The smooth-jazz acoustic-guitar star gets his R&B groove on throughout many tracks on this beautifully recorded disc, and not just on the obvious tunes like the sneaky Isley Brothers cover, "Who's That Lady" (with Kirk Whalum cooking on sax), and the old Temptations number, "Just My Imagination," but also on the very funky "Turn It Out," with sax man Euge Groove, and the Latin-tinged "Bueno Funk," with Steve Cole on the horn. The rest of the album is about as dependable and complete an album White has put together since the promise he showed with Basia in the mid-'80s, which is to say smooth-jazz radio and fans are sure to be all over his thoughtful melodies and tasteful arrangements. Other guest stars include trumpeter Rick Braun, the ubiquitous keyboardist Jeff Lorber, and saxophonist Dave Koz, who warms the title ballad. More tracks sure to please fans of the very popular guitarist include "Pedro Blanco," and "Baby Steps." --Mark Ruffin

Classical Master.......2007-02-07
Perhaps his best combination of smooth jazz with strong classical undertones, this album is a joy. It's heart wrenching throughout, underscoring some of it's composer's personal struggles during it's creation. The ability of this guitar great to translate that through your CD player or musical medium of your choice is magical! Beautiful melodies, soulful, and extrarodinarily creative. A tad off center from traditional White CD's, yet not one bit less worthy. One of my favorites!
Peter White is the Best Smooth Jazz Artist.......2007-01-10
Peter White is my favorite of all smooth jazz artists. And "Glow" is my favorite cd in my collection of over 1000 works. I always carry an extra unopened copy of "Glow" to give as an unexpected present when someone seems in need of a pleasant surprise.
Supersmooth jazz.......2006-11-10
This is my favourite smooth jazz album. I like the upbeat tempo, and especially the tracks: Bueno Funk, Who's that lady. No,I take that back, I love all the tracks. Also check out Walk on by on his album Reflections.
Another "WONDER" of the world! GLOW!!!.......2006-06-02
One "word" for this album......BAD (as in GOOD)!!! I have several Peter White CD's, and none are disappointing. I first heard him about four years ago in Detroit,MI.(with Dave Koz & Rick Braun), and was quite impressed. The man can deal! His music usually contains a fine blend of good sounds, "original, old-school, top hits, up-beat, smooth, etc." Sounds to fit any mood.
The sounds from this CD do much more than "GLOW". Staying power comes to mind.
Tied with "Caravan of Dreams" as his best work........2006-03-10
I have six Peter White albums, and "Caravan of Dreams" is tied with "Glow" as Peter White's best work. The opening track on "Glow" is my favorite piece by him, all tracks having improvised guitar work. Lots of energy for a smooth jazz album, and the final songs finish strong on both albums.

Karen Peris is a vocal ringer for Natalie Merchant (though there's also the faintest hint of Bjork in her delivery), and the band is unfailingly tuneful in acoustic guitar-piano mode. Hypnotic, slow-paced gems abound, notably "Everything's Different Now" (not the Aimee Mann song), "That Was Another Country," and "Bright as Yellow." --Jeff Bateman

years later, this is stil my summer time record :::.......2007-06-01
on this very perfect record they transitioned with huge growth from the Ritalin-dream where the lyrics were not understandable to the middle-state of dream-folk.
the album tells a panoramic story beginning by getting tucked into bed and follows through with child-like anticipation of comings and goings... and it is part of the soundtrack of my life.
Inspiring and Calming.......2006-11-10
I love this cd! all of their discs are great and the innocense mision is always on top of my playlist.
Mellow-in a good sense.......2006-11-04
I recently purchased the CD version of this album, replacing the cassette I had played frequently, especially when my children were younger.GLOW was the Innocence Mission's stab at the brass ring of mass-market success.Produced by Peter Asher,of Peter and Gordon and producer of Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor in their pop primes, this is a pleasant enough collection of simple,mood-setting tunes sung by Karen Peris in a sweet but oddly accented voice.Although they didn't steal the hearts of America, these songs with their snapshot emotional images will tug at yours if you give them half a chance-HAPPY,THE END,with its moments of bliss narrative ,always gets me.
One Of The Best Albums of All Time.......2006-04-07
I have never found better music anywhere. Brilliant simplicity, beauty found nowhere else, innocence for sure, and the desire and happiness in life that exudes from this music: it's unmatchable. I highly recommend it as one of the top albums of our time. Karen's voice is stunning, the guitar work is outstanding, everything flows and leaves me always wanting more. This album has been a favorite of mine for ten years and I still love it as I did when I first got it. It definitely GLOWS.
Warm Glow.......2006-02-17
I'm so glad I picked up this album. It's just the right spice when you need to hear something soothing and uplifting. Fans of The Sunday's will enjoy this recording.

