3 out of 5 stars Remaster is a HUGE Letdown.......2007-04-14

Don't get me wrong, this is a great collection of songs! I love them!
I owned the vinyl, I bought the Gold cd remaster, too. I think the problem lies with the poorly recorded basic tracks, especially the drums, which are mostly distorted, and lack any dynamic range (cardboard boxes?). Drums, bass, guitars, and synths sound as if they were squeezed onto one track in order to make room for more guitar, synth, voices and string overdubs. I was hoping that Jeff would RESCUE and RESTORE this album, and free up all those elements with a nice stereo mix. Have you heard the restoration on 60's Beatles tracks that make up the remixed/remastered Yellow Submarine? Pet Sounds in Stereo from the original Mono? The awesomely improved sound of Aqualung? Who's Next? My G-G-G-Generation? It HAS been done. The sound is a bit better, but Jeff Lynne, I am disappointed, sir!

4 out of 5 stars maybe elo's best, but i am not committing myself........2007-03-17

elo doesn't get much respect from the prog-rock crowd as far as i can tell. that's too bad, because there is a lot of great music on this album that i would call classic prog-rock. this recording is not as commercial sounding as there later albums, and has more variety of sound overall. it opens with "fire on high," a stunning prop-rock instrumental, then moves into a gorgeous mid-tempo song "waterfall." this, and two other mid-tempo tunes: the hit "strange magic," and "one summer dream," are, to me, the best stuff on the album. "poker," is a fine rocker, and "down home town," sounds like a fine lost ringo starr track. fantastic album overall, and the remastering has a wonderful sound.

5 out of 5 stars ELO's Answer To RUBBER SOUL, Now Given The Proper Remastering Treatment.......2007-02-22

Just as ELDORADO and A NEW WORLD RECORD are ELO's SGT. PEPPER and REVOLVER, respectively, and OUT OF THE BLUE their WHITE ALBUM, FACE THE MUSIC is their answer to RUBBER SOUL, and it's even better now that it's been remastered and had bonus cuts added. The opener, "Fire On High", was a big interpretive dance number for me- why it was never included on any anthology is anyone's guess, but now you get it in full digital glory. The other best songs here are the hard rocker "Poker", the psychedelic love song "Strange Magic", and the scathing "Evil Woman", which anyone who's seen the play or movie ANNIE would say is about the character of Miss Hannigan. I haven't heard the bonus cuts, but they provide a new window into ELO's creative process.

5 out of 5 stars LYNNE WEAVES HIS STRANGE MAGIC.......2007-01-27

This is the album that pretty much to me, was the beginning of that ELO "sound" that I love so very much and was pretty much the time when ELO was really just starting get very popular. I like this album very much and their next album A NEW WORLD RECORD proved to be even better. Jeff Lynne, at this point, seemed more comfortable with the sound that he was trying to achieve for ELO. This album from start to finish is such a wonderful listen, pretty solid, and the re-mastered sound is clean and crisp. I only wish there were more songs on it, but oh well, at least the extra bonuses are a real treat. I definately recommend this album, especially if you are just starting to listen to ELO, this is beginning of what I think is the start of the great ELO sound and song writing.
Highlights: "WATERFALL","EVIL WOMAN","NIGHT RIDER" and "STRANGE MAGIC"

5 out of 5 stars Perfect edition.......2007-01-05

Electric Six is the most exciting band to come tumbling out of Detroit since Kiss. Sporting grimy leisure suits and hilarious stage names (the guitarists are known only as Surge Joebot and the Rock and Roll Indian), the ragtag group comes up with a deliriously catchy disco trash sound on its smart, hyperactive debut. Studio 54 horns mingle anxiously with AC/DC-influenced garage riffs, while frontman Dick Valentine rants maniacally over jerky, suggestive punk-funk songs like "Gay Bar" and "I'm the Bomb." Plus, rumor suggests that single "Danger! High Voltage" features the White Stripes' Jack White on backing vocals and, less plausibly, Bill Clinton on saxophone. How cool is that? Very. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

Detroit's Electric Six splice punk, new wave, disco, and arena rock into a total entertainment solution for the new breed of rock n' roller. 'This single is...pure driving disco-rock, complete with a new wave saxophone solo and ridiculous lyrics. Easily one of the best rock songs of the past year' - NY Times. 'Hold on, have the White Stripes gone Studio 54?' XL Records. 2003.

