5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The Music that made Ministry what it is.......2007-03-17

I just loved all three discs from the first song to the last, it was a great mix of songs from the past 15 years that make you feel like your at the club all over again!

2 out of 5 stars Another disappointment from MoS.......2007-01-03

Although you get alot of songs for $25, you get a lot of garbage which has been typical from MoS in the past two years. The best songs are from the album that features hits from the past. You can't really go wrong there. You'd be better downloading the 10 good songs from iTunes and saving $15.

4 out of 5 stars a readymade indie rock party playlist.......2007-02-13

Boasting pivotal cuts by Spent, Polvo, the Magnetic Fields, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lambchop and others, this anniversary comp is a quick study in what a brilliant label Merge has evolved into over the last fifteen years... Their roster is practically the indie-rock dream team.

In addition, disc three of this very affordably priced compilation is all unreleased tracks: "Some Small History" by Portastatic, M. Ward's "One More Goodbye," Camera Obscura's "San Francisco Song" and "Happily Ever After" by the Rosebuds are all superb and worth the price of the disc alone. And there's more rare gems from Superchunk, Richard Buckner, Destroyer, Spoon, The Clientele, etc.

4 out of 5 stars 15 Years of Merge Indie Rock.......2005-11-27

Outstanding value - 3 CDs for the price of one. Discs One and Two contain previously released material from Neutral Milk Hotel, Superchunk, M Ward, Spoon, etc. Disc Three contains previously unreleased material from Merge artists. The Camera Obscura and Essex Green tracks on Disc Three are my favorite songs from each band. This would make a great gift for a budding indie rock fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Merge.......2004-11-24

An excellent sampler of the North Carolina indie label at any price. All the big guns are here (Superchunk, Versus, M. Ward, Spoon) with some of their best stuff ("Anything You Want" Spoon, for example), but the pleasures of this compilation are in the lesser-known acts that shine through, such as the Ladybug Transistor, Camera Obscura, and Annie Hayden. Even if you're not completely familiar with all the bands (or only about half, like me), the formula means that you'll be rewarded for listening.

Strangely, or perhaps not so strangely, most of the material has aged well, and while the guitar is the noisemaker of choice throughout, the variety of styles is diverse. Witness disc two, which begins with Spoon, swings to a serene Ladybug Transistor tune (complete with mariachi horns), shifts gears to jazz-pop with M. Ward, then visits post-alt guitar territory with Versus.

Discs one and two are the hits; disc three is perhaps the roughest of the set, but there are still some fine tunes to be found there. Highlights from that disc: Camera Obscura "San Francisco Song", Spoon "Decora" (a cover of the great Yo La Tengo song that opens their "Electro-pura" album).

    3 out of 5 stars bargain.......2004-08-26

This compilation is like a deep, porous sponge with many dead ends hidden in the most unlikely places. I don't mean to say it's disappointing; actually, it's quite the contrary. Think in terms of economics. A bargain, a deal, a steal. You start to believe you're getting something for free. And in a society where capitalism wrings each paycheck dry, it feels good to enjoy the supposed best things in life. Merge has hit us with a collection of odds and ends...3 CDs deep, it's a healthy mixture of indie gems and pointless experimentation, all for the price of one CD. Know what you will about Merge, but all I knew prior to my purchase was that Merge is Spoon's label. That was reason enough for me to take a chance on three CDs for the price of one...and it should be reason enough for any indie pop-rock enthusiast who would like to discover a new reason to blow a paycheck on music by one or more of the Merge artists you'll discover through repeated listens to this compilation. The first two CDs give the listener a nostalgic retrospective, while the third disc is chock full of B-sides and songs recorded especially for this collection.

    Personal recommendations:
"Long Vermont Roads" - The Magnetic Fields (CD 1)
"Song Against Sex" - Neutral Milk Hotel (CD 1)
"Today is Gonna Be Mine" - David Kilgour (CD 2)
"Out of My Head" - M.Ward (CD 2)
    "Decora" - Spoon (CD 3)
"Some Small History" - Portastatic (CD 3)
"Happily Ever After" - The Rosebuds (CD 3)

5 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction to the band.......2002-10-12

15 Years is an impeccably selected retrospective of material previously available on the Sons' three major label releases and one of their independent efforts. What it is not is a simple repackaging. Most of the songs seem to have been rerecorded specifically for this release. For instance, Richard Chon is now credited with playing on many tracks that originally featured other fiddlers.

