I bought this CD for my daughter but ended up loving it as well. The lyrics are positive and uplifting. The music is top notch.

Not just a regular band, but much much more.......2006-12-21

This is not just some band that a few kids decided to do when they were bored, they had a mission: to share God's word. When you listen to the songs, they have a deep meaning that, if you're in the right mood, will stir you internally. Songs:

As you can see, I really enjoy the song "Hero." If you listen to it, you'll know why. I think it just sounds so real; that that's really what goes on in schools (especially middle or high school) and we don't stand up for the ones who don't for themselves. It just makes me think how much better our world would be if we were all "Heros."

I also enjoy the song "I Belong To You." I can so relate to what is being sung. I do feel the way it says; (life is hard just to get through, I'm glad that I belong to You...) I mean, I don't feel like that a lot, but when I do, I know God will hear my cry in the middle of the night. Great meaning, and I love the guitar in it.

All the songs are good, just some slightly (or greatly) better than others. If you've never heard this CD or don't own it, I'd strongly advise it, for it not only provides great listening music, but an inspirational meaning within the songs.

Even mom likes it.......2006-10-27

I discovered this group when I heard their new song "Stand in the Rain" playing on KLOVE, the Christian radio station. I then realized they sing a lot of songs I recognize. They reminded me of some bands I listened to back in college. They have a good sound but a positive message. I'm in my 30's and I appreciate them a lot. Whether you are an adult going through hard times like divorce or a kid just getting through high school, you will definitely appreciate their music. I downloaded all their available cd's off Itunes. They repeat songs on their albums which means you will sometimes get multiple copies of a song if you purchase all their CD's but they tend to be a different remix so it's still ok to have both.

I LOVED it!!! I just got addicted to Superchick by a friend and once I listened to the cd I was hooked. The songs are great. There was only one that I didin't like but that's ok. My favorite one is number 9 "Hero" It sends out a strong message and it's dramatic. The thing it's cristian but it's still good. For any teen girl. Buy this cd and you won't regret it.

I love this CD! The message is awesome and it sounds great too. Many people tell me that they don't want to buy this CD because its almost all remix (1 new song)but that's a mistake. These remixes are so much better than the originals, in my opinion.

1. One Girl Revolution- 3/5 Not my favorite but it has a good beat. Tricia sings great but its not the best on here.
2. Get Up- 4/5 one of my favorites! Great sound here and Max Hsu producer has a solo at the end. Its so much fun to listen to! (also great to exercize to)
3. Me Against the World- 4/5 This is one of the bands hits! You've almost surely heard it on the radio at some point. When you mention Superchick this song comes to mind for people who don't know the band well. Catchy tune, good lyrics
4. Barlow Girls-4/5 This song ROCKS because KJ-52 raps at the end! Plus its so much fun- better than the one on Karaoke Superstars in my opinion. Great abstinence lyrics for teens but fun song for everybody. If you've heard of the Christian rock band Barlow Girl, this song was written for them.
5. Stand Up- 3/5 For those of you who had heard "So Bright" on Last one Picked, you will like this. Its the same song but you wouldn't know it. The extra verse is awesome where the guys sing it and it puts a little hard rock into the former pop version.
6. I belong to you 2/5- This is not my favorite song on the album, but Superchick's weak ones are still great! Its a good song but I think it sounds similar to the one on Last One Picked. Still, its a nice break from the beat of the CD and the Brock sisters sound great.
7. Princes and Frogs- 4/5- This is a song sung only by the guys that was written for Tricia and back on Last One Picked it was called "Song 4 Tricia (Princes and Frogs)" Good lyrics- good beat. About 2 minutes longer than the other one and a lot more developed.
8. One and Lonely 5/5- This song is GREAT!!! I love it and its one of my favorite on the Cd. However, the last track (9) still wins for my fav. Great message for girls but fun for everyone.
9. Hero 5/5- Ok I have to say this is my favorite. It is awesome. So dramatic but if you can handle that its a great message about trying to prevent suicide and the young people standing up. "join the fight for what's right..." I love it. I think its Matt who raps at the end and its fun to hear! He sound like Eminem to me...

This is a great CD. Its fun for everyone and a great gift- I've given it to a lot of my friends. Buy today- you won't be sorry! Hope I helped with your decision.

I could babble on for ages about how cool this album is but I won't. Let me just this, this is the poo so take a big wiff!!! For Fans of Gunners, Motley and Poison it takes the best of each. They would have been huge if it wasn't for grunge killing cool Rock - N - Roll. Worth It alone for the classy(cough cough) brilliance of Love Song. Ok so there was some babbling but if ur an Glam metal fan get it or regret it!!!!!!