This is the best album I've heard in a long while. It's addictive and they've got the right mix of genres. I highly, highly recommend you buy this album if you want to smile every time you play it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-08-06

This is the best album I've heard in recent years. Gets getter the more you listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the critics...classic underrated gem.......2006-06-06

Unfortunately many music critics have a pre-occupation with "credibility" which is deemed as "any singer/band whose lead singers have a messianic complex, whose music is bland and barely listenable and has attempted suicide. It helps if the singer is noticeably drugged-up". If you are like me and like pop, techno and hard rock, you'll love Electric Six. E6 combine a bold fusion of disco and hard rock with a sexed-up singer who sounds like he's got four balls and they're all on fire.

Everything here's about girls, dancing, fire and nuclear war. Nearly all tracks are great these are my favourites in descending order

The Bomb
Naked Pictures (Of Your Mother)
Nuclear War (on the dance floor)
Dance Commander
Improper Dancing
I invented the night
Gay Bar
She's White
Getting Into the Jam
Electric Demons in Love
Danger High Voltage

5 out of 5 stars This CD is more explosive than a nuclear war.......2006-05-04

I LOVE this album. Techno-dance-disco-metal-punk-parody-garage rock! This album, and this band, do it all and do it all amazingly well.

Dance Commander starts the CD with all the power and fury of... what else, a nuclear war! If this song doesn't capture you, then you have problems.

Electric Demons in Love, Naked Pictures, Danger High Voltage, She's White, I Invented the Night, Gay Bar, Improper Dancing, and Synthesizer are all OUTSTANDING tracks. I'm the Bomb is great too- the only song on here that is not brilliant is The Jam in my opinion. Once I put this album on I can't stop listening until it's all over- it's very captivating. Musically, it's pure genius.

Easily the best album of 2003 by a long shot.

It's a feel-good, drive-around-in-your-car-with-the-top-down summer staple.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-03-12

This band had a really strong debut album ("Fire") but has been running out of gas ever since. "Senor Smoke" was mostly forgettable, and their latest offering, "Switzerland," is slightly better than its predecessor but still suffers from sounding too much like one long in-joke.

It seems that the Electric Six is doomed to have all their albums compared against their first one, but I guess that's the price of proving how good you can be from the outset, and then failing to deliver the same standard after that. Admittedly, "Fire" was kind of a long in-joke too, but they balanced out the silliness with such infectious metal/pop that it worked some kind of magic on the listener and compelled you to dance. The later discs are much more pop-oriented, and without that metal edge they're starting to sound more and more like Weird Al Yankovic. That's not a good thing.

Step it up, boys. We know you can sound more dangerous than this.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this and all their other albums ASAP........2007-01-03

These guys are still flying under rock n' roll's mainstream radar, but I'm not sure for how much longer, so get on board and support Electric Six.

Buy their 1st and 2nd albums as well, "Fire" and "Senior Smoke", both as good if not slightly better than "Switzerland".

4 out of 5 stars Weakest so far but still awesome!.......2006-11-30

I looove Electric Six. I saw them at the Key Club in LA in March and Dick Valentine looked totally plastered. He was hilarious. Did push-ups and sit-ups on stage. There was so much energy though it didnt matter that he kinda sucked singing on Dance Commander. That's the power of Dick. But on to the review: I can't decide whether Fire or Senor Smoke is my fave, but I know that Switzerland isn't. I like it, it's still a great album but it lacks something the first two had. Maybe E6 decided they wanted a larger fanbase and tried to change their sound to get new fans. Lyrically it's just as brilliant as the others: Sarcastic, tounge-in-cheek sexy, sometimes even politcally poignant, and way funny. Musically, while often catchy, just wasn't as up to par as usual. There are some greats here though, like I Buy The Drugs, Mr. Woman, Infected Girls, Pulling The Plug On The Party and There's Something Very Wrong With Us... and the short Chocolate Pope is classic. Overall they just don't rock as hard this time around. That's okay though, I'm still in love with them.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute magic!.......2006-10-15

