Amazon.com essential recording
The only ones more ardent and fanatical than Phish lovers are Phish haters, and of course, both parties support their opinions based on the exact same criteria. However, as the band matures and their sound ripens, the naysayers' stance becomes increasingly difficult to defend. Ghost, their seventh studio effort, is the quartet's most balanced and well-rounded studio collection, one that finds the middle ground between their wild stage forays and their more recent toned-down records while intensifying their ever-growing "cow funk" elements. Along the way there is room for concise song craft and angular complex journeys; thick funk, high-tempo romps, and quiet reflective passages; nuggets of lyrical wisdom floating in the usual sea of nonsense; cerebral prog-rock majesty tempered by visceral one- chord grooves; simplicity and psychedelia; instrumental precision and loose rambling. The twists and turns of "Guyute" will be familiar to the congregation as will the deep funk of "Meat" and bookends "Ghost" and "The Moma Dance." "Water in the Sky" takes a classic country progression and infuses it with a propulsive, almost Latin rhythm. Early-period albums may have better (and lengthier) jams, later albums may have better songs, but no other Phish album blends both aesthetics as well. --Marc Greilsamer

Rolling Stone
Phish exploit their subtlety like never before, with airy, uncluttered grooves and relaxed vocals that sound as if they were delivered between catnaps.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, SPEACHLESS.......2006-03-14

Story of the ghost is not my favorite album by Phish, but I think it may be one of the best put together and original creations by Phish. I love this album in so many ways- musically it is original and unqique and the album flows very well. When im talking to my other friends that listen to Phish, this is definately one of the first album that comes up debate wise- some love it, some dont. I want to say that when I recommend phish albums- this is one of the first to come out of my mouth. I loved this album and you probably will too!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album, But Check Them Out Live.......2006-01-16

First of all, anyone who compares Phish to ANY OTHER BAND (especially Wilco) is not someone you want to be listening to. There is not one other band out there that sounds like Phish. Phish is THE GREATEST jam band to ever play. If you want proof of this claim, you need to buy their live albums. No other band, though some come close IN THEIR OWN WAY, can touch what this band has accomplished in live performance. All their studio albums are well-made and musically sound, though their first albums are the best. This album is in the middle of the pack. The rule for Phish is for every four minute album version song, there are versions twice as long (and twice as good) recorded live. Also, the live albums capture their ability to cover any song (such as Loving Cup, Roses Are Free and Bold As Love) they want to play and do it justice. Their Halloween shows always include the band covering an entire album of another band. Simply put, they're really, really good.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Phish Studio Albums.......2005-08-31

As far as Phish studio albums go, I guess I place them into 4 chronological categories: the early years (Junta, Lawn Boy, Picture of Nectar), the mid-years (Rift, Hoist, Billy Breathes), the later years (Story of the Ghost, Siket Disc, Farmhouse) and the post hiatus period (Round Room, Undermind). Story of the Ghost may not be the one Phish album I would take with me to a deserted island, but it's definitely the best of the later period and beyond. Granted, most of these songs were enormous live, especially in the summer and fall of '97 when they were brand new and awesome, but Phish somehow managed to contain these songs in the studio in a manner that doesn't seem stale or over-produced. These songs exist in two realms: one as a short concise cohesive studio entity...and in another as monstrous live improvisational jams that have no relation to this album.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, generic music.......2004-12-24

This album sounds like every other jam band in the world.

Bland, samey songwriting for song after song. No fresh ideas, nothing innovative, just real good musicians playing well. That's fine for cover bands and such, but where is the creativity and vision? It just isn't here. Thats why Phish falls far, far short of bands like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Flaming Lips, and Wilco. They just lack any kind of coherent sound or songwriting ability.

There's nothing original or interesting here. Big thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars The Must Have Phish Album.......2004-10-12

If you are already a Phish fan, Story of the Ghost is a necessary album to add to the collection. If you have never heard of Phish before, Story of the Ghost is a worthy buy for any music collection.
The album features exactly what the title says, a story of the ghost. Each song leads into one another musically and lyrically. Some feel that the album isn't as successful as other Phish albums, but I disagree. The album may be a little different than most, but it tells a great story. Some songs are shorter than others, but some points in the story are stressed more than others. Phish is known for their funky flare in music, and Story of the Ghost is exactly that. Some people state that some songs on the album are better than others, but singling out one song eliminates the entire flow of the album.
The album starts out with Ghost, with somewhat of a ghost story feeling. The next song, Birds of a Feather, brings up day to day issues of social relationships with a funky guitar flare. Next follows, Meat, which brings back the topic of ghosts in a different context. Guyute follows, telling the story of Guyute the pig ending with a long jam. Guyute is a great song to see in concert due to the room for improvisation during the jam portion of the song. Song number four is Fikus explaining a dream, shortly, but sweetly. Next is Shafty which brings us back to the ghost story explaining the situation of hell. The following song is Limb by Limb, which is a popular song amongst most. After that comes Frankie's Song, which pokes at the 1980's saying of "Frankie says relax," but in a more serious matter. Brian and Robert comes next, one of my personal favorites, which gives a song to those who may be a little different than most. Following is Water in the Sky, which picks up the pace. Song number 11 is Roggae, which encourages the idea that everyone has there own purpose in life. Wading in the Velvet Sea follows, which is yet another amazing song to hear in concert. It takes more of a serious tone, helping to conclude the album, another one of my personal favorites. The album continues on a light note with The Moma Dance, which confuses the words, "the moment ends" with, "the moma dance." The album ends with what is called End of Session, which basically just concludes the entire story and jam.
If you want to truly enjoy this album for what it is, put aside a few hours and listen to it all the way through. Enjoy the entirety of the album; listen to the story. Phish is a clever band, and would only name the album Story of the Ghost if there really was a story to be told.