More Walker than Coward.......2001-06-16

Let me be out front about this. I liked the Divine Comedy just the way they were. The sly lyrics and percolating pop of "Casanova," for instance, was precisely my cup of tea. And I really liked it when Neil Hannon played Noel Coward to Ute Lemper's Gertrude Lawrence on the latter's "Punishing Kiss," on which the pair perform two duets and Lemper solos on yet another of Hannon's compositions. Neil Hannon is a witty guy who also happens to be an acute social critic. None of this has changed. I like "Regeneration" precisely because it puts Hannon's acid wit and killer sense of irony on display, as on "Dumb It Down," without forgetting his `60s pop roots ("Perfect Love Song" is perfectly named). But the album does seem to take the music a step further onto the dark side, and I think I know why. On "Punishing Kiss" Scott Walker produced "Scope J" for Ute Lemper. That Neil Hannon listened and learned should not surprise anyone. After all, many have noted his indebtedness to Walker's vocals; now a case may be made that he's gone back and studied Walker's music as well. Play "Note to Self," for instance, and then listen to "Scope J." The musical atmosphere is uncannily similar without being imitative. Then go back and listen to "Tilt," Walker's last solo album. The lushness of the arrangements, the frequent reliance on strings for emotive effect, the abstract but strangely suggestive lyrics-all presage Hannon's metamorphosis on "Regeneration" (note the sonics on the title song in particular). However, whatever their sources, the songs here--and who could not relate to the lover's despair on "Lost Property?"--remain much more accessible, not to mention playful, than anything on "Tilt" and are bound to find a larger audience. They deserve to.

Reinvention.......2001-05-09

In 1995, London radio was inundated with songs by the Divine Comedy, a group fronted by Neil Hannon, an English fop with an ear for melody and a weakness for irony. This being my first trip overseas, I bought some CDs, basking in the delight of my new discovery. At home in L.A., with better light and a clearer head, I found the songs of the Divine Comedy mere imitations of better bands (The Smiths, The Magnetic Fields). In fact, the only original aspect to Hannon's band were their appropriation of European cabaret and music hall. I began to actively hate them. Which is a way of saying that Regeneration, their latest, comes with baggage to overcome. It does, with style and substance. Scaling back the cabaret, shot through with sincerity instead of wit, Hannon comes up with his finest batch of tunes to date, the best being "Note to Self", an artistic credo that encroaches on Radiohead turf, "Lost Property", a materialist's nightmare, and "Regeneration", about the thrill of - damn right - reinvention.

Brave New World.......2001-04-04

With their last proper album being called "Fin De Seicle" and the new album called "Regeneration",The Divine Comedy must surely win awards for apt album titles.After the release of "The Best Of..." album,Neil Hannon realised he'd taken that aprticular stlye of Noel Coward influenced,fully orchestrated pop to it's limits.This album is a great departure from that type of music and is a very brave step.ultimately it's a step I think they manage to carry off quite well.

The new sound see's Hannon backed by a conventional six piece band.Conventional in that they play rock music.The sounds of the orcherstra are still to be heard,especially on the initial tracks.It's almost like he tries to break us in gently to the new sound of Divine Comedy.Songs like track 3 "Perfect Love Song" could easily have fitted on the c.d. "Casanova",with it's poppy retro Beach Boys sound and clever witty lyrics.By the time we get to the 4th song the mood,tone and sound of this c.d. changes.The c.d. is produced by Nigel Godrich of Radiohead fame-and his influence becomes more evident in the rest of the tracks.The arrangements in these songs are scaled down to far simpler forms.The mood of the lyrics are far darker.It becomes a conventional alt/rock album.The songs go from being 3 minute pop tunes to being 5/6 minute songs,that are far less commercial. Unlike many albums these days I think the second half of the c.d. is much better then the first.Songs like "Eye Of The Needle" have a stark Kid A feel to them.In fact for me songs 6,7,8, are the highlight of this c.d."Love What You Do" is the first single and starts off with the words 'Living isn't easy'-this will tell you something about the mood of this song.Great rhythm to this song and keyboards of all sorts are the dominant instrument here.The next song sounds like it could have been taken off "The Bends" c.d.It's a slow song with a quiet acoustic feel.The next song starts of with a bit of blues/folk acoustic-the change between this song and the songs at the start of this c.d. is startling.Piano and strings gently accompany the chorus line.The only thing I wonder about this whole new sound is Hannon's voice.He has a very distinctive voice and one which is associated with a particular type of song.It takes a while to get used to the fact that he's now singing emotional alt rock-and I'm not sure if his voice is strong enough to carry this off.

