The renaissance R&B group from Minneapolis is back with another classic release! Livin' the Luxury Brown is a continuation of the R&B, rock, jazz alternative, hip-hop sound that the band developed in 1989 with their breakthrough album Meant to Be Mint, which included the hit single "Pretty Brown Eyes." Mint Condition continued to grow their loyal fan base with songs like "U Send Me Swingin'" on the album From the Mint Factory and the song "What Kind of Man Would I Be," their platinum single from the gold album Definition Of A Band. Including their last release, Life's Aquarium, Mint Condition has sold over 3.8 million records.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Livin' the Luxury Brown Myself.......2007-06-05

I have been a loyal fan of Mint Condition since Pretty Brown Eyes. They have a sound that is truly their own. I wish the industry would give them more attention. This album shows their range. I love the sound of a live band. They give you jazz, r&b, soul, funk, and rock. I have seen them perform live several times and they bring it every time. Stokely continues to blow my mind vocally. He has so much control in his voice. I'm sorry, but there are not enough artists out right now who can blow like that on a cd and live. This album is their best by far. I can't wait until their next release.

5 out of 5 stars An Unhearalded Classic.......2005-09-23

When I saw that there were so few reviews for Livin' Like Hustlers, I couldn't resist putting my two cents in. The debut album of Cold 187um aka Big Hutch, KMG, Total Kaos, and Go Mack is a true gangsta rap classic in the same vein as Straight Outta Compton, Rhyme Pays, and It's a Compton Thang. While not as well known as these predecessors, Livin' Like Hustlers is one of those rare albums that both pushes the production envelope to new heights and takes risk in it's delivery with almost perfect results.

To truly appreciate this album, several historical and technical facts must be stated. First, this album was not, I repeat NOT, produced exclusively by Dr Dre despite what liner notes may indicate. The majority of the production and sample selection on this album was in fact done by ATL themselves and the result is a smoother, more "pimpish" quality to their beats. While the production definately had the clear influence of Dre, the overall sound does not reflect Dre's production at the time. Because of 187's silky high-pitched delivery and KMG's gravelly monotone, samples from both jazz and smooth r&b sources worked particularly well and set ATL in a class entirely their own.

Second, ATL are NOT from Compton like their other Ruthless labelmates. They're from Pomona and their attitude was far less of a "gang" mentality than NWA in their lyrics, despite the association. These guys clearly had their own identity and vision for what they wanted to do. And while songs like "Murder Rap" and "Another Execution" certainly represent the more violent side to street life, they are more in the vein of "someone tested me so I had to show him who's boss" rather than killing everybody in sight. In fact, the opening ramblings of KMG on Murder Rap are spoken to 187 stating "Yo 187 they tryin' to get you for a Murder Rap and you ain't even like that". Another difference in content is the clear attempt to try to win the ladies over by sweettalking them rather than calling them out their names. In truth, compared to other Ruthless releases, there is very little profanity from the emcees.

Finally, this album was released early in 1990. At the time, the personnel problems in the NWA camp were unknown to the general public. Livin Like Hustlers was released prior to the announcement of Ice Cube leaving. When fans noticed Cube did not appear on the supremely impressive posse cut "The Last Song", the official word became that Cube was working on his solo album. No one really knew that "Cube solo" meant that he was no longer with NWA. In fact, it may not have been clear to even NWA or ATL at the time. This uncertainty meant that this was the last true project released from Ruthless prior to the NWA breakup.

So what does all this information mean in regards to me calling this album an "unhearalded classic?" It sets up the listener with the mindset that they need to have when first embarking on the journey into the minds of Above the Law on their first listen. Whether it's the hardcore rantings of "Another Execution" and "Just Kickin Lyrics" or the political commentary of "Murder Rap" and "Freedom of Speech" or the pimped out mackery of "Ballin'" and "Flow On", the listener is treated to a variety of different subjects and styles that keep on entertaining. And with first time uses of beats like Quincy Jones & Bill Cosby's "Hicky Burr" or the theme from "Ironsides", (which Kill Bill fans will instantly recognize), ATL shows that it wasn't only the East Coast that could dig in the crates. In fact, many of the beats foreshadow future hits such as Lil Kim's "No Time". The album is truly ahead of its time but unfortunatley became overshadowed by the impending supernova breakup of NWA and the eventual arrival of the Lench Mob and Death Row camps.

