5 out of 5 stars The Relatives.......2007-01-20

Any blame for the post-rock movement deliquescing into an overly intellectual jazz puddle should be laid directly at guitarist Jeff Parker's feet. He was, after all, the man most responsible for turning Tortoise into what was essentially a post-cool-jazz band on "TNT," unwittingly inviting about 20 million additional jazz tortoises to follow suit. Thing is, the Tortoise guys were actually great jazzbos, especially Parker, whose tasteful guitar work brought relative warmth and accessibility to a band that once concerned itself with frigid austerity. It was to no one's great surprise, then, that Parker became a full-time jazzman following Tortoise's imminent demise, surrounding himself with Chicago's finest in jazz and avant-garde alike. By some distance "The Relatives" is Parker's most lively and listenable recording under his own name, as though he gave the most melodic moments of his first album, "Like-Coping," a much-needed shot in the arm. He and his band members work together to attain a goal of refinement (no Gene Krupa drum solos here, thank you very much), and they're so in sync with each other it's as though they can read the others' thoughts. Thank God, too, that they nailed the tunes; the most memorable of them is "Mannerisms," a funky 1970s R&B holiday for guitar and Rhodes piano. While so many of my CDs have gone stale at one time or another, "The Relatives" has yet to flag after dozens upon dozens of spins.

4 out of 5 stars Intricately simple.......2005-11-10

The nice thing about Jeff Parker is that although the sound of his jazz guitar is unflinchingly similar to his peers, the context of the music is very interesting. He has a more than competent band behind him (witness the beginning of "Rang") and this helps the melodies to shine all the more brightly.

The first time I listened to "The Relatives," my first Jeff Parker album, I more or less let it fly right by me. Why? I guess because he's not Charlie Hunter. But many listens later I realize that's a stupid observation and that this album just seems to naturally improve with each listen.

Cool. Now I have another current jazz musician to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Restless and satisfying.......2005-02-11

Known for adding restless and unexpected 6-string sounds to Tortoise, Isotope 217, and Chicago Underground Orchestra, Jeff Parker plays jazz like someone raised on dub, hip hop, and experimental music. On The Relatives, Parker's woody tone is refreshingly unprocessed, and his stark, angular lines provide a welcome alternative to the carefully manicured guitar timbres that too often characterize fusion, faux world music, and smooth jazz. The album's tunes have elaborate melodic and harmonic structures - this isn't free jazz - but Parker and his three bandmates are never tied to a click track or a rigid arrangement. Collectively improvised around spirited changes and riffs, the music is loose and fluid, yet tinged with a brooding, slightly manic energy. Like espresso or bittersweet chocolate, Parker's playing is bold and uncompromising, yet ultimately satisfying. Engineered by John McEntire (Tortoise, the Sea and Cake, Stereolab, Trans Am) at the fabled Soma Electronic Music Studios, The Relatives has an open, dynamic sound.

4 out of 5 stars Excelente mesmo! .......2005-02-10

What makes Jeff Parkermusics so appealing to me, a chapa who has listened to "almost" every great jazz guitar recording from Brasil, Europe, and USA ever recorded to LP/CD format,(as Jaco Pastorius say, "no brag, just fact"!).. I am 48 years old, and listening for a LONG time!), is that Jeffparker pursues the wonderfully righteous "path" that makes his career so far as a performing /recording musician most listenable.
The decision , IMO, jeffparker does not emulate the great jazz guitar masters of the past, we have their recordings avaliable to us.
He is influenced by them, you can hear this, but not trapped to repeat the ideas, timbres, frasings from those who have already communicated their musical visions. He forges his own distinct identity .
No need for that manner repetition, so jeffparker makes option to forge his own individual frasing, compositional concepts, and best of all, he needs not play that blistering "64th notes" blizzard of scale-derived "note-i-ness" that so many of the new generation of musics-schooled jazz guitaristics are "guilty" of too often.
A contemplative musician then, but this does not indicate he is boring , or in that ECM mode (no complaints on ECM, just to advise he does NOT sound like Terje Rypdal, HAHA!),

I find he is adventurous in the same mode as the great Grant Green, or the enigmatic Sonny Greenwich. Idea over technique.

