5 out of 5 stars I Went There and I'm Glad.......2007-03-04

Although it's their fourth studio album, this just happened to be the first one that I scooped up. I was prompted to buy this because of how much I loved the track "Maybe Tomorrow", which I had discovered on the Wicker Park soundtrack. I'm really glad that I bought it. Although it's not my favorite Stereophonics album, it is excellently produced and shows them going in some new directions, that lead up to some of the experimental sounds that can be heard on Language, Sex, Violence, Other? Along with "Maybe Tomorrow", Jones and crew have put out some cool tracks here. "Help Me" is a rocker that really pushes some of their rawness to the test. "You Stole My Money Honey" is great in the fact that the alt-country flavor is there along side Jones' screeching vocals. Then there is the orchestrated "Rainbows and Pots of Gold", which shows that they as a band are willing to try out something that they really haven't done to this extent with the use of unconventional rock instruments. I'd have to say that my favorite though would have to be "I'm Alright"(You Gotta Go There to Come Back)" due to the fact that this is their most exploratory sound yet to date. The lyrics are seductive also. Great tune and all in all, great album.

4 out of 5 stars what's all the negative reviews about? eh?.......2006-01-31

the stereophonics have always made good acoustic rock sounding sounds on previous albums they were filtered in here and there espically on J.E.E.P but this is there next album and i must say i don't agree with most of what the other reviewers on amazon are saying "so what is they've mellowed out" if it's good who cares? this is a fantastic stripped album with great melodies and hooks [jones's playing and singing are superb]
check out "getaway" "nothin' precious at all" too excellent tracks that are up to the standards you would expect from the phonics...
the singles they chose to release from this album were good choices
madame helga" being the rockin' head twistin' stadium rocker
maybe tomorrow being the morning chorus dawn song that draws you in
"since i told you it was over" being the song for the lighters ablaze
this album starts with a ear grabbing song "help me[she's out of her mind]
and doesn't stop till the previous song and single i mentioned
the stereophonics surely buttered their bread with this album
and what i hear from their new album they went back too the "performances and cocktails" days of hard edged rock

the stereophonics are a fantastic band and their not just a band that does songs that go up to eleven..kelly jones can write beautiful melodies and witful words that makes you think of a summers afternoon with a glass of wine in your hand relaxing
PEEEEERFECT

4 out of 5 stars I bought this album because I liked "Maybe Tommorow".......2006-01-16

and that stands as my favorite track on the album.

I very much enjoyed the whole "garage" feel to this album, and it's mellow energy... if that makes any sense. I think this album is best if you are relaxing and just looking for good entertaining music. I would buy another Stereophonics CD.

Reason I gave it a 4?

Because I want to leave room to give a better score for any future stereophonics albums.

5 out of 5 stars There's a reason "Maybe Tomorrow" has been on every sound track in the last year, it's that good!.......2005-11-18

This album is seriously amazing, especially the single "Maybe Tomorrow" which has to be one of the best driving-pensive-songs in recent history, yesterday it inspired me to just get in my car and drive, which I did, to Wisconsin. I just think they have something special, it's the perfect soundtrack song, and that's why it's on like 100 soundtracks! Great work from a great, prolific band.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Don't start here!.......2005-08-27

I Absolutely loved Cocktails, Word Gets Around, and JEEP...especially JEEP! I was so excited about this band and for this album I actually ordered The Import before even available in the US!

Unfortunately, this album never really bears fruit. The songs are all over the map...they range from just noise, to bad 80's power rock (e.g. High as the Ceiling)...to feeble attempts at soul (e.g. Miss You Now). What happened to the great (and incredibly witty) songwriting of the earlier albums!? It's like they said "let's do something different...for the sake of doing something different..."

I was so disappointed in this album...I've yet to check out LSVO!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2005-02-03

I ordered it from one of Amazon's "So you'd like to hear some great jazz vocals" -type lists, and I'm glad I did! I too, hear Billie and others in her voice, but Etta has her own style and it is a goodie. I find myself wondering how many pop singers of the 70's have been influenced by her, since I am positive I hear Etta in more than one voice from this era! Very good music, talented band and skillful singer, good arrangements. Can't wait to try my next Etta Jones album!