5 out of 5 stars great murder album.......2005-08-09

this is a great cd thats crueley underrated.and yes its part of that great hip-hop time line of 88 to 98.though unless your a east coast artists you probably wouldn't make a top 40 list.wich is sad cause the east coast aren't the only ones that added to hip-hop.hell as a matter of fact the west, south, and midwest inovated it while the east coast was still doing the same thing over and over again.either way this is a great rap album that should never be forgotten.

4 out of 5 stars Old school cool........2005-04-11

I first heard Above The Law on the "Pump Up The Volume" movie soundtrack, and the track "Freedom Of Speech" was one of the stand-outs on that disc. This is just one of the great forgotten albums of the early 90's, much like Da Lench Mob's "Guerillas In Tha Mist". If you're a fan of N.W.A., checking this out is a must, as Dr. Dre produces and drops a few rhymes of course. The delivery and flow from these guys is excellent. Overall "Livin' Like Hustlers" is dope, right down to the "Last Song".

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC!!!!.......2004-11-19

Just like I said people. A Classic! This was Dre in is prime fo'real. With the help of DJ Yella... There have always been strength in numbers. ATL was droppin the type of s... that just kept ya in a ZONE. Those beats and ATL's flow was to much to handle str8 up! Though they were talkin' dat GANSTA sh..! All of them have college education!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The original g-funksters.......2004-08-10

Above the law are: Big Hutch, Kmg, Go-Mack and Laylaw, who, on their first and best album,"Living like hustlers", told us gang stories about their hood, with an original style. Driven by a funk-filled feeling and mood, the album, with samples taken from old seventies soul records, never got too much attention from the hip-hop audience at that time.

Nevertheless, this was a real good album, which was produced by Hutch and D.R. Dre. And it was released on Ruthless records. It had a great posse cut called "The last song", where all of the old N.W.A members ripped a verse. ( except Ice Cube ) The album had only ten songs, but it was still outstanding with funkt joints like "Untouchable, Living like Hustlers, Another execution and Menace to society".

Some say that the golden years of hip-hop are from 88-93, and only keep their eyes on the eastcoast, they tend to forget about the west. But if you really down with hip-hop you oughta like all kind of styles of rap. Above the law was a group who created the G-gunk and inspired D.R Dre and warren.G to use that funk sound they later would be known for. If you don't have this one in your hip-hop collection, you better do your homework and go out and buy "Living like hustlers", because this is a classic that can't be overlooked.

Solo album from the former Canned Heat guitarist is full of what Walter Trout does best--grungy, gritty guitar riffage set to killer grooves. That pretty much describes the best stuff here, including the opening title track, the rolling "Let Me Know," the funky "Say What You Mean," and the closer "Prisoner of a Dream," which adds horns and organ to the mix. Trout's also played with British blues elder John Mayall, and it shows in his solo work--he's got that blues-rock mix that is so typical of British blues, and so appealing when done well, as it is here. He's not quite as good at ballads; "Sweet Butterfly" wanders, and "Fool for Love" doesn't have as strong a base as the more uptempo material. On the other hand, "Through the Eyes of Love" shows that Trout can play guitar clean as well as gritty, and "Nothin' but the Blues" is solid from beginning to end. A strong entry overall, and perfect summer listening. --Genevieve Williams

This was my Firsr Trout CD, I will surely buy more after this!

5 out of 5 stars It don't get no better!.......2004-10-11

I remember when that strat looked new!!! Small venues in LA with Canned Heat... absolutely awesome! And this man has only gotten better. Nobody works harder at entertaining a crowd with what they came for, hard driving blues played as cleanly as I have ever heard. Do yourself a favor, buy the CD, sit back, close your eyes and feel what Walter can do!

5 out of 5 stars His second Best studio album!.......2001-12-18

This guy is unbelievable on guitar! you only get a fraction of what he can do on his studio albums, Live He will blow your mind!
although I think "Live Trout" shows more of how capable a guitar player he is, this is definitely a great album! I think "go the distance" is just a little bit better than this one but dont get me wrong this is a must have as well!
the title track has the coolest and most fluid intro, but the whole album rocks!
if you like the trout's whole rock/blues thing, check out Howard "Guitar" Luedtke and BLUE MAX He has kind of the same grungy rock blues thing going on, and just as much energy!