Ah, Electric Six. Their energy, their humour, their originality. I love this band so much. 'Fire' was just such a disco-rock-metal-whatever blast, with plenty of songs that weren't trying to tell us anything other than, to quote from 'Spinal Tap,' "have a good time all the time." The follow-up, 'Senor Smoke,' was still a great album, but a little more serious in tone than 'Fire.' And that wasn't a bad thing, mind you. Dick Valentine is so magnetic that you can't help but listen to him. Whether he's belting out lyrics that make no sense, or telling us his views on politics and the US government either on the surface or subliminally. And even when he is standing on his soap box he still does it with humour and style. 'Jimmy Carter' is a perfect example of that.

In my opinion 'Switzerland' is a bridge between the two predecessors. It shares both the funky rock of the first, with a touch of the second album's poignancy. I'll admit, it took me a couple of listens to get right into it. Upon my first listen I couldn't help but think it wasn't as good as 'Fire,' but that's just because I'm a little biased towards that album. But now I cannot stop listening to it over and over. It's got me hooked, and I would put it on par with 'Fire' as their best album so far. Even the bonus track that we got as an Australian/NZ exclusive is pretty good, and I usually don't care much for remixes of songs. And I just love that they're going to release a video for every song on 'Switzerland' - no matter how cheap and crappy they may be.

Electric Six have still got it. Something I can't say for too many other bands on their third outing!

5 out of 5 stars awesome as usual!.......2006-10-15

This is one of the best bands out there. I am surprised they are not more popular. This CD is great. Some of the songs have that 1980's feel to them like Night Vision and Slices of You. I love E-6 and you should buy all their cd's. Well worth it!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

"Pah-rum-a-pum-pum!" Yes, that was Low that provided the soundtrack for a Christmas Gap commercial. With a slowed-down version of "The Little Drummer Boy," the stark-sounding Minnesota trio subtly marched into the aural lexicon of pop culture. Low's fifth full-length release, Things We Lost in the Fire, is an appropriate follow-up to their auspicious television debut. The Minnesota trio's stark sound has evolved--ever so slightly--since their 1994 debut, I Could Live in Hope. Tracking their career is like surveying the changes in a river's course--progress is perceptible, but just barely. Still, while modesty and restraint are key fundamentals for Low, Fire is full of grace and revelations. While earlier efforts lacked in contrast, "Dinosaur Act" and "Like a Forest" build and swell like thunderstorms coming over the horizon. Drummer Mimi Parker's vocals on "Embrace" are particularly evocative of the trio's evolution; achingly vulnerable, she lulls the listener with a promise of sanctuary before "crushing your skull with my warming embrace." What a glorious way to go. --Andria Lisle

Album Description

Fifth full length from Duluth trio recorded with Steve Albini. Guests include Marc D'Gli Antoni of Soul Coughing, Daniel Huffman and Ida Pearle of Shellac. Standard jewel case. 2001 release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Slow is the new fast.......2007-01-11

This is a breath taking album. I literally have to make sure that I keep breathing...Not really.
When I first heard Low it didnt click with me all too well. I wanted it to be faster, but I was foolish. After hearing In Metal, which is more of a bitter sweet ballad, it kind of kicked me into the mode of their music. If you do not like Low, give them a chance. It took me a better part of a year but it will come to you.

Question. If someone called Low shoegazers whould they be wrong?

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful album filled with gorgeous, subtle music.......2006-08-12

I've become a fan of Low rather late in their career. About a year and a half ago I heard THE GREAT DESTROYER and was blown away by it, picking it up instantly. Recently I decided I wanted to hear more and after some investigation decided to pick this one up. I have to say that it really is better than the other album I had previously fallen in love with. The pace on this album is ever slower, among the slowest in all of rock, right down there with Galaxie 500 or American Music Club. It is compelling stuff and grows on you the more you listen to it.

The songs are just exquisite and despite their slow tempo are often filled with irresistible hooks. I find the duet, for instance, in the intro of "Closer" to be almost painfully beautiful, while "Dinosaur Act" is so lovely it almost qualifies as pop. "Sunflower" kicks the album off and is one of the best cuts on the disc. "Whore" is a bit more subtle than these, but equally gorgeous, and "Like a Forest" is another highlight. I think my favorite cut, however, is probably "Dinosaur Act." Great lyrics and great passion.

