5 out of 5 stars Best of the 3 from John.......2006-03-10

This album is one of my favorite of all and definantly the best of the 3 John has put out. If you like Kansas you will love this beautiful album. Great words, music and scorching vocals will make you want his other two albums. We need a new one John.

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-08-09

John Elefante is simply awesome in 'Windows of Heaven'. The most memorable songs on the track are 'That's Why God Made The Moon' and 'No One's Ever Died for Me Before'. John sings the song in a very simple-toned yet very expressive and heartfelt way. The only regret I have is that the rest of the CD fails to convey as much energy as the songs mentioned above. Any fan of John Elefante, producer of albums for such groups as Petra, Greg Long, or Nikki Leonti will certainly appreciate this album.

4 out of 5 stars Jefferson Starship - Reunion Effort Similar To Mid-70's Material.......2007-06-05

The saga continues. By 1998 Paul Kantner had long left Jefferson Starship behind. Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick had carried on under the moniker of just Starship. Kantner had gone on to form the KBC band with Marty Balin and Jack Cassidy former Jefferson Starship / Airplane members. At some point Mickey Thomas obtained sole right of the use of the Starship band name, but Kantner still apparently had the rights to use Jefferson Starship. So, to make sure everyone was confused the Mickey Thomas version of Starship was still out touring in 1999 Kantner put this version of Jefferson Starship together for this reunion album. The band features the 3 main members of the KBC band (and original Jefferson Airplane) along with newcomer Diana Mangano on vocals, Slick Agular on guitar, T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs) on keys, and Prarie Prince (The Tubes) on drums. It was a formidable lineup and for the most part they put out an artistically successful album. This album reminds me a lot more of The Starship's early to mid-70's output (i.e. "Red Octopus", "Spitfire", "Dragonfly", "Earth") than it does the later 70's early 80's Mickey Thomas led band. Paul Kantner is fully in charge here writing the majority of the songs with a couple of Marty Balin ballads thrown in as well. I have always been a fan of Kantner's writing but I can understand people who would not like it. He is in prime form here with his patented mix of sci-fi, space / prog, and social / political commentary. Many of the songs feature multiple vocal leads which has been an Airplane / Starship trademark for years. The quality of Balin's songs will probably depend on how much like his writing style. Personally I don't really care for much of what he does and the songs on this album don't do much to change my opinion. Vocalist Diana Mangano has a great voice, but unfortunately is not given enough to do in my opinion. I think that bringing her to the lead more would have been a beneficial move. The bottom line is that if you like the mid-70's version of Jefferson Starship and / or Paul Kantner's solo works you will probably enjoy this reunion effort from the band.

5 out of 5 stars Successful Voyage of Starship /Kantner.......2006-09-15

If your a fan of the Jefferson Airplane, Paul Kantner, or Marty Balin then this should be a must for your collection. Likewise if your a fan of 60's type message music. Kantner continues to say the heck with commercialism and gives us a lot of interesting messages in politics, the environment, and the complexities of the modern world. Marty has a great song here in "Goddess." The music is great, the message is great, and the album is solid all the way thru. You get hard rock, some experimentation, and some nice ballads. If the radio stations had played it I think interest in the band would have been regenerated.
Jack Cassidy has since left the group and their recent live albums are not nearly as good in quality. This is the last studio album of new material from these rock masters. I would agree with another reviewer that Diana Mangano should be given more of the singing role. Prarie Prince is with the New Cars now so I wonder if Starsip can ever get clearance to fly again. It's a shame this album was overlooked and I suggest you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Millennium Album From Jefferson Starship.......2002-11-17

WINDOWS OF HEAVEN is Jefferson Starship's album to herald the millennium, and it's a great one. There are a couple of Marty Balin ballads- "Ways Of Love" and "Later On"- but they pale next to the other songs, which have roots in science fiction, politics, and the human condition. Much of the album seems to have a message about how we have neglected the environment, other people, and ourselves, and how all of that needs to change. If the songs seem a bit preachy and heavy-handed, at least it should shatter the complacency of the listener and inspire him/her to do something about the conditions affecting them. This is a great return for JS after numerous albums of commercial pap.

2 out of 5 stars OK, but put Diana up front and I'll give it 5 stars.......2001-10-28

The truly awesome vocalist that is Diana Mangano, if given the chance, could really elevate the band to heights never before witnessed here on Earth. Please nuture this wonderful vessel of beauty, charm and talent the next effort out, or respectfully give her the freedom to express her creativity...and guys, please stop singing - you should back HER up, not the other way around!

4 out of 5 stars Jefferson Starship Flies Once Again.......2001-04-27

This 1999 comeback album from Jefferson Starship took me by surprise. I had heard about its release back in '99 and was fairly skeptical about it. I finally picked up late last year and was very pleasantly surprised after listening to it.