5 out of 5 stars His best album (hard to believe he could get any better).......2001-01-05

Critics have said that Walter Trout plays too many notes. True, there's a lot going on in his solos, with notes coming at you faster than you could imagine, but they do have feeling, and are clear. Almost nobody out there can play as fast as Walter, and none can play at that speed as cleanly. The rest of the band, although good, is clearly designed around him. Anytime you listen to a Walter Trout album, you are in the presence of true greatness, so allow yourself to be pulled in. This is not background music.

If you buy this album, you will realize that I'm not over-stating his skill. There's a reason why he's quickly gaining in popularity in the States, and is a show-stopper at blues festivals. He and his band play long sets and with great intensity. God help the band that has to follow him.

There's one sure way to decide ahead of time if you'll like this album. Do you like a harder type of blues-rock? If yes, ANY Walter Trout CD will be a great purchase. If not, his stuff may be a little too much to digest. Not for the easy-listening or Britney Spears crowd.

I saw him play live in Cleveland recently, and it's even better that the studio recordings. Trust me, you have never seen someone work an electric guitar the way he does. It's a lot like watching Arnold, in the movie Predator, mowing down half the forest with an M-60.

I practice all the time, but I'll be 150 years old before I can do the same things with my Strat.

1 out of 5 stars Stuck in a rut........2000-12-26

My first purchase of a Trout CD. If not for one major annoyance, I would have given this at least four stars. The problem? This guys solos are stuck in a rut. Each song starts off solid with a bang, but when the solo comes and the hammer-ons/pull-offs are piled on top of another, it ultimately becomes unlistenable. Eventually, you begin to realize that all the solos sound the same and take their toll on the overall project. It's a shame, because overall the group has a good sound and Trout has a fine Strat tone. This CD had potential. Unfortunately, Trout hasn't quite figured out that sometimes less is better.

2 out of 5 stars When a good live sound meets studio production.......2005-10-11

E.U. and most Go Go bands should always a live experience. This album is what happens when a local style of music gets a little national airplay and then someone thinks they can translate that live sound and energy into a studio recording. This album sounds produced...over produced. It sounds like on many tracks there was someone in the studion saying "wow, we can do that? well lets try this and this and that!" Missing the mark of capturing the energy and feel of Go Go music.

The best recording of Go Go I have ever heard are live. Usually off the board no less. What is missing in this album is the energy, the banter with the crowd and the feel that live recordings give you. The only one that even sounds vaguley like Go Go is Livin' Large, but even that is studio polished in a wierd way. The only one worth anything on this disk is "Shake Your Thing" and that is only because Herbie Luv Bug took the beat of Go Go, the sound of E.U. and shaped it into a hip hop song....so therefore it is not Go Go. Since almost every song has a different producer the album is an incohesive mess.

One track on this album says it all "Come to the Go Go." Yes, go on down, cause this recording is sterile and E.U has done much better. You want to here a good Go Go recording? See if you can find yourself a copy of "Go Go Live at the Capital Center."

EU is one of the stalwarts of '80s house in DC, and this album is an excellent introduction, as well as an evergreen house party / weekend bbq favorite. If you like Digital Underground, de la soul, or Fresh Prince (think "summertime"), you'll love EU.

5 out of 5 stars A Lot of Jive.......2005-08-25

This is an excellent collection of blues tunes done with classic renditions. The pace is slow & easy with blues that makes you shake your head back & forth an inch at 4 a.m. when you feel low & the bottle's hitting fumes. John Lee Hooker smokes on "The Right Time," "Come on, baby, Hold my hand tight as you can, squeeze me & tell me I'm the one you love." Dinah Washington recorded "Blues for a Day" in 1945. It sounds great with this 1997 release and Washington packing each phrase with feeling, "Don't drift too far, daddy, Stick around so that you'll be near. You don't need to go out, daddy cause I got everything you need right here." The track has some luscious sax dripping wet with emotion. Blues guitarist Pee Wee Crayton cut the smoking instrumental "Blues After Dark" that sizzles with his dreamy guitar in 1948. Pinetop Perkins' recorded "After Hours" for the Blind Pig label in 1988 with his piano crying soulfully. Big Maybelle recorded "You'll Never Know" in 1954 for the OKeh label and aches convincingly. Saxman Jimmy Coe with James Palmer on an insurgent piano does his party talk over the 1953 recording of "After Hours Joint." Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth" from 1950 touted death as the great equalizer, "Don't care how great you are, don't care how much you're worth, when it all ends up you got to go back to Mother Earth." Big Joe Turner cut "Nobody In Mind" in 1947, "Give a chick a dollar, next time you got to give her 5; See the chicks ain't out for nothin', boy, but a lot of jive." This is an excellent blues collection! Enjoy!