If you think the percussionist's role is merely to supply rhythmic backbone, you haven't encountered the phenomenon named Evelyn Glennie. The category-defying Scottish musician has spent her career pursuing the unique route of percussion virtuoso, turning music into an intensely hyperactive verb. Glennie's sound world encompasses a global, pan-cultural panoply of music makers in addition to the standard drum kit: watergongs, bamboo sticks, ceramic bells, car exhaust pipes, finger cymbals, thundersheet--to name a few from the arsenal she uses here (Glennie reportedly owns over 1,000 percussive instruments). Even in her interpretations of works by other composers--such as James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel or the Grammy-nominated Concerto for Percussion by Joseph Schwantner--Glennie scoops out plentiful opportunities for improvisation; but the concept of Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was to allow Glennie to lock herself up in her studio and improvise the entire album. With the help of her collaborator, pop mixmaster Michael Brauer, the result is a fantastically textured, mesmerizing adventure for the ears and the imagination. Despite a vague ambition to explore "as many moods as possible" (Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead was apparently the source for some of the picturesque titles here, such as "Attack of the Glow Worm" and "Wind Horse"), the variety and juxtaposition of colors evoke a cinematically gripping, almost synesthetic sense of atmosphere--yet another evolution of "program music" into the 21st century? Much of the fun is in experiencing sounds whose origin remains mysterious, as Glennie performs her one-woman-as-orchestra wonders. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
music i hear with my body .......2005-03-09
I love this album!!! Evelyn Glennie is the most profound percussionist I have ever heard. Her music penetrates my body: sometimes I feel it in my heart, sometimes in my solar plexis. I feel it in my soul. This album can be enjoyed over and over and over. Thank You Evelyn Glennie! Big Gratitude!
Beyond Belief.......2004-06-16
I went to a solo concert of hers because I had heard what I thought must be hype of her wonder. I was totally and utterly destroyed by her performance. She has complete technical perfection, tremendous athletic ability (yes percussion demands of the body), personal charm, and dramatic zest. Many of the albums I listened to after disappointed me because she clearly held herself within the strict measure of the others she performed with. I suspect her deafness makes her fearful of any rubatto in an orchestral setting. This album is the only one that begins to give a sense of her god-like gifts.
You don't listen to it, you experience it.......2001-03-01
This CD is a true experience, similar to Charles Ives' "New England Holidays". The range of instruments Glennie uses and creates brings to mind Mickey Hart's statement about drummers being desperate and doing anything to produce sounds. Her music gets into your mind and body. It's appealing enough that my son, a rap fan, sat fascinated while "Land of Venden" was playing. His comment, "This is almost scary!", leads to my opinion that her talent is almost scary. Do yourself a favor and buy this one, it provides great mental and emotional rejuvenation.
Something a little different.......2000-09-23
Even if percussion sans so-called melodic instruments isn't what you think of when selecting a cd you've got to listen to this. Ms Glennie creates quite a melodic and dramatic tapestry and draws the listener right into the middle of it. Yes, it does take a few listenings to penetrate to the gist of it but that only enhances the genuine beauty contained here. Perhaps that is a given in any deeply creative work.
A near-perfect album.......2000-04-08
Even my dog liked it -- mesmerized by the music, staring at the stereo like the mutt in the RCA logo.
Solo percussion is, admittedly, an acquired taste. The song samples here give you a reasonable flavor of the album. If you don't like them, don't buy it.
At the same time, Glennie has done more than anybody to advance the art, the possibilities, and the popularity of percussion. (I saw her perform a snare solo encore last year that brought the audience to its feet.) In this album, she operates with more freedom and pushes more boundaries than in anything she's done to date. Yet it's still an approachable and genuinely exciting collection of music.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Microphones are a one-man band in which Phil Elvrum (Old Time Relijun) makes soft, psychedelic nylon-stringed guitar jangle sound both humble and heroic. While operating in an all-analog "lo-fi" mode, in the vein of Elephant 6 collective bands such as Olivia Tremor Control, Elvrum's no wannabe. The Glow, Pt. 2, his fifth release, is his most cohesive yet. All the musical elements gel with concept (in this case, fire) and breathe with the sort of spooky, misty clarity that arguably can only be captured in an intimate, non-digital production. The solitary quality of the Microphones could be compared to that of Bright Eyes, Syd Barrett, and Graeme Jefferies on Messages for the Cakekitchen. On the soothing opener, "I Want Wind to Blow," Elvrum's plaintive whisper-singing might lull you into a dream--but the bloodcurdling commando-style distortion of the second and title track will shake your senses. The Glow, Pt. 2 is like a giant ocean liner on which the songs and all their disparate elements--stark solace with violent, beautiful, otherworldly weirdness lurking beneath--control the ebb and flow of your emotional response. --Cyndi Elliott
Customer Reviews:
great album!!.......2006-02-02
The Microphones was one of the few bands that got to make lo-fi experimental pop sound great, with beautiful and melodies and an awesome haunting sound. One of the ever released lo-fi albums!!
so beautiful...........2005-06-23
Very rarely do I have to listen to an album so shockingly beautiful more than once to fully digest it. This had somewhat of a "turning on your head" effect on me, as I tried to wade through the lushness to see what this album meant to me. The lyrical quality is absolutely impressive, and the musicianship and melodic innovation is mind blowing. "The Glow pt.2", and "The Moon" are both just absolute perfection, and the rest of the album doesn't stray far from the same vein. All this is made more impressive considering this is all the musing of one man.
All of the song's cohesiveness and relationship to one another gives the album almost an ambient feel, like an alternative prettier Brian Eno. It's like he tried very hard to capture simplistic beauty, and he succeeded for the most part. The album's only flaw is that some songs rely to heavily on the fact they're pretty. They depend solely on melodic beauty with not much else adding to the artistic sentiment. These songs are deeply satisfying in the moment, but have little use when the album fades away from being new. However, if that is the only thing you can find wrong with a recorded work, then how lucky you are (as I am with this album). It's like saying you love your favorite kind of candy, but it's a little to sweet, that never stops you from guiltlessly enjoying it now does it?
Now here's a place I'd like to be.......2005-03-16
I had the album for a couple weeks and tried to listen to it as much as I could but it wasn't until just this last complete run though that I really saw this as a masterpiece, not just a work of art. It is though, no questions about. Anyone reading this already knows that this is very highly acclaimed and I am here to tell you to listen to everyone. This record is absolutely enthralling (The Glow Pt. 2), absolutely fun (I Felt My Size), absolutely adventurous (The Moon), absolutely haunting (The Headless Horseman), absolutely captivately (Something #1), absolutely psycho-pop (I Felt Your Shape), absolutely...well... what I think we all look for in music. The lyrics are great, the music is spectacular, and the production/mix is amazing. This is an emotional but lighthearted rollercoaster ride that works on an individual song level but is even better as a whole (66 minutes). I am suprized to say that I even like it better when turned down low since the headphones are optimal for it. Obviously, this record is multidimentional.
Phil Elvrum - this generations Brian Wilson?.......2004-06-09
I believe that Phil Elvrum is a modern day production genious, and this may be his masterpiece - thus far anyway...I just can't help but think of him in the same light as Brian Wilson or Curt Boettcher - he's so unique and inspired. This album absolutely requires headphones to be fully appreciated - it is so intimate and lovely - it is not mainstream, though it is pop, just unique pop which requires a bit more attention - but its rewards are substantially greater - so try it, I think any true music fan would appreciate this haunting and warm collection of brilliantly produced music.
Stunning.......2004-05-25

