A Disc Which is Pure Delight!.......2004-03-02

This cd will lift your spirits from the first song right through to the end. I loved every song, even though I was listening to many of them for the first time. This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Try it, you'll like it!

Excellent Sampler Disc From Important Series!.......2000-01-30

If you have always wanted to try out some of Marco Polo's British Light Music series, here is your chance, and for only pennies. This CD whets your appetite for investigating the rest of the series. At first, it seems strange that the orchestras would not be very idiomatic for this music, but the conductor makes these performances shine.There are a few favorites but many pieces that I have never heard before and are welcome in any collection. My favorites are "Sleepy Lagoon", "Dam Busters March", and "Knightsbridge March".These are by Eric Coates, the most famous person on these discs (at least to American Listeners). Fans of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops will recognize "In A Persian Market" with the chanting "Bakseesh, Bakseesh, Allah". Arthur Benjamin is represented by the Jamaican Rhumba,his popular hit (although we need more recordings of his serious music.) Edward German is represented by one work,but it would have been nice to have the Henry VIII dances on here also. You will also recognize "Sleepy Lagoon" and "Roses of Picardy" because they were turned into pop songs in America. Try this one out-it is fun!

Best collection of Classical there is........1999-03-15

For the young and old this is the best listening enjoyment you can get from Classical music. The new upbeat rhythm with the classic sounds of old will bring delight to all that like this field of music. You will find yourself tapping your toes as you listen to the mixes of the best pieces of classics mixed together with a swinging back up rhythm. The old become new to brighten up the calming sounds classical. No more falling asleep to Bach or Beethoven. You will be up moving once the sounds reach you and show you that the olds never die.

Bliss and Elgar.......2007-04-07

I found this music on LP in the late 1960's and it has always one of my favorite discs. Bliss was Master of the King's (Queen's) Musick like Elgar and produced occasional music for royal events like his more famous predecessor. His Welcome the Queen sounds like Elgar's Sixth Pomp and Circumstance March so close is it in style. It has a catchy central tune and sticks in your brain like P&Cs 1 and 4.
Bliss's music for Things to Come is worthy of its independent concert life. The March here is its centerpiece and deservedly so, but the whole suite is alive with excitement. I recall playing it for a conductor friend some years ago, and he promptly programmed it into one of his orchestra's summer concerts.
The stereo sound may not be in the first class, and the playing of the London Symphony may not be the smoothest, but there is such spirit and swagger here that I still prefer this version of the Pomp and Circumstance Marches to all other versions. I think someone called Bliss's conducting style here 'rambustious'--- not a bad description.
Over the years, pieces of this program have appeared on compact disc, but the Autralians have finally put it back together again.
Buy it. If you love Elgar, you will not be disappointed!

A "must have" for any music lover........2006-12-24

My first taste of Bliss was "Welcome the Queen," often played on a local Los Angeles classical station in the 1970s. Full of Elgarian bounce and Bliss' own sharp orchestration, "Welcome the Queen" has a magisterial sweep that's impossible to resist. And it's nearly impossible to find this piece (for years, this was the only recording).

Bliss' original film music for "Things To Come" (1936) has aged far better than the film it supported. A suite was fashioned by Bliss himself; actually "Things to Come" suites have become a classical cottage industry, with several available, no two quite alike (which is why I have them all). But this is Bliss' own suite and its gorgeous, filled with lush, even aching melodies, martial rhythms, and bold colors. One of the first film scores to prove that good movie music does not need the movie to survive.

The Bliss works alone would make this a "must have," but the Pomp and Circumstance marches are just plain terrific. There are equally good readings of these by other orchestras, but there are none better.

Sound quality (this is a 1950s recording) is decent.