His ideas sometime seem to overwhelm his technique, and it is a pleasure to hear him reach for what he "wants to say". (This is not to say he lacks for technique, in fact, he usually frases in more clipped call-response lines rather than the long fluid eighth note "post-Wes" style, with more pause/reflection in his musical gestures. )

This recording, without ruining the surprise and describing the compositions, is very much in the concept framed by Mingus, it is "improvisation within the composition", not just a "blowing session". All members of the quarteto contribute to the sounds.

My advise, grab this one. A joyful noise for both jazz fans and also those entusiastics of the grupo "Tortoise".

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Jeff Parker Song-Book.......2005-01-26

Principally known as lead guitarist for seminal post-rock group Tortoise, Jeff Parker's jazz pedigree is by now common knowledge among fans of the genre. Although he holds membership in a number of key Chicago based Jazz ensembles, "The Relatives" is only Parker's second recording date as leader. Following 2003's "Like-Coping," this new wrinkle in Parker's take on modern electro-acoustic jazz is even better than his debut.

Where "Like-Coping" was an equitable mix of austerely melodic fare crossed with avant noise explorations, "The Relatives" is a more cohesive effort. Boasting a bounty of memorable tunes, it swaps the previous record's more outre' tendencies for a more melodic approach. Other than an entirely unexpected but intensely cool distorted, bowed bass solo at the intro to the final cut "Rang," there is relatively little in the way of dissonance on this session. Catchy song-oriented tunes predominate and the entire band shares writing duties.

The line-up is similar to Parker's previous trio outing, with Chad Taylor on drums, Chris Lopez on bass and newcomer Sam Barsheshet on Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos. It is on these highly distinctive analog keyboards that the quartet gains its signature sound. Although the band has all the key elements in place for a post-1970's Fusion outing, they rarely sound derivatively retro. Only on Parker's "Mannerisms" do they invoke that much hallowed genre. Imagine 1960's era Blue Note guitarist Grant Green's ebullient fretboard stylings woven into a double timed variation on Miles Davis' classic "In A Silent Way." Catchy doesn't begin to do it justice. Danceable perhaps. An old Isotope 217 tune even appears in the form of "The Relative," utterly distinctive with it's sinuous bassline, tricky counterpoint and tempo shifts. Although a modicum of abstraction is present on the album, the group never allows these moments to eradicate the innate tunefulness of the compositions themselves.

There is a well chosen cover of Marvin Gaye's "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You" that reveals some of Parker's earliest influences. The quartets' attention to detail on this track is indicative of the session as a whole and affirms their ability to write and perform jazz compositions that are every bit as memorable as pop songs. This is most definitely Parker's finest effort yet.

2 out of 5 stars OH MY THIS CAN'T BE.......2000-03-05

WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS LAST SUMMER I WAS THINKING THIS COULD BE SOMETHING GOOD! WRONG. BAD ELO LIVE ALBUM CUTS THAT DON'T SOUND VERY GOOD. ONLY ONE VIOLINSKI SONG THE INSTRUMENTAL "CLOG DANCE" THEY HAD BETTER SONGS THAN THAT! THE ONLY SONGS THAT STOOD OUT WERE THE RICK PRICE NUMBERS "TOP TEN RECORD" IS GREAT. BEING A BIG ELO FAN THIS WAS A REAL BUMMER.

          5 out of 5 stars Semi-Good.......2000-01-24

First of all, the real name of this album is Friends and Relatives. There are a bunch of rare songs on here from side projects of the members of ELO. The rare tracks are good and worth it for the price. The live songs on here are terribly mixed though. The only reason I gave it five stars is because it is ELO.