Repetitive.......2007-06-06
Not the album, mind you, but this review.
Little can I say that has not already been said in other reviews, but it is just so damn good I am compelled to throw in my 1 cent, as it were.
I'd be hardpressed to list a favorite song, because there isn't a single one among them that sucks or is just filler. Obviously, the speedy pacing of the songs sounds similar thanks to the furious precision of Jerry O'Neill's percussion, but the riffwork, choruses/melodies and -- lest we forget my favorite part -- brass section change it up so creatively, one is never left with a broken record (pun intended).
From the dirty swagger of "Malas Palabras" (instrumental) to the manic intensity of "Give Me Someone I Can Trust" and all preceding and subsequent cuts off this album, the ska/punk genre has never been more entertaining or original. Flawless musicianship aside, these guys are so unique that years after the ska trend came and went I'm still listening -- no one sounds like this!
Buy it. Repeated listenings are a common side effect.
Go VGS!!!.......2005-06-04
These guys are awesome both live and on CD. This is one of the first that got me into punk/ska music years ago. They keep it real. They have their own destinctive sound/style and they stick to it. My favorite on this CD is, of cousre, "el coo cooi" hehe This is a must-have for any ska fanatic.
ONE OF GGGGGGGARTH'S HIDDEN TREASURES!.......2003-06-07
I bought this CD when I was about 15 or 16 and it still plays in my stereo when I'm into a little underground mix of chicanos playing by there own set of rules. What I mean is that this record contains crisp hardcore with strong connecting ska riffs and choruses. This is probably all thanks to producer GGGGGGGarth who has worked with the best of the best and is probably one of the most influential unsung heroes in the music business back in the day of the 90's! Anyways the album never let's down and just like the cover of the CD it sounds like a hot rod on some hopped up fuel. If your into a little different mix than this is something worth checking out. The band contains a guitarist , a bass player, a drummer, and a singer but also with a horn section as well so expect the unexpected when you listen to the VOODOO GLOW SKULLS!
these guys rock!!!.......2003-04-16
this was my introduction to VGS, and what can i say i was completely blown away and imagine to my surprise being a cali girl these guys are from my hometown! they are even more awesome in person!!! my brother loves them too and takes his friends to all the local shows. i love so many songs on here but especially: El Coo Cooi, fat randy, malas palabras, land of misfit toys, closet monster. these guys are awesome!!!
whoah.......2001-06-22
I am soo sick of these new bands , with no horns i might add, that call them self ska since they have a few upstroke guitar riffs in three of their songs, my impression of new ska is :play the same three upstrokes over and over throughout verses, go to powerchords for the chorus, repeat until song is over, it honestly makes me sick, ska is hanging by a thread people, this band is the only thing keeping it attatched, Voodoo Glow Skulls, keep it up. Voodoo Glow Skulls are definetely one of the only real ska bands around today, nex to potshot and a great ol' ska band - the Specials.

