Intimate, Inventive, and Often Funky.......2003-08-01

I keep returning to this disc over and over a decade-plus later. The great composer/arranger/altoist left this world too soon, but this concert reminds us that his work was and is vital.

Hemphill was one of the original World Saxophone Quartet and devised settings for big band and densely textured sextets toward the end of his life. Here his compositions are conveyed in an intimate setting where he gets to state the theme with his own horn and then show off his improvisational skill and a keening timbre as voicelike as his fellow Texan and alto player Ornette Coleman. Most impressive are the moments where cellist Abdul Wadud and he harmonize. Wadud, bowing in the upper registers in some spots, sounds very much like a sax and shadows Hemphill like Don Cherry on those classic Coleman tracks.

But really, Hemphill was his own unique voice, compositionally and instrumentally. Because it has moments of great tenderness and sorrow counterpoised by an easy swinging smoky funk, you may want to play this late at night. Hear it at any rate.

More and less Taylor.......2007-05-25

It's hard not to review Marilyn Crispell without mentioning her clear and acknowledged influence, if not outright musical idol, Cecil Taylor. Until recently, her playing instantly invoked Taylor, as is the case on this live solo outing from Mills College in 1995. The opening track, "Fragments" is a 16 minute tune replete with Taylorisms -- rapid-fire attacks, dense chords, and dissonant clusters. No doubt, she has a softer, less percussive touch, and nowhere near the same kind of kinetic energy, but is Marilyn "just" a female version of Cecil Taylor, or worse, a Taylor wannabe?

Listening in more detail, you can see that the Taylor comparisons are an oversimplification, and that her style includes not just Taylor, but shades of Bill Evans, Paul Bley, and Annette Peacock. Listen to Track 2 -- "Nowhere" starts as a gentle, though not quite straight-ahead, exploration that gives way to "Reflections" about half-way through -- there are places where the Monk tune is more lyrical and spare than the original, and others where it's more complex and dissonant. By Track 3, she's back to Taylor territory, with chordal fisticuffs and hammered notes on "As Our Tongues Lap Up the Morning Air." About half-way through, she recedes into "Song for Abdullah" where she tones things down to an almost Debussy-like wafting before the melancholy conclusion that is "Apart." Track 4 is another medley, continuing pretty much where "Apart" left off on "Night Moves," a piece that builds upon itself, becoming increasingly complex and stormy. After 8 minutes, this transitions into a two-minute bridge of the now obscure standard, "The Night has 1000 Eyes," before "Omberg" rounds out the concert. A final piece, "Drums," is offered as an encore, and has Crispell literally hammering/rattling the piano's innards, both wood and string, with sticks.

Crispell's playing has shifted dramatically in more recent years, moving increasingly towards lyricism and silence, but continuing to defy convention by refusing to be bound by rhythm and melody. On this 60-minute solo concert, she begins to unfold that direction, but treads regularly upon Taylor territory as well. It's a nice showcase for this contrast in styles, and her own unique style, that is raucous and meditative, melodic and atonal, and dense and diaphanous when her muse calls for it.

Live Jazz Piano.......2003-07-04

Dick Hyman is a magnificent jazz pianist, who has fortunately recorded a great deal over the last 15 years. Many of his albums have ben programmatic - featuring particular songwriters or years. This CD is more wide-ranging - a wonderful set of live solos from a 1989 club date, including a typical Hyman programme; a range of standards, a couple of originals, and the occasional unlikely choice (see the ODJB's "At the Jazz Band Ball"). Hyman's eclectic style is well displayed here - a virtuoistic yet melodious swinging approach reminiscent of late period Tatum, supplemented by an awareness of bop and post-pop pianism, and also with a mastery of full blooded stride piano (see "Just You Just Me"). Overplayed standards such as "Blue Skies" are given a thorough workout, and Jelly Roll Morton's lively "Frog-I-More Rag" is effectively re-interpreted as a lyrical ballad

As ever with the Café des Copains, the piano sound is not ideal, but background noise is kept to a minimum. Strongly recommended.

Young Richter:full of technique!!.......2001-06-02

This cd shows us Richter in his young years in an all-live recital(the coughs and the few wrong notes do not lie to us).

I would say that the two well known 'feux follets and harmonies du soir' were more thrilling on the Sofia recording which is never equaled.Noneless these other etudes are worth having in one's collection for they do not appear elsewhere.

The concerto is already known as well as the 'funérailles'

This CD is rare and that's what adds to its value.