          2 out of 5 stars A mostly disposable compilation.......2000-01-19

The first thing you'll do when you get this 2-CD set is say, "Well, at least I didn't pay too much for it." What you do next with it is totally up to you.

This album is rather deceptively packaged as an ELO album. What it is, is really a various artist compilation following Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and various bandmates through about twenty years of recording. Overall, eleven different acts are featured across 29 tracks on 2 CDs. Now, there isn't anything wrong with that in itself, but the final product proves to be less than overwhelming.

To begin with, the seven "live" ELO tracks come from at least one of the live shows recently cleared for legal release on CD and are completely disposable. It doesn't bother me so much that they have the sound quality of a middling bootleg as much as the fact that the performances are totally limp and devoid of any life whatsoever, especially the performance of "Livin' Thing," which is so terrible that it earns the dubious distinction of being the worst track on the album. These could have been away with completely and nobody would have noticed.

The rest of the tracks are a mixed bag. You get three tracks by Wizzard, Roy Wood's post-ELO group, as well as two solo singles by Wood; this group of songs are pretty much the highlight of the album, and most of them are probably available elsewhere. There's also a couple of decent single tracks by Rick Price, bassist for the Move and Wizzard, two really odd recordings featuring Carl Wayne (lead singer of the Move) and some choral group called "Choral Union," two instrumentals by Move/ELO drummer Bev Bevan which are okay if nothing earth-shattering, two very dull tracks by Denny Laine (ex-Wings) whose claim to being here is that he worked with Move member Trevor Burton, and three tracks apiece by the Move (which are of course fantastic even though they aren't mastered so well) and Tandy/Morgan (a band formed by ELO/Move sideman Richard Tandy; "Morgan" is David Morgan, who wrote two songs for Carl Wayne to sing whilst Wayne was in the Move); the Tandy Morgan tracks are fairly dull, very slick and commercial-sounding and reminiscent of ELO's "Discovery," only even more derivative. To round out the set we have a couple of oddball tracks, one by Violinski (presumably a group of ELO sidemen) on a somewhat entertaining instrumental, "Clog Dance," and a collaboration between Rick Wakeman and Roy Wood, "Custer's Last Stand," from the late '80s which is easily the standout track on this album not by the Move or Roy Wood/Wizzard. Instead of sounding like an aimless Yes track, it's a stomping rocker which really does successfully combine each artist's talents. (Really, after looking at the lineup, this album should have been called "The Move Family And Friends.")

The packaging is below standard; you might to expect to see this kind of packaging on bargain bin fillers. No annotation or licensing information, apart from songwriting credits, and no production credits, make trying to figure out the sources for this material a guessing game. The mastering is also a bit dodgy; while some tracks sound fantastic, particularly the later ones, many, especially the Wizzard tracks, were obviously not taken from the best tape sources available.

I still consider this album a worthwhile purchase for hardcore Roy Wood fans, who will be happy to have "Custer's Last Stand" if nothing else, and hardcore ELO fans might welcome the smattering of rarities by various ELO members, but casual fans ought to avoid this one. You'll be much happier picking up a copy of "Strange Magic: The Very Best Of ELO" and being done with it.

4 out of 5 stars Friends And Family (BOX SET).......2000-01-05

I found the Album to be good. I especially enjoyed track 4 of the first CD. (Are You Ready To Rock). The live tracks were Ok. I didn't think they were needed. The songs by former group memebers, friends and family sharp and showed a diverse style that the group members had while they performed the in the 70's and 80's. Tracks 6,10 and 11 of the first CD are good too.

