Very Pretty.......2006-10-12
Nice collection of very pretty songs of praise to the Almighty YHWH GOD and our Lord, Jesus Christ. Simple songs, beautifully displayed and sung.
It grows on you.......2005-04-25
I'd like to echo what Mr. Cole wrote 6 years ago: the apparent youth of the singers is a benefit. This CD grows on you. It has staying power, variety, honesty, vigor... and sopranos that excel. Listen to what offsetting effect they have against the young basses on track 2, Chesterfield. Or the seductive tracks 5 and 13.
The choir members are now pushing 50 years old. I would like to thank them for the pleasure and joyous renewal that they give so many years after these performances.
American and English Psalmody.......2003-01-24
The music of American psalmodists such as Billings and Belcher, while it does represent some of the great achievements of the psalmody tradition, is not the whole of this tradition. The fuging tune and related music (anthems etc.) stem originally from English psalmody (the "West Gallery tradition"), the works of men such as William Tans'ur and Aaron Williams. They, their music and the people who sang it in England, as in the US, were very much not of the elite: they were of "the folk", hence their folk music. Pieces by Tans'ur can be found, for those who are interested, in US psalmodies still in print, such as "Harmonia Sacra"
A good introduction to some little-known music.......1999-03-09
I first heard this recording on an old scratchy LP in a college course on American music. Like most people, I was ignorant of the existence of 'fuging tunes', which are an odd and uniquely American blend of baroque counterpoint and homespun harmonies. This extended polyphony is often tacked onto the end of the homophonic chorales or hymns which constitute the standard fare of modern American Protestant church services (and are often boring and bland by comparison, in my opinion). What was in Europe a past-time for the elite became music for the masses in the New World: These tunes were sung not by choirs but by congregations, and proliferated in folk tunebooks such as the 'Southern Harmony', which still survives today.
The performance by the Oregon State group is youthful and exuberant... Overall intonation and clarity are excellent, while vocal technique is somewhat unrefined (this is actually appropriate, given the origins of this music). If you've never experienced early American vocal music, you will be surprised and pleased with this recording.

Decades before the "chant" phenomenon shook the classical charts, the London Choir of the Carmelite Priory released this solemn disc of prayers and hymns. The 1961 sonics add a slight recording hiss to the CD, but the performances are still memorable and every bit as impressive as the more famous Benedictine monk recording. As part of the Penguin Classics series of music, liner notes by author Kathleen Norris (Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith) explain her love for this music. Chant aficionados won't be disappointed. --Jason Verlinde

Duplicate of 'Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is identical to another His Majestie's Clerkes CD, "Early American Choral Music, Vol. 2 (Anglo-American Psalmody: 1550-1800)" but with a different cover and name! I bought both and was irritated to discover this. The other version is cheaper, so I would suggest getting that one.
Great recording reissued.......2003-03-22
This is great choral singing, and if you missed it in this incarnation, all is not lost. It has been reissued by Harmonia Mundi's budget label, Classical Express as "Early American Choral Music vol 2 Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800". Texts of the songs aren't in the booklet but can be downloaded from the label's website.

Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Album!.......2002-06-16
It's rare that I come across an independent project and truly enjoy it from track to track. I'm definitely not a fan of "underground" music, not because I don't appreciate the hard work that these musicians have, but I have yet to find a project that truly inspires me. That's why The David/Asaph Project's Psalmody sat on my desk for over three months. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the major label releases as it is. But I finally sat down and put the CD in, thinking I would least use it as background music while working. I wound up sitting back, and literally soaking in this album. Vocalist David Albracht's incredibly unique and peaceful voice is a perfect companion to the deeply introspective instrumentations from a back-up band that features everything from acoustic and electric guitars to mandolins and cellos. The music ranges from folk to rock to classical, but the overall mood and theme of the album is never lost. The most beautiful part of this album lies in the lyrics, which are pulled word for word from the Bible. What could be more inspirational then some of the most beautiful Psalms, sung with passion and beautifully orchestrated? The album's mission, according to their website, is to inform us of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs from many walks of life, different languages, and diverse cultures which celebrate and honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Although I can't speak for everyone, it sure brought some much needed peace and tranquillity to my daily "fast-food pace" lifestyle. I give this album a long due A. --Kevin McNeese, TSRocks.com
This is a wonderfully enlightening album!.......2001-06-07
I did not know that an album like this existed until a friend of mine called and let me know about it. Psalmody is an amazing experience that lifts the spirit and moves the soul. This unique sound is also very memorable and now I can't stop humming these songs all day. I just can't say enough great things about this wonderful album other than try it and let me know what you think. It's a refreshing alternative to some of the less-inspired alternatives in this field of music.
Psalmody: Sing a New Song.......2001-05-08
Psalmody offers a new, modern treatment of the timeless Psalms. David Albracht's CD is worth a listen not only because of his new and updated approach to the Psalms, but also because of the strong instrumental music behind the melodies. This is a great CD that can help all of us pray the Psalms with memorable, singable music. Psalms 111, 66 and 133 are my favorite tracks for the simplicity of the songs and the beautiful accompaniments.
