Album Description

In his latest recording, John King pays tribute to the music of Na Lani Eha, the Heavenly Four, Hawaiian royalty who were well known music lovers and gifted composers. Through their social and political influence, David Kalakaua (1836-91), Lydia Kamakaeha Paki (Liliuokalani, 1838-1917), Miriam Likelike (1851-87), and William Pitt Leleiohoku (1854-77) helped to create and popularize a new musical idiom that synthesized traditional Hawaiian poetics with New England-style hymnody.

The sixteen tracks of Royal Hawaiian Music include pieces written by, or dedicated to, the Heavenly Four in the late 19th century, arranged and performed on solo ukulele.

Like John King's wonderful CD of Bach for unaccompanied ukulele, this CD literally SINGS. This time, it's music written by members of Hawaii's royal families. Much of the music is very pretty and King's readings of the music are masterful. John King has to be the foremost "classical" ukulele player on the planet, and this CD only enhances that reputation.

I'm always so happy to hear beautiful ukulele music. This should be considered a classic recording if it isn't already. It is so well done. I would strongly encourage those with a similar love to buy this CD.

Music fit for a King.......2005-08-15

Performed by a King. John King. Since his initial release of a disc of Bach solos performed on unaccompanied ukulele, King has published two collections of ukulele music, with attendant CDs, and this, a regal recording of Hawaiian crown jewels, Royal Hawaiian Music. Chosen from compositions written by or dedicated to Hawaiian royalty of the 1800s, this CD is simply sumptuous. Music making of the highest order. The listener is never aware of "the man behind the curtain," much less told to pay no attention to him or his ukulele. What flows forth from the sound system speakers is music unencumbered by thoughts of instrumental inadequacies overcome by technical triumphs (of which there are plenty). It's just beautiful music, beautifully performed.

Delve deeply into the expertly written liner notes (by King) and one learns of the tragic and triumphant origins of some of the most poignant-and under-rated-music of the late-nineteenth century. The haunting `Ka Ipo Lei Manu' written by Queen Kapiolani upon learning of the death of her husband, King Kalakaua. And the celebratory `Kalakaua March' written in honor of the king's visit to San Francisco in the 1870s. I doubt if you can find a recording of the original piano version of this march or the several others Mr. King plays that were written by Henry Berger and published as piano solos in his collection `Mele Hawaii' in the 1880s.

There are several fine ukulele virtuosi before the public today, but I doubt any could handle this repertoire. Their styles are too idiosyncratic. King seems to be quietly building a foundation of repertoirial and technical benchmarks future generations of players can aspire to. Above all, he has the temperament of a classicist: his tone is perfection, interpretation faultless; the music speaks to us. I find it astonishing to admit, considering the instrument and the origins of the music, but this is transcendent music wonderfully, lovingly made. Buy it. Aloha.

Great companion to the book.......2007-02-25

I'm a big fan of graphic novels and I also really appreciate ambiant music, so this is a real winner for me. I think the music really reflects the theme of first love in wintertime. It sounds a little like Moby's "Ambiant" mixed with David Byrne's "Lead us not into temptation". The first track is my favorite, and sets the tone for the rest of the album (and the book, for that matter).

If you love the sounds of the wind through grass or through trees this cd has what your looking for. Not every track are wind sounds but there are a few that have nice soothing sounds to sleep with.

Tight And Clear With Fresh Ideas from the Debut.......2003-08-29

"Ames" was written, recorded and produced by one man, the band's lead member. You can hear this, not just in the lo-fi recording but in the fact that the flow of ideas is lacking.
But really, don't worry about it. Because "Polk" is going to turn heads, whether you were a fan from the beginning or not. Featuring talented friends from other bands, such as Death Cab for Cutie, the sophomore effort is an over all improvement from the first. The songs are more complete, recorded with more shine and crisp detail. The album, packaged in a very cool digipack, offers better pictures that relate with the band's "desert rock" sound that they have further emphasized this time round. There are the very cool instrumental tracks (Nova Prt. 1, Somber Reptiles), the quicker paced accessible 'songs' ( distance is the sun, area, the swimmer, chemistry, photograph the ancestors) and the bulk of the rest lie in the simple acoustics with ambience taking us to the scorching desert in between songs. Some could call the tracks in between the songs 'filler', but like myself, don't be surprised if you're caught humming their choruses or punchlines long after listening to the album.

thats pretty much it, i liked super sound racing better. this still gets five stars because everything that zeke does gets five stars. zeke taking the bus - five stars. zeke buying vegitables at the market - five stars. zeke folding laundry - five stars. see what i mean. but anyway, flat tracker gets five stars because zeke did it. but zeke did it better on super sound racing.

A blast.......2006-09-22

I realize there are a lot of bands playing speed punk out there, and it may be hard to see why you should listen to Zeke. But Mr. Felchtone writes the most elegant melodies I've ever heard -- as brilliant as Nirvana's, only compressed into 20 seconds of pure joy. There's no way you can listen to this and not have fun. If you think that this might in any way be your type of music, check Zeke out.
