Product Description
The ETERNITY X albums surely deserves greater attention than most of the new Progressive heavy-metal bands, in a recently quite crowded genre (Both quantitatively and qualitatively). Each of them present a subtle blend of symphonic elements, powerful keyboards, fabulous guitar solos and modern rhythms. The first one called "Once Upon A Dream" (1991), the concept that presents the twelve astrological signs "Zodiac" (1993) and the third album "Mind Games" (1995) show a melodical heavy-metal band that is only very little marked by the both symphonic and Progressive rock influences that would be perceptible on the following one with the arrival of a full-time keyboardist. It has to be said that "The Edge" (1997) is an absolute masterpiece ! During both delicate or more energetic tracks, this album proves to be aggressive in its musical content, even though it respects at the same time the ears with very elaborate melodical lines. It can remind of a meeting between S! HADOW GALLERY and DREAM THEATER (Perfect instrumental technique, melodical beauty, varied vocals that alternate with great success aggressive and bursting moments…). The beauty of this major works in this style will seduce both Progressive rock and heavy-metal fans as well as those who appreciate mature and ardent rock music. The moving and expressive texts, helped by the extraordinary aesthetic and always perfect vocals by Keith SUDANO (Let’s mention the vocal similarities with Geddy LEE, Michael SADLER, Mike BAKER and James LaBRIE, or even Tommy ERIKSSON… Of AGENESS !) draw a painting of musical colours that describe the characters from the inside and beyond the edge of eternity…

As befits a movie set mostly in the late '60s and early '70s, this album, spanning rock, jazz and soul, is made up of tracks from that time; the happy surprise is how utterly smart the selection is. (David Shire's score is available on a separate CD.) With heavy irony, since the movie is about the hunt for a serial killer, the CD opens with Three Dog Night's cover of "Easy to Be Hard" from Hair ("How can people be so heartless? How can people be so cruel?"). This is in keeping with the overall vibe, which emphasizes the period's more sinister underbelly--not so much the flower-power vibe as the way the country crash-landed with Vietnam. The most startling pick may well be the Animals' apocalyptic 1968 epic "Sky Pilot," which includes a bridge that mixes diving-bomber noises, earth-shaking explosion rumble, bagpipes (!) and gunfire, before going off into romantic ballad mode complete with string and horn sections. Lynn Anderson's country-pop hit "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden" suddenly becomes a taunt, while those who only know Santana from his recent lite offerings will be shocked by the manic fervor and darkly sexual drive of "Soul Sacrifice," from his debut album. As for Donovan's psychedelic "Hurdy Gurdy Man," which plays a big part in the movie's narrative, it sounds positively terrifying in this context. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Bought it for one song and one song only..........2007-05-07

I bought this CD because I'm a Jimmy Page fan and I knew for a long time that he played on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man". When I heard the song in the movie I nearly jumped out of my chair. I never thought I would hear it again. So, that's really the only reason I bought the CD. The rest of the music is fine for that era, but I was far too young when all this stuff was going on. I was into the Monkees during this time growing up, and then we moved to the Mid-west where the step dad only listened to Country. (Ick) The other music takes me back only to the point that my mom used to listen to it on the car radio.
But, if you are familiar with this music, I'm sure it will be a trip down memory lane for you.

1 out of 5 stars Don;t bother.......2007-04-20

Many of the songs in movie are not on this cd for some reason. I thought it was kind of like the movie, listen or view it once but not again.

5 out of 5 stars Songs from the past.......2007-04-07

The zodiac soundtrack works well for those that may like a trip down memory lane. Films about the Vietnam War (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, etc.) will normally represent this time period's top 40 style of music fairly well, and the Zodiac soundtrack is no different. I think it almost goes a step above, however, because it not only gives us a view of different songs from the late sixties, but also some artists who were notable and famous as well. Miles Davis, Four Tops, Santana, and John Coltrane are just some of the many artists and groups featured on this soundtrack. It may not have an extreme connection to the film like some soundtracks do, but it surely is a nice hits list of great music from this time period. My Zodiac Soundtrack did arrive with a small crack in the back of the jewel case, but it is of little concern to me and I would not hesitate ordering a CD from Amazon again. I'm going to give it a five star rating without hesitation or regret.

3 out of 5 stars One disappointment!.......2007-04-07

Over all this soundtrack is good, but, the one disappointment I have is the rerecorded version of the song Brother Louie (my favorite song on the soundtrack). Perhaps it's a licensing issue who knows. If the rights of original recordings are not available then why use the song? Probably most people wouldn't notice or care.

5 out of 5 stars Zodiac Cosmic Sounds Forever.......2007-05-17

Believe it or not, I have the records - both monarual and stereo versions of this classic piece. I have been listening to it since 1969...and have forced and coerced many friends and lovers to listen to this...even used it to help my young son fall asleep.

