About the Artist
Since 1990, Nod has been releasing music which runs the gamut from experimental to conventional yet always wonderfully astray. The Rochester, NY-based band is led by "Scrappy" Joe Sorriero on guitar and vocals, and rounded out by Tim Poland on bass and Brian Shaffer on drums, as well as occasional 4th member, the mysterious Hugh Edwards.

The Nod muse is a many-hued beast — simultaneously funky, crushing, and just plain spaced out. There is a Shaggs-like innocence in their execution, which shouldn't be mistaken for indifference; precious few rock units become as intimate with their sound as Nod does with their creepy as all get-out caucasoid funk, which swings like Lynfield Pioneers fronted by Drungo LaRue Hazewood.

Levitating somewhere just above lo-fi, Good Night Sleep surfs easily from genre to genre, with the requisite charm of intact first-take stumblings. The opening track, "Old Hotel," is dreamy and groovy pop, with spacey, doubled vocals and overdriven yet mild mannered guitars. The strange folk of "Walk the Little Man" has Scrappy Joe singing: "You are my baby/and I love you/but you're crazy/So am I/Poke each other in the eye," in his hypnotic fairy tale-teller voice. Drunken dub debauches collide with fuzzed, electric Fahey fingerings across a skifflesque shuffle - all in a day's work for one of the only working rock groups with a truly original sound.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Great CD that works.......2006-03-10

I got this CD for free with a purchase of some yoga equipment. It sat on the shelf for a while and one evening, while having dinner, I decided to put it on for background music. It has some sounds I wouldn't have expected (cricket noise, etc) but after a while listening to it, both my husband and I were more relaxed and I was feeling a bit drowsy. The funny thing is even our pets (a dog and a cat) seemed to be sleepy. I have used it a couple of times to help me relax before bedtime and it has always helped. I have not used it while I sleep but a friend of mine who has sleeping problems did borrow it and absolutely loved it!...now she has her own cd and takes it everywhere with her. If you have problems sleeping, or relaxing enough before bedtime, give it a try, you won't be dissapointed!

Didn't help at all.......2003-12-19

I really wanted this recording to help me achieve deep sleep, and before using it I felt confident that it would. Unfortunately, after having this disc on during the past three nights I must report that it has not affected my sleeping patterns at all. I continue to sleep rather lightly, occasionally waking, and feeling tired and unrefreshed in the morning. Perhaps this recording has been beneficial for some, but don't expect it to be a guaranteed panacea for your sleeping problems. Most cable and satellite broadcast companies have a variety of music channels available, and I strongly suggest that you try leaving a New Age channel on at a low volume when you go to sleep; that will probably be every bit as helpful as this disc.

Good choice to help you fall asleep........2003-09-30

I bought this CD along with the Classical, Ambient and Soothing of this series. Of these four, the Natural is my favorite. Due to some family stresses I had started having problems getting to sleep, staying asleep wasn't an issue. I have a CD radio alarm clock that will repeat so I use it, it's right beside the bed. Since I never get to the second track from the beginning, I now and then start with track two. I tried to rotate the four CDs but seem to come back to this one as the favorite.

I like that there are not birds squawking at you. Don't get me wrong, I love birds, have two parrots and feed the wild birds every day...but at night I don't want random screeches interrupting my attempts at peace.

Have to travel for work this fall and plan to take this CD with me.

What a treat for Nature Lovers who can't sleep...........2003-03-01

There are many, many, nature sounds CDs in my collection, so I thought I would give this a try to help me with my occasional sleep problems. Very nice results. You can count on it.
I recently took it on a trip to Hawaii and a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking and shopping. Nice lavender bath is perfect with this...

It put me to sleep!.......2002-07-23

Admittedly, I would have never gone out and bought this CD, but it arrived as a bonus gift with some Yoga DVD's I purchased. I just happen to suffer from frequent insomnia and will not take sleeping pills for sleep, so I end up doing a lot of reading. Curious to see if this CD would work I popped it into my CD player and settled in for the night. The music is pretty monotone with some cricket and wave sounds mixed in, but I fell asleep and slept well! I tried it over a course of two weeks and slept well each and every night! I now use it only when I'm having trouble getting to sleep and each and every time it's proably not 10 minutes into the CD and I'm alseep. I haven't heard it in it's entirety, yet so it must work. I can't explain how, but I am sleeping better now that I use this CD.

