5 out of 5 stars There's a sudden itch/an electric twitch/sometimes I swear this body's got a mind of its own.......2007-05-14

Chris Rea spent a quarter century playing sleek, grown-up rock that has two easy-to-spot signatures --- guitars that are fluid as mercury and a voice that sounds as if it's been up all night and doesn't plan to rest any time soon --- even if his style is impossible to pigeonhole.

Who is Chris Rea? A master guitarist who didn't pick up a guitar until he was 19. A Brit who learned the blues from records. And a singer-songwriter who, a wag noted, "seemed only to get in the charts when Dire Straits were somewhere else."

Yes, there are echoes of Mark Knopfler in the seamless guitars. A bit of the languor of Knopfler too. But there's something about Rea's music that's idiosyncratic and addictive --- in almost every song, I hear the summer. Blazing sun, burning beach, the tang of lotion mixed with ocean ozone. And time nowhere to be found, time banished. In Rea's pre-global warming world, I feel forever young, fit, in love or about to be.

This is dreamy stuff. With lyrics you'd actually listen to if the music weren't so damn compelling. Organ hotwired to your spine, wicked harmonica, guitar riffs that J.J. Cale would happily steal --- this is the music a lot of us make in our heads and never find in reality. Well, here it is.

For Rea's fans, the one irresistible CD is 1991's "Auberge," which was huge in Europe. Not hard understanding why --- the start of the title song is like nothing you've ever heard before. To wit: A door closes. Boots on stone. Car door slams. Ignition. A guitar trill, building. An organ asks a haunting question. A slide guitar responds. Now the drums kick in. A guitar figure, repeated. Horns. And, at last, that rough voice:

On the hard fast train
On the road to gain
Something gets right through to your telling bone
There's a sudden itch
An electric twitch
Sometimes I swear this body's got a mind of its own

If you listen to this much and are not dancing in your seat --- oh, but that's impossible. At any volume, when the horns, guitars and drums are working together, resistance is futile.

I've been listening to Chris Rea, on and off, since "Auberge." Each time, he's a glorious anti-depressant: a grittier Chris Isaak, a raunchier Bryan Ferry. He's good for parties. As subliminal dinner music. To seal an assignation.

Or when all you need to time-travel is a whiff of Coppertone

4 out of 5 stars Romance & Rea.......2006-08-06

I purchased Auberge when it came out in '91. I had heard "And You My Love" on a show and bought the album for that one song. Turned out to be a bonus. With the exception of cuts 1,2 and 6 this album is outstanding. The vocals are pure sex appeal with songs like "Looking For the Summer" the perfect western movie backdrop, the elusive cowboy always holding back. It encompasses romance and promise. It is timeless. I loved it so much, I bought it again on CD.

4 out of 5 stars A good taste of Rea.......2004-02-20

I highly anticipated this Chris Rea album after the radio success and personal enjoyment of Dancing with Strangers and The Road to Hell. Auberge took on a different style than its immediate predecessors, more low-key and probably less musically diverse, but it is still an enjoyable album.
The title track is the strongest song and obvious single, even though its guitar riff is overused by Rea (listen to the closing riff on Just Wanna be With You from 'Road as well as Johnny Needs a Fast Car from Espresso Logic). Gone Fishing is typical laid-back Rea, but hardly deserved to be included on his "Best of" album.
Other memorable songs are towards the end of the disc: Every Second Counts and Looking for the Summer (also on his "Best of" album). Overall, this album is worth investing in if you like Chris Rea's brand of blues.

5 out of 5 stars AUBERGE - One of, if not the, best of his work.......2003-12-03

A well put-together collection of tunes. What he may lack in technical skills, he has more than made up with the composition, great vocals, and just an all-around, nice selection of songs. There's something here for every taste, and you would look hard to find anything you don't like. One of those CDs you can easily listen to from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars Melancholy, Nostalgia and Lost Love.......2002-03-30

Whether or not you are a romantic person, this album will return you to the places and memories your heart just won't allow you to forget.

Rea's voice is mesmerizing and his guitar playing is, surprisingly, very good. He has crafted some beautiful love songs on this mellow record and it is one of the few CD's I always take with me on road trips and vacations.

"Heaven" is a bittersweet masterpiece that describes the simple joy and escapism of driving: "... the paradise of going somewhere that's still so far away ..." The guitar work alone on this song is worth the price of admission.

"At The Mention Of Your Name" will put a lump in your throat for that special relationship that slipped away - and from which you never completely recovered. Rea does a superb job of capturing those awkward moments of reflection - from having those memories inadvertently triggered by a well-meaning friend, to the "sunny days and drunken nights" of trying to erase them.

I have been surprised over the years at how many people have this lone Rea album in their collections. It's a wild card for sure. Not many folks know about Chris Rea, and he certainly never had much success in the States, but he's good. Real good.

If you are not familiar with Chris Rea, add Auberge to your collection. It really is a must have.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars .......2006-04-13

Hi, does anyone know the name of the song that plays while Xavier is having his brain scanned?

4 out of 5 stars Takes Me Back.......2005-10-12

The film takes me back to when I studied in Spain as an undergraduate student. The CD complemements the film beautifully. Overall there is a good balance in the songs chosen for the soundtrack. I enjoy RadioHead and DaftPunk. Mala Rodriguez surprised me. I like how she flows and will be looking for more of her music.

4 out of 5 stars response to someone's question.......2005-07-29

someone asked about the techno song that was played after they all walked out of the club, it's called aerodynamic and it's by daft punk.... anyway this was a great movie and the soundtrack was incredible, i especially liked the spanish stuff like Cambia La Vida

3 out of 5 stars Techno Song.......2005-07-22

Most of the songs on this CD are spanish, alot of salsa. And there is the occational classical. However, I wanted to find the techno song that is in the movie right after they leave the discoteque when everyone is drunk. That electronic song is great but I cant find it anywhere. Does anyone know what its called? (...)
Let me know please.

5 out of 5 stars great mix from the movie.......2004-06-16

If you want to introduce yourself to great music, seen the movie or not, this is the cd for you.