5 out of 5 stars Holiday music with that extra magic - creepiness!.......2007-01-26

If you are in a holiday mood, but are heartily fed up with Irish (or even worse: Mariah Carey!) Christmas songs, then you might want to consider this album. It is not a soundeffect album, nor is it program music. A final touch is that it is not cheaply produced, as some more traditional holiday albums.
The music conveys a feeling of cold, dark, and immensly lonely winter. The Christmas is there, but there are undertows of older and more sinister rituals, and whispers call the more unwary listeners to join in...
This album could be a very good way to spice up the celebrations.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant Nox Arcana CD!.......2007-01-03

Nox Arcana's versatility has made them a tough act to follow. Whether it be a musical journey into the foreboding land of vampires (Transylvania) or a sinister carnival with a bloody history (Carnival of Lost Souls) or any of their other forays into gothic imaginings, Nox Arcana has taken each concept and breathed impressive, symphonic life into it. Their CDs truly are mini symphonies, with astounding musicianship and intricate orchestrations.

In Winter's Knight, Nox Arcana presents a moody, elegant collection of holiday-themed songs that captures the more mystical, meditative side of Christmas. The CD's strong medieval/classical flavor is refreshing, particularly since most Christmas music nowadays seems dominated by more modern songs. Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski offer great new arrangements of classic pieces like "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" as well as many of their own moving compositions, such as the memorably haunting "Crystal Forest" and the chilling piano-dominated "Evening Star." Guest vocalist Michelle Belanger also contributes a lovely interpretation of the holiday standard "Past Time With Good Company" and Jeff Endemann's vocal work on "Coventry Carol" is likewise a highlight.

While most Christmas music is, unfortunately, either infantile and annoying or overdone, Winter's Knight provides a refreshing change of piece full of musical elegance and mystical beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Music to be enchanted by.......2006-12-25

As mesmerizing as falling snow, this poetic and magickal soundscape creates a wonderland of lavish treats befitting the Holiday Season. Haunting and sophisticated, there's a certain luster to these songs that reflects the gothically romantic luxury only Nox Arcana can deliver. The addition of neo-bard, Jeff Endemann's spellbinding voice on "Coventry Carol" delivers an extra gift of warmth for those chilly Yuletide evenings. The original score by Vargo and Piotrowski interspersed with classic carols and a booklet of eye-candy artwork by Joseph Vargo makes this a perfect fit for any Holiday Collection, so fill your wassail cup, pull up some moonlight and breathe in the wonder of Winter Knights.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good, Different.......2006-11-04

The idea behind this CD and the music itself are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant holiday music scene. Dark and evocative, it pushes aside the sugarplums and saccharine we're all used to. However, the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. It's all done with computers - the choral parts are lacking in fullness, I can't always tell what the stringed "instruments" are supposed to be, and rather than cadences that would give finality to the piece, the tracks often come to a sudden stop. 3 1/2 stars.

Album Description

"Ghost Story" hits harder than thee previous Phideaux release "Fiendish" but continues in the same vein of intelligent, emotional and melodic space folk rock. Treading the same path as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and a bit of early Bowie, Phideaux is a delightful update of the so called classic rock of days gone by (but not forgotten)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Solid release from an excellent musician.......2004-05-13

I am a fan of progressive rock, especially some of the non-traditional bands: Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, Ambeon ... and some of the standards: Genesis, Spock's Beard, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Marillion, etc. Phideaux fits right in with my collection. It is definitely on the non-traditional side, and although I am heavily reminded of Porcupine Tree, Phideaux has a sound all his own. The production quality is first rate, and the musicianship is excellent. If you enjoy the bands I have listed, you will enjoy Phideaux.

My favorite track is the opening song, Everynight. The guitar has a strange distortion that fits perfectly in this song. The rest of the tracks are also outstanding ... with Universally being the only mellow track on the album. I have only owned this CD for a short time, but the complexity of the music leads me to believe I will get quite a lot of plays out of this CD.

I am glad I discovered Phideaux on the Dutch Progressive Rock Page ... will definitely continue to purchase his releases. I also recommend Fiendish, a slightly more ethereal flavor than Ghost Story and equally enjoyable.

