Over the last several years, guitarist Arto Lindsay has mellowed out a bit, ditching his avant-garde noise roots and embracing the sounds of Brazilian tropicalia music and the work of artists such as Gilberto Gil and Jobim. On Invoke, his music--leaner, filled with beats, and prescribed to funky rhythms that owe themselves to no particular region of the world--continues to evolve. He still toys with both English and Portuguese lyrics, but the romantic acoustic ballads found on his previous efforts are mostly gone, replaced by more loops, break beats, and the brooding bass of Melvin Gibbs. The gorgeous tenderness found on "Delgada" makes the track a standout, while "Over/Run" is the album's most infectious, hook-laden composition, seamlessly melding the beats of electronica with Lindsay's trademark vocal delivery. Lindsay takes chances--a few of the album's dozen tracks are throwaways--but, like Moreno Veloso, he's forging his own style of world music. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Invoke.......2003-11-29

Invoke, Arto Lindsay's latest album, brings to American shores both the past tradition and promising future that Brazilian music is having on the global scene today. Lindsay, who was born in the States, demonstrates this spectrum by incorporating the bossa nova and tropicalia movements he grew up around in the 60's and his more experimental leanings from his basis in New York City with Nação Zumbi, one of Brazil's leading rock bands of the present day. Well-respected amongst his worldwide peers, past collaborators include David Byrne, Laurie Anderson, Caetano Veloso, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Brian Eno. Lindsay's warm reedy vocals are secure enough on Invoke to stand on their own but rather than let them dominate his compositions, he allows them to remain natural within the songs' organic structures. "Illuminated" carries a smooth groove and the next track "Predigo" could even be called drum-and-bass. "Over/Run" sounds as if it could be an Everything But The Girl collaboration while the sweet lullaby of a ballad, "Delegada," and the classic "Beija-me" both show the beauty of the Portuguese language. Invoke is easily Lindsay's most accessible album blending the sound of today's Brazil with the country's varied musical history.

2 out of 5 stars Pleasurable, But He's Repeating Himself.......2003-02-12

Arto Lindsay's electronica, with its deep Brazilian rhythms and sensuous sheen, has certainly been influential. From his days in the no wave skronk band DNA through his leadership of Ambitious Lovers, Lindsay has always delighted in breaking convention, expanding genre until the term itself is meaningless. He's a true original, nowhere more evident than on his masterful Mundo Civilizado, with a remake of "Erotic City" as indelible and odd as Prince's original. Though still a master craftsman, on Invoke you can hear Lindsay repeating himself. There isn't a time during these 12 tracks when you don't think: he's done this better before. Yet there are pleasures. The title track is a true invocation - the resurrection, in images, of a vanished lover. And "Beija-me", the simplest number here, is a breezy kiss worthy of Gilberto Gil.

3 out of 5 stars He Is a Man.......2002-07-25

What he invokes to make it I don't know. What he evokes is the usual array of things. He sounds a little tired, out of ideas. I somehow don't get the impression he's really illuminated (title of first song), but he could be. There are some nice things here that are somewhat harsher than his earlier forays into tropicalism. He's a good producer. No one else is making music like this for dumb Americans; Gilberto Gil is probably the most accessible of all the post-1967 Brazilian pop musicians, and he's been making this intermittently cool MOR music for years, stuff like "Quanta" which is quite expert, very enjoyable, and overproduced. Those of us familiar with Gil, Veloso, Mutantes, Gilberto, Regina, are glad Arto is doing what he does--it does seem a bit played out now. "Mundo Civilizado" remains his masterpiece to date, a really fine record. So: get this one, it's certainly better than similar music from Sting or Michael Franks or Paul Simon or David Byrne. Then maybe check out some Carlinhos Brown, Sergio Mendes, Elis Regina, or pre-1980 Gilberto Gil.

