Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Duet albums are inherently tricky affairs. Without the added textures and colors of a full band, the minimalist dynamics of two instruments alone together can too often turn repetitious and stale, as the difficulty of generating sparks between two musicians turns into a disappointing experience for the listener. But there are exceptions, and happily, pianist Kenny Barron and violinist Regina Carter's Freefall is one of them. This is a wildly diverse set that shows off these two musicians' enormous talents to great effect. Freefall succeeds where other duet albums sometimes fail, thanks to its variety. Opening with the Afro-Cuban montuno-flavored version of "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," the album moves through a delicate rendition of Sting's "Fragile," and a bluesy take on Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso," all of which showcase the two musicians' tremendous range. Barron and Carter complement each other perfectly throughout; their interplay even includes some interesting role-reversal moments where Carter backs Barron with rhythmic accompaniment on her violin. And Barron shows why he's still one of the most underappreciated pianists around. For all the pair's technical facility playing various jazz styles though, the high points of the album are undoubtedly on the tracks where they venture the furthest afield, as in the quirky Barron original "What If," and the improvised title track, both of which get into some interesting spaces that recall early 20th-century classical composers such as Bartók and Stravinsky. --Ezra Gale

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Barron & Regina Carter.......2006-02-21

Great duo recording by two of the greatest jazz musicians in the world!

4 out of 5 stars Rather get the superb "People Time" (with Stan Getz).......2005-07-08

This was on the list of Down Beat's Album of the Year, which surprised me somewhat but is probably a reflection of the fact that 2001 was not a year of splendid jazz records. As a fan of Kenny Barron buying this record (at a reduced price) did not require a second thought, but it is - of course - a far cry from Getz'/Barron's "People Time". Plus Carter's background accompaniment during some of Barron's solos is completely superfluous and cheapens the music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2004-11-06

Who would have thought - jazz violin?! This CD is just simply amazing. The combination of the piano and violin is breathtaking. Regina Carter and Kenny Baron are incredibly talented. This CD is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Complex and subtle, like fine wine.......2004-09-24

The music is alternately dreamy and startling. Always interesting and it gets better with repeated playings. Freefall is properly named! I think most of it must be improvisational, it is so spontaneously interactive. The talk between Regina and Kenny is intimate whispers. A real masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Regina: Surely the modern Queen of Jazz Violin!.......2004-02-18

Regina is one of my favorite modern artists- in this album with Kenny, you hear how well they play off of one another. A lot of her rhythms are hypnotic and make you want to dance, or else try to steal her talent! My favorites on this album would have to be Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise, Phantoms, and Flower. Of course, all the songs are good, except that Misterioso got on my nerves. Otherwise, it's a jewel of a CD.

5 out of 5 stars This is Trance.......2006-11-09

Nu NRG have created an album that matches my expectations of a stellar trance CD perfectly. I enjoy mellow beginings, build ups, highs and lows, and lots of energy in my CD's. This cd builds up from a beautiful begining, and slowly, melodically turns into a piece I wish I could turn up indefiantely. I highly recomend Free Fall for those with similar taste in trance music to mine.

5 out of 5 stars Simply remarkable.......2005-08-02

NuNRG, one of Vandit records artists, explodes with great tunes in this album. Of course, Paul Van Dyk has a heavy hand on this success. Great transitions, great range, beautiful sound heard at normal volume or banging loud. If you like greatly crafted music, get this. And you'll be playing tracks 5 and 6 over and over.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS TRANCE!.......2005-04-02

Nu Nrg's musical talent is a true gift to the "trance nation" I heard clips off their tracks and was amazed and knew that I needed to get a copy of this compilation and I'm thankful I did. As far as I know this is their 1st artist album and artist albums usually can't be listened from beginning to end except for this one! I will go on to say this is one of the best TRANCE albums I have ever heard. Pure, solid, upbeat, euphoric trance that gives you the good vibes and exceptional beats & melodies making ur musical senses reach new heights and makes u dance when the build up goes off. This album has something for everyone. If they sound this good on cd imagine how they sound live! No wonder Van dyk signed them to Vandit!! Trance addicts this one's for you No disappointment here A must add to your collection 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2005-01-16