A much poorer Al Jarreau at his 100% creativity peak.......2005-03-12
"Why should I work at 100% when I sell only 10% of the records with it" Jarreau once asked himself. Still, we are lucky he once did, proven by records like "Glow".
The nicest track is the title song, which shows his most velvet style of jazz singing. "Aqua de Beber" adds some latin, "Hold on me" is a superb a-capella bit, and "Rainbow in your eyes", "Have you seen the child" and "Milwaukee" give the funk it's full space.
Unlike most of his later records this one is consistent, warm (even in Milwaukee), and made just for the sake of good music. His later records still feature highlights, though they are accompanied by loads of fillers. "Tenderness" is almost on par with this one though..
Al doin' it right.......2002-09-22
A friend of mine turned me on to this album when it was one - wax, I mean. Back in high school we'd trade discoveries and when he hit me with this I was blown away. I rushed out and got "We Got By" and liked it just as much. Both of these albums are five stars as far as I'm concerned and completely blow away the later stuff that he did which turned in the direction of sappy, pop-oriented, "radio-friendly" pap. This album cooks, sways and grooves. A must. Go for that deal where you get both the above mentioned and you won't be disappointed
the jazz side of a jerreau.......1998-10-29
This album represents the non-commercial Jazz oriented gems Mr. Jerreau can produce. Somebody's Watching You is a excellent recording where Mr. Jerreau's Scat shines through.

Album Description
Glow's first full-length CD, Rain Theory, improves on the best of their 2003 EP, Gabriel. From the hard-hitting "Single" to the plaintive-yet-danceable "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", Rain Theory's layered musical textures and melodic vocals move in a more upbeat direction while still maintaining their emotional intensity.

