3 out of 5 stars glaring omission.......2007-02-08

Nice collection, but conspiciously missing
is his signature song: That Lucky Old Sun.

And, on this CD at least one of his best
known songs: Moonlight Gambler is a poor
ad-libbed rendition that does no justice
to the original recording on Columbia.

4 out of 5 stars I too love Jezebel........2005-10-16

The only tracks I really knew before I got this collection was the hit "Desire (come and get it)", and the two from the "Kiss Of Life" album. After numerous listens, I'm quite impressed, and the whole disc is consistently good. To my ears, they're similar to The Cult or Love & Rockets, and are a rough mix of pop/goth/rock. The earlier material here like "Bruises" is definitely more moody, yet enjoyable, while the later stuff like "Jealous" is really going for the hook-filled alt-rock sound. Both eras are great though. I'm glad "Voodoo Dollies" is in chronological order, and my current favorite songs are "Stephen", "Sweetest Thing", "Motion Of Love", and "Break The Chain". All equally strong. The last track "Who Wants To Go To Heaven?" is a nice almost sing-a-long, and a great way to end the disc. In short, if you like any of the above mentioned bands or genres, you should love Gene Loves Jezebel. Nice written history and photos as well.

5 out of 5 stars Good Jump-in Point to GLJ.......2005-01-04

GLJ is yet another example an excellent 80's post-punk band being rediscovered, though perhaps not to the extent deserved. If you've never heard them then this is probably the best place to start as it covers all of their different sounds pretty evenly. All of the songs are presented more or less chronologically and depending on your tastes you'll either gravitate toward the beginning, middle or end of the collection. Goths tend to like the 1st 2 albums which are represnted on here by the 1st 6 songs; "Bruises" is one of my favorite GLJ songs. The middle marks the transition period when they, and nearly every alternative act at the time, were shifting from the darker early sound to a more rock-oriented concept. "Heartache" and "Desire" were alt radio smashes at the time and made a name for the band. Then came the slightly harder rock feel of the songs from 'House of Dolls', tacks 11-13. The last stage of the album represents an attempt to go mainstream with "Jealous" and "Kiss of Life"... I think this stage stinks but it was fairly popular.

To understand the group it is important to look at the overall body of work and also consider the time. GLJ followed a trajectory of many postpunk bands that started a bit Goth, then moved to general alternative and perhaps dabbled a little in metal... Jezebel actually almost exactly mirrors the progression of the Cult up until about '87. Overall this is a great collection that showcases all of the band's stages and offers some bang for the buck.

4 out of 5 stars Come and get it.......2003-12-28

I had to replace my old cassettes, this album had all songs I like on it. Memorable "Desire (come and get it) was my favorite and the reason why I got interested in that band. Second favorite "Upstairs" has a nice bass loop. Third would be "Beyound doubt". "Influenza" is a cute percussion song with mostly only xylophone and keyboard. "Heartache", "Kiss of life", "Kiss of life", "Break the chain" and "Bruise" are nice songs.

They still make albums but they got too folk for my taste and voice of singer is more low tone.

5 out of 5 stars One of The Best Underrated 80's Bands.......2003-04-12

GLJ had the musical hooks, sensible lyrics, and just the right amount of thumpin' rock-goth style to standout from the rest of the crowd in the 80's. Despite their lack of proper recognition in the states, they still made a strong and lasting impression on a lot of die-hard 80's music rock fans and so-called rock album/pre-alternative stations...Tracks like Desire, 20 KillerHertz, and Suspicion are the standout tracks with hook-laden rhythms and everything else to boot !

5 out of 5 stars The Welsh twins of Goth.......2000-03-24

Not quite new wave, nor Goth, or even pop, Gene Loves Jezebel falls into that catagory of hybrid. Having been a fan for 15 years, I am forever on the hunt for c.d.s, comps, etc., and found that most are out of print, including the excellent Kiss of Life and Immigrant albums. But this collection culls the best from their six albums, including the aforementioned ones. As expected, Desire is on this c.d., but also songs from 'Promise' (Bruises, Upstairs) and 'Immigrant' (Steven). All the tracks are prime examples of how this band really was during the late eighties. My faves are Bruises, Sweetest Thing, Twenty Killer Hurts and Jealous, but overall this is the best album you could buy as an introduction to the band. You will wonder why they weren't bigger than they were!

