Freefall is a long-awaited musical debut. It reveals Noemi as a sophisticated and daring songwriter/performer whose compositions are sumptuous and intelligent, visceral and cerebral. Her lyrics are an honest, direct poetry encased in a lush musical soundscape: visual, sensual and highly evocative. Inspired by the expansive worlds of Middle Eastern, jazz and Trance music, Noemi has created a new musical space. Independent. 2005.

Duet albums are inherently tricky affairs. Without the added textures and colors of a full band, the minimalist dynamics of two instruments alone together can too often turn repetitious and stale, as the difficulty of generating sparks between two musicians turns into a disappointing experience for the listener. But there are exceptions, and happily, pianist Kenny Barron and violinist Regina Carter's Freefall is one of them. This is a wildly diverse set that shows off these two musicians' enormous talents to great effect. Freefall succeeds where other duet albums sometimes fail, thanks to its variety. Opening with the Afro-Cuban montuno-flavored version of "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise," the album moves through a delicate rendition of Sting's "Fragile," and a bluesy take on Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso," all of which showcase the two musicians' tremendous range. Barron and Carter complement each other perfectly throughout; their interplay even includes some interesting role-reversal moments where Carter backs Barron with rhythmic accompaniment on her violin. And Barron shows why he's still one of the most underappreciated pianists around. For all the pair's technical facility playing various jazz styles though, the high points of the album are undoubtedly on the tracks where they venture the furthest afield, as in the quirky Barron original "What If," and the improvised title track, both of which get into some interesting spaces that recall early 20th-century classical composers such as Bartók and Stravinsky. --Ezra GaleCustomer Reviews:

This enhanced CD is worth buying just for the splendid video.......2002-02-12
The original "Body Freefall Electronic Inform" mix was pretty uninteresting, and none of the remixes do much to change that, although the Counterplan Mix works well when it's part of a DJ set. So, the music on the CD isn't worth getting excited about, but this single is essential for fans of Luke Slater. Why? Because the music video is one of the most entertaining videos I've even seen.
"All Exhale video (X-Rated version)" was in a London taxi cab with Slater and an ever-changing set of fellow passengers. The video opens with about a minute of monologue from the cab driver. He claims in the beginning that he's on his first day, but goes on to say to another passenger, "I know loads of boys, I've been in this game for...thirty years." Besides the abundance of hilarious contradictions, he displays a great deal of pithy wisdom, such as "The...tube strikes, what, why don't we all go on strike?" Then, the music kicks in and the cab becomes a metaphor for life. In spite of its "X-Rated" appelation, the video contains no sexual content, although the Cockney cab driver certainly uses a great deal of profanity. It's difficult to explain justly why this video puts the listener into uncontrollable laughter, but if you like Luke Slater, this CD is worth getting just for this video.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Meadowlark find new mountains to climb and get to the top!.......2001-05-20
I had the pleasure of listening to their music live and meeting them in person (my copy of FreeFall is signed!), and must admit that this is a group of wonderful people that deserve to be up there with other 'top' acts in this genre...
The comparisons to Nightnoise and Tingstad/Rumbel are very accurate, however if you are one who is turned off by this comparison, well...it only because of the presence of 'mellow guitar and flute'. As much as I like the new age 'gods' that I mentioned earlier, Meadowlark breathe some action into this genre without being overly derivative or 'smooth jazz'. What can I say - I think the world of them, and really think that you might too...
Since the departure of one of my fave bands - Nightnoise - Meadowlark have come along and saved the day in my mind. They don't want to be a 'replacement', nor would I expect that - however they have learned the best from the 'masters' and put it into practice in their music, and managed to create this and many other CD's of wonderful upbeat (and somewhat intense at times without putting you to sleep) CD's - FreeFall is one of them! Enjoy it if you dare!!!
