5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-04-04

I'm not a particularly big country fan, but not only does this CD have great sentimental value for me, but it truly has great songs! There's not one I don't like. Still, I've tried to put them in the order that I like them best. Of course, that's difficult and some may be interchangeable depending on my mood.

Shadow Face--I love this song.
Heaven Can't Be Found--Same here.
Practice What I Preach--Good advice song.
Thanks A Lot--Cute. And sad. ^^
What It Boils Down To--'Tis great.
Buck Naked--LOL. This song is really great. And makes a very good point.
Keep Your Hands To Yourself--Good.
Born To Boogie--Indeed!
Young Country--I like them all, don't I?...
Honky Tonk Women--Yup, yup...

So basically, it's an all-around winner! Good for listening to continuously.

5 out of 5 stars Great mix of songs.......2004-03-19

As ever, Hank has written several brilliant original songs and added a few well-chosen covers - some country, some blues, a lot of rock - in short, a typical Hank album full of great songs.

My favorite song here is Young country, a mid-tempo country song that features several singers who were then (1987) considered to be the future of country music. Highway 101, Keith Whitley and T Graham Brown all achieved significant success over a short period but did not sustain it. Steve Earle is still doing well but not as a country singer. Marty Stuart was also reasonably successful for a few years. Butch Baker and Dana McVicker never made it. So Hank was wrong if he thought that these guests represented the future of country music, but nobody could have predicted the number of new stars that would emerge in 1989 and 1990.

As a contrast to Young country, in which Hank extols the virtues of mixing country with rock and blues, he covers Thanks a lot, a song originally recorded by Ernest Tubb, a traditional country singer of a bygone age. Country fans should also enjoy Heaven can't be found, a ballad of the type that we expect George Jones to sing, as well as the reflective songs, What it boils down to and Shadow face.

There are a number of hard rocking songs here including the title track, Honky tonk women (a cover of the Rolling Stones classic), Keep your hands to yourself (a cover of the biggest hit by the Georgia Satellites) and Buck naked. The closing track, Practice what I preach, is one of Hank's trademark songs in which he tells it like it is.

If you are interested in collecting Hank's albums, this should be high on your list.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Hank gold.......2002-04-18

This is more of the Rockin' Randall hank, with some good covers of Rolling Stones songs (Honky Tonk Woman) and other great songs.
there is a couple of country songs like the Tubb cover (Thanks A lot) but for the most part this is pure rock.

And as always hank is at the top of his game with this one, if you like hank then get this CD NOW! the price alone screams buy me.
if your new to Hank jr this is a good starting point, since there is no duds on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Bocephus is the king !.......1999-10-15

Hannk is a true master of his craft. He rocks hard and is a model for all rock and rollers. Hank Williams, Jr is marketed wrong, he is a Rock icon and the music in this album exmplifies that

5 out of 5 stars Grand Funk's BEST!.......2006-07-09

Grand Funk had many great albums, but none of them equals Born To Die. It is simply a fantastic album and even after all these years the songs hold up. (Dues is my personal favorite Grand Funk song of all time.) Every one of the songs on this album is excellent.

The true GRF fan needs only a few of their CDs:

1) Grand Funk Live - a must have

2) We're An American Band - for obvious reasons

3) Born To Die - see above

4) Caught In The Act - one of the best live albums of all time

5) .... um... that's it.. there is no number 5 unless maybe one of the retrospective CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Funk were never better then this!.......2005-11-04

One of the best CDs by Grand Funk Railroad, hard to believe this was overlooked by most of their fans. Radio charged hits ruled, and since no songs were strongly promoted on the radio, fans did not respond overwhelmingly to this release. After all, Sally was not the most catchy of the GFR singles. Locomotion, Footstompin Music, Some Kind Of Wonderful, We're An American Band, etc sold albums galore (no matter what the overall content of the album was). But of all their overall records, this was one of the best. The guitar work is stunning, the songwriting is TOP NOTCH here. It was sad that album and CD were not available for almost 15 years. Since my vinyl wore out a long time ago, I finally picked up a Russian bootleg many years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. NOW finally, they have released this great CD again with bonus songs, and remastered quality. If your a Grand Funk fan and never discovered this one before, do yourself a favor and order Born To Die. You won't regret it I promise!

5 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS BY THE QUARTET FUNK.......2004-12-14