I can understand someone not liking this. If you only like happy music, or music that employs only fast tempos, this could drive you insane. But while I'm not patient in everything, I'm patient in my music, and I am utterly in love with the slow-tempoed beauties on this.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to the world of "slo-core".......2006-02-09

I just started listening to Low, and wish I had heard of them sooner. Some people call the music depressing or cold, while others find it pensive or minimalist. I think they reach a nice balance, where this is something you can listen to, strike a mood, and just kick back. If your looking for something more gloomy, check out titles that are closer to Goth (see Lycia), where upbeat stuff would be something like Red House Painters. Anyways, really great stuff here. Check it out, you might like it. :)

5 out of 5 stars sure to be a classic.......2004-03-15

i've never really been a low fan; they always seemed too... boring.

but this album is veering dangerously on perfect. steve albini's productions is potentially the best i've ever heard him do (which is saying quite a bit) and the songs are tremendous examples of the tremendous power of minimalism.

4 out of 5 stars a spooked hubley and kaplan.......2003-04-26

I don't know, maybe it's narrow to say that `Things We Lost In The Fire` is the murky, the arcane, backwoodsian cousin to Yo La Tengo when the latter skip noise for sweet, harmonious acoustica. Maybe, but it's a pretty good frame to reference. "When they found your body/giant Xs on your eyes/with your half of the ransom/I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers/and gave them to the night" responds the opening lyric, Parker and Sparhawks harmonising like a haunted Hubley and Kaplan. Maybe it's more upbeat than previous works but really even then it rarely rises above a hush, and `Dinosaur Act`, the most rockin' thing here, still manages to slope and saunter. The lyrics and the sometimes murky Albini mix might sound spooked and oblique but they're infused with subtle romanticism and moments of sublime beauty, "things we lost in the fire/how did we ever get by/words we'll never take back/hold me closer than that".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Things In Store For This Guitarist!.......2005-07-16

This is a very talented young man who has a great future ahead of him. It's hard to believe he's only in his twenties.

You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.

The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".

The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!

One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!

5 out of 5 stars The blues lives on.......2005-03-29

In a world infatuated with hip hop, young African-American blues guitarists are a rare commodity. Rarer yet are those whose touch, tone, and vibe recall such Chicago blues greats as Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush in their youth. Meet Kirk Fletcher: Still in his '20s, he plays with the conviction and authority of a seasoned vet, yet burns with a young man's fire. Fletcher favors toothy Strat tones, stinging bends, and flurries of tight, staccato riffs that seem to pop from his fretboard like little firecrackers. His touch is supple and his fingering fluid, yet his phrases never sound slick or contrived. Fletcher and his no-B.S. band cover blues classics by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, and Magic Sam; toss in some R&B (including Percy Mayfield's "The River's Invitation" and a funky take on Booker T. & the MG's "Hip Hug Her"); and cap things off with modern offerings from the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson. Fresh, vital blues.

5 out of 5 stars A real talent to watch .......2005-02-06

Every now and when someone is able to emerge from the crowd of very good blues musicians out there and demonstrate that he has something special that distinguishes himself. I think that this is exactly the case of Kirk Fletcher. This album is a real gem that shouldn't be missed by any serious blues fan. With the help of veterans like Kim Wilson, Finis Tasby and Janiva Magness sharing vocal duties and the support of a fantastic band Mr. Fletcher delivers 17 strong blues songs that deserve to be listened. His guitar work is outstanding in every track and, even though very close to the style of the great players of the past, he brings something new into the mix. Fantastic tone control and fluid phrasing are, from my point of view, his main assets that together with is innovative way in creating music progression, make his sound fairly unique and very personal. Not a bad tune to be spotted, this is the classic CD that you would listen from start to finish and when it is over, well... you will play it again!

5 out of 5 stars Disk 1 - As Expected.. Disk 2- OMFG!!! UNBELIEVEABLE!!.......2006-07-27

I don't know what the "F" John K. Reed is talking about. Pay his reveiw no mind; both disks are...I really am at a loss for words for expressing how GREAT both disks are.