This is very much a new band..not a return to the 1970's and most certainly not the band of the 1980's. Paul Kantner has once again reinvented the Starship into a fresh and energetic band for these new modern times. Joining him is longtime musical comrade Marty Balin, singer Diana Mangano, guitarist Mark "Slick" Aguilar, drummer Prairie Prince, keyboardist T. Lavitz and bassist Jack Casady...yes that Jack Casady. Grace Slick even makes a guest appearence on one song.

The songs themselves are full of energy, in which seven of them are written by Kantner and three by Balin. If I had one word to describe this album...electric. There's a wonderful rush of energy to these songs, and a great sense of freedom to the lyrics. Standout songs include The Light, Borderland, Let Me Fly, Shadowlands and See The Light. Kantner doesn't pull any punches in his songwriting and Balin still sounds terrific. Diana Mangano is a real find. She may not be Grace, but is still a wonderful and expressive singer. Mark Aguilar is a splendid lead guitarist and Prairie Prince (longtime drummer for The Tubes) adds a great kick to this new Starship. Jack Casady is Jack Casady..nuff said.

This was an album that was sorely overlooked upon its release, but if you've seen it and hedged upon getting it...think again..you'll be in for something new here. They also still sound great in concert..just having seen them live for the first time earlier this year. Kudos to Paul Kantner for relaunching the Starship once again. Keep on flying!

This music, which I first heard on our classical FM station, requires undivided listening. The Air conditioner interferes, overpowering the quiet sections [which is how it begins] but it is music I want to hear again and again until my brain gets formatted into the present century. Schumann etc. doesn't prepare me for this.

4 out of 5 stars Had to edit my review.......2001-09-10

I reviewed it before and gave it 3 stars, but as I listened to it a few more times, I came to the conclusion that this is a truly great cd. Kelly Keeling is among the best singers of all times, and Stuart Smith ( although very influenced by Blackmore ) is easily the best guitar player that emerged in 20 years. About my last review, some songs are really crossing over into pop, but it's a pop very well done. And the hard rock songs are really catchy and well composed. I still think you should listen to Guitar Zeus before, tho. The songs are even better and it's a truly 5 star album. Ah, listen to it several times before you make a judgement, it's an album that grows on you. Maybe later I come back and re-review it and give it a 5.

5 out of 5 stars "Windows To The World".......2001-01-30

    Hi!

I've been looking forward to writing my review of the bands new CD "Windows To The World", and I only hope that I'll do it justice as it hasn't left my CD player ever since it arrived!

Track 1: "Dogs Of War"Begins with a short piece of soft pipe music which slowly unravels into good old foot stomping classic rock!! Loved the keyboard and guitar skills and especially lthe way this track changes tempo several times throughout. Definitely a great track to open the CD with.

Track 2: "World's Apart" A terrific song ... definitely one of my favourites! Kelly's vocals really shine throughout this track, and as mentioned in previous reviews, this is definitely "chart quality" material. I caught myself singing along to this in the bath the other evening, and the lyrics (co-written along with Jaime Kyle) are the perfect accompaniment along with this splendid melodic track. Loved it.

Track 3: "If Only Love" Much like the previous track except with a slower feel, but again has a very modern touch with great lyrics. Loved the acoustic guitar at the beginning.

Track 4: "Jade" A rock track with some keyboard from Arlen. Wasn't too sure of this track on the first listen, but after having listened to it through the hi-fi with the volume cranked up high, it's changed my first opinion and made it another of my favourites.

Track 5: "Broken Arrow! Mmmm .... A very dark and mysterious blues track!! Loved it the moment I first listened to it. Very spiritual and superbly sung by Kelly.

    Track 6: "Prisoner"

An upbeat rock tune, co-written by Ritchie Blackmore, Stuart and Kelly.

    Track 7: "Away From Harm

Another favourite of mine at the moment!

    Track 8: "Through Your Eyes"

Begins with a mellow acoustic guitar and leads into a catchy rock/blues chorus.

Track 9: "Windows To The World"

A track written and sung all about the internet, this song begins with the sound of a modem logging onto the internet ... then launches into good foot tapping rock.

Track 10: "Politician" Another rocking track with a good strong chorus.

Track 11: "Years Gone By" A beautiful instrumental reminiscent of the "Titanic" soundtrack, another favourite CD in my collection. Listen to "Years Gone By" and just let the music take you away ... very atmospheric. Love how the electric guitar is gradually "introduced" a third way into the track. Very beautifully produced too ... you'll love it!

Track 12: "Gone By Morning" An Irish folk song ... sounds like a good old fashioned pub sing-a-long until you hear the lyrics! As it's the very last track on the album, I wonder if it's the bands idea of a "topping out ceremony" after completing the album?! A great song to end the album with!

My over all impression is one of a superb CD and a distinct move forward. Because of all the "Guest" musician/singers on the previous CD, it was a test for the band to see how they would stand alone on this one, and they haven't disappointed! The band have worked extremely hard on this CD and it very clearly shows through. A must have CD for any classic rock fan!

    Take care! Wendy