I will never understand why this album sold very poorly. It had excellent songs that were going along with the newer style of the 1970s rock and roll music. My only complaint is that I think CRAIG FROST should have played a grand acoustic piano instead of the newer type of pianos. MARK FARNERS' "TALK TO THE PEOPLE," "MR POLITICIAN," and the title track are my favorite songs with outstanding arrangements on this album. The fast paced "MR. POLITICIAN" has an excellent guitar and organ opening riffs and vocalsby MARK and the band, "TALK TO THE PEOPLE" has excellent piano riffs by CRAIG, sax by WET WILLIE'S singer JIMMY HALL, guitar riffs by MARK, and outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, and the title track (written about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident) is an outstanding beginner with the piano intro, outstanding vocals by MARK and the band, organ and guitar riffs. On the other hand, it was a shame about MARK'S cousin who died in a motorcycle accident. Meanwhile, the arrangement of "DUES" with the guitar solos, clavinet and organ riffs, the bass guitar, and DON'S lead vocal and drum playing reminds me of PINK FLOYD'S "ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PART 2." and the guitar solo on GOOD THINGS that features excellent vocals by MARK, piano riffs, and harmony vocals also reminds me of the signiture sound of PETER FRAMPTON'S guitar from "FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE". The arrangement of the soulful SALLY with MARK'S lead vocal, harmony vocals, the piano riffs, and harmonica by JIMMI HALL reminds me of either CHICAGO or JEFFERSON STARSHIP that later featured MICKEY THOMAS. The piano intro, drums, vocals, guitar, bass guitar, and organ riffs on DON'S TAKE ME are excellent, and so is his I FELL FOR YOUR LOVE that also features excellent vocals, guitar and organ riffs. At first, I thought that DON'S LOVE IS DYIN', also featuring excellent vocals, drums, bass guitar, guitar and piano riffs, was about the tentions developing between that band's main songwriters MARK and DON over what types of songs to write about. The group written instrumental GENEVIEVE (I have not listened to the live rehearsal version yet) is excellent too. Furthermore, the unreleased "BARE NAKED WOMAN" that is sung by MARK has some great rhythm and blues that recaptured the psychodelic days for the power trio GFR. I love this album a whole lot better than "GOOD SINGIN' GOOD PLAYIN'." Although a majority may or do not agree, I believe MARK wrote some excellent songs, if not outstanding, on this album like on "ALL THE GIRLS IN THE WORLD BEWARE."

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

4 out of 5 stars Standard George Rock & Roll.......2007-06-05

George Thorogood and The Destroyers released this record in 1988, and I bought it and still own it on vinyl. (I probably need to purchase the CD, hunh?) This was George still at really the height of his popularity - the mid 1980s -- and he was producing his own brand of standard rock and roll that was actually being played on the radio, which was some kind of miracle. If I'm not mistaken, two songs had videos that were played on MTV. I specifically remember the video for "Treat Her Right."

This CD is a rocker with tons of highlights. Serious rock and roll includes the reworked Elmore James tune "Shake Your Moneymaker" (an absolute pounder), "You Talk Too Much," and "Born to Be Bad," basically the sequel to "Bad to the Bone," his signature song that everyone knows. Other really good tracks that I like are "I'm Ready" (a Fats Domino tune), "Treat Her Right," and "I Really Like Girls," in which George proclaims his love of the fairer sex by repeating that he "really really really really really really likes girls," and then tells you what he likes about them, in case you were wondering. As usual, George reworks other old blues tunes like "Smokestack Lightning" and "Highway 49" (both Howlin' Wolf penned songs), a Chuck Berry song "You Can't Catch Me," and writes his own new standards, like "I Really Like Girls" and the absolutely hilarious now classic "You Talk Too Much," which any straight man in the world who's married or who's ever had a garrulous girlfriend (and who hasn't) can relate to. This is a solid album with no low points. It's one of his best, and probably one of his most commercial, but it's still George's very basic bare bones rock and roll. By the way, if you like George at all, you have to see him live because that's where he really shines. His live shows are still as good as anybody. He's a workhorse. I've seen him several times over the years and he's still great.

3 out of 5 stars A solid offering..........2007-02-06

Not the best Thorogood album out there, but it has a few really good songs, and everything is classic Thorogood. I recommend it for people who like Thorogood but want to hear something different than all the popular songs.

4 out of 5 stars Bad to the Bone ---Badder than Metal.......2007-02-01

I can't believe there's only one other review out here for a truly outstanding rocking blues album by one of the best rocking blues bands there is.

It's a shame old George doesn't get the props musically that he deserves, but I guess blues journeymen are used to that. I hope he's made lots of bucks off the royalties from those commercials his music is featured in (Sam Adams, pickup trucks).

One of the things I've noticed about GT & the D's recordings over the years is there are usually 3 or four great songs on each one. Back in the old vinyl days, that wasn't enough to assure commercial success. But nowadays, with music down loads, you can pick the tunes you want for your personalized playlist.

My favorite four on this disc are: ' Shake Your Moneymaker', 'You Talk Too Much', 'Born to Be Bad', and 'I Really Like Girls'. If you have a convertable, this is top-down-full blast-roaring-down-the-highway music. If you don't have the car, 'Born to Be Bad' also is served well with beer and barbeque at parties, or boogie-down forest preserve picnic-fests.

Hey you metal-heads. Try this on for size. Definitely designed to get you rockin'.

