There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

5 out of 5 stars just listen... mmmkay!??!.......2006-12-15

The first song is ab-fab and Billy M.'s vocals run up and down your spine with a chorus that will make you want to hit "REPEAT" over and over and over again. But... Who cares? The album starts off with an amazing peice, and then, this short little gem of an album, finishes soft and sweet. Kind of like, well... I am not exactly sure, but, it does. And it is, good/.
Look, I can be some one you can trust if your looking for something new, or maybe you'd like to hear something other than "cookie-cutter".

You got it, dude. ah, er..ma'am.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Amazon.com.......2002-11-14

Myself and a few other teachers have been searching the globe for this CD. We attended a training session and the gal presenting performed almost every song. However, she neglected to supply us with ordering information.
The entire audience was singing, moving, dancing, laughing and rockin' out. It was so much fun! It's hard to believe something this much FUN can be educational too! I highly recommend this CD for pre-school-lower elementary teachers. It's also ideal for home use. I plan on sending a newsletter to my parents informing them of this great buy.

The kids will sing along and ask for this one over and over again. They love it. As a Kindergarten teacher I love Rock n' Roll Songs That Teach because it helps with important academic skills while it entertains my students. The Singing In The Rain song is perfect for those rainy day blues. It's uplifting rhythm brightens any day. I purchased the CD just for this song and was pleasantly surprised by all the tracks.

    Album Description

It's been said that Memphis is mentioned in more song titles than any other city. On In The Mood For Memphis you'll hear a diverse musical testimonial from some of Memphis' most dynamic voices. For the first time ever, a CD has been compiled celebrating the rock and blues Mecca of the world with 16 songs, each with Memphis in the title. From the mainstream "Walking In Memphis" performed by Eddie Harrison to the underground sounds of Mud Boy & the Neutrons' "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again," In The Mood For Memphis is filled with soul-pleasing, groove-controlling, guaranteed satisfaction.

Powerful and charismatic singers Gary Johns and Susan Marshall each perform different versions of the title track. Don McMinn's funky "Memphis In May" sets the mood for an exquisite rendition of "Memphis In June" by jazz diva Joyce Cobb. With Delbert McClinton on harmonica, Dan Penn's "Memphis Women and Chicken" is smooth, Southern and irresistible. You'll also hear Holly Shelton's sultry interpretation of W.C. Handy's "Memphis Blues" (followed by a haunting instrumental with The W.C. Handy Preservation Band). Songwriter Bob Cheevers adds his irresistible "Memphis Till Monday" exclaiming the virtues of good ole Memphis barbecue and fun. Gusto jumps in with a lively version of Lyle Lovett's "I've Been To Memphis." Other highlights include Daddy Mack Orr and Billy Gibson on the Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers classic "Memphis," the soulful sounds of the Memphis All-Stars on their feel-good original "Lovely Memphis Day," and The McCarty-Hite Project's "Memphis Town." Cult rockers The Delta Queens include their raw, but fiercely independent "Memphis (Highway 72)," as the almost final track.

Patrick Dodd concludes the CD in a reflective tone with "Memphis Keeps Rolling On," a gospel-tinged pop ballad that examines the struggles and triumphs of Memphis and its legacy.

Since 1992, Inside Sounds has focused on producing the best of Memphis, from blues to alternative rock, and is the parent company of the critically acclaimed Memphis Archives label.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Memphis moods.......2004-02-18

16 songs of and about Memphis - in fact, Memphis is in the title of each and every song.
I was a wary of this album at first but the more I thought about it, the more I understood it. Memphis' diverse musical situation needs to be celebrated and Dattel has compiled a carefully conceived and varied selection here.

Some songs will be recognized, some won't. Some were done in Memphis (most of them) and some in other places. Some songs are old, some songs are new, but for the most part it's a blues album, and since it's from Memphis, even the weak cuts are strong.

Susan Marshall's "In the Mood for Memphis" begins the album and seven songs later, we hear vocalist Gary Johns' version of the same song. Longtime player Don McMinn tells about "Memphis in May" and Joyce Cobb tells us all about "Memphis in June" in her unique.

Two songs jumped out at me and made the album worth the time - Jim Dickinson's Mud Boy and the Neutrons hammering out his friend Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again). " It's done with verve and vigor and I've always liked Jim's voice.