I listen to it several times a week...and now, thanks to getting the CDS, I can listen to it in my car...and until the days prior to my death.

Listen to it in the dark for sure...listen to it while in bed with someone special...listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't think they'd have THIS one!.......2007-03-09

Fine assemblage of sounds befitting the 1967 scene. Some truly unique sounds from esoteric instruments, and some of the first uses of electronic
(moog type) instruments. Good music, narrated, not sung or rapped, one "song" for each of the twelve signs. And, if you are into astrology, you'll have more to talk about. (I don't know enough about it to critique it, but my own sign fits me fairly well)

3 out of 5 stars Zodiac - 'Cosmic Sounds' (Water) 3 1/2 stars.......2007-02-24

Recorded in 1967, but released on CD in 2002. Only album that was put out from this 'experimental psychedelic' artist. I assume it was a basically a one man project with back-up musicians. Only name I could find was Cyrus Faryar, the one who provides the well done spoken word. 'Cosmic Sounds' is okay. No masterpiece but decent enough to give a spin every now and again. Some snippets of this CD's twelve cuts have been heard in the background of an occasional Dragnet episode (like the one with 'Blueboy' + five other drug associated episodes they had), the film 'Riot On Sunset Strip' and several biker movies. Might appeal to fans of Timothy Leary, Tomorrow, Honeycombs as well as other bands produced by the late eccentric Joe Meek.

3 out of 5 stars Great to see on CD, but LP sound is better.......2007-01-27

It is really good to see some reviewers being honest about the sound. However, I imagine that few people have a turntable to say nothing about having a copy of the LP, although you can find it pretty easily and not too expensive. Just to have this on CD is a real good thing. It was considered pretty much exploito stuff at the time, but it was mildly interesting and worked well within certain radio formats. The music is a good example of the times.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Happy Leo!!!!.......2007-01-03

I've had the record for Cosmic Sounds for a looong time now and had despaired of *ever* getting it on CD. I was 5 when it originally was released but fell in love with it anyways. Was I estatic when I found it on a sister-site to Amazon. I promptly informed my cousin (another big fan of the album). Then it was simply a matter of hinting broadly and often until the CD ended up in my stocking this Christmas. It's just like I remembered it except without the scratches and pops from the old stereo. Lovely. It doesn't need to be played in the dark but I could use a good blacklight and some velvet fuzzy posters!!

Album Description

Serene waves of crystal bowl tones echo the beautiful musical harmonies of the constellations that Pythagoras called the 'Music of the Spheres'. CHORDS OF THE COSMOS fine tunes our entire body to the musical order of the universe with a deeply healing sound journey around the zodiac wheel. This first-of-its-kind recording provides a new level of therapeutic sound with harmonic chords for each astrological sign. It facilitates the alignment and balancing of the chakras and the auric field. The perfect healing companion for meditation, joy, massage and all healing arts.

"Deborah Van Dyke is a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. Chords of the Cosmos is a set of 12 deep overtone compositions tuned to the signs of the zodiac and Pythagorean progression. Each piece is designed for Chakra meditation to balance a specific body part. Meditation with this CD aligns listeners with the resonance of the cosmos.

This disc is pure overtone bliss. Deborah's techniques on the bowls are flawless. There is no need for looping, layering and/or processing. The bowls' natural overtone properties simulate those effects and stimulate introspection, relaxation and healing. Deep listening is a wonderful experience. It allows listeners to go to their "happy places" for ultimate relaxation.

This is a special CD from a special lady. It is the overtone CD among overtone CDs." Jim Brenholts, Music Reviewer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I liked it, but this is not for everyone!.......2004-12-30

I have done exercises of toning in the past with Quigong, and this was very similar for me. I found the tones beautiful and melodic, and simply that, sustained and harmonized tones. If that is what you are looking for, then yes, you may indeed enjoy this. While I don't know whether the cords used are balancing for the zodiac or of the areas mentioned, I do know that I liked the meditative properties of the drawn out harmonies for myself.

This album though, is not for everyone. The pieces here might be compared to the musical sounds made by a harmony of fine crystal glassware at dinner. For some people this style of sounding may be annoying at best, and unpleasant at worst. If you are looking for clear crystal harmonics, you may very well enjoy this CD. If, however you are looking for soothing, musical composition I suggest checking out some Dean Evenson and passing on the Crystal Bowls.

My advice: always listen to a few of the provided samples first. That is what they're there for!

5 out of 5 stars each tract a meditation.......2004-08-16

I think that Chords of the Cosmos is a wonderful resource for anyone seeking sustained meditative work. I also study astrology and enjoy selecting sequences of the different tracts to 'tune in' to the various notes revealed for each sign or season, what a great way to open one's consciousness to the subtle music of creation! And because a whole tract is dedicated to each zodiacal sign, one can create meditative 'sessions', such as for the four elements, the three qualities, or any array thereof.