Recently I purchased Glow's "Rain Theory" and "The Years." The only word that comes to mind in describing "Rain Theory" is astonishing. Glow's beautiful voice combines flawlessly with delightfully simple synthesized instrumentals to provide song after song of deep musical sensations. Many of the songs on "Rain Theory" feature lyrics focused on lost love. At first glance (or listen) someone might think the music here is to be gloomy or moody, but this is not so. The CD's dominant body of work seems to focus intently on themes of pain and healing such that the songs, to me, celebrate human resilience and passage beyond life challenges.
My own musical tastes vary considerably - from disco and classic 80's to contemporary rap and happy hardcore - and I am very happy to make room on my CD rack for Glow's fantastic musical mastery. I encourage everyone to give Glow a listen and be prepared to reawaken your emotions.
ALL THINGS EXQUISITE! I AM A NEW GLOW FAN FOR LIFE!.......2006-01-16
I just recently purchased "Rain Theory", along with "The Years" (the incredible follow-up to this album) and "Gabriel" (the precursor EP of this), and can not possible recommend this enough to anyone willing to listen. Now this is what music should sound like - flawless musical craftsmanship and heartwrenching, soul shattering vocals. This album, much like Glow's sophomore release, "The Years", is a masterful blend of emotional electronica; dark, sexy trip-hop perfectly married with slightly sweetened synthpop. The result? Absolutely delicious and decadent.
I must say that I am fairly disappointed to see that I am only the fourth person to review this album. While I wouldn't expect Glow to be mainstream, given what passes for music in the mainstream, I am really surprised that more electronica fans aren't really all that familiar with Glow. That statement goes for myself as well, a self-confessed audioslave to pretty much anything and everything trip-hop, synthpop and downtempo, as I just very recently made the plunge into Glow. If only I had known earlier what an indispensible addition their albums would be to my collection.
Don't put this one off any longer! Make Glow a part of your constant rotation and you won't be disappointed. Also, don't forget to pick up a copy of "The Years".
Everytime I hear This I cannot believe it's not HUGE!!!!.......2004-12-04
I am a 34 year old Real Estate agent who used to own a Dance Club.... Think 10 years ago going to school... My personal leanings musically are more 80's dance and new wave... I got into the Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Origin stuff in the early 90's but when Nirvana changed the style of mainstream music I sort of dropped out... Went to dance music and there wasnt much of it... These past few years as I was busy with a family and real job I have not payed much attention but about a year ago I found Synthpop and www.adifferentdrum.com and www.slothradio.com aside from the synthopop and Blank and Jones type stuff I have been listening to I also have liked a lot of the teen-i-bopper music out latley... really top fourtyish as it has a dancable beat and the best writers seem to have gone that direction for the money.... K thats a long intro for why this album BLOWS me away... I have all this stuff playing in my office to keep me and my staff pumped all the time and whats wierd is we have this server (iTunes) where everyone can choose from 90 gigs woths of music and with iTunes you can keep track of number of plays. In the past 3 months with probably 100 new CDs in the server in that time this one is on top of all of them with the Killers coming in second. Its sort of dark, but energy filled, INCREDIBLE vocals and it really makes you want to dance. Please... check out the different mixes of
Mmmm...my music collection is getting minty fresh...........2004-12-02
I mean it too. These past few albums that I have reveiwed really have brightened my music collection.
There wasn't much excitement going on in my music collection, so I actually did all these recommendation steps for amazon, and WOW. I am getting really good results, and I'm happy I have been taking these risks.
This CD rocks.
It's heavy enough for me, not so light, but it's got a slightly more goth rock/industrial sound to it. Like Ego Likeness or Faith and the Muse.
The first song "Single" is a perfect mix of these elements, and really starts the album off well. I think this group has a lot of potential and hope they continue putting out music.
The "Gabriel" song is really good. It's fast, and it has some good beats.
The remix, which is also on the CD, is positively stunning. I love it. Changes the feel of the song totally. makes it harder, and darker, and even adds some trance to it.
I'm very thankful for finding this genre, and I can only hope to explore it more and more.

Must for your collection ~ and your childrens collection.......2003-09-23
What a wonderful introduction to classical music for your children this CD is. My children love it and I do too. We use it as bedtime music now (ages 4 & 7). However, if your children really tune in to the music it can be a bit unnerving in parts so we used to only listen to it at home or in the car......they had to gain a few years to become comfortable with it in the darkness of their rooms at night. Buy this!
Teddy Bears a Must-Listen!.......2000-09-06
This is the first CD by the New Columbian Brass Band I have ever purchased, and I can't wait to own them all. This virtuoso group is a joy to listen to. Owning this CD is a must for lovers of brass band/turn-of-the-century music. It's a delight!
The cat's meow!.......2000-05-16
Dorian Recordings should be given some kind of award for the most imaginative releases of not only great historical but great musical value.
(DOR-93201) features the New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman playing 15 pieces written from 1900 to 1921 and inspired by animals.
So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.
This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.