Beautiful Christmas Music.......1999-12-11

We first heard this CD on NPR while returning home from a business trip. We ordered the CD as soon as we could. The music is as close to perfect as choral music can be. The songs are short, so the pace changes appropriately. Most of the selections are familiar Christmas carols with a few surprises. We've sent copies to our friends to enjoy.

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Comatose.............2007-05-18

My father and grandmother died this year. My father left me and my brother the family business, my girlfriend ran off with another guy, AND my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Can we say STRESSED?! This CD collection brought tranquility back to my nights. Four hours of music, uploaded on to an Ipod, set to repeat once equates to a full night of restful sleep. I don't know if it's real or psychosomatic, but it works for me.

From King Henry through the early 18th century, the best vocal music of the times. I was so taken by the earliest material that my a capella group learned several of the pieces and have performed them in many venues over the years.

If you like the sound of early music, this is a must-have.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. I periodically keep my 5 month old granddaughter overnight and was looking for something that I could use to rock her to sleep. The instrumentals on the album are extremely soothing, and the melodies flow seamlessly from one to the next. By the time the album ends, my granddaughter is in a deep sleep for the night and I am totally relaxed, too. This bedtime ritual has been so successful that I am ordering copies of the CD as gifts to new parents. I recommend it to others who are looking for an alternative to lullabies that can be sing-song rather than soothing.

Track 1 is good, Track 2 is not relaxing at all!!.......2005-05-15

I have to agree with the other reviewers who have said that the 2nd track (Music for Sleeping) startled them awake when it came on. It is loud and uplifting, not relaxing at all. It felt like the alarm clock was going off. But I think the first track is really good, and I was asleep before the end. So as someone else suggested, I burned just track 1 onto another CD and it works out fine. DON'T BE FOOLED by the sample of track 2 that you can listen to on the website, it is NOT representative of the actual track. Overall, I am not sorry I bought it because like I said, the first track puts me right to sleep. I would suggest not paying alot for it however, as only part of it is useful - do like I did and buy it used from one of the marketplace sellers for under $10 (including shipping and handling).

Best meditation CD!!!.......2002-12-22

I've been having stress related sleep problems for over a year. My doctor recommended meditation. I had no idea what to buy, so I bought 10 different meditation CDs. While the other CDs had nice meditations, this CD was BY FAR the best for sleeping. There is only one meditation track on this CD, and it is unusually long (30 min). It is the perfect pace for slowly drifting into sleep. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone with sleep problems. The only (small) problem with this CD is the second track, which is just music. It is dramatic and wakes me up after the great meditation. I usually program my CD player to just play the first track and I'm thinking about copying the first track to another CD.

I had been taking medication to sleep at night, when I put this CD into my routine, I have been able to reduce the medication to almost none. This is a great way to naturally get into a relaxed state so that sleep comes easily. John's voice is soothing and relaxing!

since i purchased this CD a year almost a year ago, i have had tremendously relaxing nights of sleep. i find that on nights i do not listen to it, i either don't get a good 'deep' sleep, or i am not able to awaken when my alarm goes off. on days when i really need to be up early in the AM, i put this cd on the evening before and it gets me into my rem sleep like magic allowing me to awaken feeling refreshed and not so quick to hit the snooze. definitely worth a try if you're looking for a good night's sleep.

very relaxing cd.......2000-01-28

I found this to be very helpful for two major reasons. First, the emphasis is on relaxation not sleep so the pressure feels lessened. Second the visual images are lovely... the only negative issue is that the back ground music could be lower, however, it didn't interfere to any great extent....nor did the second part of the tape that is all music. I think that this is a wonderful tape especially for those of us where sleep evades us because we are unable to relax