The songs get more and more low key and slower as the c.d. progresses.By the end it's almost going at snail's pace.This is a very brave move by any band to radically alter their sound quite so dramatically.This total change I feel is worth one extra star alone-the fact that they carry it off quite well also helps a great deal.

The sincerest form of flattery........2001-04-01

This album sounds like a cross between Radiohead's "Kid A" and Pulp's "This is Hardcore" -- ironic Prog rock sung by someone who sounds like they're standing in front of the mike only because they've got nothing better to do at the moment. Granted, if you're going to wear your inspirations on your sleeve, you could do a lot worse than the two brilliant bands listed above, but somehow you've got to let a little originality show through. As it stands, "Regeneration", despite a few fantastic songs ("Bad Ambassador", "Love What You Do", "Mastermind") was DOA on my turntable -- cause of death: Influence Overdose.

A new direction - lots of promise.......2001-03-26

Whenever Neil Hannon comes out with an album, one is usually treated to clever, catchy pop tunes full of massive orchestral arrangements with humorous, witty lyrics not heard since the days of Noel Coward or Cole Porter. On all DC's prior albums, that was the case. On Regeneration, Hannon takes a step in another direction while not abandoning his roots. The massive arrangements are abandoned in favor of a little bit more experimental production ala Radiohead (note: the producer's the same), but the witty lyrics and pop hooks are still in tact. Songs like Perfect Lovesong illustrate this with such where he writes of writing a song "with a divine beatles bassline and a big ol' beach boys smile." Other highlights inlclude Bad Ambassador, which may not be a far cry from Fin De Siecle's "Thrillseeker," and the album's finale, "The Beauty Regime." It's a shame this album will probably not see the light of day in the US, as Hannon's songwriting is very much at its peak.

Divine Comedy singer and songwriter Neil Hannon has always been a frustratingly erratic talent. At his best, he is a ballad writer and singer without peer among his contemporaries, capable of producing songs (such as "The Dogs & The Horses" or "Sunrise") of which Tom Waits might be proud. At his worst, he is an insufferably smug perpetrator of bumptious novelty hits, notably the fatuous sing-along "National Express." Following his career is like witnessing the spirits of Scott Walker and Jonathan King fighting for control of the same mind. Regeneration hopefully marks the point at which Walker finally triumphs; there is, happily, not a single joke, punch line, or zany sound effect to be found. Hannon has taken his inspiration from his previous best effort, A Short Album About Love, but replaced the rueful gloominess of that record with a heartfelt optimism: "Perfect Lovesong" and "Love What You Do" are guilelessly joyful. And even when anger manifests itself on "Dumb It Down" and "The Beauty Regime," there is the righteousness that comes from fighting the good fight. The tunes and arrangements are exquisite throughout. Hannon is back in top form. --Andrew Mueller

grows slowly.......2005-10-02

the back cover band photograph worried me when i first picked up this cd in the record store. the band were not dressed in their usual designer suits and italian shoes; they had on (gasp) jeans and leather jackets. uh-oh...something's not right. this is The Divine Comedy, right? i slipped the cd into my car stereo and held my breath. the first song began..."ok," i thought " some new production values that we have never seen Neil use before...more emphasis on acoustic guitar and some electronic atmosphere smeared around the edges..not terribly horrible, i guess." next was "Bad Ambassador" & "Perfect Lovesong" which were two really great little songs that seemed to capture the spirit of the Divine Comedy that i knew and loved. but there was still something not quite right; i just couldn't put my finger on it. i continued to drive around as the remaining tracks played out, and i just grew more and more depressed while listening to it. the songs had no life, no spark. where was the outragous pomp and smug charm of the old Neil Hannon? and what happened to his sense of humour? it sounded like all the charm of the band had been sucked out to create a "we're in our Radiohead phase" kind of album. groan. "another one bites the dust," i thought. and shelved the album, saddened by the fall of a great songwriter.
but i ended up giving it another shot...and then a new song stuck out to me this time: the haunting "Eye Of The Needle." i wasn't completely sold, though. but when i took it out days later for another spin, i was surprised to find another tune had crept up on me. the cycle went on like this until i finally gave in and decided that Regeneration wasn't all that bad after all. although it has it's share of really bad songs that i have to skip ("Note To Self" & "The Beauty Regime."), i know can appreciate the album as a whole. it's a new approach to making an album and writing songs than they've done on any other of their albums. i miss the charm and i miss the humor and i miss the big brass shuffle of some of the older material. but i can respect this new direction. also, since this album was delayed to be released in america (where i was living at the time) i had to buy the japanese import version which contains some of the album's strongest tracks: "Edward The Confessor" and the absolutley brilliant Beatles worship of "Soul Trader." it might have been an easier adjustment for me (and other listeners) if these songs would have found it's way onto the proper album release. but oh well....