5 out of 5 stars Etta Jones ....a pleasure to listen to!.......2004-03-04

My favorite pick from this CD is Etta's copy of "FINE AND MELLOW". I 've heard this song perform by so many female Jazz singers, but Etta's is the Best. Listening to her, one can hear the influences of such singers such as Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. This CD is a "must have" for those who enjoy listening to Jazz Vocals.

5 out of 5 stars And don't forget the name........2001-02-01

I rarely meet people familiar with Etta Jones. And often those who say they know her work are really thinking of Etta James (a fine singer in her own right, but lacking that signature Billie Holiday timbre and phrasing that belong only to Etta). What distinguishes Etta from Lady Day is the former's perpetually gregarious, good-humored spirit that invites us to have fun with her rather than share her life experiences. That quality was in abundant evidence when I caught her recently at Chicago's Jazz Showcase. Unfortunately, the sound system was unworthy of her, producing an unwanted metallic edge. But I solved the problem by playing this album when I got home. [Postscript: I like this CD so much, I purchased the RVG 2006 remastered edition (pink cover). To my ears, the "hotter" mix, "punched-up" sound, and "enhanced" reverb of the new edition make this earlier edition (yellow cover) the better bet. Regardless, take whatever you can get.]

5 out of 5 stars A jewel for your collection........2000-10-08

Sit back, turn up the volume, unplug the phone and prepare to be impressed. Jones captures the best aspects of Billie Holiday and Nancy Wilson, but she's really more than either because of her unique phrasing and interpretation, plus a great voice. She puts her mark on every song she sings. "On the Street Where You Live" may not sound right at first, but Etta's version soon becomes the only way you want to hear this standard. Not only are you going to need a screwdriver to get this CD out of the player, but you might as well buy two copies now because your friends will be asking. I've bought 4 already, 3 gift copies. A great jazz recording, a great jazz artist, your money is well spent on this one.

5 out of 5 stars 12 years and counting.......2000-04-30

I've been listening to this album for 12 years -- starting when it was an LP in my parents' collection and I was in middle school -- and bought it at least twice for myself (it was stolen once) on CD. There's no saying in words what Etta Jones' voice does with music, but it's a good thing: earthy, smooth, mellifluous, her voice pours out of her like wine, intoxicating and enchanting.

Jones glides through moods and modes, speaks the languages of merry mischief ("It Could Happen to You", "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," ""I Love Paris") and haunted lovesickness ( in the eternally stunning title track, "Don't Go to Strangers," Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow," "Something to Remember You By") with equal fluency --and sometimes in the same song ("Bye, Bye Blackbird").

The whole world should own this album.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds like they just wanted to destroy something beautiful.......2005-04-20

For me, Blonde Redhead at their best conjures images of deranged looking Japanese scientists in pristine white lab coats hovering over my hospital bed, grinning like Cheshire kittens whilst allowing the hypodermic needles in their hands to drip some kind of poison onto the floor.

Let's put the Sonic Youth comparisons to rest by just saying that for one, Kazu Makino whomps Kim Gordon's ass as far as listenability goes, and for some that might be saying something. Kazu's ability to pitch her voice up into that weird hesitate-to-call-it-a-falsetto-but-for-lack-of-a-better-word thing she does is a big part of the magnetism of Blonde Redhead's unique sound.

The best moments on this record come when Blonde Redhead are at their most twistedly melodic. The overdriven miasma of guitar that is "Distilled" will lope through your head for days like a wounded deer; "Suimasen" is surgeon's background music for a back alley abortion; "Futurism vs. Passeism Pt. 2" is a floaty, repetitive sound collage of guitar spackled with spoken word snippets doctored up to sound like they were pulled from the AM radio waves.

The worst moments on this record comprise the entire 6:00 or so of the title track, "In An Expression of the Inexpressible," and the rest of the album is fairly hit-or-miss.

They're not the most consistent of bands -- as others have said, they lend themselves more to mixtapes than anything else. As ridiculous as it seems to suggest, a 'Best Of,' done well, would encapsulate them better than any of their albums proper. As it is, though, they are one of few bands out there worth exploring despite their inconsistency.