Eddie Harrison's version of "Walking in Memphis" is the best version of that Grammy-winning song I've ever heard. I remember seeing and hearing Eddie Harrison and the ShortCuts 35 years ago and thought they were great, and he's an even better singer now.
From beginning to end, the musicianship quality is top-notch and Dattel and company have an excellent CD here. If you're already from Memphis, go get this CD and celebrate your town. If you're not from Memphis, come on down! There's magic here.

4 out of 5 stars For fans of thoughtful Portland pop-punk-pop.......2005-08-18

This appeals to me as a long-time Heatmiser fan. Neil Gust was of course overshadowed by his band-mate and fellow singer-songwriter Elliot Smith, who was simultaneously pursuing already a solo career on Cavity Search and Kill Rock Stars labels. But Gust, taking often gay themes and working them into Heatmiser's power-pop-punk structures, continues to evolve leading this Portland trio, which keeps tracing the templates Gust (and Smith, even if the latter resisted them) established together as co-frontmen of Heatmiser. This album sounded only so-so when I first played it. It will not exactly leap out at you. You should get used to it slowly, coming back to it in a variety of moods. I returned to it after a long lapse and found that I was ready to appreciate its understated tones and offhand pace better.

This 2002 album follows "No Memory," but progresses smoother. It seems to have been more carefully prepared for than the restless debut which followed Heatmiser's demise more rapidly. The effort in this album, as its plaintive title suggests, may be not as widely heard as Smith's recordings, but admirers of their city's other 90's bands such as Quasi--whose Sam Coombes (ex-Heatmiser) appears on one track, Pond, & Heatmiser should find much to like--as should fans of Smith's more aggressive (if far less Beatlesque and baroque in No. 2) styles. Joanna Bolme, later of (S. Malkmus &) the Jicks and co-compiler of Smith's posthumous album, appears as co-"recorder"; the fourth Heatmiser member, Tony Lash, mixed the sharp & clear pressing.

It reminds me at times of Bob Mould vs. Husker Du, as in Sugar he attempted to marry the rawer pop-punk edge with more traditional song stylings and lyrics about relationships and yearning into a catchy delivery that neither insults the listener's intelligence nor strains to be overly sophisticated "college/alternative" self-referential ghettoized rock as a category too insular to be lastingly appealing as song craftsmanship rather than the exorcising of one's inner demons.

Mould and Gust contend with issues smartly, packaging them into three-minute messages that convey themselves smartly, yet, at their best, in a humbler persona than a strutting rock poseur. While Mould's critical acclaim, like Smith's, has dominated post-Husker and post-Heatmiser efforts by Gust (contrast those of Grant Hart), I trust that Gust and his band-mates will keep remembering that there's a loyal following for their brand of solid punk-pop as we mature alongside them, and that the demand for their thoughful blend of energy and introspection keeps up as we await a third album from No. 2...

          Album Description

Out In The Community is the powerful debut from Portland, Oregon's The Quags, a band that builds upon the greatest rock grooves from the 1970's. Co-produced and engineered by Eric Furlong (Sunset Valley, 44 Long), it was mostly recorded live with classic songs that bring to mind the best moments of The Faces, The Rolling Stones, Ziggy Stardust era David Bowie, and The Kinks. More contemporary references might be found with artists like Whiskeytown and White Stripes.

An exciting electric album, energetic rough and ready with a sense of musical history but channeled for the 21st century. On Out In The Community, the band is joyful, raucous, and fiery playing with equal parts musical precision and reckless abandonment.

The Quags play glam rock channeled through the same plaid shirt rock n' roll party spirit that fueled The Replacements. With smart heartfelt lyrics found in songs like "Danna Was An Artist" and "Living Hell", singer/guitarist/songwriter Dennis Mitchell sounds like equal parts Ray Davies and NRBQ's Terry Adams.

The Quags' Out In The Community is an album which should appeal to any rock music fan who ever enjoyed Let It Bleed, Every Picture Tells A Story, and Muswell Hillbillies.

This is an album that taps into the brainy boozer's penchant for great rock n' roll This is the album you'll crave for the next roadtrip.