Passionate and Impeccable.......2005-03-27

I have heard most of Neil Hannon's work and, in my opinion, he is one of the great classicists of modern popular song, breathing the same rarified air as Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and Scott Walker. (So they're all English men, so what? They have the best actors, too.)

This album is on a par with the rest of his releases. It is somewhat more forthright and less ironic than most of his previous work, but that often happens to people when they have children, which I believe he did, around the time of writing these songs. One can't be a condescending young rake forever. And his singing continues to improve: his lush baritone, which was always strong, is by now technically impeccable.

In short, the writing, the playing, the arrangements, the recording are all of the very highest order. If you like literate, arch, slickly crafted English popular music, then this is the absolute cream of the crop.

Listen to This.......2004-11-17

I'd like to tell to divine's followers that this album take some time to be appreciated. Used to glorious movements of Casanova, Fin du Siecle and others works by Hannon, this could be less funny and distant, but it's true. The production is perfect, sound sounds. I can say that if this album weren't in the Divine Comedy discography the Divine Comedy could not be considered a real music band, but just a very very talented bunch of people. Talent is not always enough, talent with a such beautiful album is - really - enough.

briliant....after a while....so be patient.......2003-08-22

I have to say that I initially HATED Regeneration. I thought it was whiny, too much like Radiohead, and boring. But something happened after the third listen...I fell deeply in love with this album. Perhaps it was what was happening to me personally; perhaps I just wasn't listening to it well-enough the first couple of times. But this album is absolutely sparking underneath, like a tarnished piece of silver. The lyrics are brilliant, the music hypnotic, and Hannon's singing superb. I love the fact that Divine Comedy CAN play anything from these serious tunes to the novelty-esque stuff of yore. Bravo to Mister Hannon for this slow musical seduction of the aural sense.

A letdown.......2003-02-14

I understand that artists need to evolve; there's no point in being formulaic. And obviously, the title indicates that Neil Hannon wants to move in a new direction. However, I found myself bored and disappointed with this album by The Divine Comedy, especially after the sardonic and intelligent chamber music I fell in love with on albums like Promenade and Casanova. If you're new to this band, be advised that they didn't always sound like a decent (but dull) alternative rock group, they produced some very witty and memorable songs about foreign films, books, seafood, meeting God while stuck on a ferris wheel, and, of course, love. Granted, this isn't a terrible album, but it didn't do for me what my first listen of Casanova did. I will miss the old Divine Comedy.

This 1982 recording is a spectacular meeting of strong personalities--all distinguished veterans of the free-jazz revolution--commemorating their shared roots in the music of Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols. Monk and Nichols were close associates in New York in the '40s, but while Monk's compositions eventually achieved the status of jazz standards, Nichols's equally challenging music remained in relative obscurity until recently, a turnaround inspired largely by the efforts of the musicians on this album. Steve Lacy was an early champion of Monk's music, while trombonist Roswell Rudd discovered Nichols's innovative compositions when they worked together in the '50s. In the early '60s, Lacy and Rudd had a quartet devoted to playing Monk's music, while Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink have a knowledge of the music as extended and profound, first recording a Monk tune on Eric Dolphy's Last Date in 1964. Bassist Kent Carter completes this stellar group, which touches on some of the craggiest peaks of jazz tradition. Fully-realized interpretations.......2000-01-05

Roswell Rudd does more than just play notes with his trombone on this recording. His trombone speaks, grunts, laughs, sings, wails, etc. His remarkable personal style pervades the sound of the whole group on this totally engaging recording. The group's interpretations of these classic pieces really explore the nuances and the result is delightfully fresh-sounding and multi-layered.

Christmas in Velvet in my opinion is one of the most exciting Christmas CDs I have ever heard. The musicians are phenominal, lush harmonious sounds, high sopranos and low basses. They have some very intriguing arrangements out there. It's so much fun to listen to, you'll want to tell you family and friends.