          1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......1999-12-03

I wish I had read a review of this cd before I made the purchase. For some reason, I thought this was a live reunion of Move/Roy Wood/ ELO and friends-Wrong. There are a couple of live ELO cuts which are terrible, the recording sounds like a bad bootleg. The Roy Wood/Wizard stuff is the originals mastered really badly and the Carl Wayne and Denny Laine material is disposable. Bev Bevans drum singles are allright but I'd rather hear Sandy Nelson. Friends and Relatives serves up a collection of mostly previously released solo material from Yes's various members. Jon Anderson's 1998 retread of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is rather pointless, although it's hard to deny Rick Wakeman's epic "Journey." At 22 minutes, it proves that Yes are still capable of turning in portentous, convoluted, synthesizer-driven rock in a beat-driven age. Unfortunately, most of the better tracks here have already been issued on Keys to Ascension, making Friends and Relatives a superfluous compilation. --Everett True

1 out of 5 stars OY OY OY.......2002-11-04

The only pieces worth anything, but not very much, are a couple of the wakeman ditties. The rest is purest drivel. I'm so glad I din't pay a lot for this album. Up North is one my favorite Earthworks songs, but it doesn't fit into this collection -- too jazzy and too good.

I guess it only goes to confirm that each of the heroes in Yes can do very un-heroic things. Don't bother with this one. If you want non-Yes performances by Yes dudes try: Howe: Grand Scheme of Things (only!); Bruford: Earthworks or Feels Good to Me or many others (including Crimson and BLUE); Wakeman: Six Wives (only!); and many folks respect Squire's Fish Out of Water and Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, but I'm not among them.

1 out of 5 stars MY SON'S HAMSTER LOVES IT.......2001-02-09

My son's hamster mysteriously went berserk when I put this CD on. I was less thrilled. Anything worth listening to you probbably have on the original albums. If your looking for some little known gems from Yes, don't look here. Mind drive on Keys to Accension II is one that blew me away.

3 out of 5 stars Presto, vivace and reprise.......2000-09-12

"F & R" is a rather tangled, somewhat unrepresentative compilation which contains a bit of everything from anyone having anything to do with Yes. For example, drummer Bill Bruford is credited for one track, but he left the band more than 25 years ago, didn't he? His contribution, "Up north", lacks the typically fiery percussion and fails to have something compelling. Jon Anderson's 1998 remake of "Owner.." with its stomping techno beats ruins this great song, but his other contributions, "Say" and the title cut from his latest solo album "The more you know", are quite good. And so it goes on, with a lot of mediocre material balanced by some interesting tunes. Rick Wakeman is heavily featured here, with material taken from his '90s solo records like "Live at Hammersmith" and "Time machine". My Wakeman favorite on "F & E" is "Sync or swim". Steve Howe comes up with some tasteful prog-guitar tracks, nothing breathtaking, but "Walk don't run" with its flamenco flavor is remarkable. Neither "Best of.." compilation nor rarities collection, I still have to question the motive behind this actually expensive release, though it can be fun for the newly interested. Nice cover art-work, it shows a surreal rocky landscape similar to "Drama" and "Union".

3 out of 5 stars A collection of Yes member's recent solo works........1999-03-06

Yes: Friends and Relatives is a collection of recent solo projects from the most notable members of Yes. Most of the material is available on other solo albums. Unfortunately for Yes fans, the best songs on this compilation are the live tracks from "Keys to Ascention" I and II, which most of you diehards probably already have. Steve Howe's cover of "Walf Don't Run" is a kick. Only Jon Anderson's solo efforts sound as though they were recorded in the '90s. As such, his latest effort "The More You Know" may be worth checking out. To the avid Yes fan (such as myself) this effort neither disappoints nor excites. All in all, Friends and Relatives proves that Yes was, indeed, much greater than the sum of its parts.

the wizard's convention is a correct name for this album, it features ex deep purple members such as Ian Gillan, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Tommy bolin, Ritchie Blackmore, and the related musicians like DIO, Bernie Marshden who had worked with some DP members in the past. Very good combination! this is a "Must have" for DP fans around the globe.

          3 out of 5 stars A bit of everything........2000-01-13

This CD includes a bit of everything from just about everyone having anything to do with Deep Purple. A pretty nice collection, with several live versions. One of the best is Black Night, absolutely amazing, possibly the best version of this song, better than Made in Japan.(IMO)