Album Description

Buried drums, echoed guitar, and soft cries suddenly transform into a blasting romance number; the rhythm section work easily rivals that of any other early '80s post-punkers, while the almost mandolin-like arrangements on the chorus are a lovely touch. Add in the Astons' passionate lyrics to a missing love and the glammy rush of the song, and Immigrant is off and running. Like Promise, variety is part of the album's appeal, ranging from the slow punch and chanting of "Stephen" to the giddy blasts of "Worth Waiting For" (with an intentionally hilarious spoken-word break in the middle) and "Cow," Immigrant's underrated highlight. When at their most mystic and tribal, the Astons nail it more often than not; the title track connects especially well, sounding like Echo and the Bunnymen's slightly more florid cousin with an especially catchy chorus. The group isn't afraid to let humor sneak through in other areas, as they prove in naming the last three songs "The Rhino Plasty," "Deep South Wale," and "Coal Porter." That final tune is especially good, a lovedrunk remembrance of the past with evocative imagery and a lovely arrangement; its soft percussion and electric guitar are carefully filled out with piano and backing vocals. BBG. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Jewel in Their Crown . . ........2006-01-26

IMMIGRANT is by far the best album I've heard from this band. Before these guys went off the glam-Duran-disco-whatever deep end, they actually rocked - on this album at least. PROMISE, their first album, is kind of a warm-up for IMMIGRANT, in my view. Someone made an apparently last minute addition of "Bruises," originally on PROMISE, to IMMIGRANT (the song title doesn't appear on the original album sleeve, which I have on vinyl). "Bruises" is the best song on PROMISE but almost pales in comparison to the best songs on IMMIGRANT. I haven't heard PROMISE in a while though, and I'm not sure if "Bruises" is the same version on each album.

The songwriting (which could qualify as "gothic," your imagination permitting) is better on IMMIGRANT and the playing is tighter and punchier. The music itself is pretty distinctive, incorporating Middle Eastern touches. I find the quivering, high-pitched voices of the twin Aston brothers to be deliciously vampiric, although I think a lot of others (particluarly girls) just find them sexy. However you hear them, these guys do sound pretty unique.

The best tracks:

The opening rocker "Always A Flame"

The gorgeous, hovering "Stephen"

The evocative, propulsive "The Immigrant"

And the more easy-going closer, "Coal Porter"

But my absolute favorite is the bizarre and slinky "The Rhino Plasty." That one's really out there.

4 stars because some of the other tracks don't quite measure up as well. "Worth Waiting For" is the weakest in my view and "Cow" doesn't turn me on so much either. But "Shame" is good and I do actually like "Bruises."

An aside: I won't say this band's name is as dog-awful as, say, Marcy Playground, but I think the choice to call themselves Gene Loves Jezebel probably turned off some people who might have liked them otherwise. Can't say that it really bothers me though! Too bad, but they pretty much lost me after their next release DISCOVER came out.

Can't comment on the bonus CD as I haven't heard it. I'll have to break down and get this version at some point, in which case I will probably update my review.

5 out of 5 stars Except for 'Motion Of Love'..........2006-12-16

I give this album 5 stars (though I'm not a fan of this version of 'Motion Of Love' - music is great, but prefer the Motion Demo available elsewere). Otherwise I love this album for the time period it takes me back to. 'Treasure' is my favorite track. DISCOVER is equally a great solid album. They are great Jezebel albums and excellent Jezebel tracks can be found on all their albums.

4 out of 5 stars AND JEZEBEL LOVES GENE.......2005-06-28

Perfectly representative of 80s music, Gene Loves Jezebel's "The House of Dolls" holds it's ground today as just good playful and meaningful rock and roll pop. The gushy and upbeat, "The Motion of Love" (a minor hit record), and back door romance of "Suspicion", would be standard rock love songs if not for GLJ's glittery and pounding treatment, both songs deliver an addictive melody with a relentless beat your mind won't feel guilty humming. The call and response falsetto vocal in "Every Door" lingers in an ocean of tic-toc percussion and jangly guitar. A bit like, The Alarm, a bit like, Pet Shop Boys, a bit like, Dream Syndicate, they represent 80s rock (not quite new wave), yet remain in a unique category of their own, call it hard playful pop.