Their latest, "Misery is a Butterfly" has very little guitar but is still quite listenable and considerably poppier than this record. If "In An Expression..." didn't fly your kite, try "Butterfly."

5 out of 5 stars groovy.......2004-11-30

I dont think the Sonic Youth comparisons are really accurate, this band has a sound of their own. I would recomend it to anyone that likes My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab or (yeah) Sonic Youth

4 out of 5 stars Blonde Redhead's growing pains.......2004-08-24

Might be described as a transitional album. Worth owning for the song "Distilled" alone. It feels rougher to me than other BR albums -- much less poppy than Damaged Lemons and more awkward in the vein of their first two. Still -- excellent if you enjoy their sounds.

5 out of 5 stars good, but lacks something.......2003-11-11

This album was made in the transition between when the group abandoned bass and before realizing a fuller sound using additional musicians and studio trickery with "Melody of..." and their latest gem "Misery Is A Butterfly". Subsequently, it's quite an intersting record, with alot of good ideas, but it lacks a certain fullness that prevents it from being their best as other people have put it. As I said, the actual songs are mostly pretty good---intriguing dischordant melodies, distant detached thin vocals, left-of-center electronics and percussion, and an overall feeling of 'the inexprssible' and disconnectedness--but I found myself wishing there would be more layers to fully realize the potential of these songs. The production is too sparse for my tastes. Maybe I'm just more of a newer-Blonde Redhead fan. There is something of a no-wavish meets art-punk contrast in the arrangements that makes it cool, but if you're looking for a bigger and bolder version of Blonde, I recommend 'Misery Is A Butterfly' instead.

4 out of 5 stars Glorious!!.......2003-05-12

This is just an incredible album, like all of the rest of their stuff. It took me awhile to start enjoying them. The dissonant guitars made me think they were biting Sonic Youth. But after a few listens I realized that they are very different. While Sonic Youth at their best relied on distortion and improvisation, Blonde Redhead writes non-traditional and dissonant melodies and uses lots of unique time signatures. But there's not a whole lot of improv there. I'd say they had more in common with Don Caballero than Sonic Youth.

If that sounds like your bag, get this record. It's wonderful, exhilarating, and totally unique. My favorite is the great drum line and cracking vocals that is track 4.

And if you have a chance, see them live. They are one of the best performing bands you'll ever see.

Set in dark, slickened streets and populated by a stellar ensemble cast, this adaptation of Frank Miller's hard-edged, film noir inspired graphic novels plays like comic-book-come-to-life—not surprising, as Miller is credited as Robert Rodriguez's co-director (with a bit of help from Quentin Tarantino). The soundtrack to this bleak, compelling exercise in pure noir stylism is provided mostly by director Rodriguez, with an occasional assist from past collaborators John Debney (Spy Kids and its sequel) and Graeme Revell (From Dusk Til Dawn). While their largely synth-driven cues tend naturally towards brooding atmospheric soundscapes, their tense electro-rhythms are seasoned with bracing doses of sinewy, sensual sax and dotted with the occasional bongo flourish, details that musically evoke both a shadowy humanity and the film's genre-savvy roots. Also featuring disparate, yet wholly integrated contributions from techno-house savants Fluke (the hypnotic "Absurd") and 20th century Mexican classicist Silvestre Revueltas, it's the sinister flipside to the future-jazz sheen of Vangelis' classic Blade Runner.--Jerry McCulley

i listened to the servant song and i know everyone said its pretty well known that that is the song they used in the trailer, but if you listen to "broken chairs" by built to spill it really sounds like parts of the trailer music too. and its also a good song. so i would recommend trying that as well!

Now, i loved the movie, but the soundtrack blew me away! all the songs fit the movie perfectly. However, it is missing the instrumental version of "Cells" by the Servants, which plays on the DVD title menu

4 out of 5 stars An addendum to "FangsFirst" comment.......2005-09-16

FangsFirst is absoluty correct -- trailer music is almost never on the movie's soundtrack. An interesting additional bit of trivia, however; almost all trailer themes ARE from a movie soundtrack, just from a DIFFERENT movie than the one the trailer is for!

