The Nixons are one of the few bands hailing from Norman/Oklahoma City, but the foursome has nothing in common with the twisted psychedelia of the Flaming Lips or the transvestite punk of the Chainsaw Kittens. Its debut, Foma, is soulless, generic grunge. The album takes its title from author Kurt Vonnegut's phrase for meaningless lies that people live with to make themselves feel better-appropriate for a band that, given a different commercial environment, would probably sound like Poison. --Jim DeRogatis

Nauseating.........2006-05-05
I love the acoustic version of Sister that was popular for a few years; one of the most beautiful songs I've heard.. so, I decided to go ahead and check out the album. The first disappointment was that the album version of Sister is NOT the acoustic version. So, I checked out the rest of the tracks.. and for the life of me, I cannot figure out how the band that crooned out Sister could also produce the trite, depressing, sub-grunge rock that the rest of the album is. It's not worth even the lowest price that the used CD's are going for on this site.
Underated!!!!!.......2004-12-08
How in the world could anyone listen to this album and give it a bad review??? "Foma" is one of the most unheralded great pieces of music that I have ever heard. These guys can rock with the best, and yet can touch the emotions in a way only the greatest can. From "Sister", to "Passion", and "Foma", to "JLM" & "Fellowship", this album is incredible from beginning to end. I remember when this album first came out and "Sister" was getting quite a bit of airplay. Haven't heard much from them since on the airwaves but no matter how they sound now, they definately hit a high few bands will ever touch with "Foma". BUY THIS ALBUM!!!!!
generally OK.......2003-12-17
I bought this CD for one song that i remembered from the ninties, Sister. A great mid-nineties song that got some decent play back in the day.
The remainder of the CD has some pretty good tracks and some pretty average tracks. If you like the middle ninties post-grunge sound you'll like the majority of the CD.

despite the terribly loud noise that came from this album, i fell asleep in the middle of it. i bought it with no money from the bargain bin of a record exchange. after i'd listened to it, i could picture the cashier laughing at me and saying "haha, you're stuck with this cd now..." i left it on the bus seat on the way to school for some unlucky person to stumble upon. sort of like jumanji, only it sucks.
sister is slightly worth listening to for about 5 seconds. other than that, forget this album.
I like it.......2003-07-29
There really are so many better records that one could buy for better songwriting, but I generally enjoy albums that are consistent, atmospheric and are therefore more than the sum of their parts. Most "best of" albums consist of good songs, but lack atmosphere and so are usually no more than the sum of their parts. Using this logic, Foma is one of my favourites - listenable songs, nothing too annoying, but an atmosphere and consistency that pulls it all together in a very satisfying manner (other favourites of mine using this reasoning include Live's Secret Samadi and Natalie Merchant's Ophelia). The boys here do put a good melody over a very chunky riff, which, if you're in the mood to let out a bit of steam, makes this a very fun album. A dredging of the mid-90s mass of guitar-toting wannabes wouldn't be a success if this fine album didn't get caught in the net.

Product Description
"a disturbing, apocalyptic chronicle of one man's escape from earth to a moon orbiting Mars. Complete with thoughtful lyrics and simple, haunting string arrangements, it has enough heavy vibrations to scare the hell out of you, as well as just enough clever pop to keep you on the ground. It is, in all honesty, the ideal soundtrack for a Kurt Vonnegut novel." -Weekly Alibi

Sister, I miss you. Hits home, lemme tell ya........2004-04-30
This album, is basically the same as the original, except for the acoustic version of Sister, which should be heard again and again by anyone who has, or has had, a sister. I've written to the group and explained my story and how close to what I've lived it is - I don't think they got it though. I definitely suggest you get this one, or at least get one of the albums with the acoustic version of Sister on it. That song is the only thing that brings Julie back, even if it's only for a moment in my heart...
Foma With Acoustic Version of Sister.......2000-06-15
It is nothing that special only it was the first release with the acoustic version of sister and it rocks. Still a good buy and a great album... have fun