4 out of 5 stars Strong Transitional Album for GLJ.......2005-01-15

Like many of the 80's postpunk bands, Gene Loves Jezebel went through many phases along their musical journey. Also like many postpunk bands, Jezzie started by combining elements of punk and Goth... think Siouxsie, Joy Division/New Order, The Cult, The Cure, Love & Rockets/Bauhaus, The Church, etc. While others became more electronic (New Order) or alternative rock (Cure, Church, Love & Rockets), Jezzie went more in a hard rock direction making them somewhat similar in this cadre of bands to The Cult without the overt metal aspect. That's exactly where you find them on 'House of Dolls', transitioning from the dark alt-rock of earlier works to the more accessible, harder guitar-driven music found here.

Most people like this album quite a lot (especially in retrospect) but it is important to note that at the time many of their early, underground fans considered this album to be a sellout exchanging creativity for an attempt to hit the hard rock mainstream... One should also note that The Cult got the same exact criticism in the same exact year as they moved from nuanced beauty of 'Love' to the party metal of "Electric'. Well, from a sales angle the crossover worked as GLJ jumped to the front of alternative pop and drew attention from the rock crowd like never before; they went from playing small clubs to playing large venues quickly during this time. In sum, they lost some hardcore early fans but picked up legions of new ones.

So let's discuss the album itself. First let's dispel much of the inaccuracy that you've read elsewhere (maybe even in this thread of reviews). First, this is not in any way a Goth album. There are elements of the darker edges from previous works lurking within the songs but nothing borders on outright Goth as this is quite a poppy, rock effort. In fact, if you didn't know their earlier history the thought wouldn't really occur to you at all. Secondly, it is not a widely accepted fact that 'House of Dolls' is by far their best work; This point is widely debated among fans many of whom hate this album and see this as the point at which they started to go wrong. Furthermore, in defense of 'Discover' it did not have only 2 good songs - it did after all have 4 singles (Heartache, Desire, Beyond Doubt and Sweetest Thing) and the most buzz went to Heartache and Desire. 'Discover' was the album that made GLJ an underground sensation just as 'Head on the Door' did for The Cure... 'House of Dolls' pushed them more into the mainstream but it didn't start the buzz - this is critical to know.

OK so onto the songs themselves. There are at least 5 great songs on the album; Yours will vary but my faves are "Gorgeous", "Motion of Love", "Set Me Free", "20 Killer Hurts" and "Up There". As you can see I clearly disagree with the other reveiwer's notion that the 1st 2 songs are the only bad ones... apparently so did GLJ as those 2 songs were the LEAD singles and both appear on the Best-Of collections. All of these songs offer strong riffs, catchy hooks and solid refrains that will stick in your head. What makes the band unique is Aston's sometimes smoky and alternately high-pitched voice; It's truly unlike anyone else. In this era where you basically choose between vocalists that sound like pseudo-grunge deep voice ripoffs of Eddie Vedder (Creed, Disturbed, etc.) or whiny pop-punks (Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182, etc.), uniqueness is key. Another item is interest is the fact that Jezzie was one of the only bands crossing over into hard rock that was outwardly and openly gay. I mean they looked gay, but that point got lost in the over-made-up glam look of the time anyway. Listen to songs like "Gorgeous" and it's clearly in the lyrics. He's singing a love song to another guy who is caught up living as a straight man in a small town that would never accept the true him - "So you go a bar and you talk to your friends about girls and cars... you're so gorgeous, baby yes you are... save me... take me."