I am happy to report that the new versions are on the same level as the original recordings. Since these songs were originally recorded, the Sons have had a chance to play them over and over again in concert, so you can be sure they are even more comfortable with the material now than when they originally recorded it. So, if you're new to the band, don't feel you're getting inferior renditions. And, if you already have their previous releases, you get a chance to hear their new take on familiar material.

And, if you *are* new to the band, I can honestly say this is the new best place to start. It's a real good cross-section of what the band is about. I predict most who try it will feel compelled to delve deeper. On that score, I wish the liner notes had indexed the songs to their original albums to make it easier for people to know which additional albums to buy, but I suppose that information can be found with a simple song search.

Finally, three previously unreleased songs are included: "UTAH (With One Eye)," "Ghost Riders in the Sky," and "The Legend of Jake Kincaid." These songs complement each other well, as they are all of the haunting, driving, "outlaw" variety of western music. To be honest, it sounds like Jack was channeling Stan Jones on his pair of originals. "Jake Kincaid" is an especially old-fashioned, classic '50s-style western song. Jack doesn't normally write in that vein, so it's a particular treat.

Any down sides to this release? Well, I wish they had included "Silver Spurs" and "Something That a Cowboy Knows," songs co-written by Jack Hannah and currently only available on one of their independent label releases. The songs could have reached a wider audience that way. Also, Jack's got a new song about the Alamo--"Where the Very Same Cottonwoods Grow"--that he has recently debuted in their live show. I would have loved that. I believe it was written after this release was in the can, though, and I understand they have plans to release it in some form in the future. I hope we don't wait too long.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful presentation but not a complete collection........2006-06-20

Firstly the collection comes in one of the most artisitc and beautiful CD presentation boxes I have come across. It is presented as a heavy book (10x11 inches) with the CDs inside the back and front covers. The pages in between list the contents of the CDs & DVDs along with a full page of art corresponding to the disc number. The front and back covers of the book have a large E on them which is made to resemble the greek letter Sigma. This is probably in reference to the fact that this collection is the sum of Enigma's work.
The book is then housed and protected by another heavy carboard outer sleeze.

This box set is a great collection of Engima's work over the past 15 years but is in no way to be considered a complete or ultimate collection. Disappointingly only the standard versions of MCMXC A.D & The Cross of Changes are included. Shortly after the original release of these albums Virgin released limited editions with several extra tracks each. It would have been nice to see these extra tracks (7 in total) included on these 2 discs.

The DVDs are also missing a total of 5 videos. The absence of Out From the Deep is interesting. I can only assume that Michael Cretu did not want this video included on the DVD. All of the videos from the Voyageur album are also missing (Voyageur, Following the Sun & Boum Boum). These were produced in 2004 & 2005 so were certainly produced in time to be included on an extended release of Remember the Future. Finally the video for the recent single Hello + Welcome is missing. This last omission is probably because its release was close to that of this collection so there was no time to include it.

I also imported this collection from the UK division of Amazon at a fraction of the asking price of the US Amazon. Great value from the UK but a very expensive collection otherwise.

Most Enigma fans will probably own everything in this collection except the bonus disc produced by Rollo. The songs he has chosen have been completely re-produced using Rollo's own choice of electronic instruments. Personally this CD is disappointing and it is sometimes hard to figure out which song is being played. Rollo has made each track more ambient in style.

On a personal note Virgin/EMI have installed some kind of copy protection on the CDs which meant that they would not play on my computer which runs Linux. A windows machine ran the CDs fine. I object to a record company trying to restrict how I play the music that I have paid for. An upgrade to my linux system eventually bypassed their copy protection. Nowhere is it mentioned on Amazon.com or on the CD packaging that this CD may not play on some players.