So if you're looking for "Cells" by The Servant (the song from the Sin City trailer), take a look at the soundtrack to Transporter 2. You'll find it along with another song by The Servant. "Cells" does have lyrics to it (which aren't on the Sin City trailer), but it's still a damned good song.

Just thought I'd share that with everybody.

Fife & Drum Music inspired and entertained Americans throughout the 1800s, whether in a military camp or a village Fourth of July celebration. This unique recording captures the spirited music in the natural outdoor environment of a remote farmstead. Many of these tunes have never before been recorded.

How can anyone pass up a chance to listen to a song titled "Go To The Devil and Shake Yourself" - the title track to this fife and drum CD? These fellows present a historically accurate representation of what soldiers and civilians alike would have heard in 19th Century America both on the battlefield and during concerts around the campfires of Civil War regiments and back home on band stands. This is music that makes people stop and think what entertainment can be when mixed with an appreciation of history. Get this CD, pop it in the player while traveling around the nation thinking about the history of the 19th century when the United States became what it is today.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Song.......2006-11-30

Paul Evans' song "Happy Go Lucky Me" is one of the happiest, funnest songs ever written and recorded. A classic, and definitely worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite on the mark...........2003-07-21

Paul Evans had a brief period of recording visibility with his quasi-novelty tunes in the late 50's and early 60's with "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat" being his most recognizable. Three of his tunes made the top-20 and one more scraped the bottom of the pop charts before he, as a performer, virtually disappeared from the music-buying public's radar with the exception of an isolated appearance on the country and U.K. charts during the 70's. Unknown to many music buyers of the time however, Evans was a force behind the musical scenes as a songwriter with many of his individually and co-written tunes showing up in the charts as done by others such as the Kalin Twins (When), Bobby Vinton (Roses Are Red) and more. In 1996, Ace Records of the U.K. did an excellent compilation of Evans' work but it has been claimed that some of the charted hits that appeared only in mono on the Ace piece did in fact exist in stereo. When this Castle piece came along there was some hope that these stereo versions may have finally made it to the digital domain, however that was not to be the case. Also, somewhat surprisingly, Evans' last, albeit minor-charting, hit does not appear on this compilation which seems a bit strange in that there are 28 tracks here with a slew of previously unreleased demos as well as a recorded interview with Evans. While this is overall a competently produced piece, these disappointments lead to the lesser star ranking and give the edge to the Ace CD. Sound-wise, there are no revelations and no new stereo here as noted above. The later tracks (13-15,28) appear in stereo with all the earlier stuff in somewhat flat mono. The demo recordings are sometimes noisy, not surprisingly as they have been taken from acetates. In all, a decent job but it does fall short of and is not an improvement over the Ace CD.

5 out of 5 stars Addicting.......2005-09-21

Not sure there is anything else that needs to be said. Everything about this CD is fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars not sure where they are going.........2004-07-13

I became a fan of Brainiac after seeing them open for the Jesus Lizard in 1996 or so. They rocked and I was instantly hooked. I thought Believo was great, released after the demise of Brianiac. You could definitely tell how much of an influence John Schmersal was to that great band. The sound on Believo is experimental, saturnine and withdrawn, but hook-laden and very infectious. I also liked High Society, and Toko Yasuda's musicianship was a great addition to that album's overall feel.

On this album, however, it's as though Enon is trying too hard to be super-light sugary pop. Schmersal's songs seem to take on a different feel than was present of the first album- it's not as raw, the experimentation is gone and the mood is changed. Also, Toko's vocals come off a little too cute sometimes. On some of the tracks Toko seems to have a pre-teen affectation that detracts from the overall song. "Shave" sounds like the Sneaker Pimps or some late 90's radio song. However, this is definitely a great album and would get five stars relative to most other band efforts- yet it's only a four-star album next to what these guys can really do.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2004-04-07