Listening to this CD allows me to leave my "regular world" stress behind me so that I can just sit back and listen to something different, but enjoyable. You probably wont hear him on the radio, but you will like it. Listen to the samples provided on this web site.

4 out of 5 stars SEE ALSO - - -"BLUES ON BLOND AND BLOND".......2003-11-19

I BECAME A FAN AFTER LISTENING TO HER ON THE 'VARIOUS ARTISTS' TRIBUTE TO DYLAN. HER TRACK (TEMPORY LIKE ACHILLES) IS ONE OF A KIND AMID 11 OTHER GREAT BLUES ARTISTS. ALL THE OTHER TUNES KEEP SPINNING AROUND IN THE SUB-CONSCIENCE, BUT HER'S ALWAYS RISES TO THE TOP. ITS THE FIRST ONE I GO TO WHEN I POP THE CD IN.

    4 out of 5 stars A GREAT SONGWRITER-GUITAR PLAYER.......2003-03-08

There are about 6 excellent songs here. LIVIN' ON LOVE is the best selection, a rock tune. MEMORY LANE is a good easy listening ballad. Crazy is excellent, with a very catchy rock n' roll beat. BENDING LIKE A WILLOW TREE is an excellent progressive blues song. HAPPY WHEN YOU'RE UNHAPPY is a good number. So is TORN IN TWO. Other songs are probably good, but I can't remember them. Debra, along with the other Debbie--Debbie Davies-- may be the best pop artists you will ever hear. I am thinking about their CDs, since I have not seen them live. CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THE TWO DEBBIES!!

4 out of 5 stars The studio does not capture her energy.......2002-09-22

You should see this girl live! I saw her in Charlottesville, VA, and she tore the place up. She is hot.

3 out of 5 stars Great musician, great vocalist, mediocre lyrics.......2002-01-18

I agree that Deborah Coleman should be getting more recognition than she has. She's a wonderful musician with a distinctive voice. And the arrangements on this album are quite good. For that, she gets five stars.

But when it comes to original lyrics, she has a major deficit. Most of the songs suffer from a surfeit of cliches and hackneyed ideas. The opening lines of Crazy, for example ("You say yes, I say no/You say stop, I say go"), were lifted from Lennon and McCartney, who used them as parody. No parody here. No surprises, either.

4 out of 5 stars With her looks and ability, who wouldn't be "Livin' On Love?.......2001-08-21

I will keep it brief. She is a fantastic blues artist with a truly refreshing and honest approach to he music. She should be getting the recognition that somehow always seems to find young white "wunderkind" from the sticks. It is truly amazing how many truly talented Blues artists get overlooked beacuse they are not young and white. But anyone familiar with the history of the American music business knows about it's racist past and how race has always played a role in record company decisions. Even today you can still see it. It is a lot slicker today than it used to be. Even black record company executives are doing it. It appears that the common denominator what demographic has the most disposable income? How many ways can they niche market to the same demographic? How many different ways can you market profane lyrics with violent content and no redeeming virtue.

I vote Deborah Coleman as one of the most overlooked and ignored of the recent crop of Blues musicians. SHe puts on one fantastic show. I suppose that is why Gibson is using her as a sponsor for their fantastic equipment.

    1 out of 5 stars very elementary.......2006-05-31

I purchased this album when it first came out years ago. I had liked one particular song that I'd heard on the radio and ran out and wasted my money. That song was really the only one worth listening to. And now that I'm older...more mature...I don't care for that song anymore. This was a boring album and the group doesn't show any real lyrical talent. One of the guys in the group had a little talent, but it pretty much ends there...which is why nobody has heard of them and never will.