The cheaper UK price plus the magnificent packaging makes this collection an essential item for collectors and die-hard fans. I will be wrapping my boxset in bubble wrap to preserve it for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive...but is it worth it?.......2006-03-04

Yes, I give this box set five stars simply because of it's immaculate presentation, not to mention the incredible music and visuals it contains. Save for one of the eight discs included, it's the supreme culmination of Enigma's career thus far. Frontman Michael Cretu displays his work proudly here, in a large, glossy book housing the first five albums, a bonus disc and Enigma's two DVD's (with each disc having only the corresponding album's cover artwork on them)

MCMXC a.D. - The one that started it all, the one that brought Gregorian chants into the mainstream, and one of the classic albums of the 90's. Upon its release, this kind of production was never heard, and it finally propelled Cretu into international recognition. Includes the megahit "Sadeness", as well as other gems, "Mea Culpa", "Rivers of Belief" and "Callas Went Away".

The Cross of Changes - The hugely successful follow up that includes Enigma's biggest hit ever, "Return to Innocence". Also worth mentioning is "I Love You...I'll Kill You", "The Eyes of Truth", "Silent Warrior", and their most underrated single "Out From The Deep".

Le Roi Est More, Vive Le Roi! - Enigma's most mellow outing, sounding like a cross between Deep Forest and Pink Floyd, it stands out as their most ethereal and atmospheric album. Though it's two singles were never hits, it was their best album to date (1996). Check out "Why...!", "Shadows In Silence", "Morphing Thru Time", "Almost Full Moon" and "TNT For the Brain".

The Screen Behind The Mirror - Probably the most unoriginal of the bunch, this album crosses the ambience of MCMXC a.D. with rock edge. There are more guitars here, although the overall sound goes back to the heavy beat-driven days of the first two albums. Olive's Ruth-Ann Boyle and European crooner Andru Donalds make their debut as the new voice of Enigma alongside Cretu. "Smell of Desire", "Modern Crusaders" and "Silence Must Be Heard" are the standout tracks.

Voyageur - This is the departure of the sample-driven Enigma, and for the first time we hear a truly original album. This one is less atmospheric and more electronic. It's abstract, but still accessible, and is the freshest Enigma creation to-date! I can't get over "Boum Boum", "Voyageur", "The Piano" and "Incognito".

The Dusted Variations - Sadly, this bonus disc (created especially for this set) is the one disc that disappoints. Yes, we get the latest single, "Hello & Welcome" (which is a real treat!), but then you get several non-Enigma remakes of Enigma songs. Faithless' Rollo is at the helm, and his creations sound like a collective blubbery mess. It sounds like an unmelodic droning of strings that never goes anywhere, as if Rollo is afraid to let the songs move and flow as they were meant to. The classic songs are unrecognizable, and even misnamed ("Endless Quest" is really "Find Love")! Listen to the new single, skip the rest.

MCMXC a.D., The Complete Video Album - This DVD (unfortunately in PAL format) was released after the first album. Great music, very dated videos. But still, it's worth seeing at least once. Plus, you get to hear the first album in 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS sound. A real plus!

Remember The Future DVD - This is every Enigma video ever made through 2001's "Turn Around"....except "Out From The Deep". Why Cretu left this one out is beyond me. Still, it's an impressive collection of the visuals accompanying the music. The classic "Return to Innocence" is the crowning jewel here, but "Gravity of Love" is a close second.

All in all, this box set is for serious collectors only. Fans will already own the albums and DVD's, and casual listeners are unlikely to fork over the staggering price of this collection. But if you would like to have this just to look at it, it's worth every penny. It puts Enigma on a pedestal, and rightly so.

5 out of 5 stars Great album and dvd.......2007-03-16

its a great dvd, mix a both greats artist. thx death row !!!

4 out of 5 stars I Bought Mine At Target .......2007-02-19

I bought my copy at Target, it's a good album but it does have a few issues.

All the bonus trakcs on disc one, (1.8.7, etc.) were not listed on the back but they were still on the disk, which is really neither here nor there, but it seems like with all the deathrow albums Suge, and whoever else helps to produce the albums cuts all the songs short toward the end. Snoop Dogg's G'z up H*** down for example, toward the end it sounds like "G'z up h*** dow..." a lot of the songs are just cut short, also that song sounds flat, like how it would sound if it were coming through on the radio. Also On the "extended version" of Let Me Ride, it's not extended, the version on "The Chronic" is 4:21, and the verson on this is 4:21, Suge just faded the end of the song out on this album so it sounded different.