Sixteen songs as diverse and varied as the band members themselves. Ranging from zombie horror surf pop to swaying lullabies to knife wielding thrash-out anthems to neon city pub crawls and acid tripping sex romps, it's clear Australia's Goons feel no restrictions in bringing their unique blend of musical creativity to life. Keeping to their love of stripped back production and their loathing of hard work, this CD carries an organic honesty throughout. These guys deliver the kind of beats that make you wanna get catnip freaky on the nearest square foot of naked dance floor.

5 out of 5 stars wow! wynton marsalis continues to grow!.......1999-08-11

with the fifth release in the swinging into the 21st century series, we find mr. marsalis continuing to explore his compositional skills. these two ballets could be easily partnered with "jump start & jazz" from a couple of years ago. the first "sweet release" reflects charles mingus' experiments with jazz ensembles from his jazz workshop era. mr. marsalis reminds us clearly that jazz is dance music, with a swing designed to get bodies (even booties) moving! the lcjo is in fine form here, even with the constraints of a ballet score. the emphasis is, of course, not so much on the soloists, but on the ensemble, creating a group swing. this is excellent! the second "ghost story," is much more thoughtful and introspective, as one might expect. this is not a leap-in-fright ghost, but more reminiscent of a haunting melody on a rainy afternoon. the smaller ensemble captures the mood and atmosphere of the piece wonderfully. as with all ballet music, this makes you want to see how the dancers moved with the music, how it was choreographed, to see what images go with the sounds. not having seen, but only heard, this music inspires the imagination to paint its own pictures to accompany these soundtracks. mr. marsalis is a first-rate composer, continuing to grow and deepen. these are great steps along that journey.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14

This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.

Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.

Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.

Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Out-performs The Film..........2006-04-30

Though being far from an abject failure, the filmed version of Peter Straub's GHOST STORY was sorely lacking in the kind of 'turn-all-the-lights-in-the-house-on' chills that the book contained. But the moments that it did succeed are owed to three components: some of the most striking visuals of any movie in this genre, a compelling and memorable performance in the lead by woefully underappreciated actor Alice Krige, and this magnificent score by French composer Philippe Sarde.

Combining the lush romanticism of classic Hollywood movie scores, while balancing it with the kind of nerve-jangling flourishes and motifs of the best horror B-movie scores, Sarde created mood, atmosphere and an all-around sense of dread that was so effective, you could almost swear that the producers swiped this music from a better, much scarier movie. However they came to select him as their composer, it's a damn good thing they did...

An absolute must-have, for collectors of film music scores or just remarkable music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly and properly creepy!.......1999-10-30

Phillipe Sarde was the perfect choice to compose the score for this, one of the screen's most atmospheric horror films. And I salute the producers, who had the good sense to seek out his work. The score is both melancholy and angry, telling of the sorrows of mistakes made long ago, and the atonement that awaits. Well done! See the film, too ... but take my advice and skip the novel.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! Lush, romantic, passion to the nines!.......1999-06-23

I have been an avid fan of Phillipe Sarde since first listening to the score of Tess of the D'Urbevilles. This I highly recommend. From this I found the soundtrack to Ghost Story. It is chilliing, haunting, a style that harkens back to the great composers. Would love to know of other albums=soundtracks released by this artist.

4 out of 5 stars Erie and pleasantly "old fashioned".......1998-10-30

GHOST STORY is a great soundtrack. Philipe Sarde is a great composer. That's that! Anyone into film music should investigate Sarde. THE BEAR is another great composition of his that I never get tired of listening to. His music is beautiful and he is a composer that American filmmakers should be begging to score their projects!

    Album Description

Although the idea originated sometime in the Summer of 2003, it wasn't until last year that the band really started to take shape. The brainchild of Jarrod Alexander (The Suicide File) and Jonathan Dennison (The Promise), When Tigers Fight is simply hardcore in it's most pure and uncomprised form. Without allegiance to any one scene or stodgy point of view, the band has been free to create without regard to any past formula or pre-conceived expectation. "Ghost Story" is the first collaboration with guitarist Ken Olden who, along with vocalist Mike McTernan, was a driving member of Washington D.C.'s Damnation A.D. The great chemistry among this new line-up is evident and seems to resonante throughout every track on this album. The best way to describe this record is that it is truly the sum of all it's parts. Being able to draw comparison with any of the members former endeavors all at the same time without being a re-hash or imitation of any of them. The band originally started as a bi-coastal side project but has since changed it's gears dramatically. In support of this new album, When Tigers Fight is committed to touring full time so don't miss them when they get to your town.

5 out of 5 stars Just Simply a Doggone Good Album.......2006-11-25

This is a new project made up of Ken Olden and vocalist Mike McTernan, both of Damnation AD, a band that sounds an awful lot like "Black Flag" to me. And that's a compliment of the first order. The other members of the band are The Promises' Jonathan Dennison and Suicide File's Jarrod Alexander. Together, these four are an outstanding group.

Great songs on this album are "Harmony Cafe" and the catchy "No Way", which I just love. Both these songs showcase Mike's raspy, sing/talk style. The songs feature lyrical content of mature issues so that, along with skillful musicianship, make "Ghost Story" a must have album for me.