This is the latest release from Enon and it's every bit as magical as their last kick-ass album, "High Society". This is band that just knows how to write and record really catchy electro-pop-rock-trash that merits listen upon listen. If you liked High Society you'll love this just as much. It follows the same varied performances, never dull, always catchy, loaded with hooks and uncompromising vocals...especially from Toko who takes a bit more of the mic on this one. I saw these guys recently at the ATP festival here in England and they rocked it hard and (...). Get this, you will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars wont dissapoint.......2003-12-07

    4 out of 5 stars Drummer Man.......2005-02-28

It has been said that Hal Blaine is the most recorded drummer in pop music history. After 50 years in the music business, he has played on over 4,000 records. Over 3,000 of these made it onto the Billboard Hot 100. More than 300 were certified gold and at least 40 of them hit the #1 position. Some of the artists Blaine has worked with include The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel, Jan & Dean, The Carpenters and Herb Alpert. Most of Phil Spector's lush productions for The Ronettes, The Crystals, Darlene Love and others featured the drumming of Hal Blaine, as did many orchestral pieces by arrangers such as Jimmie Haskell and Nelson Riddle.

This CD features Hal's second solo album. It is an instrumental album, since Hal didn't sing. The album mostly features cover versions of recent hits. Although it is not a live album, it features audience reactions dubbed in, to simulate the "a go-go" sound featured on the Johnny Rivers live albums that were popular at the time. Although this is not an important album by any stretch of the imagination, it is still a lot of fun. It is designed to showcase Hal's drumming, and it does that quite well. The CD features four bonus tracks that were not on the original album. Fans of 1960s instrumentals should dig it.

4 out of 5 stars The Wrecking Crew rocks!.......2002-05-15

A better album than the "Deuces, T's, ..." set, but now sadly out of print. Get it if you can find it. Those wishing to hear Blaine at his best, though, can pick up Phil Spector's "Back to Mono" box set or nearly anything recorded on the West Coast in the 1960s.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the Most Recorded Musician Ever.......2002-02-19

"Drums! Drums! A Go Go" is an apt title for this CD. Hal Blaine's playing is excellent as always, but I think the Ventures were better at doing surf instrumentals. The digital remastering by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersh sounds great. The main reason I only gave this 4 stars is for the overdubbed audience noise. I also recommend the book "Hal Blaine and the Wrecking Crew" on MixBooks, although it is a bit skimpy on facts.

5 out of 5 stars Very Mellow, Very Very Good........2006-08-23

I have listened to this cd non-stop and still love it! This cd is very mellow compared to the others and has smooth feeling to it. The lead singer has a raspy yet soulfull voice that is strangly relaxing. The album is very addicting but also mellow, so don't come looking for rock on this one.

4 out of 5 stars The best album Ive picked up in a long time.......2003-09-13

i just picked this album up, and i think its absolutly awesome, i cant stop playing it, i think if someone was to pick this album up they would not be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven but still worth having.......2003-08-15

This album is a bit uneven and while the guys in Stereophonics sometimes make interesting music, they still sound rather boring and "viscous" from time to time. Songs like the melodic "Maybe tomorrow", the rocking "Madame Helga", the heavy "High as the ceiling" and the sentimental "Nothing precious at all" makes it worth to buy the album. But in my opinion this effort includes too many mediocre and even dull songs. Bits and pieces makes me think of Cracker's "Forever" even `tho this album is far more rocking and raw. Singer Kelly Jones sings just as rough as Keith Richards look. Anyway, Sterephonics are doing a decent job preventing rock `n' roll from dying, but buried six feet under a pile of commercialized radio pop it's hard to be heard. Help them out!

4 out of 5 stars They had got to go there to come back !!!!.......2003-08-15

Yes, they had got to go there to come back to their best. They've must have read my O-star rated review for their previous awful album. How deceived I was with"J.E.E.T.P."! But now they are back to their highest state of inspiration and made their best songs yet! Maybe Tomorrow and Madame Helga are their best singles EVER!!!
    I hope they stay there!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Different, and amazing.......2003-06-29

    Full album review:

    Help Me

The album starts off with a bang with Help Me, an all out rock song that tells fans this CD will be nothing like JEEP. The riff in the chorus is great, but my problem with this song is that it lasts 7 minuites and has the same chords over and over throughout the song with an occasional riff during the chorus. The end gets a little more creative, but overall the song sounds basically the same.