Another example would be to arrange or program the tracts into the Chaldean order of planets (based on the signs that each planet occupies within one's own horoscope) to feel the flow of harmony or changes from the Sun to Mercury and Venus to Earth (the sign opposing the 'Sun Sign'), followed by a rendezvous in the sign of the Moon... then meditatively guide one's consciousness outward through Mars to Jupiter and Saturn using the harmonies of these signs of the Zodiac. As the Sun is the "heart" of our solar system model, this meditation could be considered a "heart-centered" approach for guiding the flow of consciousness from the source of light and warmth and then outward through each planet... and back again!.

The chord arrangements for each sign are beautiful, each tract is a meditation in itself!
I've read how Pythagorus studied number and notes with his monochord, how Einstein would play his violin for inspiration while solving his equations. _Chords of the Cosmos_ makes it possible to engage in similar meditative journeys, the possibilities are endless. With this gift one can literally craft their own meditative vehicle through the beautiful vibrancy of the crystal bowls, played in layers of harmony to resonate with the seasons of time.

5 out of 5 stars EXPLORING INNER SPACE.......2004-08-06

Pythagoras, Rudolph Steiner and other leaders in the field of consciousness have all talked of the connectivity between outer space and inner space, the macrocosm/the microcosm. Chords of the Cosmos is unique in its use of musical triad chords created with crystal bowl tones, that mirror the tones of the constellations.

Make no mistake, this is a seriously therapeutic CD, not intended for mere listening pleasure, although the serene, perfectly tuned chords are beautiful indeed to hear. But there is much more to this CD, that, to the uninitiated ear, may not be appreciated on first listen. Anyone interested in deepening their meditative experience will find immense value in using this CD to fine-tune their body instrument. And the more one works with it, the further one goes. Within the first five minutes I slip into alpha state and thereafter, far beyond.......

Chords of the Cosmos creates a bridge of tonal sounds that enable you to experience the subtle fields of energy of the constellations, while simultaneously accessing the deeper fields within your inner space. A remarkable tool for higher consciousness and healing!

1 out of 5 stars Should have listened for myself before purchasing.......2004-05-18

Should have listened for myself before purchasing the special price package. Traveling The Sacred Sound Current is pleasant and Chords of the Cosmos drives me and others who heard it... nuts.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CD.......2004-01-02

I do listen to this recording at least once a day - sometimes with headphones, sometimes I just let it play in the background. When I listen to it with headphones, I feel the sounds reverberating first in my head and then spreading throughout the rest of my body, re-arranging, harmonizing and aligning my energy field and by body from the top of my head, all the way to the tips of my toes. Then, I feel ready to embrace the day, balanced, nourished, strengthened.

These guys aren't very impressive really. But they DON'T suck. If anything, their few difficult to play parts are what saves them from total crashing destruction. So, as players I can give them credit, as song writers.....bah.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of Zodiac.......2005-01-24

Although this is nothing more than the Tattooed Beat Messiah album without the speechs, I'm still gonna get it. Zodiac Mindwarp was the most underrated metal artist ever. In my opinion he should have been a lot bigger than he was. Buy this album. In fact buy all of 'em while you can. These are tough to come by.

5 out of 5 stars Will never go out of style.......2004-12-14

Many years after its release, I still love this album. Its got that "heavy metal dance" sound that so many record labels still seem to be searching for. If you take this too serious, you might not like it. If you approach with an open mind and want to have fun, it rocks. "This is a special car baby - two accelerators, no brakes!" Yeah! Personal bonus - I saw these guys on their tour supporting the release of this album. I remember 3 things: 1) They were really loud 2) They clearly loved what they were doing 3) They did a completely amazing cover of Wham's "Baby, I'm your man." It sounded way better than the Wham version!

5 out of 5 stars The way rock should be.......2003-10-27

What a great, straight ahead rock album. Every song on it is great. Any volume setting less than 10 is not doing this record justice. Skull Spark Joker, Backseat Education, Tattoed Beat Messiah, and of course Prime Mover are definite high points. I even got to see them live...WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!! And they opened for GNR.