5 out of 5 stars Party time! Hard-rockin' good-time music........2005-04-15

George Thorogood acquired a reputation early on as a barroom band, suited for places where people go out and dance and drink and talk loud and laugh. His critics say this is his downfall; his fans say -- that's what he does best! This disc is a real smoker, jumping right out with "Shake Your Money Maker", then before you can sit down he launches his own song, "You Talk Too Much", and then burns through T-Bone Burnett's "Highway 49." A couple songs later George assures us, in Fats Domino's words, that he's "ready, willing and able," and you know that's true. He then tells the secret motive behind just about all his songs in his composition "I Really Like Girls." I think we guessed that, and even those of us who are married can appreciate the sentiment and the energy behind it. There is no "deep" meaning here, except that feeling alive and lively is the essence of life. So crank up the volume and have a good time. It's easy with this disc playing.

David Bowie's glammed-out Ziggy Stardust may have inspired much British critical hype at the dawn of the '70s, but it was Marc Bolan's T. Rex whose infectious blend of rock roots and mystic troubadour conceits were the era's biggest teen-frenzy pop phenomena. Ringo Starr was so enamored of "T. Rexstasy" that he set about making a loose documentary on Bolan and band, one whose loose flights of improvisational cinema seem as dizzy as they do substance-fueled. This double-disc soundtrack to Born to Boogie's painstakingly restored and expanded DVD release is a fascinating, warts-and-all slice of pop history, mixing concert performances of key hits like "Jeepster," "Get It On," and "Hot Love" with live-in-the-studio rave-ups of "Tutti Frutti" and "Children of the Revolution," featuring backing by Ringo and Elton John. The "Tea Party Medley" is one strange soirée of hits, while disc two presents the only complete recording of a T. Rex show, capturing the band's triumphant Wembley homecoming on March 18, 1972, in all its screaming teen glory. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant performances, dated fantasy footage.......2006-02-09

Marc Bolan was an incredible performer.
This DVD is the best you can get to show his performances.
However the scenes with Ringo just are not funny any more.
They are however interesting for historic reasons.
As a production for DVD this is a must get, great sound, picture and lot's of bonus material.
A must get if you're a fan of 70s rock

      5 out of 5 stars Quite a "documentary.".......2005-07-23

In all honesty I can't see this being considered a documentary seeing as about half of it is comprised of improvised "hippie" sketches. However, that's not to say these sketches are not entertaining or interesting. On the contrary. They're devilishly self indulgent, but that just makes them more fun to watch (even if it's anyones guess as to what they mean). During the concert, Marc is in top form on all the tracks with the exception of "Get it On" in which he just sounds off most of the time. Considering he had already given a full concert earlier that day, it's easy to see that he was obviously getting pretty tired. He also gives some outstanding performances with Ringo Starr on drums and Elton John on piano. These were some of my favorites, as Elton's piano adds a whole new element to Marc's roots rock n' roll.

What really makes this particular DVD so essential is how well it has been remastered. There's even a special feature that shows the process Born to Boogie went through to finally end up as clear as it did. And boy is it clear. You're not going to find a clearer live T.rex performance anywhere.

Definitely recommended to anyone interested in the band, but also to classic rock fans who really have no idea what T.Rex was all about outside of "Bang a Gong (Get it On)."

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent remastering, and a great live T.Rex 1972 concert!.......2005-06-10

I've been waiting for this for a long time. The movie "Born to Boogie" which chronicles the rise of Marc Bolan to superstar status in the U.K. was never released in the US. Marc's success peaked around the time of the original 1972 movie directed by Ringo Starr, and this is a great value. Disc one contains the soundtrack of the movie with a superb earlier take of "Children of the Revolution" with Elton John on piano and Ringo playing drums. But disc two is truly the treasure featuring the full length Wembley concert (3/18/72)which has been lovingly remastered with surprisingly good sound throughout the set. The concert opens with a stunning version of "Cadillac" and concludes with a very electric version of "Summertime Blues". This is an excellent cd and helps clarify what "T.Rexstasy" was all about. Too bad that America just didn't get it. Now they can. As a T.Rex fanatic for 30 years, this is truly essential. Now, I need the DVD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Standard George Rock and Roll.......2005-01-22

Okay, how the hell I'm the first to review this album is a mystery to me, but here it is. George Thorogood and The Destroyers released this record in 1988, and I bought it and still own it on vinyl. (I probably need to purchase the CD, hunh?) This was George still at really the height of his popularity - the mid 1980s -- and he was producing his own brand of standard rock and roll that was actually being played on the radio which was some kind of miracle. If I'm not mistaken, two songs had videos that were played on MTV. I specifically remember the video for "Treat Her Right."

This CD is a rocker with tons of highlights. Serious rock and roll includes "Shake Your Moneymaker," an absolute pounder, "You Talk Too Much," and "Born to Be Bad," basically the sequel to "Bad to the Bone," his signature song that everyone knows. Other really good tracks that I like are "I'm Ready," "Treat Her Right," and "I Really Like Girls," in which George proclaims his love of the fairer sex by repeating that he "really really really really really really likes girls," and then tells you what he likes about them, in case you were wondering. As usual, George reworks old blues tunes like "Smokestack Lightning," and writes his own new standards, like "I Really Like Girls" and the absolutely hilarious now classic "You Talk Too Much," which any straight man in the world who's married or who's ever had a garrulous girlfriend (and who hasn't) can relate to.
