not the most interesting they've done, but not bad. On the more weird side, 'Forced In' seems to be drifting along somewhere in outer space, interesting certainly, but very odd. Interesting is also 'Hyper Chondriac Music', a scaled down version of album track 'Hyper Music' - forget all about a rushing pace and mind-blowing noisy guitars - oh, the roaring guitars are there still, but where the album version seemed almost primitive, at least if you didn't listen to the lyrics, this version is anything but primitive - omnious, threatening and nearly grotesque at times, yes, but with grandeur and beauty to follow. Very interesting indeed.
Less fortunate are the results on 'Ashamed' and 'Yes Please' - both are honest rockers, but without very much to offer besides that. Especially 'Yes Please' is way to heavy and primitive to my taste - fans who appreciate the more noisy side of MUSE, however, will probably be delighted in these tracks.
On the bottom-line I will add, that the B-side CD should not be considered as an album, but as a compilation. This one has much to offer the fans, but is not the place for newbies to come.
Most annoying is the fact that the collection is so incomplete. The CD runs for only 40 minutes, so there's some 30 minutes to follow, and loads of B-side tracks have been left off, especially from the Showbiz period. The band might have considered them below standards, but die-hard fans will now have to pay big money to find all the old singles to evaluate for themselves. Also, a double single set was released along with this collection - the Dead Star / In Your World singles, that features the two A-side tracks, and two B-sides, Futurism and the killer cover of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You', that is now legendary among MUSE fans! None of these four tracks are available (in studio versions) besides on these singles, so it seems odd that none of them are on this CD. That's a huge minus for this CD.
Overall rating for CD 1: 6 out of 10.
Disc 2 - Live From Paris
What needs to be said about this recording can be done fairly quickly: MUSE a fabulous live! Matt Bellamy easily proves that his amazing vocal is not only a studio-produced phenomenon. The songs are delivered in a more heavy mich here, which will appeal to some fans and not to others. Certainly I'm not too keen on the very aggressive side of MUSE, but the takes on tracks like 'Citizen Erased', 'Showbiz', 'Megalomania' and 'Muscle Museum' are top rate. Some of the tracks included does not range among my favorites - the nearly absurd 'Micro Cuts' and 'Agitated' among them - but that aside, there's not a spot to put on this recording.
The downside is that this CD only features a selection of the songs recorded on the two nights, october 28 and 29. Apparantly unknown to some fans in the US, a double DVD was released with these CDs; one DVD with a full-length concert recording, and the other with a documentary. Oddly enough, 'Dark Shines' which is on the CD is NOT on the DVD, but what the explanation for this is escapes me. Still, it would seem more natural to release either a complete B-side collection, or a complete live double-CD. As it is now, this double CD collection offers neither fully.
Overall rating for CD 2: 8 out of 10.
OVERALL RATING BOTH CDs: 7 out of 10. Good but not essential.