Gene Loves Jezebel was a major player in 80's alternative and they had loads of very good songs. They should not be forgotten. 'House of Dolls' in my opinion is excellent combining catchy rock riffs, haunting melodies and distinct vocals. I'm not sure if I like it more than earlier albums where the bass and beats were more prominent as opposed to the lead guitar dominance here, but it's worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Their Best Album By Far.......2004-10-07

I just received House of Dolls two days ago along
with Discover. There's no question that House of
Dolls is the better of the two. Lets start with
the important thing - great, catchy songs. Discover
has two great songs, Wait and See, and Desire.
House of Dolls has 4 really great songs, and 4 very good
songs, and 2 good songs. Gorgeous is great,
a little too long though. Suspicion is great, just awsome, a perfect song. Treasure is excellent. Drowning Crazy is very good. Really, this album doesn't have a bad song. It was interesting to note that Peter Walsh produced only one song
on Discover, Desire, which was the best song of the album. He produced this whole album, he really captures the band perfectly.
What a damn good job.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Guitar + Dance Mix = Incredible Album.......2004-01-31

The smart goth of The Cure. The brilliant hard rock of early Aerosmith. The stylish beat of Duran Duran. If you ever liked any of the above, Gene Loves Gezebel is for you. And The House of Dolls is their masterpiece. With the exception of the first two songs, every track on this album is a winner. From the driving passion of Suspicion (the mislabled fourth track), to the relentless slashing guitar to Twenty Killer Hurts, to the hauntingly atmospheric Up There, you will dig this great album.

4 out of 5 stars 80s to the max, but still great.......2003-11-04

The film that this soundtrack represents (when it's actually in print) was a funny little gem, and from the Breakfast Club on, John Hughes always made sure that his soundtracks were very carefully assembled.

In this case, some great alt-rock from Gene Loves Jezebel ("Desire"), a classic crooner by Bryan Ferry ("Crazy Love"), a Smiths cover by Kirsty MacColl ("You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby"), and one of Kate Bush's best tracks ("This Woman's Work") round out a phenomenal collection of essential 80s tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Man, I Gave This Album Away!!! :(.......2002-07-24

[This much] for a version of this?!?!? C'mon--it IS a great soundtrack, and I would very much like to have the CD, but even I have my limits.

Highlights--"Crazy Love," Bryan Ferry. I haven't heard the song for 10 years, but I can still hear it in my mind--about as good as it gets.
"Happy Families," XTC--at least that's available elsewhere (Rag and Bone Buffet, an XTC compilation.
"You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby"--originally a Smiths song (and a very good one, available on "Louder Than Bombs"), never realized that it was Kirsty MacColl (it's called reading the liner notes--I'm not good at that).

Rhino or Rykodisk, re-release this album NOW (Razor & Tie, you too).

The Jezebels were always attuned to the darker side of romance and sex, unlike the shiny, neutered pop yearnings of their contemporaries. Like most early 80's bands, they'd been weaned on glam rock, but it was the underground that was receptive to their punk-funk undertones and vision. Fronted by androgynous twins Jay and Michael Aston and featuring an evolving cast of musicians, the early recordings had an experimental edge that has kept the music fresh. Long unavailable, this classic catalog is finally re-issued in double disc packaging. "Discover" CD 1: a Top 40 UK chart entry, this was the album that got the band signed to Geffen in the US and introduced the classic line up. CD 2: this bonus disc includes some tracks never before issued on vinyl, let alone CD, which were only available on cassingle.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band!!!.......2007-05-21

Gene Loves Jezebel is definitely a great band! They are among the best bands from the 90's. All GLJ albuns I listened to so far are good. Highly recommended. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for G.L.J. fans!.......2006-03-11

I have been a Gene Loves Jezebel fan since the eighties, however I have lost touch of them in recent years. I recently purchased the two-cd editions of Discover, Immigrant, and Promise, and have been delighted with my purchases. The second cd for each one has brought back the reason I liked the band in the first place, containing plenty of rarities and songs previously unavailable on cd. They also include new photos, lyrics, and stories from members of the band. If you have been a fan of this G.L.J. era then you will be very pleased!!! Hope they re-release House of Dolls with extras!!!

Amazon.com essential recording

Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques. Highlights include "The Jezebel Spirit," an electro-funk workout that uses a recording of an exorcism as its focal point, and "Very, Very Hungry," a mysteriously ethereal display of electronic percussion and large-scale sonic architecture. --S. 5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking!.......2006-03-30

Wgen I first heard this record I was completely blown away. IT was a completely new and unique fusion of ethnic music and modern technology. tracks such as Jezebel Spirit and Help Me Somebody remain incredible even to this day. Even if the sound has aged slightly (it is somewhat trebly by today's standards and the bass and guitar somewhat too newwavy...but i guess it was the time so...) I still consider this one of the ...100 best records i have.