5 out of 5 stars Another fine, weird album by this avant-bossa rocker.......2002-07-11

A North American musician who was raised in Brazil, Lindsay later moved to New York, where he became part of the '80s art rock scene, forming the Ambitious Lovers along with Peter Scherer. Lindsay has produced, played on, (or translated lyrics for) many recent albums by folks such as Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, and Vinicius Cantuaria, helping add a complex technological veneer to the Brazilian sound. Although at first blush this album may only seem like a retread of the last few records, it certainly has its unique allure. As the disc opens up, the second song, "Predigo," reveals itself as one of Lindsay's most creative arrangements to date, a dense mix of soul, samba and difficult listening. The third song, "Ultra Priveleged," has some easygoing wordplay that makes it readily accessible, although from then on out the album thickens up and becomes more impenetrable, albeit in a very listenable fashion. Fans of his last few albums won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars sound clash...........2002-07-11

Arto combines so many different styles on his new album, 'Invoke', and pulls it of like a true master. Cinematic strings, electronic bleeps and bloops, jazz drums, noise guitar, Brazilian themes, pretty much anything goes. I'm not sure if I like this one better than the brilliant 'Prize', it will take a few years to tell, but this truly is a rewarding listen. Arto's music comes across as elegant yet naive...avant garde yet fun...and progressive yet classic.

    Album Description

Virtuoso musician, inventor, and visionary, Mark Deutsch releases an extraordinary new CD that debuts his epic composition, Fool, and features his revolutionary new instrument, the Bazantar, for which he has received a U.S. patent.

The Bazantar is a 38-stringed instrument, possessing 29 sympathetic, 4 drone, and 5 melody strings. Its engineering concept radically advances preexisting "sympathetic instrument" configurations. Robert Wilucki, a luthier who worked on the instrument, remarks, "It is genius what Mark has done with his invention--totally unique." The Bazantar's sound is multilayered and extraordinarily resonant. These characteristics, combined with Deutsch's unique style and prodigious technique, create the perception of several instruments being played simultaneously.

Fool..., the first recording to showcase the Bazantar, also employs the sitar and various percussion instruments. As a composer, Mark Deutsch has integrated many diverse elements into this work. He weaves Indian music's sublime melodic contouring with the panoramic architecture of classical music, universal mathematical principles with a jazz musician's commitment to spontaneous creation, and avant-garde's visceral convulsions with folk tradition's graceful simplicity to create a musical gestalt that defies simplistic categorization.

The Bazantar and sitar tracks are live solo performances. There is no overdubbing, looping, or other studio effects on these tracks. Rarely attempted in today's environment of digital manipulation, this method of recording requires substantial skill by both engineer and musician. The result is a work that reveals the creative process with a vitality remarkable in character.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Hybrid Vigor.......2002-03-30

I am fresh from a concert presentation of gryphon-like beast the bazantar. The versatility of this instrument, in Mr. Deutch's most able hands, is quite remarkable. This recording is superb in its ability to place one inside the music. From this recording, from the concert, one gets a sense of vast possibilities and expectations for this instrument.

Fool is a musical exploration of a life as a spiritual path, one version at any rate, a rather saturnine version. I look forward to Mr. Deutsch putting out further recordings so he can expand the mystical vision with some of the irreverence of which he is also capable. Mysticism demands deconstruction to transcend itself. Fool is also a lesson in musicality. Part of the joy of this music is that it feels both unique and connected. We love to place things in categories (we cannot not do this in fact) and while I sit with this I have both the Baudelairean sense of plunging into the abyss of the new yet resonance with and anchoring to many traditions and expressions. As I am writing this I notice the second movement is playing, titled Persival. It includes a golden-ratioed figure-eight-like symbol. Interesting conjunction. Pesrival means "through the middle" or living in the points of conjunction, Whitman's "both in and out of the game. The bazantar is itself a point of intersection.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendant Visionary Music: beyond the beyond.......2000-01-07

This music is unique and certainly difficult to describe with words. But I'll give it a go: With his Bazantar, Mark masterfully creates sound and timbre that entwine the exquisite aural resonance with cryptic mystical conjurings, beckoning the mind to relax and open and explore a transcendant tapestry of emotive texture and visionary trance.

5 out of 5 stars Trance inducing, hallucinogenic!.......1999-10-25

By the 4th movement I found myself far removed from my sense of self in the room. The space around me grew very large and intense. This music is very interesting and penetrating. The fact that this music is of solo performance it astounding to me!