That is the word that best describes this duo from italy. Nu nrg is unbelievable. If you like melodic trance, this cd should be on your list. Fave songs include Eclisse, Butterfly, Bonsai but you really cannot limit yourself. These guys are awesome...reccomended!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2004-12-09

Great quality album. Visual Sonar is awesome, I hope they'll release it as a single soon enough.
Some great tracks that have gotten the PvD/Vandit treatment and just rock.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This enhanced CD is worth buying just for the splendid video.......2002-02-12

Luke Slater's "Body Freefall Electronic Inform" single is a set of remixes of the title track, which originally appeared on his 1999 album WIRELESS. There are four remixes of the song, and placing the CD into a computer allows one to watch the "X-Rated" version of the music video of another track off WIRELESS, "All Exhale."

The original "Body Freefall Electronic Inform" mix was pretty uninteresting, and none of the remixes do much to change that, although the Counterplan Mix works well when it's part of a DJ set. So, the music on the CD isn't worth getting excited about, but this single is essential for fans of Luke Slater. Why? Because the music video is one of the most entertaining videos I've even seen.

"All Exhale video (X-Rated version)" was in a London taxi cab with Slater and an ever-changing set of fellow passengers. The video opens with about a minute of monologue from the cab driver. He claims in the beginning that he's on his first day, but goes on to say to another passenger, "I know loads of boys, I've been in this game for...thirty years." Besides the abundance of hilarious contradictions, he displays a great deal of pithy wisdom, such as "The...tube strikes, what, why don't we all go on strike?" Then, the music kicks in and the cab becomes a metaphor for life. In spite of its "X-Rated" appelation, the video contains no sexual content, although the Cockney cab driver certainly uses a great deal of profanity. It's difficult to explain justly why this video puts the listener into uncontrollable laughter, but if you like Luke Slater, this CD is worth getting just for this video.

3 out of 5 stars Power Electro you can Dance to!.......2000-08-14

With this five track (36min) single Luke Slater has proved that he is one of the best among the funky electro / house masters. I really dig Slater after Wireless CD! The present CD contains five different mixes -- ranging from full-strength electro to power-house in style. It's really funky and uptempo, - but unless you're a _true_ house-addict this may not be for you. The 'X-rated' VIDEO is .. not so interesting.

Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Meadowlark find new mountains to climb and get to the top!.......2001-05-20

When I thought that nothing could top their 'Legends of the Land' CD, along comes 'FreeFall'. This CD brings out the more upbeat side of Meadowlark, however is no less intense or melodic as their past work (no sell out, in other words). The guitar and flute work from Cyge and Trombetta are in top form, and will grip you from the first minutes of listening to this great CD.

I had the pleasure of listening to their music live and meeting them in person (my copy of FreeFall is signed!), and must admit that this is a group of wonderful people that deserve to be up there with other 'top' acts in this genre...

The comparisons to Nightnoise and Tingstad/Rumbel are very accurate, however if you are one who is turned off by this comparison, well...it only because of the presence of 'mellow guitar and flute'. As much as I like the new age 'gods' that I mentioned earlier, Meadowlark breathe some action into this genre without being overly derivative or 'smooth jazz'. What can I say - I think the world of them, and really think that you might too...

Since the departure of one of my fave bands - Nightnoise - Meadowlark have come along and saved the day in my mind. They don't want to be a 'replacement', nor would I expect that - however they have learned the best from the 'masters' and put it into practice in their music, and managed to create this and many other CD's of wonderful upbeat (and somewhat intense at times without putting you to sleep) CD's - FreeFall is one of them! Enjoy it if you dare!!!