    7/10

    Maybe Tomorrow

Yes, the backing singers play a major role in this song, but I belive this song is a testament to Kelly's ability to produce his own CD. I've said before that the backing singers can hmmm all they want as long as Kelly's voice isn't drowned out and thats exactly what happened in this one. The song doesn't display an extreme amout of guitar skills, but the songwriting is terrific. This song will probably be they're biggest hit to date on the radio waves and may bring fame in the States.

    9/10

    Madame Helga

The worst single to date by far in my mind. Riffs are great, but the greatest part of this band is Kelly's voice, and it is completely drowned out in the chorus of this song by the backing singers who play a horrible part in this song. The chorus is hard to listen to loud because its such a horrible mixing of sounds. Although I praised Kelly for his production on the last song, this one was a complete faliure.

    5/10

    Climbing the Wall

A song loaded with brass and strings, Kelly was truly experimenting here and it worked great. Although I belive this song drags a little too much, Kelly's voice performs great as usual, and I can see many more songs like this one coming in the future.

    8/10

    Getaway

One of my favorite songs on this CD by far, this one is also very well produced. So many things are going on its tough not to sit down and close your eyes to listen to this one. The whisper in Kelly's voice is new and absolutely beautiful. I don't think this song will translate well live, though, because of the intense harmonizing.

    9/10

    You Stole My Money Honey

This song drags too much a lot like Climbing the Wall, but Kelly's voice bails it out in a great way. Although the backing music is subpar, Kelly puts forth one of the greatest performances he ever has in this song which has a very catchy chorus, the trademark of the Phonics.

    7/10

    Jealosy

I love the guitar throghout this song especially at the end where this song really picks up. The chorus is genius and again uses the backing singers as they should be used- in the background. From what I hear the lyrics are the weakest part of this song, and the vocals aren't particularly well done with an exeption of the chorus.

    6/10

    I'm Alright

The chorus of this song is unlike anything the Phonics have ever done. I can see Kelly so high he can hardly keep from falling to the studio flooor during this entire song. Stuart shines in this song as well because the drums start the bluesy feel which dominates the entire song. The lyrics are some of the strongest on the CD and are truly like poetry.

    8/10

    Nothing Precious at All

By far my favorite song on the track. Like Getaway, something different is happening throuout this entire song and the piano riff thrown in during the chorus makes me smile every time I hear it. The lyrics in this song are also amazing and Kelly's voice once again shines in this song which is behind only Local Boy in my book.

    10/10

    Rainbows and Pots of Gold

This one is another song that experiments with the use of strings, and once again I love it. The only thing this track lacks is a catchy chorus like we're used to hearing from the `Phonics, but this track definitely stands out as one of the best. Much like Getaway this one also has tons of harmonies going on at the same time making a great track.

    9/10

    I Miss You Now

This song backs up Madame Helga as the worst on the record. Two vocal tracks try to save this one, but fail to revive the lack of movement coming from the backing music in this track.

    6/10

    High as the Ceiling

Once again the backing singers ruin what could have been a great song. The riffs in this one beg you to get out of your chair until the backing singers begin in the chorus, forcing you to cover your ears. Another production mistake by Kelly, this trend has got to end.

    7/10

Since I Told You Its Over

This one's a lot like many of the tracks on JEEP. The acoustic guitar is a little to slow and too simple for my tastes, but I love the chorus as well as the piano in the background. This ones a little too slow and dragging to be a single in my opinion.

    7/10

Overall this album was terrific. The weakest part in my mind was the backing singers drowning outt the sound of Kelly's voice during the best rock tracks on the album. I love the new direction that the phonics have moved to because the songs are so much more complicated and musically better than any of the other albums. I was surprised to see that critics and fans are both ripping this album because it is a diversion from the others. Critics especially should be able to hear that this album is much more in-depth musically than the previous ones. This album is my favorite by far and I hope the `Phonics continue to make great music like this one in the future because this one is simply fantastic.