      Album Description

WAKENING is Julie Larson's 2nd release for Artmuse Records that showcases a left-hand turn in her artistic and songwriting evolution. Ten rocking numbers layer the formidable talents of Tal Morris (Huey Lewis & The News) on lead guitars, Bill Laymon (David Nelson Band, NRPS,etc.) on bass, and the legendary Pete Sears (Hot Tuna, etc.) on keyboards & accordion, with Julie on rhythm guitars, vocals & flute, and Don Bourne on drums.

Culled from songs written primarily after "Apotheosis", WAKENING captures in the studio the conflicting energies and juxtaposition of strong emotions prevalent in our times. A concept album that shifts energies from negative to positive, WAKENING is exactly what we need in our world-at-large today. Rooted in a myriad of classic rock influences, and combined with rock-solid backing, WAKENING is a shamanic journey to higher energy. Influences ranging from Eric Clapton to Traffic, Neil Young to The Who, early Jefferson Airplane and many others can be heard here.

From the clever invitation of "Someone Like You", through the hot proposition of "Sweet Thing", the timely honesty of "Killer Go Home" to the unapologetic anthem "I'm Not Sorry", WAKENING is a great representation of Julie's rapidly evolving talents. Her style has been compared to artists ranging from Ani Difranco to Joan Baez, Phoebe Snow to The Roches, but WAKENING puts her in a class all her own.

Beyond Tradition is an attempt to honor the drum and its ability to invoke a deep sense of well being, as we surround its grace with other instruments, both old and new, from around the world. In blending musical genres and age old traditions with more contemporary styles of music, we have created a sound that echoes peace, communication, connection, healing and evolution. Through the filter of our group mind, a body of work was born as if channeled to us from an ancient time - a message for for our world today. This process was deeply rewarding. We hope hope that this newest offering is as satisfying to our listeners. In peace, Inanna

4 out of 5 stars Another good one from St. Paul's!.......2000-06-04

Here's another satisfying member of the "English Anthem" series, with a good blend of old favourites and more recent works, all of it making for quite an ambitious and challenging programme.

As with previous and subsequent volumes in the series, John Scott takes the opportunity to record items written specially for the St. Paul's Choir. The opening work "Let the people praise Thee, O God" is one such item, commissioned from William Mathias for the Wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981. Sadly, this recording was made nearly a year after Mathias' death, and one cannot help but feel that the choir is bidding farewell to him in this performance, although the opulence and joy in the music are brilliantly captured.

Of especial note is the representation, side by side, of York Minster's celebrated masters of music, Edward Bairstow and Francis Jackson, the latter of whom studied with the former. The so-called "English Renaissance" is further embodied in Herbert Howells' "Hymn to St. Cecilia" and the double choir anthem "Bring us, O Lord" by William Harris (the magic of his similar work, "Faire is the Heaven," sadly does not come through as much in this one).

More recent and very difficult offerings come in the form of "Let us invoke Christ" (commissioned from Francis Grier of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford; this is very indicative of his interest in Eastern music) and Jonathan Harvey's "I Love the Lord," which is frankly not as well sung here as on it's original recording by Winchester Cathedral Choir. (If there's only one thing that annoys about St. Paul's Cathedral Choir, it's that the tenors and basses have a tendency to use heavy vibrato, which can absolutely ruin works like this.)

Finally, the old favourites and staples of choirs up and down the country: Stanford's choral fanfare "Coelos ascendit hodie"; the beautiful and versatile "Teach me, O Lord" by Thomas Attwood (which I have sung frequently at Selby Abbey); and Charles Wood's magnificent "O Thou, the central orb" all bring a wonderful dimension to the programme. For the conclusion, Scott and his forces take on "Hear my words, ye people," C. H. H. Parry's mammoth setting of prophetical verses from the Bible. Practically a miniature cantata, it ends with the much-loved hymn "O Praise ye the Lord" - in its original form, with a joyful alternative harmonisation of the tune and a soaring, powerful "Amen." This is a truly heroic ending to a compelling performance.

St. Paul's Choir have richly earned their reputation for exploring the English Church Repertoire to its furthest limits. This disc is the proof of it. Mostly excellent!