I am a regular Amazon customer, but I rarely feel the need (or have the time) to write a review. In this case I just had to let it be known how HOT TO DEATH this album is. Especially after reading Mr. Reed's reveiw. I haven't the faintest clue what he is smoking. All that I can say is that Disk 1 has all the usual classics that you know and love like "I Want to be Free", "Sweet Sticky Thing" and "Heaven Must be Like This". All of which, have been most of my favorite songs throughout my life. So basically disk 1's greatness was a given.

Disk 2?!?! It has been a very long time since a song made me smile and feel good all over within the first 15 seconds of listening to it for the first time. "Bi-Centennial" did that to me. It is very smooth and playful. Then another first listen for me was "Good Luck Charm". It's about 9 minutes and 52 seconds long. HOT! HOT!! HOT!!! A Classic I never Heard before!! The Ohio Players really pimp their way through that track sooooooo frickin' hard!! "Good Luck Charm" is a track that if your not careful you could be subconciously persuaded, by that song, to buy a '72 Cadillac Coupe De Ville (on 24s with candypaint) just to cop a mean gangster lean and ride around in blasting that track. It's the most listened to song in my household at the moment. "Time Slips Away" is another Hot CLASSIC I NEVER HEARD until now!

Disk 2 knocked my socks off, period. It basically reaffirmed to me how funky and soulful the Ohio Players are and that they are One of the Best R+B, Funk groups of all time. So much in so that I am now going to collect all of their albums, not just this compalation.

THIS ALBUM IS A MUST HAVE FOR A PLAYER. ADD TO CART AND COP IT TO BE A WITNESS TO GREATNESS!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is the bomb!!!.......2001-09-23

Anyone that grew up listening to the Ohio Players in the 70's should own this collection. It covers all ground. It's a keeper. I wouldn't have it any other way. To me, Heaven is owning this CD. It has all the favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Anthology You'll Find.......2001-07-14

A fabulous overview of a very underrated funk band. If you came of age in the mid-1970s and ventured beyond horrible Top 40 pop radio, then inevitably you chanced upon the Ohio Players. Hard-working and prodigious like great jazz players, they were always consummate musicians. This captures the best of their popular 1970s Mercury releases (nearly as interesting for their practically X-rated album covers as the great music within). All of the classics are here ("Love Rollercoaster" and "Fire") but one listen will expose you to the other fine, albeit less heard, cuts that never crossed over to 70s Top 40 but were staples of large city R&B stations -- and curiously making a comeback on "gold soul/funk R&B" radio formats of 2001. (Some of) these guys are still on the road in the summer of 2001, proving that good funk never dies. A worthy investment.

5 out of 5 stars PLAY ON.......2001-07-07

Oh yes, the Players. In my opinion the best funk band ever. From "Skin Tight" there is the X-tremely funky jam of the title cut and the incredible ballad "Heaven Must Be Like This". From "Fire" the incredible title track and check out the drum work on the smoldering ballad "I Want To Be Free". "Honey" is well represented with four cuts including the incredible jazz influenced "Sweet Sticky Thing". The second side includes latter day efforts that are not as well known but just as good. "Who'd She Coo" is so cool that the funk just flows throughout it and from "Gold" they included one of the two new cuts that were included on that release, "Only A Child Can Love" which is superior to Feel The Beat anyway. Check out "Body Vibes" too, wow, funky and jazzy it just flows and love the smokin funk and space sounds on "Funk-o-nots". Best of all these are all the full length album versions not the singles which do not do the Players justice. As a bonus the last three tracks are previously unreleased tracks from the "Jass-Ay-Lady" sessions (it was to be a double album). Too bad there aren't bands like this around anymore. Play On!

4 out of 5 stars Disc 1 - tremendous Disc 2 - disappointing.......2001-03-17

Had the producers elected to include different albeit less popular selections on disc 2 then the compilation could have been absolutely masterful.

If you're at all a fan of 70's funk then this one is required but there's enough uninteresting material to bring down the overall rating.