      5 out of 5 stars "Cutting-edge" improvisations on Stockhausen's music.......2003-10-26

The 12 Stravinsky-style miniature melodies of "Tierkreis" are probably Stockhausen's most easily approachable composition. The melodies composed originally for music boxes in the early 70's to be used in "Musik im Bauch", a scenic piece for percussionists and a large birdman containing music boxes in the belly. All these melodies were later used in "Sirius", and there are arrangements for several instrumental combinations. This CD, released in celebration of the Composer's 75th birthday, presents two realisations of "Tierkreis", or rather two "jam sessions" on "Stockhausen standards." The sound of the original boxes emerges then and then, and the original melodies were played mostly as paraphrases. And the use of the term "intuitive" in the liner notes has nothing in common with Stockhausen's use of this term in the late 60's. I wonder what the Composer thinks about this birthday gift. However, considered as modern jazz ("European style", in spite of Mr Svoboda's nationality), this CD deserves 5 stars. Mike Svoboda has worked with the Composer before in the "Licht" operas as well as in concerts, and he was the main soloist in a CD of the Stockhausen Edition ("Music for Trombone and Euphonium", Stockhausen-Verlag CD 44). Svoboda's homepage refers to earlier versions of "Tierkreis" prepared by him: for trombone and piano (1988), for trombone and percussion (1991), and for trombone and brass ensemble (1995). It is lamentable that these versions have not been released on CD.

        Album Description

Hailing from Providence, these ex-members of Arab on Radar, La Machine and Bossman play music…the kind that inspired Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore to buy them drinks the last time they played Brooklyn. Made in Mexico came into existence when Rebecca Mitchell moved to Providence from Oklahoma and was asked by Dare Matheson and Jon Loper (members of Providence's psychedelic freak-out ensemble La Machine) to start a band. The rehearsals went strangely at first. Everyone tried their best to ease the tension by playing music they mutually agreed was good: Captain Beefheart, Devo, Chrome, Amon Duul II, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Sleetmute/Nightmute…and that's when the writing began. The band debuted before a packed show at the Safari Lounge in downtown Providence, with Schneider wielding his trademark Travis Bean aluminum-necked guitar. As far as the people in attendance were concerned, everything they loved about these artists was back, better than ever. One sarcastic! fan yelled out "Arab on Radar!" Schneider looked out into the crowd and replied, "Made in Mexico!" The fan replied, "It's magic!" And it really was.

With just a casual interest in astrology, Mary Lou Williams created her 1945 Zodiac Suite as a series of character sketches, musical portraits of friends from each sign that she would debut on a weekly radio show. "Aries" is for Ben Webster and Billie Holiday, "Taurus" for Duke Ellington, and "Libra" for Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk. The pieces include piano solos, duets with bassist Al Lucas, and trios with the addition of drummer Jack "The Bear" Parker. The suite is both a remarkable exercise in extended composition and an index of Williams's varied palette. Her mix of blues and boogie roots and strikingly modernist harmonies is sometimes similar to Monk's, while her lighter, impressionist playing can evoke Claude Debussy (and the way Debussy colored the piano music of Bix Beiderbecke). The cumulative work, though, has a warmly sustained lyricism that can only suggest comparisons with Ellington. The Zodiac Suite would assume more ambitious forms, with a chamber orchestra setting for the entire suite later in 1945 and a large orchestra adaptation of three movements a year later. Dizzy Gillespie recorded three movements with his big band in 1957. But the intimacy of these original recordings is very special, with Williams effectively blurring the line between composition and improvisation. --Stuart Broomer

        Album Description

Smithsonian Folkways proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original Asch Records release of Mary Lou Williams' work, Zodiac Suite. Performing solo and accompanied by bassist Al Lucas and drummer Jack Parker, Williams crafted these pieces as a series of dedications to fellow musicians born under each astrological sign. This 12-part interpretation of the zodiac was crafted so each movement comprises a set of jazz tone poems. Six alternate takes, mastered from the original acetates, are featured on this reissue. "Irresistible themes...blending sophistication and intimacy." - DownBeat

        4 out of 5 stars 13 monsters.......2005-05-23

i wonder why they have that weird looking cover pictured. mine looks nothing like that. anyhow, the music on here is of the highest quality, especially considering it was all written by a female. it is all very pleasant to listen to, the playing is first-class throughout, and the compositions are exceptional. i bought this at the smithsonian folk festival a few summers ago. i'm not really sure why i chose to give it four stars. maybe it deserves five.

5 out of 5 stars One for the stars.......2003-06-28

Mary Lou Williams is a pianist from the galaxy of pianists who came from the Greater Pittsburgh area - Earl Hines, Erroll Garner, Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Costa, etc... she had a pile driving left hand at the piano and a wide-ranging imagination when it came to writing music. This album is another fine exmple of her thinking. I don't think she ever received the fame she deserved...as a musician or as a composer.

5 out of 5 stars Pisces waltzes in a dream..........1999-09-15

A delightful collection of "miniatures" in which Mary Lou Williams - not an expert at astrology - accurately captures certain attributes of the various signs by observing them in people she knew & making them into music, much as Virgil Thomson did in his Portraits. Taurus plods along heavily. Pisces waltzes in a dream. Scorpio is sneaky. Cancer is a Debussyan moon. Fun for fans of jazz piano & maybe more than that for the astrologically-inclined. Sound quality is rough, to say the least, but it's like peeking at Mary Lou's private journal.