5 out of 5 stars Qu'ran is back, baby........2005-04-18

Perhaps I have a strange version of the cd, but I think the new versions of the cd now have "Qu'ran" as track 6 and "Very, Very Hungry" at track 12.

I'm glad they put Qu'ran back in the mix because it's one of my favorite songs. I also particularly like "Mea Culpa" "Regiment" "Help Me Somebody" "Come With Us" and "Very, Very Hungry"

It's very funky and odd. Not quite like anything else. I do get strange looks from people, though, when they hear preaching coming out of my cd player.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking brilliance..........2005-03-31

Few records can justifiably claim to be "groundbreaking", but here's one - a mesmerising example of two highly creative musicians at the peak of their powers pushing their ideas out to the edge. Using the infectious poly-rhythms and jerky, high tension riffs & vocals that permeated their brilliantly successful collaboration on Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" as their starting point, they mix-in ingenious looped samples and insidious guitar, synthesizer & percussion back-beats to produce something completely unique. Not only like nothing else around at the time but, like all truly great albums, one that hasn't aged with time. Often sounding more like an inventive slice of modern "electronica/dance" it's almost impossible to believe that it was produced over twenty years ago... and, of course, a great deal of what's followed since can be traced back to this amazing record.

Darker and far more "left-field" than "Remain in Light", "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" is no easy listen, but with repeat playing it becomes equally addictive... a worthy successor and a wholly successful exploration of just how far Brian Eno's & David Byrne's complex fusions of electronica & rock could be taken. File under "essential, timeless and under-rated slice of musical genius".

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant .......2004-11-18

I have had a few copies of the vinyl, and back in the day created a cassette with the deleted track Qu'Ran. Then a friend gave me a program that enabled me to rip Qu'Ran from tape to the PC and enabled me to burn a cd with the proper track listing adding Very Very Hungry as the bonus track it should have always been.We are also in the process of finding the Katherine Kuhlman tracks which were deleted due to pressure from her estate.Whee!

4 out of 5 stars Why Qu'aran is not in this CD ??.......2004-07-16

From S?o Paulo, Brazil !
This album is excellent, but a song called Qu'aran, (one of my favourite)is not on this CD ! political reasons ? I don't know.
Fortunately I have a vinyl version. If you don't know this song, try to find in vinyl, the bass line is great !

4 out of 5 stars Excellent CD reissue of classic 1st album! .......2005-06-11

Unfairly lumped into the Goth craze of the early 80's, this tuneful duo really rocks with this, the first of many great releases. Kind of hard to nail down references, although U2-like guitar is predominant."Aquatic" was a term used to describe this shimmering guitar sound back in the early 80's. The vocals remind me a bit of Gavin Friday of the Virgin Prunes, another band that started out in the early 80's that also has a U-2 reference . Strong tunes throughout, a classic of it's time that still sounds great today. What really clinches this deal is the bonus cd, loaded with rare 12" mixes, unreleased cuts, and b-sides to some REALLY rare vinyl singles . The "Shaving My Neck" e.p., their extremely rare first single is here, as is,IMHO, their best ever song, the b-side to the "Bruises" single, "Punch Drunk". This song just flat out rocks, and I'm glad to finally have it, along with this entire collection, on cd at last. Eighties rock fans and, well, yes, Goth fans alike should seek this cd out before it slips away. I've found that re-releases like this are labors of love influenced by dedicated fans that surely won't make anyone rich, they are put out because they are too important to be forgotten, and they are good! I'm sure that not a lot of copies are pressed, hence my statement about picking it up quick. Plus, check out the low price - it's a great deal compared to the sludge that's getting cranked out now at $18.99 a pop.

3 out of 5 stars I love Gene, who loves Jezebel........2005-04-17

Obviously I'd suggest the "Voodoo Dollies" collection to the newcomer, but this is a pretty good album as well. The title track is good, and "Jealous" is an incredibly catchy song and single. Yes this is kind of genreless, but alt-goth-rock with a splash of hair-metal roughly fits the bill. This being hard to find now, if you see it, don't "Walk Away" from it.