2 out of 5 stars The Elements' worst to date........2006-07-21

Being the big Earth Wind & Fire fan that I am, I have to say that this one was their worst! The Elements, in their attempts to keep up with the times, went the techno-funk route on this one and came up way short. The songwriting and the musicianship were way below standard (a third grader could have written "Moonwalk") and whose idea was it to ditch the heralded horn section? It wasn't a total disaster though. Phillip Bailey's vocals hold true, especially on "Living In Our Own Time" and the single "Touch" is actually kind of catchy. Thankfully The Elements would regain their touch on subsequent albums but this was definitely their lowest point.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2006-04-06

I just love this album and I think it one of theirs best albums
of all. All music songs great on this album, make me want to boogie. !

1 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2005-09-28

This is EW&F's worst album by far! Steer away! This album alone summons the worst of everything from the 80s & the "songs! are non-existing. Don't say I didn't warn ya! (Magnetic is a little funny though, in a comical sense).

4 out of 5 stars MAGNETIC!!.......2005-09-24

First a correction then my review:this album WAS released along with the other albums in the Earth,Wind & Fire catalog on CD in the early 90's but was apparently not in print very long-I should now I have that copy.Okay I have already reviewed 'Electric Universe' once and I would like to say that I have altered my opinion somewhat since having the CD.Generally
speaking 1983's 'Electric Universe' is Earth,Wind & Fire's attempt at electro-funk."Magnetic"-a speedy tune very much in that vein is the best known hit (with a bizzare video to boot).Another great tune, perhaps even catchier is the shuffling "Moonwalk" and the smoother "Touch"-all are classic Earth,Wind & Fire with some of Maurice and Phillip's best vocals. For whatever reason the Phenix horns do not seem to be operating on this album-the the orchestration is done by synthesized keyboards. The ballads tends to be where this album falters-"Could It Be Right" and "We're Living In Our Own Time" are very good but an album such as this should've been primarily uptempo with a one of two mid-tempo tunes for good measure."Electric Nation" and "Sweet Sassy Lady" make some interesting attempts at new wave but aren't wonderful compositions, relaying more on dramatic presentation. So is 'Electric Universe' as deserved of it's negative reviews?No-as far as the first three songs are concerned this CD could easily match up to their last two-thw writing is strong but it kind of peters out after that-maybe that's a sign that the band was pretty much ready for the hiatus that was to come.

Classic is a word tossed around so frequently and carelessly these days it's hard to recall the time when it accurately described truly stellar songs. Well, this compilation of 16 sides by Chicago slide-guitar master Elmore James, recorded in New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City between 1959 and 1961, includes real, honest-to-god classics such as "The Sky Is Crying," "Done Somebody Wrong," "Shake Your Moneymaker," and "Look Up Yonder Wall." James's grainy vocals and stinging guitar powerfully express pain and regret. His recording studio band, Broomdusters, sometimes with the great drummer Belton Evans present, reveals emphatic feeling in a supporting role. Only "My Bleeding Heart," sullied by noisome horns and a general sluggishness, and "Something Inside Me," on which an unidentified sax player wears out his welcome fast, fail the test of time. --Frank-John Hadley

5 out of 5 stars Classic Chicago Blues by the Greatest Blues Vocalist of all time!.......2007-07-14

The legendary Elmore James was one of the greatest bluesmen of all time who unfortunately didn't live long enough to receive the widespread attention given to other blues stars like BB King, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. Elmore, along with Muddy Waters, was one of the very first bluesmen to update Robert Johnson's acoustic delta blues with electric guitars and a driving, rocking beat. His energetic, boogie style of blues paved the way for rock n' roll in the 50's, and his slide guitar playing has influenced superstars from Duane Allman and Eric Clapton to George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

However, Elmore was one blues guitarist who actually sang even better than he played. As a young blues singer myself, Elmore's raw and gut-wrenching vocal attack has inspired me for several years. Hearing him tackle a blistering slow blues is a lesson in the underappreciated art of great blues singing. Listen to him tear into the final verse of "Something inside me" and you'll hear the kind of tortured, heartfelt singing that only guys like Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, and Johnny Copeland could pull off.