The music is good, but Suge did a very poor job with the songs on this.

1 out of 5 stars Best Buy Version.......2007-02-13

Best Buy has now recalled this for that very reason.

(At least most of the stores in the bay area and Sacramento)

4 out of 5 stars BEST BUY MIXED UP.......2007-01-08

I purchased the Best Buy version and had the same problem. I purchased the regular version at Circuit City. Disc One had 17 tracks including the 6 exclusive songs and Disc Two had the original 14 tracks. Another error is that on the Best Buy version, Disc One: Track #8 Let Me Ride (Entended Version) is actually the original Let Me Ride taken from Dr. Dre's The Chronic album. If you purchased the regular version from a different store than you get the correct Track #7 Let Me Ride (Entended Version).

I think it's a decent compilation. I would recommend it for all the new fans.

3 out of 5 stars not bad for the price, but beware of some issues!!!!!.......2007-01-02

this is a great set, but who ever mastered all the tracks(including the dvd portion of video tracks)should be ashamed!!!. lets start with the audio cd portion...these tracks were not remastered at all!!!. plain & simple. basically all of them sound somewhat flat(though all are still in stereo)no richness or deep bass...kinda sound like less than the original masters...i.e. when the tracks were originally released like in 1992-1996, not the remastered versions released in 2001(some even sound like cheap mp3 internet files like how do u want it, california love, & snoop's g'z up, h*** down track, among others...i'm an audiophile and i know these things). as for the dvd portion the video quality is average(maybe a little above, but still average at best). you can tell of this because there are plenty of "blocky artifacts" throughout all of the videos like it was recorded on a homemade(but retail manufactered like philip's or sony, etc.)dvd recorder in the 2 1/2-3 hour mode(this dvd BTW is a single-layered disc, which means all the videos were heavily compressed, as these videos clock in at just over two hours. they could of been on a dual-layered disc for better quality). the dvd audio for the videos are in cheap crappy mono sound?????. no stereo suge?????. there very viewable & enjoyable, but at the same time how could they be so cheap. last but not least the distribution of these sets. who is in charge over at death row/koch records?????. these idiots are causing people to buy the sets twice...one at bestbuy & one at regular retail(yes all of the disc 1's in the regular non-bestbuy sets carry the 17 track bestbuy version, and best buy's disc 1 is the 13 track regular version)just to get the real collector's version of a total of 33 tracks. very dumb & stupid on the part of suge knight not to realize this!!!!!. i've wasted time and money tryin to get/put together the real bestbuy version of the set. stupid. anyway buy both versions, take the 17 track disc 1 out of the regular version and simply switch it with the 13 track best buy version, keep the original 16 track disc 2 best buy version intact, & keep the special best buy slip case & jewel case with the bestbuy bonus track names listed on them...and there you have the real-original best buy collector's edition version!!!!!. besides all the neglect & mix-ups this set contains, it is still a very vital collection, & the best one yet(and with all the rarities like g'z up, h*** down, pain, & the dvd of hard to get & find videos you just can't go wrong). for the price you get what you pay for i guess(57 total tracks for under $20), and thats probrably why there was no care or remastering done to this set.(in my case a great sale of $13.99+tax for each set...i bought 4 copies but have to return 2 because of the mix-ups). for what it is, i highly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars 60 Years 60 Flute Masterpieces.......2005-10-12

Everything this man does is great, so putting many years together in one place could only be the same.

      4 out of 5 stars There'll always be a Galway.......1999-10-10

Of course this is a 5-star production, but I deducted a star only because any one who has been collecting Galway recordings already has all or most of the selections on this CD. As with other artists, BMG has been repackaging earlier Galway offerings under many names and excuses; is the simply the latest (though certainly not last) in the series. The music is the usual mixture of short pieces that can stand on their own and movements that cannot out of the context of the larger works from which they are lifted.

Still I put this CD on as background music to a dinner and it worked just fine. So like most Galway collections, it makes for some lovely listening when doing something else or just relaxing. In fact, when your baby gets tired of those Bach for Babies sets, try Galway as a very nice substitute. Hey, BMG! How's that for a packaging idea?