An Unsung Classic Ska-core Record.......2007-01-17
Voodoo Glow Skulls' masterpiece "Who is, This is?" became the definition of street influenced ska-punk. The high energy and in-your-face bravado made me realize that ska tunes could be as tough as any hardcore punk song. Catchy, heavy, and even funny; this album shows what the underground can do at its very best.
Though predated by their "We're Coloring Fun" and "The Potty Training Years" recordings, this was definitely the landmark album for the band. Dr. Strange himself has even said in interviews that this was the most successful selling album on the DSR label.
Every song on the record is vintage Voodoo. "Who is, This is?" is an unsung classic that really deserves more recognition than it has gotten. Here is a real ska-core gem that shouldn't be missed.
My favorite VGS album..........2007-01-09
I got this CD in 97 after being introduced to VGS w/ "El Balie de los Locos." "Who is this is?" is their best in my opinion. I like every song on this one. My favorite is "Bossman," hard for anyone not to relate to the message. Ths music is fast, loud, hard; the horns are especially at the forefront most of the time on this album. I'd definitely recommend this album to VGS newbie fans as a first listen, as it is so much different, and in my opinion better, than their newer releases.
After seeing them at a local punk show, this is their only album that really hits on that adrenaline.
A diamond in the rough that is ska-core... and hey, Krillin's on the cover........2006-03-27
Going back to my high school days, I used to love this album, and somehow it crossed the nation from its California home to my Alabama one and changed the way I looked at horn sections in punk bands. I then went from one ska band to the other, this was 1996, and then it blew up that summer, with Reel Big Fish and the Bosstones getting airplay on MTV. Then every hack in hacksville loved ska, but no one ever really picked up on this band. And now, looking back over a sea of music I have listened to and the styles of music I prefer now, this particular album, along with Let's Go Bowling's Mr. Twist, are the only ska constants I keep in rotation. I also noticed later that the bald character on the cover is none other than Krillin of Dragonball Z fame with a Saiya-jin suit on. That right there was ahead of the curb as Dragonball Z didn't catch on over here for another four years.
This is one of my favorite cd's.......2003-10-25
This cd kicks ass! I love every song! A must have if you're into ska/punk.
The best VGS album EVER!!!!!.......1999-09-17
If you are at all questioning which VGS CD to buy, make it "Who Is This Is?"! This is VGS' peak! No other ska/punk/indie band can compare to VGS' sound on this CD. If you have any doubts just check out the sample of Insubordination. Just get it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

The best of the best.......2006-11-02
If you like funk/disco this is the best you can get.
Luther Vandross has the greatest voice, and the remix of "Searching" is really great.
By it..........
Quite The Classic!.......2006-10-03
This album has always brought a smile to my place. The first track is "A Lover's Holiday", one of my top ten favourite songs of all time. Jocelyn Brown sings the lead (credited as Jocelyn Shaw on this particular album) and it's a perfect fit of music and voice. The production on this song is fascinating. The vocals, especially, are hard to describe. At times, it sounds like there's more than two Jocelyns in the leading role, but maybe not. There's a certain echo to the vocals, but not like from a mountain or inside a tunnel. Just very different. The lesbian party track "It's A Girl's Affair" is fun and innocently naughty. "Angel In My Pocket" has a lead vocal by, again, Ms. Brown that is, not suprisingly, a tour-de-force performance. Just gorgeous.
Then there's the tracks "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching." Luther Vandross handles the lead vocals beautifully on these two lovely tracks. "Searching" was a rather unique sound for the dancefloors of 1980. It's beat is not the typical four-on-the-floor beat of many dance hits of the era. But many DJ's of the time were more than happy to invest the time to mix this tune into their club playlist.
The last track of the album was the techno precursor instrumental "The End", which is one of those fun sounding songs that demands to be heard with the headphones on. Sure, it was the end of the album, but not for great music to come from these musicians. (The stunning "Miracles" would be released the following year.)
This cd belongs in the collection of any serious dance music fan.
Simply wonderful!
The start of a brilliant career for Luther Vandross!!.......2004-12-29
I remember this album from my high school days. The dance floor filled up once the DJ played the track, "Love's Holiday". I loved that song so much, I wound up buying the LP. The album will remind you of the group, "Chic" minus the signature Nile Rodgers' guitar. But clearly the best thing about this album is the vocal power of Luther Vandross!! The songs "Searching" & "The Glow of Love" were the best songs I've ever heard up to that point in my life. This is really a great CD and the start of a brilliant solo career for Vandross.
Before the Labels, Pure Soul.......2003-07-29
If your looking to replace your vinyl vers. This is the one to buy. Same as the LP .It don't get better then this.
Good and strong concept album but the best came later........2003-07-03
This was among 1980's most well-received disco albums and "A Lover's Holiday" shall forever remain one of the decade's best dance hits. Luther Vandross did lead vocals on the hit title track and "Searching". A nice album but 1981's "Miracles" was much better.