Many people still associate "The Sky is Crying" with Stevie Ray Vaughan, but James wrote the song and his original classic recording found on this CD simply blows away Stevie Ray's version. Elmore sings this song with the same blistering intensity that SRV played with, and while guys like Hendrix, Clapton, and Vaughan might have blown him off the stage with their guitar playing, none of them could compete with Elmore in the vocal department.

This great CD covers 16 of Elmore's best recordings from the early 60's with superb remastered sound! Although a few earlier gems from the 50's are missing {"It hurts me too", "The 12 year old boy", "I can't hold out", Hawaiian Boogie"} the 16 songs included here are all classic, hard-hitting Chicago blues at its best. This CD also includes the powerful 1959 remake of Elmore's biggest hit "Dust my Broom" that packs a bigger punch than his original 1952 recording.

If you are looking to explore the music of this legendary master of the blues, this CD is a great place to start even if a few classic recordings from his career are missing. If you love raw blues full of grit and passion, you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars - with reservations.......2003-12-03

Why the reservations?
Well, this collection only focuses on Elmore James' recordings for Bobby Robinson in the early 60s. He did remake many of his early hits for Robinson's Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels, and often in even better versions, but a few early-50s classics are missing, so "Shake Your Moneymaker" doesn't really work as a definitive Elmore James-compilation.

But let's forget about what's not here for a moment, and look at what is:
"Shake Your Moneymaker: The Best Of The Fire Sessions" gathers sixteen songs from the "King Of The Slide Guitar" box set, perfectly showcasing Elmore James' incredibly intense, slide guitar-driven electric blues. James was equally at home playing a smouldering slow blues like "The Sky Is Crying", and laying down raw, rollicking numbers like "Look On Yonder Wall" and his magnificent, fiery take on Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom". He always sang like he meant it, and he possessed a huge, emotional wail of a voice, imbuing everything from slow numbers and mid-tempo grinds to up-tempo ravers with passion and power.

The track selection is not 100% perfect, but it's very good, and several of these songs rank among the very best of electric Chicago blues, right up there with the greatest of Muddy Waters' and Howlin' Wolf's songs: "Shake Your Moneymaker", "Sunnyland", "Dust My Broom", "The Sky Is Crying", "Standing At The Crossroads", and a great rendition of Robert Nighthawk's "Anna Lee". ("It Hurts Me Too" is missing, though, which is a crime.)

"The Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James" from Rhino Records remains the ultimate Elmore James-collection, featuring 21 songs and spanning his entire career, but this is a very good overview of his superb Fire, Fury and Enjoy recordings. Just remember that if you opt for this one, you need "The Best Of Elmore James - The Early Years" from Ace Records as well. That terrific 28-track compilation is the best place to go for all of James' gritty early-50s classics for the Meteor, Modern and Flair labels.

5 out of 5 stars Influential, classic recordings.......2002-08-01

Elmore James is one of the most influential and imitated guitarists of all time. He is probably the most influential electric slide-guitarist of all time. His recordings have been covered many, many times throughout music history, including many on this CD. This is a collection of James' best recordings from his late-50's, early 60's stint with Fire Records. Many of his classics can be found here including Dust My Broom (one of the most covered blues songs of all time), The Sky is Crying, Done Somebody Wrong, Shake Your Money Maker, Anna Lee, I'm Worried, and Look On Yonder Wall. There are some classic songs missing from this CD, however, so this should not be your only Elmore James collection. There are informative liner notes, and the remastered sound is excellent.

Some of the rock artists that were influenced by Elmore James are the Allman Brothers Band, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top, Canned Heat, George Thorogood, The Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix and Paul Butterfield. This is a great CD to introduce anyone to Elmore James. Just don't stop here.

5 out of 5 stars Mississippi Has Got Just the Prettier Women.......2001-11-03

Elmore James I could listen to every day; there's something very reassuring about him. This is his best stuff, recorded for Bobby Robinson around 1960. Blues don't get no better than "Shake Your Moneymaker" and "Look On Yonder Wall" and "Stranger Blues." For years I've owned various LPs, some of which sound as though they were mastered from records in Denmark...and it's great to have this collection, with excellent sound. My favorite Elmore James moment, though, isn't on this compilation, but you can find it on the Collectables LP "The Complete Fire and Enjoy Sessions, Part 4," something called "Back in Mississippi." Elmore discourses on where to find the best-looking women: "I'm gonna tell you one damn thing, Jack, Mississippi has got just the prettier women than there is any goddamn where in the United States...and brother, I've been around."

