Essential Anthology.......2006-03-02

Despite their nearly 30-year career, Magnum is still largely unknown and criminally underappreciated. Which is a shame, since their unique blend of pomp rock, prog, and AOR should make them a big hit with fans of classic groups like Queen, Kansas, Jethro Tull, and Journey. It seems like each of Magnum's studio albums was released by a different record label. Some have been remastered, some haven't. That's where a good compilation comes in handy.

There are a surprising number of Magnum collections out there, but the 3-disc box set Long Days, Black Nights: the Alternative Anthology is by far the best. It is a bit more expensive than the single-disc "greatest hits" releases, but is worth every penny. This career-spanning collection contains 50 tracks and nearly 4 hours of music. There is a good mix of studio and live material, a nice booklet with a band history and discography, and best of all; the songs have all been remastered. Until a record label gets around to remastering and reissuing this worthy band's entire back catalog, Long Days, Black Nights is the best way to experience Magnum. Castle, who issued this anthology, had great success with their Uriah Heep reissues. Perhaps they'll take the hint and give the Magnum albums the attention they deserve.

Excellent compilation, but............2002-10-26

Long Days Black Nights is most definitely the ultimate Magnum compilation, and it does justice to the band's longtime brilliant career. My only complaint is that one of their greatest songs (Don't wake the Lion) is not included in the set. Other than that, this triple CD is worth buying. You will not be dissappointed!.

Terrific deal on this 3cd package! Magnum's music is solid rock&roll which brings to mind(for lack of a better comparison) a blending of KANSAS,QUEEN and JETHRO TULL.Kansas for it's progressive rock structure; vocal harmony pomp ala Queen (vaguely), and Tull flourishes such as baroque flute which underscores decent lyrics of a mythical-folkish bent.
Finding similar comparisons is highly subjective, and what gets repeated on your cd player can be a guilty pleasure (the other reviewer refered to a diet of Deep Purple and Led Zep). So I think its safe to say that MAGNUM has its own unique "sound" worth a listen.The packaging is very well concieved with cool art designs housing 3 cds in slim see-through jewel cases, as well as adequate liner notes. You get over 3.5 hours of music on 50 tracks including album/singles and live concert recordings.

A superb collection of tunes & lyrics which will delight aging rock fans like myself. Only just discovered Magnum having spent too long repeat playing Purple & Zeppelin. if YOU aren't familiar then give them a listen. ou will not be disappointed.
