Editorial Reviews

Tucson Lifestyle
Seattle-based singer/songwriter Jill Cohn follows up last year's 13September6 with The Laughing Universe, a live album. It showcases her expressive voice and gift for poetic imagery. Cohn, who writes from the heart about love, loss and self-discovery, draws intricate word pictures that are intimate, yet leave room for interpretation. Standouts include the ironically titled "True Love" whose lyrics lament "Well I guess I never should've introduced you two/you can't always tell where fate hides," and "Anymore", which explores the isolation and alienation of being suddenly alone in a city. Major labels are scouting Cohn and her independent releases may soon become collector items.

5 out of 5 stars Jill Cohn equals powerful emotion!.......2001-09-11

Jill sounds so incredible live on this recording. Unfortunately I have yet to have the pleasure of seeing her live. Needless to say I can't wait. My favorite song far and away is "Promising Rainbows". It just has a certain quality about it that I can't resist. Jill's voice is so beautiful and moving. Her ability as a pianist is also featured in every song here. The song "We Know" is so wonderfully done that it gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. If you haven't heard Jill Cohn I urge you to go out and buy The Laughing Universe. Her other three albums are also very highly recommended. 13September6, Songs from the BlueBus, and The absence of moving are must haves in any music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Jill Cohn is emotionally daring without being pretentious........1999-03-31

I am David Eaton, Producer of Jill Cohn's THE LAUGHING UNIVERSE. The fact that this record was recorded as a benefit concert is a testimant, in and of itself, to Jill's empathic nature. This nature is reflected in her self exploration, and emphasized by the stark solitude of, the solo performances of the songs contained herein. Jill is gifted with the ability to explore issues and, to the benefit of all of us, portray the pain and conquest comon to the human experience - she is a voice for many who remain silent in their struggles.

As you look at Jill's work, you will find equal acceptance of success and failings - the balance of life - both taken from a delightful and most thoughtful perspective. I am sure that everyone has something to gain from Jill's art.

We recorded THE LAUGHING UNIVERSE with one goal in mind, to make an album that would capture Jill's emotional intesity and move people. With the tremendous sales and its contribution to empowering Jill's non-stop touring, I am very proud to be associated with this record. For even without the sales success that it has enjoyed, we achieved our goal. We captured an innocent and potentially vulnerable moment in the sure-to-be-long career of one of the West Coast's brightest stars.

Thank you to the many people who have expressed such wonderful experiences from owning THE LAUGHING UNIVERSE.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated, to Say the Least.......2007-05-16

In 1999, I bought this album in the used bin at a local record store. I took one listen and decided to store it in my closet for eternity. In 2001 I moved away and found this album in there. Those few years had changed my taste in music. I was influenced by various genres of music. I found an appreciation for electronic music beyond what I had before. The fact that ¡Laughing Us! had an original album fusing Electronic and Hard Rock changed my world completely. I was introduced to all kinds of things through them, through the love of their music. The year is now 2007, and I still haven't stopped listening to this album. I recommend it to everyone. It is the most underrated album I have ever come across.

5 out of 5 stars Why oh why is there not more Laughing Us?.......2003-12-07

I came across this CD in a music resale shop 5 years ago. It was a coincidence that would change my life forever. This is one that never gets taken out of rotation and I NEVER get tired of listening to it. Seriously one of the most underrated CD's EVER, and as the years go by I can't help but wonder why we haven't again heard from these, err.... guys.

Quite a few of these songs are tongue-in-cheek... the lyrics never cease to bring a smile to my face. "Goin' Off" and its anthem-like "Take no prisoners, man.... grab it while ya still can" motivates me when I'm stuck in traffic at the end of a long day. "Le Boo" contains the greatest pick-up line I've ever heard: "Ready, steady, go - I want ya to be my ho." And then of course the hilarious "More Than a Man" whose lyrics I dare not reprint here.

Comes complete with a remake of the quintessential "Relax", by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. My husband shakes his head whenever I pop this one in, but begrudgingly admits it has grown on him.

Take their advice, grab it while ya still can.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-08-30

I usually don't comment on CD's but this is an exceptional CD.
I bought the CD a few years ago, in LA, at the Wiskey A-Go-Go, after seeing them live.
Simply, it is one of my all time favorite CD's.
Just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly creative cross for guitar and electronica lovers.......1999-08-14

This album fluidly combines electronica/dance music, and hard rock. Driving beats and heavy guitar are cut nicely with groove at its finest. It will suprise you. This album is a must have for someone who cares about the variety of their music collection. I promise.