4 out of 5 stars Ulrich Roth At The Height Of His Powers.......2005-10-06

Fire Wind has been released at least three times on CD over the years. I own a double-disc set of Earthquake and Fire Wind, but two weeks ago a friend and I got into a discussion about Roth, and afterward my friend played this particular reissue.

I was disappointed to find that, once again, the opening track, "Cast Away Your Chains" has had half of two different verses edited out as compared to the original Brain vinyl release. As far as I can tell, there are no other edits anywhere else on the disc. Perhaps the edited version now in circulation was intended for potential release as a single back in '80.

If you're already a fan of Electric Sun and looking for a good CD version of Fire Wind, I can assure you the mastering on this CD is excellent, and you will not be disappointed. If perhaps you're not familiar with the material but you've heard good things about Uli Roth's incredible guitar playing, and you're purchasing this out of curiosity, you certainly won't find anything to complain about from an instrumental standpoint. Just beware: Ulrich Roth's singing voice is, shall we say, an acquired taste. Roth once said in an interview, "A lot of people have had a go at my voice, not liking it in the least" (Kerrang)... but people generally don't buy Electric Sun or Uli Jon records for the singing anyway. Additionally, my friend and I agreed that this music just wouldn't sound "right" if a "trained" rock vocalist had participated. Roth's voice isn't unbearable, but in this day and age, be prepared to have your friends ask you to play a different CD...

U. Roth's considerable technical prowess and melodic inventiveness have been well-documented over the years. What Fire Wind displays above all other releases with which he's been associated is his complete mastery of the wah pedal tweak. There has never been another rock guitarist who has used the effect more subtly or effectively. Roth is constantly using the device to shape tones during his solos, multi-tracked unison lines, etc. He's only moving the pedal in small increments, but it's never arbitrary, and always with the intention of making the guitar sing, speak, cry in just the right way to further the emotional content of the melody.

As the previous reviewer has indicated, each solo is a gem in its own right, but you could spend a year just marveling at the nuances in the densely layered backing tracks. The amount of thought and dedication put into these recordings is staggering. From a technical standpoint, this release is quite a testament to the producer(s), engineers, tape-ops, right on down to the guy who fetched the tea and biscuits. Everything is miked just right and the clarity of the production is remarkable, given the complexity of the tracks. One can't help but wonder what the reaction of the crew was on the first day vocal tracks were cut. Definitely "moustache on the Mona Lisa" time...

Fire Wind features some of the best hard rock guitar ever recorded. It's also one othe most "intelligent" hard rock records available. Lyrically, it can get a little cosmic in places, and "Chaplin & I" could almost be considered camp, although I'm certain that was not the intention. In places, bassist Ule Ritgen really shines in his role. But it really is all about the compositions and the guitar playing. Soaring. Majestic. Inspired. Flawlessly performed. One would be hard-pressed to find an instance where the substitution of even one or two notes would result in an improvement.

Yngwie Malmsteen copped 100 percent of his wardrobe, stage antics and haircut from Ritchie Blackmore, and about 85 percent of his playing style from Ulrich Roth. But he can't hold a candle to Roth in the "emotion" department. Buy this disc and hear for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars A very uneven album.......2001-04-03

I normally like Tinsley Ellis' albums, but this one is the exception. It doesn't really hold together with any cohesion, and was evidently the result of (at least)two different sessions. The ones with the basic band of Bob McNeely (guitars) Scott Koziol(bass and Tad Parker (drums)[tracks 1,2,6,9 and 10] are tight and show off Ellis' guitar playing. I'd guess that this was his road band at the time; it certainly sounds like it. Producer Tom Dowd evidently wanted more tracks and variation, so the other tracks have a different band ( Duck Dunn on bass) with the augmentation of Kevin McKendree (keyboards) on some tracks.Best track from this session is Magic Sam's "Look what you done", but on the album as a whole pick are "Diggin'my own grave" and "One sunny day". If you're new to Tinsley Ellis buy another album first.
